Summary

  • Registry tab gets one-click Add for hosted MCP servers that need no API key.
  • Add button declares the server in mcp.json (the existing unified install path), then opens the sign-in flow for OAuth servers or connects directly.
  • Servers already declared via Add show "Added" state. Stdio, API-key, and Smithery servers keep "Open page".

Problem

The directory-only design for MCP server discovery means hosted servers with no required inputs or secrets still need hand-written mcp.json entries. The existing rationale holds: we don't guess launch commands or credentials. But for hosted servers a curated directory already vetted, the one-click declaration path should be available.

Solution

  • app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd.ts (new): isAddCandidate picks deployed, non-Smithery rows without an API key; resolveHostedEntry accepts only one concrete http(s) URL with no required inputs, secret properties or required env keys, and returns just {url, description}; declareServer does the read-modify-write via configGet/configSet and refuses an existing key.
  • McpRegistryBrowser.tsx: Add, Added, and Open-page states; inline error display with step-only Retry; hands off to ConnectAuthModal for OAuth.
  • McpServersTab.tsx: re-reads the installed list and statuses after a Registry add (onDeclared).
  • i18n: 7 keys in all 16 locales, plus rewritten intro text.
  • Rust: wording only. The channels.mcp_registry_browse capability description and the registry README/module docs no longer say "browse-only". No logic change.
  • Design notes: No new core RPC (all write paths would need the same lock); registry_get on-click only. Lockfile is unchanged.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated — new registryAdd.test.ts, rewritten McpRegistryBrowser.test.tsx, a McpServersPage.test.tsx case; vitest 315 pass; Playwright mcp-tab-flow.spec.ts 26/26 (built web bundle, mocked RPCs)
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80% — registryAdd.ts 100%, McpRegistryBrowser.tsx 98.8%
  • Coverage matrix updated — MCP registry row in docs/TEST-COVERAGE-MATRIX.md reworded for one-click add
  • All affected feature IDs listed in Related — mcp is the only feature
  • No new external network dependencies — registry fetch is existing mock backend behavior
  • Manual smoke checklist updated — N/A: no release-cut surfaces touched
  • Linked issue closed via Closes in Related section — yes

Impact

  • Runtime impact: frontend only — MCP Registry tab UI only
  • No backend logic, RPC or config schema changes; Rust changes are doc and capability text only
  • Backward compatible; existing directory entries and manual mcp.json edits work unchanged

Commit & Branch

Validation Run

  • prettier and eslint on changed files — clean (4 pre-existing react-hooks/set-state-in-effect warnings in untouched code); pnpm i18n:check — 0 missing keys; pre-push hook (cargo check, fmt, clippy, lint) — pass
  • pnpm typecheck — pass
  • Focused tests: mcp-tab-flow.spec.ts 26/26 pass
  • Rust fmt/check — pass (cargo fmt, cargo check)
  • Manual desktop app click-through — not yet (ready for user verification)

Validation Blocked

  • command: N/A
  • error: N/A
  • impact: pre-existing i18n:english:check failure (memoryPage.engine.builtin.title in fr/pt) — not from this PR

Behavior Changes

  • Intended: One-click Add for registry-hosted MCP servers (zero required inputs).
  • User-visible: New Add button on registry entries that qualify, leading to a declare-and-connect flow. Servers already declared in mcp.json (by any path) now show as "Added" instead of being hidden from the directory.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: existing mcp.json edits, manual registry navigation, and all other server types (Stdio, API-key, Smithery) unchanged
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch: Add button only appears on isAddCandidate entries; non-qualifying servers use the existing Open-page flow

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Add eligible hosted servers from the Registry in one step. Servers that need authentication prompt you to sign in; servers that need setup show guidance.
    • Already-declared servers remain visible with an “Added” status. Other servers can still be opened for setup instructions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Add and connection failures now show clear messages, with options to retry from the failed step.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Registry now adds eligible hosted MCP servers to mcp.json, refreshes the installed-server list, and connects servers or opens sign-in. Entries that need manual setup retain the page-opening flow. Declared entries remain visible with an Added state.

