OpenHuman now hosts MCP server configuration, credentials, approvals, tool
execution and session lifecycle while TinyMCP owns MCP protocol behavior. Calls
go through TinyBus confidential operations; unavailable or incompatible modules
fail closed without a linked implementation fallback. Resumed conversations
retain their recorded tool declarations when the live catalog is cold.

This PR depends on canonical OpenHuman PR #7502 (Channels host cutover). Because
GitHub restricts canonical branch creation, the PR targets main; until #7502
merges, its displayed diff includes those prerequisite Channels commits. Its
release pins are TinyChannels v0.1.26 (2971561e14cc10c92b37291ae456f327b0747bb9),
TinyBox v0.1.24 (32eb0b7525451bf67a428a25b0237e2f391683bd), and TinyMCP
v0.14.3 (10b03d1ab00ecbd08bd41d5e83a5c350cbd7e357, bus contract 1.21). All
17 TinyMCP archives match checksum.toml and their GitHub asset digests. The
verified Ubuntu x86_64 shared library is SHA-256
110f48e73a6388ea65523d7659aae7c68a6ebedfb059a17dd737e8f542c79577.

The NormalizeIdentifier variant of TransformText preserves the existing
TinyTools identifier normalization semantics without changing the bus method
arity or member count. A standalone probe through the shipped TinyBus loader
verified the downloaded v0.14.3 manifest and exact 62-member contract, then
called the new variant and received search!. The combined host acceptance is
still queued on the shared build lock.

Completed checks on the combined source: both root and desktop locked Cargo
metadata, feature forwarding, crate-chain validation, module pin validation,
and strict module-boundary audit (zero violations, stale exceptions, temporary
exceptions or pending contracts). The full host focused tests, feature builds,
actual host integration tests and docs check remain queued; no pass is claimed
for those gates yet.

TinyRuntime and broader Sentry reporting changes remain outside this migration.

Add a helper that invalidates a thread's session for a single captured
tenant, bailing out if the channel session is cancelled while waiting for
the session table. This lets callers clear only their own tenant's entry
without mutating a replacement session.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Moved the `invalidate_thread_sessions_for_tenant` re-export into its
alphabetical position among the other re-exports in both the module and
ops files. No behaviour change.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reworded the `begin_typing_refresh` doc comment to state that returning `None` means the host does not create a local refresh timer, dropping the outdated mention of a legacy timer for local test doubles.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Remote control callbacks now check the session cancellation token before
mutating conversation state and race dispatch against cancellation, so
in-flight requests stop promptly when a channel session ends. Thread
invalidation is scoped to the current tenant and the core context is
propagated into the dispatch, keeping callback work attributed to the
right tenant.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Expose a test-only helper that acquires the real thread session table lock so
tests can exercise callback cancellation while the table is held. The helper is
re-exported through the web_chat module for use in tests.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test that holds the thread session table lock and drives the
remote-control invalidation callback to a pending state, then cancels the
sign-out token and asserts the callback resolves with an error instead of
mutating session state.

Remote control callbacks now run inside the captured core context and
tenant, and are cancelled when the channel session ends. This keeps
callback work tied to the session that started it instead of leaking
into whatever context happens to be current.

Strengthen the sign-out cancellation test to verify the callback carries the
exact core context it was scoped with, rather than merely a non-empty one, and
to check that the tenant defaults as expected.

Add a mock TinyMCP service and loopback Gitbooks provider so the search and
get-page tools can be exercised end to end. The test asserts both tools route
through the confidential module call path and forward the expected tool
arguments to the provider.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Update the locked versions of tinymcp and tinymcp-bus from 0.12.0 to 0.13.0 to match the new release.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Extend the gitbooks test module with the imports needed by the mock
provider setup, pulling in ModuleClient under the modules feature and
bringing IntoResponse into scope for the axum router.

Expose a validate_server_arguments method on the MCP module port and
forward it through McpConfiguredClient, returning Unavailable when the
process is shutting down. This lets callers validate server arguments
through TinyMCP's bounded implementation before use.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Implement validate_server_arguments on TinyMcpPort, forwarding the request to the module over a confidential call so callers can validate server arguments through the MCP port.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The error branch for a failed module call now reports a fixed message instead of unwrapping the call's error_message, and the unused ModuleCallError import was dropped. This removes dead handling that no longer matched the client API.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The live search smoke test now supplies a default Config when constructing the Gitbooks search tool, matching the updated constructor signature, and the expectation message was reworded to describe the tool rather than the client.

Adds a helper that builds model-facing tool presentations for configured MCP
servers, reusing TinyMCP's persistent cache and only listing a server when no
cached catalog exists. The host's prompt-injection filter is applied before
TinyMCP creates the stable declarations.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a configured_mcp_tools field to the turn prelude state so static MCP
tool declarations fetched through TinyMCP's owner cache can be carried
alongside the connected-server catalog and refreshed with it.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Configured MCP servers now surface their cached tool declarations as
first-class host tools, refreshed each turn from TinyMCP's persistent
owner cache and only listed when no catalog is cached yet. Execution
revalidates the server config and live tool safety before dispatching
the classified call.

