Summary

  • agent_registry_update now refreshes the in-process agent registry, so subagent allowlist overrides reach the spawn_async_subagent enum without a restart.
  • Registry entries are also merged at boot, which covers the restart case from the issue.

Problem

update_agent saved overrides to the config file, but the process-global AgentDefinitionRegistry was built once from the shipped definitions and never updated. The spawn_async_subagent enum is scoped from that registry, so it kept showing the compiled allowlist. Boot had the same gap: it never merged the config entries.

Solution

  • The process registry moved from OnceLock to an RwLock-guarded slot (set_global), so it can be refreshed in place.
  • New apply_registry_entries: overlays each entry's subagents.allowlist onto its harness definition. The harness definition stays the base; only the allowlist is replaced. Ids the harness doesn't know are skipped (custom agents resolve elsewhere).
  • update_agent calls it after saving; bootstrap_core_runtime calls it after init_global.
  • global() now returns Option<Arc<Self>>; the few callers are adapted.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + edge): 3 new tests in host_definition_tests.rs — overlay replaces the allowlist, unknown ids are skipped, apply_registry_entries refreshes the process registry.
  • Diff coverage >= 80%: the new logic is covered by the new tests (CI will confirm the number).
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A — behaviour-only change, no matrix row covers this flow.
  • All affected feature IDs listed: N/A — same reason.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A — no release-cut surfaces touched.
  • Linked issue closed via Closes #6934 in ## Related.

Impact

  • Runtime: the spawn_async_subagent enum and dispatch checks now reflect registry overrides immediately and after restart.
  • No migration, no config format change. The SaaS builtins-only guard is untouched.

Commit & Branch

  • Branch: sx4im:fix/6934-agent-registry-spawn-enum
  • Commit SHA: 0c112b3

Validation Run

  • pnpm --filter openhuman-app format:check — N/A, Rust-only change
  • pnpm typecheck — N/A, Rust-only change
  • Focused tests: 3 new tests in host_definition_tests.rs; cargo check -p openhuman --lib green; cargo check -p openhuman --tests green (full cargo test link was OOM-killed in this small shared VM; CI runs the suite)
  • Rust fmt/check: changed lines format-clean
  • Tauri fmt/check — N/A

Validation Blocked

  • command: cargo test -p openhuman --lib agent::harness::host_definition::
  • error: test-binary link OOM-killed (7 GB VM shared with another agent's build; two runtime restarts)
  • impact: full local test run not completed; new tests compile clean and CI runs them

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: registry overrides of a builtin agent's subagent allowlist take effect immediately and survive restart.
  • User-visible effect: the spawn_async_subagent agent_id enum lists the agents from the updated allowlist.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: with no registry entries, the registry is identical to before.
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: init_global keeps once-semantics; the SaaS builtins-only guard is untouched.

Duplicate / Superseded PR Handling

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configured agent registry entries can override the allowed subagents for matching built-in agents. Entries for unknown agents are ignored.
    • Registry settings are applied during startup and refreshed after agent configuration updates, so changes take effect without restarting.
    • Repeated initialization leaves existing registry settings unchanged, and settings for agents without matching definitions are not applied.
    • Changes to an agent’s configured allowlist are reflected in its available subagents after the registry refresh.

update_agent persisted subagent allowlist overrides to the config file
but never refreshed the process-global AgentDefinitionRegistry, so the
spawn_async_subagent enum and dispatch checks kept serving the compiled
policy until restart. The registry is now re-applied from the config
entries after every update_agent and at boot.

- Replace the OnceLock process registry with an RwLock-guarded slot plus
  set_global, so the registry can be refreshed in place.
- Add apply_registry_entries: overlays each entry's subagents.allowlist
  onto its harness definition (entry wins, harness stays the base).
- Call it from update_agent (no-restart fix) and bootstrap_core_runtime
  (restart fix).
- global() now returns Option<Arc<Self>>; adapt callers.

Test assessment: Test coverage is assessed from changed tests and lane evidence; execution is not claimed without trusted check data.

