Summary

  • I work at Keenable. This is the host-side follow-up to tinysearch#10, which shipped in TinySearch v0.4.0 (pinned here, now v0.5.1): Keenable appears in Connections → Search as a provider for the Search and Contents roles.
  • It works without a key. Once the user turns it on, TinySearch calls Keenable's keyless public endpoints, rate-limited per IP. An optional key in [search.keenable] (or KEENABLE_API_KEY) switches to the keyed endpoints for higher limits.
  • Off by default, last in both default role orders. Nothing changes for existing providers or configurations.

Problem

tinysearch_bus::PROVIDERS already lists keenable and the module serves it with no credential, but the host had no credentials slot for it, so direct_configured was always false: the provider resolved as unusable, the settings view did not list it, and a key could not be saved ("keenable does not take an API key").

Solution

  • Config: SearchConfig.keenable: SearchEngineCredentials, wired through credentials() / credentials_mut(), the OPENHUMAN_KEENABLE_API_KEY / KEENABLE_API_KEY env override, secret encryption (secrets.rs) and snapshot redaction, like the other provider keys.
  • Resolution: ResolvedProvider gains key_optional (providers::key_optional, true only for keenable). The direct route is reachable when key_configured || key_optional, which mirrors the rule TinySearch already applies in configured_provider_tools. key_configured keeps its meaning (a key is stored), so the UI can still say whether one is saved.
  • Settings RPC: keenable added to LISTED_PROVIDERS, with docs_url and a key_optional field on every provider entry.
  • Settings panel: directNeedsSetup skips the key prompt when the key is optional, so the tile turns Keenable on in one click. The connected row reads "No API key needed", the tile adds the same note, and the key dialog (via "Add key") shows a one-line hint that the key is optional. Two new strings in all 16 locales. Swatch colour added.
  • Tool gating: tool_group classifies keenable_* as Integrations, like the other provider prefixes, so a narrowed DomainSet gates them with their family.
  • TinyFish key (review finding): search.tinyfish.api_key was missing from secrets.rs and from the snapshot redaction list, so it was stored in plaintext and returned by the config snapshot. Now handled like every other provider key.
  • Chat: keenable_search / keenable_fetch get the same labels as the other providers' search and fetch tools (they show up with the Advanced "own tools" presentation).
  • Docs: web-search and privacy-and-security pages (both gitbooks copies), search/README.md, .env.example, and a coverage-matrix row (7.2.10).

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case): provider resolution (usable with no key once selected, off until selected, the only key-optional provider), settings RPC (enable without a key, optional key stored and never returned, managed route rejected), module config (no credential, then the stored key passed privately), env overlay precedence and blank values, snapshot redaction (Keenable and TinyFish), encrypted-config round trip (both keys, env overrides unset), tool-group classification, and two panel tests (one-click enable, optional-key dialog).
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: 91.1% (41/45 executable added lines), computed diff-cover style from this PR's own CI artifacts on b901153 (run 38351471353): Rust 36/40 from lcov-core.info of the rust-cov lane, frontend 5/5 from lcov-frontend.info of the checks lane. The four uncovered lines are the ? error returns of the new secrets.rs calls. Still current on f6caddb: that merge leaves this PR's code lines identical, and its rust-cov run hit the 100-minute job limit before writing a report. The gate's diff-cover step itself only runs when every lane passes, which main has not allowed yet (below).
  • Coverage matrix updated: new row 7.2.10.
  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed under ## Related.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced: all tests run against fixtures; the provider's HTTP lives in TinySearch.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface changed.
  • Linked issue: N/A, no issue for this.

Impact

  • Desktop settings and the core config only. A config written by this build gains an empty [search.keenable] table; older builds ignore it.
  • Security: the optional key is handled exactly like the other provider keys (encrypted at rest when secret encryption is on, never returned by the settings RPC or the config snapshot). With no key, requests carry no user or host identifier (TinySearch sends X-Keenable-Title: tinysearch).
  • Also fixed here, flagged in review: the TinyFish key is now encrypted at rest and redacted from the config snapshot (it was neither).

