feat: port generic turn/harness pieces from OpenHuman core (#435) - #438
Conversation
Introduce a wind down middleware that signals the agent to wrap up as the context window fills, so long-running sessions end cleanly instead of being cut off mid-task. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a wind down middleware that signals the agent to wrap up as the context window fills, so long-running sessions end cleanly instead of being cut off mid-task. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Generic wind-down pause and hard-stop wall-clock clamp ported from the OpenHuman deadline_wind_down middleware (openhuman#7594). The host-specific session sidecar write becomes an on-pause callback. Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a context ladder middleware that progressively trims conversation history as the context window fills, along with lifecycle hooks for observing middleware execution. Also add a payload summarizer that condenses oversized tool payloads before they reach the model. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The context ladder now routes oversized tool payloads through the payload summarizer so that large results are condensed before they consume the context budget. Tests cover the summarizer and the ladder's interaction with it. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted imports and tracing macro calls to satisfy rustfmt, and updated the payload summarizer tests to assert on run_id and the derived model/tool call bounds instead of the removed config name. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a middleware that normalizes and validates the shape of model responses before they reach downstream consumers. This keeps callers from having to defensively handle malformed or unexpected response structures. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a turn policy that decides how responses are shaped during a turn, along with middleware library wiring and tests covering the new behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce types for representing the result of a turn and errors that can occur while running one, along with tests covering their behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted several long expressions and assertions across the harness tests and turn policy so they fit within the configured line width. No behaviour changed. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…olicy Silence the clippy lint on run_policy, which builds a default RunPolicy and then reassigns fields from the caller's overrides. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Flatten the nested if in the response shape middleware into a single let-chain, matching the style used elsewhere in the crate. Behaviour is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Expose new event utilities for deduplicating calls, pausing on caps, and sending events in order, re-exporting them from the events module so consumers can use them directly. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reworked the policy evaluation logic to reduce branching and make the decision path easier to follow. Behaviour is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests asserting that retry attempts inherit the first attempt's host extensions when the retry factory does not set its own, and that host extensions supplied by the retry factory take precedence over the inherited ones. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…ation and multi-dir loading Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a hooks module exposing RunHooks, resolve_concurrency and run_with_hooks so callers can observe and steer parallel runs, and re-export them from the parallel module. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The Either enum carried a worker index alongside each variant, but every consumer already had the index in scope, so the field was dead weight. Removing it simplifies the hook dispatch path without changing behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

merged result before mutating the existing set. Commit the staged definitions
only after validation succeeds, leaving the set unchanged when validation
returns an error.
Review comments at @crates/tinyagents-harness/src/events/cap_pauser.rs:
- Line 54: Update the cap initialization in the cap pauser constructor to reject
a zero cap, or ensure the pauser sends Pause before the first model dispatch
when the cap is zero. Preserve the existing behavior for positive caps.
- Line 99: Update CapPauser::with_recorder to reject SteeringHandle
configurations whose policy disallows Pause, or make the pause path return an
explicit failure when the command is rejected; do not rely solely on
SteeringHandle::send queuing the command.
Review comments at @crates/tinyagents-harness/src/events/ordered_sender.rs:
- Around line 62-64: Update the overflow queue admission in the ordered sender’s
send path so `ov.queue` cannot grow without bound while draining waits on
`tx.send(next)`. Enforce a bounded admission or backpressure contract before
`push_back`, and make the send operation follow that contract rather than
relying on the channel’s capacity alone.
- Around line 69-74: Update the no-runtime branch in the ordered sender’s send
path to report delivery failure through its existing error or result contract
instead of dropping the item; alternatively, forward the item through a
mechanism that works without a Tokio runtime. Ensure a synchronous listener
receives an explicit failure or the event when the receiver remains open.
Review comments at
@crates/tinyagents-harness/src/middleware/library/response_shape.rs:
- Around line 226-236: Update ResponseShapeMiddleware::after_model and the agent
run loop so a missing required tool call enters the existing bounded retry path
instead of being returned through the direct after_model error propagation.
Ensure the retry remains subject to the existing retry limit; changing only the
error variant is insufficient.
Review comments at @crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_outcome.rs:
- Line 82: Update take_halt_summary to recover a poisoned lock with
PoisonError::into_inner before taking the halt summary, matching the recovery
behavior in drain_tool_outcomes instead of discarding the summary.
- Line 22: Update ended_out_of_output_budget to recognize the provider
length-stop spellings “length”, “max_tokens”, and “MAX_TOKENS”, reusing a shared
length-stop helper if one exists. Add a test case for “max_tokens” in
turn_outcome_tests.rs and preserve the existing behavior for other finish
reasons.
Review comments at @crates/tinyagents-orchestration/src/parallel/hooks.rs:
- Around line 73-75: Move `on_finish` invocation from the post-`run_indexed`
batch loop into each worker’s future, immediately after that worker’s result is
available. Update `run_indexed` to accept and invoke a completion callback, and
wire it to `hooks.on_finish` in the caller so completed workers emit events
promptly, including when another worker causes the overall run to fail.