What changed

`GLOBAL` becomes `RwLock<Option<Arc<AgentDefinitionRegistry>>>`; `init_global` takes the write lock, returns early when already initialised, and logs `registry.len()` directly, while `init_global_builtins` only installs builtins when the slot is empty. `global()` returns `Option<Arc<Self>>`, `global_arc()` delegates to it, and a new `set_global(Arc<Self>)` replaces the registry outright. `with_entry_overlay(&AgentRegistryEntry) -> Option<Self>` copies the harness definition for the entry id and replaces its `subagents` list with the entry's `allowlist` mapped to `SubagentEntry::AgentId`, returning `None` for ids the harness does not know because custom agents resolve through `find_custom_in_config` at session build. `apply_registry_entries(&[AgentRegistryEntry])` now holds the write lock across read, overlay, and store so concurrent updates cannot each start from the same stale registry and overwrite one another; it returns early when the global was never initialised or when no entry matches. `update_agent` calls it after persisting config and `bootstrap_core_runtime` calls it at boot, including on the path where `init_global` failed and the existing warning already states spawn is unavailable until restart. Call sites adapt to the owned handle: the SaaS path and two builder tests use `as_deref()`, and the session-routing test passes `&registry`. `scripts/ci/process-statics.json` registers `GLOBAL` as a category-A process static naming its verification test.

Features

  • Modified — Process registry storage and accessors become mutable: The global definition registry is no longer write-once: `GLOBAL` is an `RwLock<Option<Arc<..>>>`, `global()` yields `Option<Arc<Self>>` instead of a `'static` borrow, and `set_global` allows outright replacement. Readers of the global deref the owned `Arc` at verification and lookup sites. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition.rs#pub struct AgentDefinitionRegistry {, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition.rs#impl AgentDefinitionRegistry {)
  • Added — Per-entry overlay of subagent allowlists: `with_entry_overlay` returns a copy of the registry in which the harness definition for the entry's id keeps its base shape but takes the user-authored `subagents.allowlist`; ids with no harness definition yield `None`, leaving custom agents to the existing `find_custom_in_config` session-build path. The receiver registry is not mutated. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition.rs#impl AgentDefinitionRegistry {)
  • Added — apply_registry_entries refreshes the live process registry: Re-applies user-authored entries so spawn/dispatch reads the updated policy without a restart, holding the write lock across read, overlay, and store so two concurrent updates cannot both start from the same stale registry and overwrite one another. It is a deliberate no-op when the global was never initialised or when no entry matches a harness definition, so it cannot panic on a missing global or advance the registry when nothing was overlaid. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition.rs#impl AgentDefinitionRegistry {)
  • Modified — update_agent refreshes the registry after saving config: After the config save succeeds, the mutation path calls `apply_registry_entries` on the saved entries, so an agent registry update takes effect in the running process rather than only after the next restart; a failed save returns before the refresh. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/registry/ops.rs#pub async fn update_agent()
  • Modified — Boot applies user-authored registry entries: `bootstrap_core_runtime` overlays config `agent_registry.entries` after registry initialisation so overrides are visible from boot; the call is described as idempotent and also runs on the path where `init_global` failed, where the pre-existing warning already states spawn is unavailable until restart. (crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/bootstrap.rs#pub(crate) async fn bootstrap_core_runtime()
  • Internal refactor — Callers adapted to the owned registry handle: `build_with_profile_capabilities` passes `global().as_deref()` into the builtins-only verification guard, preserving the SaaS check that refuses to serve users from a registry holding anything but built-ins; the same `as_deref()` adaptation is applied at builder-test call sites. (crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/saas.rs#pub async fn build_with_profile_capabilities(, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/builder/builder_tests_explicit_definition_tests.rs#async fn registry_built_sessions_resolve_the_registry_definition() {)
  • Added — Process static disclosure for the registry global: `GLOBAL` is registered as a category-A process static with its type, multiplicity, and a stated verification test, disclosing that these definitions are process-wide and serve every tenant while carrying no per-tenant data. (scripts/ci/process-statics.json)

