Review — fix(tauri): identify foreign process on core port + consent-gated force-quit (#3331)
Solid, well-structured PR. The design is genuinely careful: ownership is re-validated immediately before the kill (closing the recover→consent window), the self-pid and owner-change cases are refused, Windows guards kernel pids 0/4 and classifies taskkill exit codes, the parsers are pure and unit-tested, and the frontend correctly upgrades "Fix Automatically" into a consent-gated, red-styled "Force-quit {name}" button with full i18n parity across all 15 locales. Consent gating is sound — the backend only ever kills whatever currently holds the core port, so a buggy/forged frontend pid can't widen the blast radius.
I'm requesting changes on one hardening item on the kill path plus a couple of smaller notes. None are demonstrably exploitable today, but this is a force-kill feature so the defense-in-depth gap is worth closing before merge.
Blocking-ish (hardening on a kill path)
core_process.rs:1082(validate_kill_target) — Unix kill path lacks the protected-pid guard the Windows path has. Windows refuses pids 0/4 in bothfind_pid_on_port(parser) andkill_pid_*; the Unix side has no equivalent andkill(0, sig)broadcasts to the caller's entire process group (OpenHuman + its CEF children). Not known to be reachable vialsof -t -sTCP:LISTEN, but the asymmetry on a force-kill path should be closed (refusepid <= 1). See inline.
Non-blocking
core_process.rs:780— escalation to SIGKILL is gated by a barestill == Some(pid), notvalidate_kill_target. Leaves a narrow pid-reuse window (same pid number rebinding the port within 500ms) that the PR's "PID-reuse safe" claim doesn't actually cover. See inline.core_process.rs:774— SIGTERM result is double-discarded (let _ = spawn_blocking(...).await), unlike the force-kill branch which surfaces panics. Alog::debug!on TERM error would help diagnosis. See inline.- Test coverage: the
force_quit_port_ownerorchestration itself (TERM → re-validate → KILL escalation → restart, and theensure_running-fails message) has no Rust test — only the purevalidate_kill_target/parsers are covered. Understandable given it spawns real processes, but worth a note. Frontend Vitest coverage is good. - Minor UX: when
process_namefails,namefalls back toformat!("PID {pid}"), so the owner string renders as "PID 4242 (PID 4242) is using the network port…" and the button reads "Force-quit PID 4242". Functional, slightly awkward.
Nothing here is a correctness blocker for the happy path; the request-changes is to get the Unix-side guard symmetric with Windows on a privileged kill path. Thanks for the thorough tests and i18n work.
…ce-quit (tinyhumansai#3331) When port 7788 is held by a non-OpenHuman process (or a stale instance the automatic reap can't terminate), startup recovery did nothing and the user was stuck on a generic "couldn't start" screen with no way to act. Recovery now identifies the owning process (pid + name), surfaces it in the boot-check screen, and offers an explicit, consent-gated "Force-quit <name>" button that re-validates port ownership immediately before terminating and refuses protected/self pids. - core_process: PortOwner + RecoveryOutcome.foreign_owner; identify_port_owner, process_name (tasklist/ps, pure parsers), validate_kill_target, force_quit_port_owner (term -> revalidate -> kill -> restart). - lib: force_quit_port_owner Tauri command. - BootCheckGate + bootCheck orchestrator + service: surface the owner and wire the consent-gated force-quit; re-run the boot check on success. - i18n: new keys translated across all locales. PR #3946 — identify foreign process on core port + consent-gated force-quit (#3331)
Walkthrough
When port 7788 is held by a foreign (non-OpenHuman) process, the old recover_port_conflict only reaped stale OpenHuman pids and otherwise dead-ended on a generic "couldn't start" screen. This PR identifies the owning process (pid + name), surfaces it in the boot-check UI, and offers an explicit, consent-gated force-quit that re-validates port ownership immediately before each signal. Well-structured, well-tested, and the kill path is genuinely careful.
Necessity check
- Problem real? Yes — issue #3331 (Windows 11), maintainer-confirmed gap: foreign port owner not handled.
- Right size? Yes — ~700 LOC but ~70% is i18n (13 locales) + tests; core logic is compact.
- Right approach? Yes. Not a "kill-the-process band-aid" — it's a consent-gated fix for a real recovery gap, with PID-reuse re-validation. RCA bucket: real defect (missing recovery branch), not a suppression.
- Recommendation: Ship.
Lifecycle / kill-path gate (the central risk)
This is a "force-quit a foreign process" PR, so the kill path got the most scrutiny:
- Consent-gated — the only pid ever killed is the one surfaced to the user and clicked (
onForceQuit(foreignOwner.pid)→force_quit_port_owner(pid)). No auto-kill. - Correct identification before kill —
validate_kill_targetrequires the currentfind_pid_on_portowner to equal the consented pid before both TERM and KILL (escalation re-runsvalidate_kill_target, not a bare== Some(pid)). Refuses self-pid,pid <= 1,pid == 4. The Unixlsof -iTCP:<port>selector ANDs protocol+port (the earlier-iTCP -i:<port>OR-match bug was fixed in 80a36cc). Windowsparse_netstat_pidmatchesLISTENING+ exact:portsuffix and skips protected pids. So only the process currently bound and LISTENing on the exact consented port is ever signalled. - Cross-platform — Unix
lsof/ps/SIGTERM→SIGKILL; Windowsnetstat/tasklist/taskkillwith protected-pid guards mirrored inprocess_kill.

Minor / Refactor
1. app/src-tauri/src/core_process.rs — residual TOCTOU on the final kill (low)
The kill is "PID-reuse safe" for the decision (re-validation gates each signal), but there is still an irreducible sub-millisecond window between the last find_pid_on_port and the actual taskkill/SIGKILL syscall where the pid could be reused. This is inherent to PID-based termination and well-mitigated by re-validating on port ownership (a reused pid would also have to re-bind the exact port + LISTEN). No change required — calling it out as a known limit. Optional hardening: capture process start-time in PortOwner and compare it in validate_kill_target for a stable identity.
// optional, not required for this PR:
pub struct PortOwner { pub pid: u32, pub name: String, pub start_time: Option<u64> }
// validate_kill_target also asserts start_time matches before signallingNitpicks (0)

Verified / looks good
- 3-way verify: issue #3331's three asks (identify owner on Windows, consent-gated termination + guidance, name the owner in the message) are all delivered — no over/under-claim.
validate_kill_targetunit-tested across owner-gone / owner-changed / self-pid / protected-pid (0,1,4) refusals.parse_tasklist_name/parse_ps_commare pure + tested (incl. "no tasks" sentinel, blank, path-basename).- Frontend: owner surfaced, force-quit button replaces "Fix Automatically" only when an owner is known, success re-runs the boot check, failure message shown, empty-name renders cleanly — all covered by Vitest.

recover_port_conflictonly reaped stale OpenHuman processes.
