Release objects and complete teardown for dependency-skipped tests - #7605
Dependency-skipped tests previously returned from the runner before object untracking, class/assembly completion accounting and context cleanup. Route them through the coordinator's existing early-skip path so cleanup and status reporting happen once without constructing the test instance or running per-test setup/body. Remove the runner dependencies made redundant by that routing.
Add regressions for disposable data rows, once-only OnDispose, class teardown and last-test receivers, including a dependency skip that is the final test in the assembly/session. The integration tests cover reflection and AOT modes in CI.
Ran both targeted regression filters directly in source-generated and reflection modes. The observer and completion checks passed; each run deliberately contains one failed prerequisite and one skipped dependent.
Restoring main's runner reproduces the regression: the tracked row object's dispose count stays zero and the observer/session cleanup checks fail.
Engine integration tests and AOT execution are left to CI per repository instructions. No reflection or metadata-generation paths changed.
Review follow-up:
Dependency-skipped tests acquire the same global exclusion lock and parallel limiter as other tests before cleanup. Existing skip reasons are preserved.
Dependency skips now publish InProgress before Skipped and invoke skipped/end receivers, consistently with other coordinator skips.
Both integration regressions require a file marker written only after all assembly/session completion assertions succeed.
Validation: 10 TestRunnerTests passed; net10.0 TestProject and Engine.Tests builds passed. Both targeted filters completed their cleanup markers in source-generated and reflection modes (each has the intentional failed prerequisite and skipped dependent). Engine integration execution and AOT remain for CI.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Release objects and complete teardown for dependency-skipped tests" matches the main change. The objectives say dependency-skipped tests now route through the coordinator's early-skip path so that object release, context cleanup, and completion accounting run once. The raw summary confirms the TestRunner and TUnitServiceProvider changes that support this routing, and the added Issue7338 regression tests cover cleanup and completion for skipped dependents. The title is specific and concise, and it does not include file lists or vague wording.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The changes satisfy issue [#7338]. TestRunner now preserves or assigns the dependency skip reason and sends the test through TestCoordinator after lock acquisition. This avoids test construction, per-test setup, and test body execution while using coordinator cleanup. The regression tests verify one tracked-resource disposal, one OnDispose notification, class teardown, assembly/session completion, last-test receivers, and the skipped result. Issue7338Tests runs the regressions for both configured metadata modes and covers a final dependency skip. Unit tests also verify lock waiting and skip-reason preservation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue [#7338]. Constructor cleanup, coordinator routing, focused unit tests, integration regressions, and the [#7205] comment correction directly support dependency-skip cleanup and accounting. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated test area was added.

A rabbit checks the skipped test’s trail, The coordinator follows without fail. A tracked row rests, its resources free, Class hooks count what they should see. The session writes its closing note, And hops away with a cleanup quote.
Routing dependency-skipped tests through TestCoordinator.ExecuteTestAsync is a good fix. It gives the skip case one cleanup path (untracking, data-row scopes, OnDispose, after-class/assembly hooks, last-test receivers, activity finish) instead of a second hand-rolled copy in the runner. It also lets you drop the ITUnitMessageBus and TestStateManager dependencies from TestRunner. Setting SkipReason before the call makes the coordinator hit its early-skip branch before any instance construction or Before hooks, so the no-setup guarantee holds.
I traced this against the coordinator and found no blocking problems. Two minor points:
Overwriting SkipReason.test.Context.SkipReason = "Skipped due to failed dependencies" replaces any reason already set, for example by [Skip] or a derived skip attribute. Such a test would now report the dependency reason instead of its own. Keep the existing reason if one is set (test.Context.SkipReason ??= ..., or an IsNullOrEmpty check). Alternatively, confirm the old behaviour already overwrote it.
Ordering of messages. The coordinator now publishes InProgress before Skipped for these tests, and it fires OnTestSkipped and test-end receivers. Previously only Skipped was published. This is arguably more correct and consistent with other skips, but it is a visible behaviour change for reporters and receivers. It is worth a line in the PR description.
The regression tests are thorough. They cover disposable data rows, once-only OnDispose, class teardown, and last-in-class/assembly/session receivers, including the dependency skip as the final test. The FakeTestCoordinator update to honour SkipReason keeps the unit tests faithful. The engine integration tests need CI, which is expected per the repo instructions.
Overall this looks good, with just the SkipReason overwrite to consider.
Fixed execution-lock bypass and strengthened completion regression assertions in 7d55911. Existing SkipReason is now preserved; the PR body documents InProgress and skipped/end receiver notifications.
The change is sound. Instead of keeping a parallel skip implementation in TestRunner, it sets SkipReason and lets TestCoordinator's existing early-skip path do the work. That path already does MarkSkipped, the skipped and end receivers, and the finally cleanup (untracking, class/assembly/session accounting, OnDispose). Fixing the leak by reusing that path is better than patching the runner's own copy. It also removes the MessageBus and TestStateManager dependencies from TestRunner.