Tests

  • new unit test — Builds builtins-only, asserts the compiled orchestrator allowlist is non-empty, overlays an entry whose allowlist is `["researcher"]`, and asserts the overlay wins (`agent_registry_update of the orchestrator's subagents allowlist does not reach the spawn_async_subagent enum #6934`) while the receiver registry still reports the compiled allowlist.: Directly pins the override-wins semantics and the copy-not-mutate behaviour; no execution or pass result is claimed here. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition_tests.rs)
  • new unit test — Overlays an entry for an id the harness does not define and asserts `with_entry_overlay` returns `None`.: Pins the deliberate skip for custom agents, which the code comments attribute to `find_custom_in_config` resolving them at session build. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition_tests.rs)
  • new unit test — Initialises the global with builtins, captures the previous registry in a `RestoreGlobal` guard whose `Drop` calls `set_global`, applies an orchestrator entry via `apply_registry_entries`, and asserts the process global now reports the entry's allowlist.: Exercises the same `apply_registry_entries` function `update_agent` invokes; the drop guard restores the shared process global even when an assertion panics, which mitigates cross-test interference, and the same test name is cited as the static's verification. It still depends on that global's state. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition_tests.rs)
  • adapted existing test — Session-routing resolution now passes `&registry` to `resolve_definition` because `global()` returns an `Arc`; assertions on exact id, thread-renamed ids, and prefix-only names are unchanged.: Mechanical adaptation of call syntax; the behavioural assertions it guards are unchanged. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/registry/agents/orchestrator/prompt_tests_session_routing_tests.rs#fn a_thread_renamed_session_still_resolves_to_its_registry_entry() {)
  • adapted existing tests — Builder tests that compare a resolved definition's sandbox mode against the registry's orchestrator definition add `as_deref()` between `global()` and `get`, preserving the comparison.: Mechanical adaptation to the owned handle; the compared values and expectations are untouched. (crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/builder/builder_tests_explicit_definition_tests.rs#async fn registry_built_sessions_resolve_the_registry_definition() {, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/builder/builder_tests_explicit_definition_tests.rs#async fn resolved_definition_prefers_the_sessions_own_over_a_same_id_registry_en)

security

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The SaaS builtins-only guard is preserved rather than bypassed: `verify_builtin_definitions` is still called with the process registry, now dereferenced from the `Arc`, so a globally-initialised registry holding more than built-ins is still refused.

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The new tests pin the three behaviours that matter for the fix: the entry allowlist overriding the compiled one, the unknown-id skip, and the process registry being refreshed after `apply_registry_entries`. The refresh test drives the same function that `update_agent` calls, so the tested path is the shipped path.
  • Positive: `apply_registry_entries` returns early when the global was never initialised or when no entry maps to a harness definition, so the boot call placed after a failed `init_global` degrades into the pre-existing "spawn unavailable until restart" warning instead of panicking or masking the error.
  • Positive: The refresh now holds the write lock across read, overlay, and store, which removes the read-modify-write race where concurrent updates could each start from the same registry and lose one another's overlay.
  • Lane summary: Provisional: the diff converts the process-global registry to a rebindable RwLock and adds an entry-overlay refresh path; I need to read `AgentDefinitionRegistry::get`, `with_definitions`, `allowed_subagent_ids`, `builtins_only`, `verify_builtin_definitions`, and `AgentSubagentPolicy::from_allowlist` to confirm the overlay, test guards, and boot merge behave as claimed before deciding whether any behavioural gap (e.g. overlay firing for disabled entries, boot applying overlays when the registry was seeded by a different path, or the global() clone now returning Arc defeating a `'static` borrow) is real or already covered by the new tests. Also checking that `spawn_async_subagent`/dispatch actually read the refreshed registry so the agent_registry_update of the orchestrator's subagents allowlist does not reach the spawn_async_subagent enum #6934 invariant has a failing test behind it, and that `bootstrap.rs`'s call sits inside the branch where `init_global` has run so the no-op-on-uninitialised rule does not silently skip the merge at boot when init_global failed or was skipped by another domain's registry being reused. `saas.rs` and the two call-site files changing from `&'static` to `Option<Arc>` are mechanical; I will confirm `verify_builtin_definitions`'s new signature compiles against `as_deref` on the owned Arc without a borrow issue, since `global()` now returns an owned Arc and `as_deref` on `Option<Arc<T>>` yields `Option<&T>` which should match. Confirming these is the whole of this turn's lookups; findings stay empty until they land, except for anything already provable from the diff alone: nothing is provable yet, so findings remain empty pending the reads below. I am particularly interested in whether `init_global`'s new early-return-before-load means a failed first boot (poisoned config) leaves the registry unset when the old `OnceLock` code path would also have left it unset — that looks behaviour-preserving, so likely no finding there. The `RwLock` write lock held across `overlay_entry`/`with_definitions`/`Arc::new` is a short, non-blocking operation on an in-memory registry, so no deadlock or async-context concern is expected, though I will confirm none of these functions block on I/O under the lock via the `get`/`with_definitions` reads. I will also check whether the new test file compiles under `cfg(test)` path attribution rules the repository mandates, which it appears to satisfy as a sibling `host_definition_tests.rs` declared with `#[path]`, matching the repo rule about sibling test modules. `process-statics.json` registering `GLOBAL` as a category-A static with a stated verification test looks like the required disclosure, not a defect, though I will confirm the named test actually exists and would fail if the invariant regressed, per the review brief's rule about claimed invariants needing a failing test behind them; the diff's own new test `apply_registry_entries_refreshes_the_process_registry` looks like exactly that, so the main open question is the boot-side merge in `bootstrap.rs` and the update-side call in `ops.rs` being reachable through existing integration seams rather than only directly-tested unit seams. If those reads confirm the wiring, I expect zero findings; if they show `update_agent`'s refresh firing before `init_global_builtins` in some process (mobile host, flows-only worker), the no-op-on-uninitialised rule would silently drop the overlay until the next boot, which the boot merge would then paper over — behaviourally fine but worth confirming is intentional rather than a silent gap. Confirming that is the last item below. `update_agent`'s save-then-refresh ordering means a failed save never refreshes, which is correct; the reverse would be a finding but is not what is written. `apply_registry_entries`'s early return when `overlaid.is_empty()` means an entry whose id is not a harness definition (custom agent) alone does not bump the registry version or Arc identity; consumers that compare Arc pointers for change detection could miss an update that only overlaid nothing, but since the overlay is identity-preserving in content when nothing was overlaid, that looks harmless; confirming `global_arc` consumers for pointer-equality change detection is not visible from here, so I will look for that in the reads if it comes up cheaply, else leave it as low-confidence speculation I do not report. Once the reads land I will either file nothing or file the concrete gap I find; either way this turn's summary above stands as provisional and the final verdict comes next turn. `AgentRegistryEntry`'s field set in the test constructor needs to match `types.rs` exactly or the test file will not compile — confirming that struct's fields is the last lookup below, since a mismatch would be a compile-breaking defect visible only through that read. `AgentSubagentPolicy::from_allowlist` similarly needs to exist with that exact name, else `registry_entry_with_allowlist` will not compile, so both type reads are load-bearing for the _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `3956f11ae424`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The process-wide agent definition registry now supports replacement and registry-entry overlays. Configured entries are applied during agent-domain bootstrap and after agent updates. Registry lookups and verification use the updated shared-reference API.