Changes

Hosted Registry Addition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hosted entry resolution and declaration
app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd.ts, app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd.test.ts
The new helper identifies eligible hosted servers, validates endpoints and setup requirements, and declares accepted entries through the configuration API while preserving existing entries. Tests cover accepted and refused entries and configuration errors.
Registry add, connect, and retry flow
app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpRegistryBrowser.tsx, app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpRegistryBrowser.test.tsx
The browser adds eligible entries, refreshes installed-server state, and connects servers without authentication or opens the sign-in dialog when authentication is needed. It shows setup notices and row-level errors, retries from the failed step, and keeps declared rows visible as Added.
Tab integration and flow coverage
app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpServersTab.tsx, app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpServersPage.test.tsx, app/test/playwright/specs/mcp-tab-flow.spec.ts
The tab refreshes installed servers after a declaration. Page and Playwright tests cover addition, connection, authentication, setup fallback, write retry, and opening a server page.
Registry descriptions and translations
app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpJsonEditor.tsx, app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpServersPage.tsx, app/src/services/api/mcpClientsApi.ts, app/src/lib/i18n/*.ts, crates/openhuman-core/src/mcp/registry/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/platform/about_app/catalog_auth_channels_team.rs, docs/TEST-COVERAGE-MATRIX.md, docs/gitbooks/en/developing/architecture/mcp-registry.md, gitbooks/developing/architecture/mcp-registry.md
Comments, documentation, coverage notes, and translations describe hosted-server addition, setup guidance for other entries, and add or connection states and errors.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 50a51

Clicking Add on two registry rows in quick succession can cause one server to be removed again. Serialize the mcp.json read-then-write before merging. The other issue is a misleading error message with a working retry.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 50a51

One-click addition affects shared server configuration and starts authentication or connection. Concurrent changes may be overwritten, and stale same-name configuration may direct setup to a different endpoint. Existing credential protections remain, but some validation and connection guarantees could not be confirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Add reads the complete server map and later submits a replacement document without a version or conditional-update predicate. Different rows remain independently actionable, so concurrent additions or another configuration writer can lose changes; a stale snapshot can also restore superseded connection settings. Replacement semantics already existed, but this PR expands their automated concurrent use. Backend stale-write protection could not be verified.
  • Medium · security · inferred: When declaration returns exists, Add still selects an installed server solely by qualified name and authenticates or connects its server ID without comparing its endpoint with the resolved Registry URL. A stale or concurrently changed same-name entry can therefore redirect setup to an unintended existing endpoint. The Added-state UI normally blocks this path, and influencing the existing configuration requires separate authority; registry-publisher-only exploitation is not established.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The observed ownership boundary is the configuration-selected workspace's MCP store. A stale replacement can affect its entire server map, not just the selected row. Downstream impact follows connections and credentials supplied to those servers; external service permissions and environment exposure are not specified by the available evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported conditional identity-confusion path requires a stale or concurrently changed same-name installation: declaration preserves the old entry, lookup selects it by name, and authentication targets its server ID. The modal can derive provider hints from Registry details while credential submission targets that installed ID. This supports an endpoint-binding concern, not a demonstrated credential theft or registry-publisher-only attack.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Registry authentication hints do not authorize credential use: the installed server is probed through core, and detection failure defaults to token UI rather than direct connection. Configuration reads omit credential values, workspace handlers resolve their configured host, and remote tool descriptions retain the existing injection scanner.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failures retain the failed Add step, and a connection retry reuses the captured installed server without repeating declaration. Busy actions are disabled per row and errors remain local to that row. These controls limit repeated writes but do not establish cross-row atomicity or endpoint stability after another writer changes configuration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a shared atomic add-if-absent or version-checked configuration update across writers, returning a canonical server identity bound to the resolved endpoint. Revalidate that binding before authentication or retry, and coordinate connection initiation with the existing background lifecycle.
  • proposed — Document and verify upstream qualified-name constraints, and sanitize or safely encode server-name fields at the prompt boundary. This is defense in depth for a pre-existing interpolation pattern, not a verified vulnerability introduced by this PR.

