Typed tuple rows such as IEnumerable<(int, int)> bind whole to the first matching tuple parameter when remaining optional or params parameters are omitted. Generated factories and reflection row normalization preserve the same shape, including TestDataRow<T> wrappers. Nested tuple rows still spread to supply an explicit trailing value. Nested mutable tuple elements retain their boxes through setup, ordinary lists keep their tuple conversion operators, and closed generic tuple parameters retain concrete metadata before optional tails.

Tuples with mutable struct elements retain the same element boxes through property injection, initialization and event callbacks, then reconstruct at invocation. Adds coverage for wrapped and mutable value/reference tuples, optional parameters, params arrays and collections, cancellation-token positions, and synchronous, Task, ValueTask, async-enumerable and instance sources. Fixes the analyzer test interpolation so its params cases are actually tested, documents the filtered-token invariant, and clarifies the tuple preservation flag.

Retained nested tuples preserve their logical runtime types during generic inference and reconstruct before object/interface casts. Cached constructors for both tuple families are explicitly preserved for trimming and Native AOT, including private erased element types and Rest tuples. Source-generated unresolved generic entries keep their open metadata rather than emitting an out-of-scope type parameter.

Additional validation: reflection-only erased nested generic inference passed; all 58 conversion-matrix outcomes matched expected successes and binding rejections in generated, reflection and Native AOT modes. Updated the two matrix expectations for newly supported recursive conversions. Erased conversion-operator fixtures explicitly register their AOT converter; typed conversion with optional test parameters has a separate analyzer limitation tracked in #7617.

Reflection invocation also restores retained tuple arguments before ordinary and params assignability checks, preventing internal wrappers from reaching object parameters. Four added regression outcomes cover ordinary parameters, parameters before params, and single/multiple params elements. Latest validation: all 48 targeted outcomes pass in generated, reflection and macOS arm64 Native AOT modes; the existing 60 tuple lifecycle cases pass again in reflection mode. Native AOT publish has no trim/AOT warnings. Additional initialization and local MSBuild worker-exit evidence is recorded in existing #7484 and #7468.

Closes #7340

Validation (SDK 10.0.403):

  • 126 MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests passed on net10.0.
  • All 44 targeted _7212 regressions passed in generated mode and again with --reflection.
  • All 60 existing _7402 tuple lifecycle regressions passed in each mode.
  • Core generator snapshot suite: 341 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed and added the tuple/optional snapshot.
  • 10 ArgumentFormatterTests passed; the internal tuple container preserves tuple display formatting.
  • Focused Native AOT application published for macOS arm64 and passed all 44 targeted regression tests, including private tuple types, nine-element tuples, object/interface targets, wrapped optional/params rows and closed generic tuple metadata.
  • Final test application and netstandard2.0 core builds passed with zero warnings.
  • Engine integration tests remain for CI, per repository guidance. No public API changes.

Separate existing issue found during validation: generated property setters copy boxed structs (#7609). The property-injection regression uses the same reflection-setter setup as the existing mutable tuple tests; generated struct setters remain tracked independently.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Tuple data rows now bind as a single value when the test’s first parameter matches the tuple and remaining parameters are optional or params. Optional defaults and additional values are handled as expected.
    • Tuple binding supports a wider range of data sources, including nested, generic, and mutable tuples.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified how tuple rows bind to test parameters.

Walkthrough

Tuple rows now bind as a whole to a matching first tuple parameter when later parameters are optional or params. The analyzer, data-source handling, generated invocation, and reflection binding apply this rule. Tests cover typed, wrapped, mutable, nested, converted, and generic tuple rows.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Objective [#7340]: a typed tuple row must bind whole to a leading tuple parameter when all later non-CancellationToken parameters are optional or params. TUnit0001 must accept such rows in both generated and reflection modes.

Analyzer: src/TUnit.Analyzers/TestDataAnalyzer.cs adds CanBindWholeTupleWithOmissions. It returns true only when the row type equals parameterTypes[0], the row is a tuple, and every later non-token parameter is optional or params. CheckMethodDataSource and UnwrapTypes both call it. A nested row with a different type still spreads. The analyzer test that recorded the old flagged behavior now uses a required trailing parameter, which matches the rule.

Reflection: src/TUnit.Engine/Helpers/DataUnwrapper.cs renames the helper to GetTupleDataParameterType. It keeps scanning after the tuple parameter and returns null only when a later data parameter is required and not params. The unwrap path returns the whole row for a matching first tuple parameter. It wraps the row in TupleArgument when flattened binding is required.

Generated mode: The TestMetadataGenerator change summary states that the generated invoker rebuilds a single tuple row when the first parameter is a tuple and all remaining parameters are optional or params. I did not inspect the generator source directly. The regression project tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7212 covers typed, wrapped, Task, ValueTask, async, and instance sources, optional and params parameters, and cancellation-token positions. The PR reports these tests as passing in generated mode. The reported engine integration run remains for CI, so that run is not established here.