Update the TinyBox module record to the v0.1.24 release, refreshing every
platform archive and checksum and raising the expected bus contract version to
1.14. The archlinux-rolling-x86_64 asset is replaced by separate archlinux-arm64
and archlinux-x86_64 entries, and the registry tests now assert the new manifest
and asset count.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

OpenHuman routes channel and MCP runtime operations through TinyBus module contracts. Channel startup, message handling, and progressive delivery use TinyChannels module operations. MCP registry, server-session, audit, and tool adapters use TinyMCP module calls.

Changes

Channel runtime and message handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Channel runtime lease and startup
crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/runtime/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/channel_runtime*, crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/services.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/security/credentials/ops/credential.rs
Startup prepares module-backed channel adapters, configures host callbacks and runtime limits, and closes the runtime lease. Session cancellation and resumption, plus workspace-scoped delivery persistence, are implemented in host-side runtime components.
Channel preparation and message flow
crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/bus/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/controllers/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/host/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/providers/relay/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/channels/routes.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/threads/store/bus.rs
Channel sends and inbound messages use module-prepared intents, identities, and inbound data. Dispatch, relay routing, progressive replies, callbacks, and thread persistence use the updated bus operations.

MCP module integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
MCP client and registry operations
crates/openhuman-core/src/mcp/{host.rs,module_client.rs,registry/*,audit/*}
Configured MCP clients handle registry configuration, connection operations, tool preparation, argument normalization, supervisor events, and audit reads and writes.
MCP sessions and tool execution
crates/openhuman-core/src/mcp/server/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/impl/network/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/ops.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/*
Server sessions serialize operations and clean up callbacks on accepted termination. Network tools and agent session catalogs use module calls and prepared tool presentations.

Dependencies and module records

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency wiring and module records

Merge Risk | 🟠 High · up to b8ad6

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to b8ad6

The incremental type update is consistent, but existing channel and MCP reliability, compatibility, and privacy risks remain unresolved and should be fixed before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b8ad6

The separation preserves several important controls, including confidential configured-tool calls and explicit cleanup ownership. However, installed-server tools lose a call-time safety check, and production-module behavior and combined integration acceptance remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Installed-server execution no longer rechecks host admission against the connected server's current tool definitions. A presentation screened from cached metadata can remain callable after a remote definition changes to one the host would reject. The base performed this check immediately before dispatch; the new executor normalizes and calls the prepared server/tool identity directly. Refresh-time screening reduces exposure, and static configured tools retain live checks, but equivalent enforcement for installed-server calls was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified admission regression affects agent execution of installed-server tools in the selected workspace. It requires an existing tool presentation and an execution attempt; the inspected path does not establish arbitrary tool selection or cross-tenant access. Its downstream authority depends on the configured MCP server and its granted capabilities.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A remote server controls advertised tool descriptions. Previously, installed-server execution reapplied the host description filter to the connected catalog and rejected a disallowed tool before dispatch. The cutover retains cached-catalog screening but removes this execution-time gate. This is a supported control regression, not a demonstrated prompt-injection exploit or verified module-side authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The static configured-tool adapter enforces host action policy, reloads configuration, checks current server identity, scrubs and screens live metadata, and sends classified execution arguments confidentially. These controls are stronger than the installed-server path and bound the concern to that separate adapter.
  • observed — Installed-server TOOL_CALL arguments use ordinary delivery at both base and head, so this behavior predates the PR. The new adapter also uses ordinary normalization and rendering calls, whereas the dedicated normalization adapter uses confidential delivery. The inspected evidence does not establish production rejection or disclosure from these modes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — MCP configured clients serialize lifecycle operations and retain opening/closing transition state across interrupted replies so subsequent operations can resume cleanup. Historical tool declarations do not independently restore execution authority when the live catalog is unavailable.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make sensitive argument and result delivery explicit across both MCP adapters, and add delivery-mode assertions for the installed-server normalization, execution and rendering sequence. This would resolve the pre-existing ordinary-call ambiguity without treating an unverified disclosure as an observed finding.

Magic index contract::METHODS[31].

A contract change that reorders methods silently calls a different member. Use a named constant for ResolveLocalGrants, as other members in this file use (DOCKER_STATUS, CLEANUP_DOCKER). Alternatively, look the member up by name.

Large duplication of the archive staging code.

The new ignored test copies about 50 lines from pinned_loader_serves_the_published_tinybox_release. Extract a helper such as stage_bundled_release(archive, record, asset) -> TempDir. The two tests would then share one staging path.

Send the unavailable reply when inbound preparation fails.

The relayed message is already recorded and claimed, and the caller already received accepted: true. If prepare_inbound fails, the turn returns without a reply to the gateway and without recording one. The user sees silence. The prepare_runtime_limits failure branch above (Lines 123-134) sends the "not available" message and records it. Use the same handling here.