Changes: Agent Registry Allowlist Refresh

Registry storage and overlays
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/harness/host_definition_tests.rs, scripts/ci/process-statics.json
The global registry uses replaceable, lock-protected storage and returns cloned Arc values. Matching registry entries replace a definition’s subagent allowlist. Tests cover matching and unknown IDs, preservation of the original registry, and global registry updates. Process statics metadata describes the global registry.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: sanil-23

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3f97e

Changing an orchestrator's sub-agent allowlist now takes effect without a restart, but two gaps remain. Removing an override leaves the old allowlist active in the running process. Custom sub-agents added to an allowlist are still rejected when delegated to. Both should be addressed before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3f97e

Delegation settings now affect running authorization state. Removing an override does not restore the default policy in the running process, and overlapping updates can leave effective permissions inconsistent with saved settings. Existing admission checks remain in place.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Removing a persisted override leaves its delegation policy installed in the running process. remove_agent only saves the reduced configuration, while later overlay application starts from the already-overlaid registry and does not reset missing entries. A previously expanded allowlist can therefore survive removal and reach newly constructed sessions even though registry listing falls back to the default entry. Repeated bootstrap in the same process does not restore the base policy.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Saving configuration and publishing effective delegation policy are separate ordering domains. Concurrent updates load independent configuration snapshots, save them asynchronously, and then publish their complete entry vectors. Publication can occur in a different order from durable writes, allowing an older, broader snapshot to replace a newer restriction in memory. The new write lock protects overlay computation but does not establish consistency with the last persisted policy.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A configured allowlist change can affect subsequent sessions and dependent lookups throughout the process where no context-specific registry overrides it. The evidence does not establish an unauthenticated mutation path, cross-tenant exploit, credential exposure, or sandbox escape.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported security failure path is stale authorization rather than bypass of the admission check: an expanded overlay can remain installed after its removal, or an older snapshot can be published after a newer restriction. A subsequent parent built from that policy can pass the unchanged allowlist gate for a known target that the restored or newer policy would deny.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Configuration loading is context-aware and fails closed without a bound SaaS context, but apply_registry_entries writes an unkeyed process-global registry. Identifier validation and downstream target checks constrain input shape and dispatch identity; they do not establish which callers may change shared policy. Tenant-surface authorization remains unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Active parents derive allowed_subagent_ids from their resolved session definition and preserve that authority in the turn snapshot. Global replacement therefore does not provide immediate revocation for sessions holding explicit definitions. This snapshot behavior predates the PR; its compatibility with newly mutable policy requires an explicit lifecycle contract.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Reconcile effective policy from an immutable base and the complete current configuration, including removals. Order durable writes and publication using a shared transaction or policy generation, and define whether restrictive updates apply only to new sessions or also revoke existing session authority.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 85.71% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 21 functions across 7 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #6934 requires the spawn_async_subagent scoped spec to reflect the updated allowlist and requires a regression test at that boundary. The implementation refreshes the process registry after update_agent and during bootstrap. The new tests verify the definition overlay and process-registry replacement, but they do not build or inspect scope_spawn_async_subagent_spec, its agent_id enum, or dispatch acceptance. The PR also provides no diff-coverage result, and the focused test command was not completed.