No required objective of #7340 is unmet in the reviewed code. #7617 (typed conversion with optional test parameters) and #7609 (generated struct property setters) are separate issues and are not #7340 requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The analyzer and DataUnwrapper diffs implement the whole-tuple binding rule for #7340. The other changes keep a matching tuple row intact through the path that consumes it. These paths are: generated tuple reconstruction and metadata (TestMetadataGenerator, generated snapshots); DataSourceFactories and DataSourceHelpers tuple preservation; TupleArgument wrapping; CastHelper and TupleArgumentHelper materialization; ObjectGraphDiscoverer root handling; TestGenericTypeResolver inference; ReflectionTestDataCollector invocation; and ArgumentFormatter display. Tests and snapshots cover these paths. The docs change describes the same binding rule.

The PR is broad. It also covers mutable tuple element boxes, property injection, callbacks, Native AOT and trimming constructor preservation, and closed generic tuple metadata. These changes support the same retained-row behavior, and the PR description links them to the typed-row work. I found no demonstrated unrelated change. The PR does not implement #7609 (generated struct setters) or #7617 (conversion with optional parameters). The PR description says those issues are tracked separately.

The whole-PR diff was read only for the analyzer and DataUnwrapper files. Other files are assessed from the PR summary and the regression tests. No unresolved contradiction was found in that evidence.

Review: typed tuple rows before optional parameters

The change is coherent and I found no blocking issues. The analyzer, the source-generated factory path (DataSourceFactories.ToRow) and the reflection path (DataSourceHelpers) all use the same rule. A row binds whole only when its runtime type matches the first tuple parameter, so ((25, 26), 7) still spreads. The coverage looks good: it includes a negative analyzer test for a required trailing parameter, plus sync, Task, ValueTask, async-enumerable and instance sources. I only read the diff. I did not build the PR or run any tests.

Suggestions, none blocking:

  1. Analyzer cancellation-token handling. CanBindWholeTupleWithOmissions filters CancellationToken out of method.Parameters and then calls Skip(1). That assumes the first non-token parameter is the tuple, which is also parameterTypes[0]. This holds only if testParameterTypes already excludes tokens. Token_Tuple_And_Optional covers a leading token, so it probably works, but a short comment or an index-based check against the same filtered list would make the invariant explicit.
  2. Repeated lookup. GetTypeByMetadataName("System.Threading.CancellationToken") runs on each analyzed data source. It's cheap, but you could compare parameter.Type.ToDisplayString() or cache the symbol per compilation.
  3. Naming. TupleRowBinding changed from an enum to a record struct with Preserve, MatchingType and IsProperty. The IsProperty flag is really 'skip the flattened-initializer check'. A name like AllowFlattenedBinding would say what it does and avoid tying the type to the property case.
  4. Engine tests. The Engine tests were not run locally, which matches the repo guidance. CI should confirm the 18-test count in both modes.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the previously reported test-count failure is fixed.

Summary

Typed tuple rows can bind whole before optional or params parameters. Mutable tuple elements keep their updated values through setup and are rebuilt before the test runs.

  • Matching tuple rows stay whole before optional or params parameters.
  • Mutable tuple elements survive setup before the test runs.
  • Nested tuple values convert recursively in generated test calls.

Fixed the blocking review findings in 5a0ffd0: wrapped matching tuple payloads now survive omitted optional/params arguments; mutable tuple elements retain their boxes across property injection, initialization and event callbacks and reconstruct only when invoked. The analyzer test now interpolates its tail, covering all three signatures.

Claude's nonblocking suggestions are dispositioned as follows:

  1. Added the comment stating that both parameter lists exclude engine-injected cancellation tokens.
  2. Kept symbol-identity comparison and the existing metadata lookup. Replacing it with ToDisplayString() would allocate and discard symbol identity; a compilation-wide cache is a separate performance change that should be measured before adding it.
  3. Renamed IsProperty to AllowMutableElements, describing the preservation behavior.
  4. Updated the engine integration expectation to 33. All 33 regressions passed locally in each execution mode; the prohibited local Engine.Tests suite remains for CI.

Validation also passed: 126 analyzer tests, 340 generator snapshot tests (1 existing skip), 10 formatter tests, 60 existing tuple lifecycle tests in each mode, netstandard2.0 core build, and a focused Native AOT publish with 5 passing native tests. The PR body has the full validation record. A separate generated struct property setter issue discovered during validation is tracked in #7609.

Review of #7608 (tuple rows with optional/params parameters)

I reviewed the diff and read the new TupleArgument and TupleArguments helpers. I did not run any tests. I found no blocking issues. The approach is sound and the test coverage is broad.

