feat(sourcegen): inherit XML docs from [AssertionExtension] classes - #7692
Documented [AssertionExtension] classes now share their XML docs with their generated extension methods; others keep the "Extension method for X" placeholder. For each wrapped constructor the generator emits
/// <inheritdoc cref="T:MyLib.BetweenBoundsAssertion`1" path="/*[self::summary or self::remarks or self::typeparam]"/>/// <inheritdoc cref="M:MyLib.BetweenBoundsAssertion`1.#ctor(TUnit.Assertions.Core.AssertionContext{`0},`0,`0)" path="/*[(self::param and not(@name='context')) or self::exception]"/>
The class lends its summary, remarks and type parameter docs; the wrapped constructor lends its exceptions and its parameter docs except the context (named from the symbol). The receiver and the compiler-filled *Expression parameters stay undocumented, as in feat(sourcegen): inherit XML docs from [GenerateAssertion] source methods #7687.
Methods generated through NegatedMethodName keep the placeholder, as the class describes the positive assertion; so do classes documented only on a constructor.
The incremental model stores only the IDs, so doc edits regenerate nothing.
Fifteen built-in summaries ended with maintainer notes ("Delegates to CollectionChecks for the actual logic."), which users would now see; they are // comments now.
TUnit documents 55 of its 57 [AssertionExtension] classes, so "Extension method for X" in TUnit.Assertions.xml (net10.0) goes from 69 to 2. TUnit documents no constructors; the constructor element serves libraries that do.
Snapshot Tests: If I changed source generator output or public APIs:
I ran TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests and/or TUnit.PublicAPI tests
I reviewed the .received.txt files and accepted them as .verified.txt
I committed the updated .verified.txt files
Performance: If this change affects hot paths (test discovery, execution, assertions):
I minimized allocations and avoided LINQ in hot paths
I cached reflection results where appropriate
AOT Compatibility: If this change uses reflection:
I added appropriate [DynamicallyAccessedMembers] annotations
I verified the change works with dotnet publish -p:PublishAot=true
Testing
All existing tests pass (dotnet test)
I have added tests that cover my changes
I have tested both source-generated and reflection modes (if applicable)
Additional Notes
Tests: AssertionExtensionGeneratorTests.DocumentedAssertionClasses, two AssertionExtensionXmlDocsTests that check the inherited docs from source and from a package, and two incremental tests. Existing snapshots change only in their placeholder lines.
Run locally: TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests 571/571 on four frameworks, TUnit.SourceGenerator.IncrementalTests 85/85, TUnit.Assertions.Tests 6907 passed and 6 skipped, TUnit.PublicAPI 78/78; TUnit.Engine.Tests left to CI.
Checked by hand in Visual Studio 2026 and Rider 2026.2.4.1 and with Roslyn's Quick Info service, from project and package references. Known limitation: from source, Rider shows the class docs but not the constructor's parameters, and from a package it shows nothing, as with #7687.
Optional follow-ups: the extension class summary ("Generated extension methods for X."), the [GenerateAssertion] assertion class summary, and an ExpectationMessage-based summary.

New Features
Generated assertion extensions now inherit relevant XML documentation from their assertion classes and constructors, including summaries, remarks, type parameters, parameters, and exceptions. Negated methods retain their placeholder summaries.
Documentation
Updated XML documentation guidance to explain how generated extension methods handle inherited and placeholder documentation.
Tests
Added coverage for documentation inheritance, reference resolution, and incremental generation.
Extension methods generated for an [AssertionExtension] class carried
the summary "Extension method for X" even when the class and its
constructors were documented, so IntelliSense never showed those docs.
For a documented class, emit one inheritdoc for the class's summary,
remarks and type parameters, and one for the wrapped constructor's
exceptions and its parameters except the context. Only public
constructors get an extension, so both crefs also resolve from a
package. Undocumented classes keep the placeholder, and so do
NegatedMethodName methods, as the class describes the positive
assertion.
Fifteen built-in assertion classes ended their summaries with notes
for maintainers, which the extensions would now show to users; those
notes move to code comments.
The assertion extension generator now emits inherited XML documentation for documented assertion classes and constructors. Tests cover generated output, source and package documentation resolution, and incremental generation. Related assertion comments and documentation guidance are also updated.

Summary
Capture and emit inherited documentation src/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator/Generators/AssertionExtensionGenerator.cs, src/TUnit.Assertions/Conditions/*, docs/docs/assertions/extensibility/source-generator-assertions.md
The generator captures documentation IDs for documented assertion classes and constructors. Eligible positive methods inherit class summary, remarks, and type-parameter documentation, plus constructor parameter and exception documentation. Negated methods and methods without class documentation retain the placeholder summary. Related assertion XML comments are adjusted.
Generated output and inheritance cases tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/TestData/DocumentedAssertionExtension.cs, tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/AssertionExtensionGeneratorTests.cs, tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/AssertionExtensionGeneratorTests.*.verified.txt
Fixtures and tests cover documented and undocumented assertion cases, constructors, generic types, overloads, and negated methods. Verified snapshots show generated output across target frameworks.
Source and package documentation resolution tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/AssertionExtensionXmlDocsTests.cs, tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/AssertionExtensionXmlDocsTests.*.verified.txt, tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/ReferencesHelper.cs, tests/TUnit.Assertions.SourceGenerator.Tests/XmlDocsRegressionTests.cs
Tests check inherited documentation references against source symbols and emitted package metadata. The shared reference helper filters out the test assembly, and existing regression tests use that helper.
Tests check that adding assertion documentation changes generated output, while changing only the documentation text leaves tracked steps and outputs cached.

A rabbit reads the docs at dawn, And finds the class notes carried on. The parameters now appear, While negated names stay clear. Fresh snapshots hop into the light.
The change is well scoped and consistent with #7687. Only the doc IDs go into the incremental model, so doc edits don't regenerate output. The NegatedMethodName case correctly keeps the placeholder. The snapshot tests cover documented, class-only, constructor-only, undocumented, generic and negated cases.
Minor observations, none blocking:
GetDocumentationCommentXml returns empty when the compilation has no DocumentationMode. In that case the generator silently falls back to the placeholder, which is sensible. The docs paragraph could say that GenerateDocumentationFile is required, as it already does for the method case.
When the class is documented but the constructor is not, the extension method gets no parameter docs. This is fine because the generated code has #pragma warning disable, but it's worth knowing for library authors.
Moving the 15 maintainer notes from /// to // is the right call. It avoids leaking internal notes into public IntelliSense.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.
Summary
Generated extension methods now inherit XML docs from documented [AssertionExtension] classes and their wrapped constructors.
Generated assertion extensions show docs from documented classes and constructors.
Built-in assertion summaries keep maintainer notes out of generated docs.
Intentional behavior acknowledged by JohnVerheij: negated methods and classes documented only through constructors keep their placeholders. JohnVerheij also notes that Rider does not show constructor parameter docs from source or inherited docs from packages; this is a known limitation shared with the earlier implementation.