Check that the channel service survives startup errors and no-op generations.

The channel task returns permanently when run returns an error or when it completes successfully without cancelling the session. This can stop channel listeners after a temporary ModuleChannelRuntime::prepare failure, and it can prevent channels from starting after sign-in if the initial configuration has no channels.

Keep the task alive for no-op generations, and retry recoverable startup failures with backoff. Reserve the terminal return for a failed close or another explicitly unrecoverable error.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Write the store in load_result only when pruning removed entries.

load_result calls write_state on every lookup miss. That rewrites the whole file atomically, even when prune_results removed nothing and even when the file did not exist before. A lookup miss is the common case for the module's idempotency check before a send. Each such check then costs a full serialize plus an atomic write under the workspace gate. The function also does not persist pruning when the lookup hits.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

IPv6 loopback never matches the "::1" check.

The url crate returns IPv6 hosts from Url::host_str() with brackets, for example "[::1]". The matches!(host, "localhost" | "127.0.0.1" | "::1") arm therefore never matches an IPv6 loopback endpoint. client_config silently drops a credentialed http://[::1]:port/mcp server, which the doc comment says is allowed. The check also misses other 127.0.0.0/8 addresses.

Match on url.host() instead and use is_loopback().

🐛 Proposed fix
-    let loopback = url

+        Some(url::Host::Ipv6(ip)) => ip.is_loopback(),
+        None => false,

A unit test with http://[::1]:8080/mcp in host_tests.rs would lock this in.

Then configured_tool_presentations returns Err, and the agent gets no configured MCP tools at all, including tools from healthy servers. A common case is a freshly added server that cannot be reached yet.

Elsewhere this module treats a broken third-party server as non-fatal. For example, boot::spawn_installed_servers logs and continues. Apply the same rule here: log the per-server failure and skip that server. Keep the ? only for for_config and the final prepare_agent_tools call.

🐛 Proposed fix (sketch)
-            let cached: Option<Vec<tinymcp_bus::McpTool>> = client
-                .call(
-                    &client_config,
-                    names::methods::STATIC_CACHED_LIST_TOOLS,
-                    (server.name.as_str(),),
-                )
-                .await?;
+            let cached: Option<Vec<tinymcp_bus::McpTool>> = match client
+                .call(
+                    &client_config,
+                    names::methods::STATIC_CACHED_LIST_TOOLS,
+                    (server.name.as_str(),),
+                )
+                .await
+            {
+                Ok(cached) => cached,
+                Err(error) => {
+                    tracing::debug!(server = %server.name, ?error, "[mcp] cached tools unavailable; skipping server");
+                    continue;
+                }
+            };

Apply the same match … continue pattern to the STATIC_LIST_TOOLS and scrub_static_tools calls.

The README describes an execution-time admission recheck that action_tool.rs no longer performs.

Line 25 says action_tool.rs "rechecks admission before execution". Lines 46-47 say "Execution rechecks that the configured tool is still present and safe." The new InstalledServerTool::execute_inner does neither. It does not check whether the server is still connected, and it does not run tools_safe_for_agent against the live tool list. It normalizes the arguments and calls TOOL_CALL directly. Only ModuleConfiguredMcpServerTool::execute in mcp_server_tools.rs still rechecks.

Choose one fix:

  • Restore the recheck in action_tool.rs. Fetch the live overview, run tools_safe_for_agent, and require presentation.remote_name to be present.
  • Or correct both README statements so they describe the actual behavior.

distinguish this from ModuleConfiguredMcpServerTool.execute, which still

After TinyMCP accepts a DELETE, a local cleanup error still produces a 5xx.

TinyMCP has already closed its session when http_session returns 204. The handler then removes the local entry. If terminate_callbacks() returns Err (callback join failure), the client gets server_error (502/500), but the session is already gone on both sides. A client that retries the DELETE then sees the module's not-found response, so the 5xx misreports the session state.

Log the local cleanup failure and keep returning the module's 204.

Gate fixture_proxy on the same cfg as the fixture field.

The fixture field exists only under #[cfg(all(test, feature = "modules"))] (Line 44). fixture_proxy is gated only by #[cfg(test)]. Running cargo test without the modules feature therefore fails to compile, because self.fixture does not exist in that configuration. The crate supports builds without modules: invoke has a #[cfg(not(feature = "modules"))] branch. The only caller, channel_runtime::runtime_transport, is already compiled only with modules.

Documentation pins TinyMCP v0.14.2 and contract 1.20, but the code pins v0.14.3 and contract 1.21.

crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/registry/records_mcp_connectors.rs declares version 0.14.3. registry_tests.rs asserts contract (1, 21). The inventory still names v0.14.2, commit e18f289..., contract 1.20 and "17 archives" for the old release. Update the table row and the "TinyMCP compatible release pin" section to match the v0.14.3 pin from the PR description (10b03d1..., bus contract 1.21).