What works well

  • TupleArgument keeps the tuple boundary and the mutable element boxes until invocation. That fixes the copy-on-read problem with boxed ValueTuple.
  • The same shape is used in the generated path and the reflection path, which the dual-mode rule in AGENTS.md requires. Tests run in both modes, plus a Native AOT publish.
  • TupleArguments.Expand allocates nothing for ordinary rows, so the hot path is protected.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Dedup by reference in Expand. visited.Add drops any argument whose reference was already seen. If a row holds the same reference-type instance twice, for example (sharedObj, sharedObj), the second occurrence is now invisible to the services that use the expanded list. For hooks and property injection that is probably the right behaviour, because it avoids double initialisation. The code should say so in a comment, and a test should cover it. If it is not intended, a path-based cycle check would be safer than a global visited set.
  2. Silent depth limit. The depth cap of 50 returns without a trace. A cycle is already handled by visited, so the cap only matters for pathological nesting. A short comment on why 50 would help.
  3. Two parallel implementations. The NET branch uses ITuple and the netstandard branch uses UnwrapTupleAot. Moving the tuple-element enumeration into one helper in Core would keep the two behaviours from drifting apart.
  4. TupleArgument as a public-facing shape. It implements IReadOnlyList<object?>. Anything that type-checks against IEnumerable or IReadOnlyList will treat it as an ordinary collection. Please confirm that the params collection binding and ArgumentFormatter can never mistake it for a user-supplied collection. The new ArgumentFormatterTests suggest this is covered.

Engine integration tests are left to CI, as repo guidance says. Please confirm they are green before merging.

Disposition of the new Claude nonblocking suggestions on 5a0ffd0:

  1. Reference deduplication in TupleArguments.Expand is intentional: shared fixtures must be initialized and receive callbacks once. It predates this fix. Existing TupleLifecycleTests.Nested_Tuples_Track_Shared_Elements_Once and SharedTupleReceiverTests.Shared_Receiver_Runs_Once cover shared references; all 60 _7402 tests pass in both modes.
  2. The existing depth cap is a defensive bound on pathological nesting and matches the object-graph traversal policy. This fix leaves that policy unchanged; no failure or ambiguity was found that warrants changing it in this PR.
  3. The two target-framework branches predate this fix. The NET branch directly enumerates ITuple; the netstandard branch uses the existing compatibility fallback. The new retained-box container has one shared traversal path before those branches, so its behavior cannot drift between them. A broader traversal refactor is optional follow-up work.
  4. TupleArgument is internal and created only for a matching tuple parameter. Generated invokers reconstruct it before optional/params binding; reflection invocation reconstructs it against the target tuple type. ArgumentFormatter explicitly handles it as a tuple before checking IEnumerable. The optional/params regressions in both modes, formatter test, and focused native optional/params tests verify those boundaries.

Engine integration tests remain a merge gate for CI once the draft is promoted; no merge is attempted in this unit.

Review of #7608 (tuple rows with optional/params parameters)

I read the diff for the factory, helper, unwrapper and TupleArgument changes. I did not build the PR or run any tests. I found no blocking issues.

What works well

  • The binding rule is the same on the source-generated path (DataSourceFactories.ToRow) and the reflection path (DataSourceHelpers, DataUnwrapper). A row binds whole only when its runtime type matches the first tuple parameter, so ((25, 26), 7) still spreads. This meets the dual-mode requirement in AGENTS.md.
  • TupleArgument keeps the tuple boundary and the mutable element boxes until invocation. A boxed ValueTuple would otherwise hand out fresh struct copies on each read.
  • The tests cover wrapped rows, optional and params parameters, and the sync, Task, ValueTask, async-enumerable and instance sources. They run in both modes, and the PR also reports a Native AOT publish.

Non-blocking suggestions

  1. The "is this a tuple" check now appears in several places: DataSourceHelpers.IsTuple, TupleArguments.Expand and DataUnwrapper. Each one special-cases TupleArgument separately. Putting the TupleArgument handling in one helper, for example TupleHelper.TryGetElements, would stop a future call site from missing it.
  2. TupleRowBinding changed from an enum to a record struct with three flags. Preserve, MatchingType and AllowMutableElements can now be combined in states that nothing uses, such as Preserve: false with a MatchingType. A small enum plus a nullable type would make the valid states explicit.
  3. The latest Codex review of 8522ed0 is marked as having suggestions, but I could not read its inline comments in this run. Please confirm each one has a disposition and its thread is resolved before merge.

The approach is sound and I'm happy to see this merged once CI is green.