I read the diff and the coordinator code. I did not build or run the tests.
Minor points
test.Context.SkipReason ??= ... only assigns when SkipReason is null. The coordinator checks string.IsNullOrEmpty. If a skip attribute ever left an empty string, the dependency skip would not apply and the test would run. Prefer if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(test.Context.SkipReason)) test.Context.SkipReason = ....
The skipped test now takes the global NotInParallel lock and the parallel limiter before it is skipped. The PR description says this is intentional, and DependencySkip_WaitsForExecutionLock covers it. A skipped test can now wait behind a long [NotInParallel] test. If that matters, the coordinator's skip could be entered earlier, but the current approach is simpler and consistent.
test.State = Running and StartTime are set before the skip. The coordinator then marks the test Skipped, so the final state is correct, but HasStartedExecution is now true for a test that never started. Check that nothing, such as the fail-fast or cancellation handling in the catch block, uses that flag in a way that matters here.
The Issue7338 regression test passes its completion marker through a temp-file path in an environment variable. That works, but it is somewhat fragile. It is acceptable given that the checks run in the test session's After hook.
Addressed Claude's empty-string skip-reason note in a216daa: dependency failure now supplies a reason when the existing value is null or empty, matching the coordinator's early-skip condition. A parameterized regression covers null, empty, and existing nonempty reasons. All 13 TestRunnerTests passed on SDK 10.0.403; no Engine.Tests execution was run locally.
Disposition of the remaining minor notes: keep execution-lock acquisition because skipped/end receivers and teardown need the test's exclusion guarantees. HasStartedExecution intentionally records entry to the coordinator: the runner and scheduler use it to avoid repeating cleanup for tests the coordinator owns; the skipped result does not trigger fail-fast. Keep the unique child-process completion marker because it verifies session hook assertions despite the deliberately failing prerequisite.
The PR remains draft pending fresh Claude and Codex verdicts on this head.
Review: route dependency-skipped tests through the coordinator early-skip path
This looks correct. It fixes #7338: a dependency-skipped test now goes through TestCoordinator's existing skip handling. That handling covers MarkSkipped, skipped receivers, untracking, class/assembly/session completion accounting and OnDispose. The old bespoke path in TestRunner skipped most of that. I read the diff and the coordinator code but did not run the tests.
What I checked
break instead of return still stops the loop at the first failed dependency, so behaviour matches the old path. The test then takes the global lock and parallel limiter like every other test, and your DependencySkip_WaitsForExecutionLock test covers that.
TestCoordinator handles a non-empty SkipReason at several points (lines 77, 125, 156 and 396). Writing the reason before calling it therefore hits an existing branch, and no new engine path is added.
Removing MessageBus and TestStateManager from the TestRunner constructor is a clean simplification. All call sites are updated, including TUnitServiceProvider and the unit tests.
The regressions are good. They assert that the dispose count is exactly 1, and the completion marker file makes the last-test-in-assembly/session case verifiable instead of silently passing.
Minor points, none blocking
test.Context.SkipReason is now mutated as a side effect of the scheduler's dependency check. Setting the reason is also the signal the coordinator reacts to, so the coupling is implicit. A short comment saying that the coordinator keys off SkipReason would help the next reader. A more explicit design would be a dedicated ITestCoordinator.SkipAsync(test, reason) entry point. That is probably more than this fix needs.
The mutation is permanent. If a test context could be re-run (retry or repeat), the stale skip reason would carry over. The failed dependency's state would probably skip it again anyway, but it is worth a quick check.
FakeTestCoordinator now mirrors the real coordinator's skip handling. That is fine, but it makes the unit test depend on the fake staying faithful. The integration tests are the real guard, so CI on those matters.
Overall this is a good, focused fix with solid tests. Approving from a code standpoint, pending green CI on the engine integration tests (reflection and AOT).
Current head a216daa has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, and all inline findings are resolved.
Disposition of Claude's remaining nonblocking notes: the existing runner comment already describes the coordinator early-skip contract; keep this focused fix rather than introduce a separate coordinator API. The coordinator checks SkipReason and returns before RetryHelper.ExecuteWithRetry, so a dependency skip never enters retries. Repeats are built as distinct test combinations with their own RepeatIndex. The integration regressions remain the guard for the fake coordinator and will run in reflection/AOT CI after promotion.
Marking ready for review to start CI and the ready-for-review Claude run. Auto-merge must wait for that new Claude run to pass and its findings to be read. No code changes or local test runs in this unit.
Review: route dependency-skipped tests through the coordinator early-skip path (#7338)
The approach is sound, and I found no blocking issues. Static review only: I read the diff and TestCoordinator, and I did not build or run the tests.