Commit & Branch

  • Branch: keenableai/openhuman:feat/keenable-search-provider
  • Commit SHA: f6caddb

Validation Run

  • rustfmt --edition 2021 --check on every touched Rust file: clean (the in-process e2e file keeps its 3 pre-existing rustfmt diffs, none added)
  • TypeScript syntax of all 23 touched app files (ts.transpileModule with diagnostics): clean
  • i18n: both new keys in all 16 locales, {provider} kept, line widths per prettier's printWidth: 100
  • Rust tests: hosted rust-cov lane on d730699, 9473 passed / 0 failed, including the five new Keenable tests and the extended snapshot-redaction test
  • Frontend: hosted checks lane on d730699, tsc, prettier, eslint, i18n and the full vitest-coverage run all passed
  • The first run's red lanes were main-side and are fixed on main since: gated-test-allowlist (profiles/surface_tests.rs) and two clippy errors in background_delivery.rs / relay/store.rs. Coverage Matrix Sync was ours (7.2.7 was taken), fixed in 75ee384.
  • Fifth run on f6caddb (main merged again: it moved gitbooks/ under docs/gitbooks/en/ and deleted the old copies, which this PR had edited alongside the new ones, so the old paths take the delete; nothing else conflicted): all five new Keenable tests pass in rust-cov (core lib 9798 passed, the 7 failures are main-side: files-dir migration, hosting registry pin, two media artifact-tool tests, module resolver, two wallet attestation tests), then the lane hit the 100-minute job limit and was cancelled; full vitest green. Other red lanes are main-side too: rust-fmt and prettier flag 175 files, none of them in this PR; kernel-floor / dep-sim (the flows profile resolves 328 packages against a limit of 326, and this PR touches no Cargo file); the embed approvals example timing out; Markdown Link Check (GitHub 503s and the old gitbooks/ link in docs/gitbooks/en/developing/README.md).
  • Fourth run on b901153 (main merged after refactor(tinysearch): move tinysearch implementation into its module, wire [components] toggle (#7528) #7663 moved provider labels, rendering and route types into tinysearch-bus v0.5.0; took theirs for render.rs, kept both sides of the tests, our matrix row is now 7.2.10): every Keenable/TinyFish test passes in rust-cov, including the encrypted round trip, which compiles again; full vitest (781 files) green. Red lanes are main-side: storage::local::forget and mcp::host::for_config missing in untouched tests, the tinysearch_module_e2e pin assertion still expects 0.4.2, three core lib tests (shell runtime, boot guard, channel turn state) and the agent-runtime-boundary / saas-ambient / gated-test-allowlist baselines.
  • Third run on 4ae1895 (review fixes + main merged; tool_group had moved to ops_tool_groups.rs): rust-fmt, tsc, prettier, eslint, i18n green, and every Keenable/TinyFish test passes in rust-cov (provider resolution, settings RPC, module config, env overlay, snapshot redaction, both tool_group_classifies_gate_and_harness_families copies). Red lanes are main-side after Remove managed runtimes and Kompress ML compression #7357 (managed runtimes removed): in_process_all / raw_coverage_all / openhuman-embed tests still reference config.node, config.runtime_python and openhuman_core::runtime, so they do not compile (the encrypted round trip lives there; it passed on d730699, its new TinyFish assertion has not run yet); every_domain_group_is_accounted_for_in_tool_group fails on Runtimes; gates-off build misses default_tools / BrowserOpenTool; vitest failures in untouched files (mascot i18n keys, toolPhrases, security panel); Markdown Link Check 404s in agent-harness.md and embed/cookbook.md.
  • Second run on 75ee384: our checks green again (rust-fmt, tsc, prettier, eslint, i18n, no clippy findings in touched files). The red lanes are new on main: rust-layout, agent-runtime-boundary, saas-ambient, module pins (tinywallet, tinychannels), tunnel/crypto.test.ts, and clippy in agent/tinyagents/mod.rs and web3/x402/seams.rs.

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: Keenable can be turned on from search settings and serves Search and Contents with no key; an optional key raises its limits.
  • User-visible effect: a Keenable tile under "With your own key" that connects in one click; "No API key needed" on its row.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: every other provider resolves exactly as before (key_optional is false for all of them, covered by a test).
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: the host's usability rule now matches TinySearch's configured_provider_tools for keenable.

Duplicate / Superseded PR Handling

  • Duplicate PR(s): none
  • Canonical PR: this one
  • Resolution: N/A

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Keenable as a web search and page-reading provider. It works without an API key, with usage limits based on IP address; adding a key increases those limits.
    • You can enable Keenable directly from the provider catalogue and add a key later if desired. Provider setup guidance is available in supported languages.
  • Security
    • Keenable and TinyFish API keys are protected when saved and are not exposed in configuration views.

