Scope

Advances #7434 under #7419. Extend the storage-bypass ratchet across all Rust host crates and curated TinyAgents session/task/completion, TinySkills catalog, and TinyMCP registry/audit owners. Detect raw mutations, tempfile builders, JSON writers, known writer helpers, database/log openers, file-backed constructors, and the JSONL task opener.

Both CI profiles run the guard through cancellation supervision. Scanner, debt policy, JSON/Markdown inventories, and shared comment-masker changes arm the scripts self-test lane. The merge preserves main's module-source guard, private runner contract, coverage target inventory, and other CI changes.

Debt policy

  • Preserve canonical main's 57-site core baseline byte-for-byte; neither baseline regeneration nor history validation can grow it.
  • Establish 67 exact reviewed extension identities, each with classification, reason, and an owning issue. They must exist at the canonical merge base and its recorded vendor gitlinks. After establishment the extension can only shrink. Branch-added, copied, or moved writers cannot be baselined.
  • Audit 17 current canonical exclusions, retaining main's read-only import/bootstrap/artifact policy and removing retired file-store fallbacks. Exact allowances cannot authorize a second occurrence or another writer in the file, and later allowances cannot grow.
  • Missing canonical history/baselines, missing or empty curated sources, duplicate records, invalid metadata, and stale exclusions fail closed. Symlink spellings of a real checkout do not bypass history validation.

Updating this initial inventory for current main removes 53 retired extension sites and reviews 11 existing canonical sites: artifact deliverables, legacy memory migration checkpoints, a test-only migration fixture, MCP scratch-copy imports, tinymemes legacy document retirement, and downloads. The thread facade and turn-state mirror replace removed classic store paths in the curated roots.

Validation

  • Focused scanner/debt/lane suite: 78 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped.
  • The new current-owner-path regression failed against the outdated curated roots, then passed after updating them.
  • Actual repository scan through scripts/ci-cancel-aware.sh: passed with canonical-history validation, 57 core + 67 reviewed extension sites.
  • Scoped Prettier checks and git diff --check: passed. The CI paths filter retains its existing single-quote style.
  • Core baseline verified identical to upstream/main. No Rust source, Cargo dependency, or gitlink changes relative to main; no Cargo build was needed.
  • Merge commit: 912251333d; validation/push head: 3bc5437c58. Every original and checkpoint commit is preserved.

Boundaries

These 124 retained rule identities are not distinct stores or completed migrations. The guard does not resolve arbitrary aliases, expand macros, or perform callgraph/dataflow analysis. Classifications distinguish classic/import, machine/bootstrap, scratch, export, read-only, and unmigrated behavior; they do not establish tenant authority or cloud isolation. Native storage backend implementations remain outside this bounded host/curated-source scan.

See scripts/ci/storage-bypass.md for coverage, policy bounds, and reproduction commands.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • CI now scans a broader set of Rust and selected vendor sources for storage-related patterns. Reviewed exceptions require a reason and issue link, and checks reject new findings or unreviewed changes to coverage records.
    • The storage check runs in hosted and EX63 static-check lanes, and changes to its checker and policy files trigger the scripts-area checks.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for pattern detection, exception validation, historical checks, and CI lane behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on scan coverage, policy inventories, and verification requirements.

Add a case asserting that a Tokio file write inside the embed crate is
reported as a new storage-bypass site, so the host storage scan is
verified to catch async writers outside the storage module.

Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Extend the storage bypass test suite to check that every host crate rejects a new raw state writer, that file mutations, temporary builders and serializers are flagged, and that known filesystem writer helpers and vendored openers with database or stream paths are findings. Also verify that baseline regeneration cannot accept an additional core writer.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The scan now covers every crate's src directory plus a curated set of vendored
session and registry paths, and adds rules for file mutation, writer helpers,
and store openers that take persistent paths. Baseline writes are restricted to
the original core findings and refuse to grow, so new writers must be fixed
rather than baselined.