What I checked
TestRunner now sets SkipReason and breaks instead of returning early. The test then goes through the global NotInParallel lock and the parallel limiter. It reaches TestCoordinator.ExecuteTestAsync, which already handles a non-empty SkipReason before instance creation. That means MarkSkipped, the skipped and end receivers, and the normal finally cleanup run: untracking, class/assembly/session completion accounting, and context disposal. Dependency skips used to bypass all of that.
Dropping ITUnitMessageBus and TestStateManager from the TestRunner constructor is a safe simplification. The only caller I checked is TUnitServiceProvider, plus the test helpers.
Preserving a non-empty existing SkipReason is sensible and has a unit test.
Coverage is good. It includes a skipped test that is the final test in the assembly and session, once-only OnDispose, and the lock-ordering test. The completion-marker file stops the test from passing silently when the After(TestSession) assertions never run.
Minor, non-blocking
The skipped test is now briefly marked Running with a StartTime and HasStartedExecution = true before it is marked skipped. The PR description says InProgress is now published before Skipped, matching the other coordinator skips. That seems fine. Check that TRX and IDE output don't show a bogus duration for these tests.
A skipped dependent now waits on its parallel limiter or global NotInParallel lock like any other test. This is deliberate and tested, but it costs throughput when many tests are skipped behind a failed prerequisite. If that turns out to matter, a cheaper option is to run the cleanup-only path outside the locks.
The test helper FakeTestCoordinator now mimics skip behaviour (SkipReason leads to Skipped). That is fine, but it duplicates coordinator logic in the fake. A short comment saying so would help.
Looks good to merge once CI, including the engine integration tests in reflection and AOT modes, is green.

Run 41926622687 completed successfully; its Claude review has no blocking findings. The former wait is cleared, but subsequent CI exposed the regression hook running during unrelated filtered sessions: discovery constructs TrackedResource even when its test is excluded, so Instance is not an execution guard.
Fixed in f7dca72. Session assertions now opt in through the existing completion-path environment variable supplied by both dedicated integration child runs. Those runs still require every assertion and the completion marker, and now explicitly assert the resource exists.
Validation on SDK 10.0.403: Release net10.0 TestProject build passed; unrelated FilterByDynamicAddedPropertyTests passed in source-generated and reflection modes without the marker variable. Both dedicated cleanup filters produced completed markers in both modes (one intentional failed prerequisite and one skipped dependent in each). No Engine.Tests execution locally; full engine and AOT validation remain for CI. git diff --check passed.
All existing review threads are resolved; current-head CI and fresh automated reviews must complete before merge. No dependency or owner decision prevents this fix.
Routing dependency-skipped tests through the coordinator's existing early-skip path is a good fix. It reuses the cleanup that other skipped tests already get (object untracking, class/assembly/session accounting, OnDispose, context disposal). It also lets TestRunner drop its MessageBus and TestStateManager dependencies, so the runner is simpler.
What I checked:
TestCoordinator handles a non-empty Context.SkipReason up front (around lines 77 and 396). Setting the reason and breaking out of the dependency loop therefore reaches the shared skip path.
Skipping still takes the global NotInParallel lock and the parallel limiter before the coordinator runs. This matches other tests, and DependencySkip_WaitsForExecutionLock covers it.
An existing skip reason is preserved, and the default reason is only set when the existing one is null or empty. The theory test covers null, empty and non-empty.
The regression tests cover the last test in the class, assembly and session. The completion marker file means the session-level assertions can't pass silently.
Minor, non-blocking points:
test.Context.SkipReason is mutated as the signal to the coordinator. This works, but it makes a dependency skip look the same as a user-declared skip to any later reader of the context (reports, receivers). If you ever need to tell them apart, a dedicated skip-cause field would be cleaner. Nothing needs it today.
Issue7338Tests only checks pass/fail/skip counts plus the marker file. That is fine because the in-process assertions do the real work.
The earlier wait on run 41926622687 is cleared: it completed successfully. Current head f7dca72 has a completed positive Codex summary, a successful Claude review with no blocking findings, and green CI including Ubuntu/Windows engine tests and AOT. All three inline threads are resolved with commit-linked fixes and no later reviewer replies.
Final review dispositions: keep SkipReason as the existing coordinator signal; its contract is explained at the assignment and existing nonempty reasons are preserved. Keep the integration counters plus completion marker: the in-process assertions check disposal and lifecycle behavior, and the marker proves those assertions ran successfully. Earlier lock, retry/repeat and message-ordering notes were already dispositioned and covered by the regressions and PR description. CodeRabbit's generic docstring-coverage warning is nonblocking: these changes cover internal runner wiring and self-describing regression helpers, and the runner's cleanup contract already has a focused explanatory comment. There is no repository requirement for the suggested coverage threshold.
No outstanding dependency, superseding PR, owner decision or external gate remains. Proceeding through the repository merge wrapper; no code changes or additional local engine tests are needed.