TinySearch v0.4.0 ships the keenable provider (tinysearch#10): search and
contents roles on the direct route, keyless public endpoints by default, a
key moves it to the keyed ones. This wires it into the host:

- [search.keenable] credentials, KEENABLE_API_KEY env override, secret
encryption and snapshot redaction for the key
- key_optional on the resolved provider: Keenable's direct route is usable
once selected, with or without a key; the settings RPC reports it
- settings panel: one-click enable without the Connect dialog, "No API key
needed" detail, optional-key hint in the key dialog, swatch, 16 locales
- keenable_search / keenable_fetch chat tool labels, docs, coverage matrix

Keenable remains opt-in, and the existing selection, permission, and credential-protection controls remain in place. The principal change is allowing searches and page requests to reach an external provider without a key. No authorization bypass was established, but downstream enforcement could not be fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly reachable outcome is external Search and Contents execution using an enabled Keenable configuration, with agent-supplied tool arguments flowing to TinySearch. Host evidence bounds registration by selection and usability, but does not establish service-side tenant isolation, URL restrictions, or maximum downstream exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Profile-bound requests require authenticated configuration ownership, advertised capabilities, configured tool availability, and operator role membership; credential and route overrides are rejected. Keenable-prefixed tools now classify as Integrations for runtime-domain filtering rather than falling through to Platform. The profile-specific canonical-request checks do not apply to non-profile requests, whose downstream enforcement remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing transition sequence applies settings, saves them, then refreshes the module. Save failure prevents refresh; refresh failure can occur after persistence. Ordinary subsequent calls reload configuration, and module configuration changes are fingerprinted and serialized under a call lock. A failed reinitialization leaves the fingerprint unset so a later call retries. These mechanisms predate the PR rather than constituting newly introduced cross-agent credential protections.
  • observed — The shared decryption helper clears credentials it cannot decrypt. For selected Keenable, that recovery state can remain usable without a key. Provider selection, not successful key decryption, is therefore the execution gate; endpoint behavior after this transition remains outside the inspected host implementation.

  • Lane summary: The Keenable provider (keyless direct route with an optional key) is now implemented across core policy, settings RPC, snapshot redaction, secret encryption, env overlay, module config and the settings panel, with tests asserting the behaviour at each layer; both prior findings are fixed — the nonexistent `search-connect-keenable-key-optional` test id is replaced by a query on a row that actually renders, and `tinyfish` (plus `keenable`) is now added to the snapshot's redaction list and covered by both the unit and in-process E2E assertions. I found no remaining defect: the changed branches (`key_optional` in `directNeedsSetup`, the key-required relaxation, `resolve_with`'s `reachable` computation, `credentials`/`credentials_mut` lookup) each have a test that fails if the branch is removed. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `c004c7fec16a`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Stop querying the nonexistent optional-key test id

SearchPanelProviders.tsx does not render any search-connect-key-optional test id, so this getByTestId call throws as soon as the dialog opens. The new test therefore fails rather than checking the hint; query the rendered hint by its text or add and use a test id that the component actually exposes.

Redact the TinyFish API key from snapshots

tinyfish is a supported search provider with its own api_key, but it is absent from this redaction allowlist. For a configuration containing search.tinyfish.api_key, the full snapshot still serializes and sends that credential over RPC, defeating the surrounding credential-removal guarantee. Add TinyFish to the list (and keep the list aligned with the supported provider set).

P2 Badge Classify Keenable tools as integrations

When Keenable is enabled with the all_tools or one_provider presentation under a narrowed DomainSet, this new reachable provider registers keenable_search and keenable_fetch, but tool_group in crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/ops.rs has no keenable_ branch and therefore defaults both to Platform. An integrations-only context consequently drops them, while a platform-only context can expose them even when integrations are disabled; add the provider prefix to the integrations classifier and its drift test.

P2 Badge Add Keenable to the privacy disclosure

When a user enables this new keyless route, web requests go directly to Keenable, but the provider list in gitbooks/features/privacy-and-security.md:59 (and its docs/gitbooks/en mirror) still names every direct search provider except Keenable and describes the direct providers as bring-your-own-key. That leaves the privacy disclosure inaccurate specifically for the no-credential path; update both synced copies to state that Keenable is direct and can receive requests without a key.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

search.tinyfish.api_key was missing from secrets.rs and from the snapshot
redaction list, so it was stored in plaintext and returned by the config
snapshot RPC. Handle it like every other provider key.
…Keenable

- tool_group: keenable_* joins the other provider prefixes under
  Integrations (drift test extended)
- privacy-and-security (both copies): Keenable goes direct, keyless or keyed
- encrypted round-trip test: unset the Keenable and TinyFish env overrides
so an inherited value cannot replace the saved key
…provider

tool_group moved to ops_tool_groups.rs on main; the keenable_ prefix goes there.