Run 41923988689 completed successfully and its Claude review has no blockers. The subsequent Windows Engine tests failed in ExpectedStateTests.Pass when the reflection child reached its deadline (run 41923988175). Rebased onto 9b2ef37, bringing in #7606 / cc051ef, which isolates that full passing session from sibling engine children, plus the later main fixes. Both PR patches are identical according to git range-diff; new head e9d32d7. No blind rerun was used.

Validation: all 126 MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests passed on net10.0. Existing build warnings are tracked in #7410. Engine.Tests remains for CI as required by repository guidance. Fresh CI and reviews must pass on the rebased head before merge.

Disposition of the ready-for-review Claude suggestions: (1) centralizing tuple checks is an optional refactor; each current boundary explicitly handles TupleArgument and is covered by the existing dual-mode tests. (2) TupleRowBinding is a private readonly record struct with controlled construction sites; no invalid state or behavior was identified, so changing its representation is optional. (3) All earlier Codex findings have commit-specific fix replies and resolved threads; Codex also completed a clean review of 5a0ffd0. CodeRabbit's docstring coverage warning is advisory and does not identify a correctness defect; the relevant binding behavior is documented. Fresh reviewers will assess the rebased head.

Review of #7608: tuple rows with optional/params parameters

I read the core helpers (DataSourceHelpers, TupleArgument, TupleArguments). I did not run the tests. The tests, docs and generator snapshot were skimmed rather than read closely, and I did not read the TestMetadataGenerator, ReflectionTestDataCollector, ObjectGraphDiscoverer, DataUnwrapper and analyzer changes in detail, so this review does not cover them. The PR description reports 126 analyzer tests, 33 targeted _7212 regressions in both modes, 60 _7402 lifecycle regressions and a macOS AOT publish, all passing. Engine tests are left to CI as the repo guidance says.

The behaviour is sensible and the coverage listed in the description is broad. I found nothing blocking. These are design concerns:

  1. TupleArgument is a sentinel that other code has to know about. It is internal, but it now travels through UnwrapTupleAot, IsTuple, the engine's TupleArguments.Expand, DataUnwrapper, ObjectGraphDiscoverer and ArgumentFormatter. Any consumer that misses a TupleArgument check will treat it as an opaque IReadOnlyList<object?>. In IsTuple it passes as a tuple even though it is not an ITuple. A reasonable follow-up is one TupleArgument.TryGetElements helper (or a documented invariant) so the knowledge lives in one place. A test that fails whenever a new consumer sees one unhandled would also help.

  2. Two flatten policies sit side by side. ShouldFlattenErasedTuple and RequiresFlattenedTupleBinding / HasMutableTupleElementShape encode related rules in different places. The rule is: flatten for reference tuples, otherwise only when a mutable struct element needs its box kept. Consider a single named decision with a doc comment table. ToObjectArrayWithTypes returns elements when expectedTypes.Length == 1 and a TupleArgument otherwise, and that asymmetry is only implicit.

  3. Performance on the discovery/execution path. RequiresFlattenedTupleBinding calls UnwrapTupleAot (an array copy) for every row whose tuple type has a mutable element shape. The per-type check is cached, but the per-row element scan is not. It only runs for mutable-shape types, so it is probably fine. If this is hot, scan with ITuple indexing as IsSingletonTupleContainingNull already does. In TupleArguments.Expand, the depth >= 50 limit is a magic number and the visited set adds allocations for every row that contains a tuple. A named constant, or a note on why 50, would help.

  4. Small points. The HasMutableTupleElementShape recursion is limited to i == 7 (the Rest slot); a short comment on why would help. The System.ValueTuple/System.Tuple checks use string prefix matching on FullName, which is fine but duplicates what TupleHelper.IsTupleType knows.

Overall this is a good fix with thorough tests. Items 1 and 2 are maintainability follow-ups, not merge blockers.

Retain mutable elements in nested tuples.

For a row such as ((Fixture, int), int), where Fixture implements IAsyncInitializer, this check does not inspect the nested tuple. The row stays whole, so discovery initializes a boxed copy of Fixture while invocation receives the uninitialized value from the original tuple. Recursively retain and reconstruct nested mutable elements. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/TUnit.Core/Helpers/DataSourceHelpers.cs at line 96:
Update the tuple-shape handling around TupleHelper.IsTupleType and
HasMutableTupleElementShape to recursively detect mutable elements in nested
tuples and retain/reconstruct those elements for invocation. Ensure
initialization changes to mutable elements, including boxed value types
implementing IAsyncInitializer, are reflected in the invoked row while
preserving the existing handling of non-nested tuple elements.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Close metadata for tuple parameters with omitted arguments.

For [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(int))] on Test<T>((T, int) pair, int extra = 5), this condition leaves the tuple parameter metadata erased to object. An object[] row containing (1, 2) is then spread before the closed invoker receives it, and the invoker cannot cast 1 to (int, int). Emit closed parameter metadata for this tuple shape as well.