Findings

  • high · critique · Reject URLs containing embedded credentials — `new URL` accepts values such as `https://user:password@mcp\.example\.com/mcp`, and this check then allows the original string to be returned and written to `mcp.json`. A directory-c (app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd\.ts:69)
  • medium · critique · Handle refresh failures after authentication — `onDeclared` is an async prop and can reject, but this callback fires it without a rejection handler. If refreshing the installed-server state fails after authentication succeeds, (app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpRegistryBrowser\.tsx:562)
  • medium · critique · Canonicalize equivalent hosted URLs before rejecting duplicates — The distinctness check compares URL strings rather than the parsed endpoint. A server whose hosted connections use equivalent spellings such as `https://mcp\.example\.com/mcp` and `h (app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd\.ts:94)
  • medium · critique · Serialize concurrent MCP declarations — Two simultaneous calls can both read the same document, observe that their names are absent, and then each write a snapshot containing only its own addition. The later `configSet` (app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd\.ts:110)
  • medium · security · Do not log raw add errors — This logs the raw error message returned by registry, declaration, authentication, or connection operations. Those messages may contain credentials, tokens, endpoint details, or us (app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpRegistryBrowser\.tsx:412)
  • medium · tests · Guard the mcp. read-modify-write against concurrent writes — declareServer does configGet then configSet as an unguarded read-modify-write. Nothing in runAdd serialises it: two rows can be added concurrently (each row's Add button is only di (app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd\.ts:110)

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a one-click add for hosted MCP registry servers, with a well-tested new module (registryAdd.ts) covering resolution refusals, declare semantics and the full add/retry/error flows in both unit and Playwright tests; the tests assert real behaviour (RPC payloads, write suppression, retry scoping) and would fail on regression. One concurrency gap remains in the new read-modify-write of mcp., and the docs/tests matrix updates match the code. Otherwise safe to merge. description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The description accurately matches the diff: the PR adds one-click Add for hosted, key-free MCP registry servers (registryAdd.ts with candidate/resolve/declare logic, row states in McpRegistryBrowser.tsx, an onDeclared re-read in McpServersTab.tsx, i18n keys in all locales, doc/capability text changes only in Rust), and the summary describes each of these faithfully. I found no significant diff behavior the description omits and no description claim the diff contradicts. _Code retrieval was unavailable (model: ladder embeddings returned 400 Bad Request: {"error":{"message":"unknown ladder vectors; known ladders are flash (also chat-v1, flash-v1), instant (also no-think, instant-v1), reasoning (also deepseek), max-reasoning (also max-reasoning-v1), deepseek-flash (also reasoning-v1, agentic-v1), deep (also luna), scribe, uncensored, vectors-oai3 (also embeddings-oai3-v1), vision (also vision-v1, multimodal-v1), image (also images-v1, image-v1), vi), so this review saw the diff alone._ _Memory was unavailable (model: cortex: v1/recall: error sending request for url (http://cortexdb:3141/v1/recall\)\), so this review ran without it._

e2e

  • Conclusion: Neutral
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a one-click add flow for hosted MCP servers in the Registry tab, and the Playwright spec mcp-tab-flow.spec.ts was extended to drive it end to end: one-click add with connection state asserted, OAuth sign-in dialog, needs-setup fallback, refused-write inline error with Retry, and declared-row listing. The edit to the open-page test (GitHub Tools → Notion Connector) is justified by the behaviour change, not a weakening. The Rust-side edits are documentation and a comment-only test tweak with no external surface. Coverage looks complete; safe to merge from the end-to-end perspective. P1 Badge Make registry additions atomic

When users click Add on two eligible rows before the first finishes (the UI leaves the other row buttons enabled), both calls can read the same mcpServers snapshot and then execute this replacement with only their own new entry. configSet is explicitly replace-not-merge (mcpClientsApi.ts:217-220 and config_ops.rs:41-53), so the later write uninstalls the server written by the earlier call and can likewise erase a concurrent editor/window change. Make this a core-side atomic add/merge, or at least serialize and rebase additions before replacing the document, keeping persistence policy in the core.

P1 Badge Avoid racing the background connection

For an eligible no-auth server, declareServer first invokes config_set, which queues a background connection for every newly added enabled server (config_ops.rs:43-45,71-74), and this line then starts a second connection to the same server_id. On a slow endpoint those attempts overlap and issue duplicate connection/initialization work; the existing declare_and_connect_registry_echo_server helper at tests/agent_harness_e2e.rs:3973-3975 explicitly disables its declaration to prevent exactly this race. Either rely on the queued connection/status or suppress auto-connect before making the explicit attempt.

P1 Badge Move hosted-entry policy into the Rust core

resolveHostedEntry now defines the product's registry-to-install contract in React code: which transports and URL schemes count, which schema or environment requirements block installation, and the exact entry persisted. Those are business and persistence rules coupled to upstream metadata; keeping them here prevents other core/RPC callers from sharing the contract and lets the TypeScript heuristic drift from the Rust registry adapter. Move resolution and declaration behind a core RPC and leave the component to present or orchestrate its result.