…debt

The storage-bypass scanner now strips Rust comments before matching most
rules so commented-out code no longer trips the ratchet, and vendored-open
hits require a path qualifier. Findings collection was extracted into a
reusable function and the check now validates coverage debt against an
extension list and, on real checkouts, Git history.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a script that scans the codebase for storage bypasses and reports
the accumulated debt so it can be tracked and reduced over time.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The inline allowlist of storage bypass sites is replaced by a JSON file whose
entries must carry a non-empty reason and a tracking issue URL, so every
exemption is auditable and the checker fails loudly on malformed entries.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Updated the issue references in the storage bypass allowlist so each
entry points at the tracking issue that now owns it, since the previous
links had been consolidated or reassigned.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The write-baseline test now asserts that the command exits non-zero and
leaves no baseline behind when the debt baseline is absent, replacing the
previous expectation that it would record the current sites.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The storage-bypass check now verifies audited allowances against the
canonical merge base, rejecting stale, duplicate, or newly added
exclusions so the allowlist can only shrink. Baseline writing was moved
after the ratchet comparison so it refuses growth and tightens the
recorded debt instead of overwriting it.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

The vendored-open rule now matches any owning store opener call and
requires a persistent path literal in the same statement, instead of
baking the path check into the pattern. The rule list check was replaced
with a helper lookup so the searchable input selection stays in sync
with the rules.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Register the storage-bypass check as an always-on lane in the self-hosted CI plan so the storage bypass guard runs on every build.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests asserting the storage-bypass check runs under cancellation
supervision in both the hosted and ex63 profiles, and that it is armed as
an always-on gate. Also cover the debt scanner's fail-closed behaviour
when canonical base history is missing, and confirm quoted database
opener examples are not counted as host persistence.

Document how to bypass storage in CI, covering the steps and
caveats involved so the workaround is discoverable.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reformatted the storage-bypass checker, debt validation, and their tests to satisfy the project's formatting rules, wrapping long expressions and call arguments. No behaviour changed.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The storage bypass checker previously skipped allowance and history validation whenever a root was supplied, which let fixture runs bypass checks that CI relies on. It now detects whether the given root is a real Git checkout and enforces history validation in that case, while still allowing isolated fixtures without Git.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The success output now reports the original core and reviewed extension
baseline counts separately instead of a single findings total, so the
message matches how the ratchet is actually tracked.

Add tests asserting that duplicate core baseline records are rejected
rather than inflating the retained debt, and that a real checkout with a

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

The CI path filter now lists the storage bypass checker, its debt policy
module, and their JSON and Markdown companions so changes to them trigger
the scripts lane. The affected tests and scripts were also reformatted to
satisfy the project's line-wrapping style.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test asserting that a curated vendor root which exists but contains no Rust source is reported as an empty curated source rather than counted as debt shrinkage.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The storage-bypass check now raises an error when a curated vendor root
yields no Rust sources in a real checkout, so an empty or missing
directory can no longer silently shrink the debt baseline. The
corresponding test was updated to populate every curated root, including
file-based entries, so it exercises the new guard.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The storage bypass notes now state that curated vendor files must be readable and curated directories must contain Rust source, so absent or empty checkouts cannot count as debt removal. The focused control list was extended to cover absent or empty curated source and duplicate core records, along with the failures those controls reproduced before their fixes.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request expands the storage-bypass checker to scan Rust sources across crate and curated vendor roots. It adds debt and history validation, inventories for extensions and allowances, and runs the check in the static CI lane. It also adds scanner, policy, and lane tests and documentation.

Changes: Storage-bypass CI guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rust source scanning
scripts/ci/check-storage-bypass.mjs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass.test.mjs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass-debt.test.mjs
The checker scans crate and curated vendor Rust sources for storage operations. It adds filesystem-mutation, writer-helper, and vendored-opener rules. Tests cover scanned patterns, source requirements, and scanner exclusions.
Debt and history validation
scripts/ci/storage-bypass-debt.mjs, scripts/ci/storage-bypass-extension.json, scripts/ci/storage-bypass-allow-reasons.json, scripts/ci/check-storage-bypass.mjs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass-debt.test.mjs, scripts/__tests__/storage-bypass.test.mjs, scripts/ci/storage-bypass.md
Debt validation checks identities, metadata, duplicates, stale records, and growth against history. The checker loads extension and allowance inventories and refuses baseline writes when findings are added. Tests and documentation cover these controls.
Static lane integration
scripts/ci/self-hosted/lanes-plan.mjs, .github/ci-paths-filter.yml, scripts/__tests__/self-hosted-lanes.test.mjs
The static lane runs the check through ci-cancel-aware.sh. The scripts filter includes checker and debt-policy paths. Lane tests cover scheduling and filter activation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3bc54

The storage CI check may fail because its shallow checkout lacks the history it needs. Provide full history for that lane before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3bc54