Resolution

Add a regression test that applies an orchestrator override, builds or scopes the spawn_async_subagent spec, and asserts that the custom ID is in the agent_id enum. Exercise dispatch acceptance for that ID when the registered custom-agent path is available. Provide CI evidence that diff coverage is at least 80%.

The global-state test is not isolated and can race with other tests.

This test mutates the process-wide registry. It restores the previous value only at the end of the test. If an assertion panics first, the overlaid registry stays in place for the rest of the binary. Other tests run in parallel and can read the overlaid orchestrator allowlist while this test runs. builder_tests_explicit_definition_tests.rs and prompt_tests_session_routing_tests.rs also read the global registry.

Restore the registry with a drop guard. Consider a shared test mutex for tests that replace the global registry.

Proposed fix
+    struct Restore(Option<std::sync::Arc<AgentDefinitionRegistry>>);
+    impl Drop for Restore {
+        fn drop(&mut self) {
+            if let Some(prev) = self.0.take() {
+                AgentDefinitionRegistry::set_global(prev);
+            }
+        }
+    }
     AgentDefinitionRegistry::init_global_builtins().expect("init");
-    let before = AgentDefinitionRegistry::global().expect("initialised");
+    let _restore = Restore(AgentDefinitionRegistry::global());

Remove the final set_global(before) call.

Based on learnings: unit tests should not depend on shared mutable global state without proper isolation or reset.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Concurrent registry updates can lose an overlay.

apply_registry_entries reads the registry with global(), builds a new registry, and then writes it with set_global. The read and the write are separate lock acquisitions. Two concurrent callers can both read the same base registry. The second write then discards the first overlay. update_agent and bootstrap_core_runtime can both call this function.

Each caller passes the full entry list, so the last writer usually wins with complete data. A concurrent update_agent that was loaded from a stale config can still overwrite a newer one.

Hold the write lock across the read-modify-write sequence:

Resolve custom agents in the async dispatch path.

When the orchestrator allowlist contains an enabled custom agent, the update and bootstrap paths preserve that ID in the orchestrator definition and advertise it through spawn_async_subagent. The async executor resolves the target only with AgentDefinitionRegistry::current().get(&agent_id). Because custom IDs are skipped from that registry, the executor returns unknown agent_id before checking the parent allowlist.

Add the required scoped-spec regression test.

Issue #6934 requires a test that updates the registry without restarting, builds a scoped session, and verifies the changed spawn_async_subagent allowlist. The current tests call registry helpers directly and inspect registry definitions only. They do not exercise update_agent or SessionHostBuilder::build, so removing the production refresh call would not fail them. Add this integration-path test to prevent regressions in the required behavior.

Rebuild overlays when an entry disappears.

If apply_registry_entries first applies an orchestrator override and later receives [], overlaid.is_empty() leaves the old allowlist in the process registry. Reapplying the configured entries therefore cannot restore the harness policy after an override is removed. Build each refresh from the unmodified harness definitions, then apply the current entry list, including an empty list. (github.com)

Resolve custom agent IDs in spawn_async_subagent.

spawn_async_subagent can add a custom ID to the parent's allowlist but then reject it. Resolve the configured custom entry at this lookup and convert it to a runnable definition, or add custom definitions to the registry used by dispatch before the allowlist check.

Update the lookup used by spawn_async_subagent so custom IDs allowed by the
parent resolve to runnable definitions instead of being rejected; in
overlay_entry, resolve the configured custom entry and convert it to an
AgentDefinition, or ensure custom definitions are registered before dispatch
performs the allowlist check.