P1 Badge Put the new flow in the required E2E suite

The new add, OAuth, and refusal flow coverage is added under app/test/playwright/specs, but the repository requires mocked browser or desktop frontend-flow coverage under app/test/e2e/specs/ and use of its shared element helpers. Add corresponding behavior coverage in that required suite (or move the scenario) so this feature is exercised by the canonical flow harness.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Concurrent adds can drop each other's mcp.json entries.

declareServer reads the document, then calls configSet with the full map. configSet replaces the document, and the core uninstalls any server that is missing from it. Suppose the user clicks Add on two rows quickly. Both calls can read the same document before either one writes. The second write then omits the first server, and the core removes it. Nothing serializes calls to runAdd across rows.

The smallest fix is a module-level promise chain that serializes declareServer calls.

Review comment at @app/src/components/channels/mcp/registryAdd.ts around lines
109 - 119:
Serialize calls to declareServer with a module-level promise chain so each
configGet and configSet completes before the next declaration begins. Move the
existing read/check/write logic into a single-operation helper and ensure a
rejected declaration does not block subsequent calls.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Separate declaration failures from refresh failures. In app/src/components/channels/mcp/McpRegistryBrowser.tsx Lines 378-389, declareServer completes before the installedList() lookup. If that lookup fails, the handler still selects the add-failure message even though the server was declared. Add a distinct post-declaration refresh message and select it for that failure path.

Add a distinct English message for failures refreshing the installed-server list
after declaration, and add its matching Spanish translation. At
app/src/lib/i18n/en.ts lines 1410-1410, add the English text; at
app/src/lib/i18n/es.ts lines 1263-1263, add the corresponding Spanish text.
Update the post-declaration refresh failure path in McpRegistryBrowser to select
this message instead of the add-failure message.

Reject URLs containing embedded credentials

new URL accepts values such as https://user:password@mcp.example.com/mcp, and this check then allows the original string to be returned and written to mcp.json. A directory-controlled URL can therefore cause credentials to be persisted and subsequently sent to the endpoint, while also exposing them in local configuration. Reject URLs when parsed.username or parsed.password is non-empty before returning success.

Handle refresh failures after authentication

onDeclared is an async prop and can reject, but this callback fires it without a rejection handler. If refreshing the installed-server state fails after authentication succeeds, the UI silently closes the modal and produces an unhandled promise rejection instead of reporting or preserving the failure state. Handle the rejection explicitly, including suitable user-facing error state or retry behavior.

Canonicalize equivalent hosted URLs before rejecting duplicates

The distinctness check compares URL strings rather than the parsed endpoint. A server whose hosted connections use equivalent spellings such as https://mcp.example.com/mcp and https://mcp.example.com:443/mcp is refused with multiple_urls, even though both connections address the same HTTP endpoint. Normalize URLs using the parsed URL (at least default ports and equivalent formatting) before inserting them into the set, while retaining the original or canonical URL for the resulting entry.

Serialize concurrent MCP declarations

Two simultaneous calls can both read the same document, observe that their names are absent, and then each write a snapshot containing only its own addition. The later configSet can therefore silently erase the other server, contradicting the function's promise to keep every other entry. Use an atomic add-if-absent operation in the API/core or serialize and retry the read-modify-write sequence.

Additional tests observation

priority medium uncertain

Guard the mcp. read-modify-write against concurrent writes

[RULE] read-modify-write-race

declareServer does configGet then configSet as an unguarded read-modify-write. Nothing in runAdd serialises it: two rows can be added concurrently (each row's Add button is only disabled for its own busy phase), or the user can save in the mcp. editor while an add is in flight. Each writer spreads the doc it read, so the later configSet silently drops the earlier writer's entry — a server the user just added disappears from mcp.. No test in the diff exercises concurrent adds or a concurrent editor save, so this regression path is uncovered.

[RULE] race-condition ·

setRowState(name, null);

const reason = errorText(err);
log('add %s failed at step=%s: %s', name, step, reason);

Do not log raw add errors

This logs the raw error message returned by registry, declaration, authentication, or connection operations. Those messages may contain credentials, tokens, endpoint details, or user-sensitive backend content, violating the repository rule against logging error messages and potentially exposing secrets through debug logging. Log only a fixed failure category and correlation fields, or omit the error text.