The change strengthens storage-policy enforcement without adding application privileges or changing service deployment. The principal design risk is dependence on complete source and history inputs, together with the limited guarantees of lexical scanning. The inspected CI path rejects validation failures rather than silently disabling the check.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct exposure introduced by this change is repository-wide CI admission and availability. The inspected command reads repository-controlled source and history; it does not introduce an application-facing path to tenant data or a new storage backend authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For the inspected default CI invocation, edited debt records are checked against canonical merge-base identities. Initial extension records require historical findings; later records must already exist in the historical extension. Allowances receive analogous historical checks, preventing manifest edits alone from approving a newly detected branch-added writer.
  • observed — An explicit isolated fixture root can omit historical enforcement. The scheduled CI command does not select that mode, while real-checkout detection preserves enforcement across symlink spellings.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The guard is intentionally lexical: it does not resolve arbitrary aliases, expand macros, or infer variable destinations. Its accepted state therefore constrains recognized source patterns, not every possible storage bypass. This limitation is explicitly documented rather than represented as runtime isolation proof.

…story

The history enforcement check compared git's reported top-level path against the
raw root string, so symlinked checkouts were misclassified and could skip the
canonical history requirement. Both call sites now share a sameCheckout helper
that compares realpath-resolved paths, and the tests were reformatted to match.

The storage-bypass notes now record that a later review reproduced two real
symlink-root bypasses, where missing curated source was ignored and `--root`
skipped required canonical history, and that shared canonical-path checkout
detection fixes both. The focused suite count is updated from 60 to 62 passing
controls to reflect the added coverage.

Add tests asserting that FileCatalogStore::new calls are reported as
file-store-new findings when no matching memory store exists, and that

P2 Badge Cover SQLite stores constructed with new

When no storage backend is configured, FlowState::open constructs tinyflows_sqlite::flows::SqliteStateStore::new(...) in crates/openhuman-core/src/flows/tinyflows/state.rs:37-44, which persists flows/flows.db; this rule only accepts type names beginning with File, and no vendor/tinyflows owner source is curated, so the known fallback produces no finding and future changes to its writer remain outside both inventories. The production SqliteStateStore::new call is fresh evidence beyond the earlier FileCatalogStore case; include SQLite store constructors/their owner and classify this site.

P2 Badge Include durable checkpointer openers in the scan

When no storage backend is configured, open_delegation_checkpointer opens graph_checkpoints.db with tinyagents_graph::SqliteCheckpointer::open in crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/orchestration/delegation.rs:298-318, and crates/openhuman-core/src/flows/tinyflows/caps/ops.rs:665-694 similarly opens flows/checkpoints.db; this rule only recognizes Store/Ledger types, while neither TinyAgents graph nor TinyFlows SQLite owner is curated, so both known durable fallbacks and future checkpointer writers yield no finding. Include *Checkpointer::open and the owning sources, then classify these fallbacks.

Switch the path filter entries from double to single quotes so the file matches the project's YAML formatting convention. The filter patterns themselves are unchanged, so lane selection behaves exactly as before.

Fetch full superproject history for the storage-bypass lane.

The storage lane uses fetch-depth: 1, but historicalFindings runs git merge-base against the base ref before it scans historical sources. A shallow checkout can lack that ref or merge-base commit and fail the lane before the checker reports findings.

Set the storage lane to use full history. Keep curated submodule checkouts able to resolve the base gitlink commits.

Suggested workflow fix
-          fetch-depth: ${{ matrix.group == 'checks' && '0' || '1' }}
+          fetch-depth: ${{ (matrix.group == 'checks' || matrix.group == 'storage') && '0' || '1' }}

Review comment at @scripts/ci/check-storage-bypass.mjs around lines 314 - 323:
Update the storage lane’s workflow checkout configuration so it fetches full
superproject history, allowing historicalFindings to resolve the base ref and
merge-base commit. Preserve the curated submodule checkout behavior needed to
resolve base gitlink commits.

P2 Badge Preserve curated roots across history checks

When a later change drops a root such as tinyagents-session/src/transcript and removes its five extension records, this loop rescans the base gitlink using the current, already-shortened CURATED_VENDOR_ROOTS; validateCoverageDebt permits extension shrinkage, so neither history nor compare retains those writers and the gate passes although the owner code still exists. Compare the curated-root set with the base version, or independently pin every required root, before treating those records as fixed.