Introduce a DefinitionSet type that holds and looks up agent definitions by name. This gives callers a single place to register definitions and resolve them without threading individual definitions through the call stack. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests for definition set loading and turn outcome handling to verify the expected behaviour of these components. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Lifecycle hook middleware now propagates the original turn run error instead of replacing it, so callers see the underlying failure rather than a generic hook error. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a CapPauser that pauses event processing when a cap is reached, along with tests covering the new behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce an ordered sender that preserves event ordering when dispatching to multiple consumers, along with tests covering the sequencing guarantees. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The events module was no longer referenced anywhere in the harness, so it has been dropped to keep the crate tidy. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The response shape middleware, its scope and report types, and the strict output validator now live in a `response_shape` module directory instead of a single file, with the tests moved alongside. The public API is unchanged; this is groundwork for further splitting. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a test asserting that a configured validator keeps the caller's permissive response format when the shape requests a JSON object, and that the validator remains installed on the scope. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Add a response shape middleware that normalises model responses and a wind down middleware that eases the agent toward stopping. Parallel orchestration hooks were extended to support the new middleware stages. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The lifecycle hooks module was broken up into separate files for the memory pack, packed tool route, budget parity, and shared types, with the tests moved alongside. The single file had grown to hold three unrelated middlewares and their host traits, so splitting them keeps each concern readable without changing any behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…e imports Move the lifecycle hook test module into the lifecycle_hooks directory and add a case asserting that wind-down installation is skipped when the steering handle cannot pause. The unused ModelRequest import was dropped from the packed tool route and the test-only imports were adjusted to match. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reworked the skip test to build the harness through the public constructor and call install with its current argument order, then added a case asserting the middleware is installed when the handle allows pausing. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Extend the parallel hooks test to record which workers get a branch context built and assert that a denied worker is never built, matching the existing started-hook expectation. Also sort the finished-hook comparison so it no longer depends on completion order, and tidy import ordering and formatting in the harness middleware tests. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Preserve routed arguments for host authorization
In hosted runs, admit_tool_call snapshots model_arguments before before_tool runs, so this rewrite changes the call name to the router and builds {skill, tool, args} only after that snapshot. The later ToolCallRequest therefore gives SecurityGate::authorize_tool the router name paired with the original inner arguments, even though that API promises the arguments the router will receive; gates that authorize by skill or tool can consequently deny valid calls or approve the wrong target, and deferred approval records have the same mismatched shape. Move routing before the authorization snapshot or refresh the preserved request after routing, and cover the hosted gate/deferred path.

Noted, arrived after merge. The rewrite behaviour is ported unchanged from core; fixing the snapshot ordering needs the host admission seam, so it is tracked for the OpenHuman adoption slice (openhuman#7598) rather than this port.

Sort directory definitions before layering
When a directory contains more than one TOML definition, load_dir_with_validation returns entries in the filesystem's unsorted read_dir order and this loop inserts them as-is. Consequently DefinitionSet::list() can change order between machines, and if two files define the same id, which file wins can also vary; sort loaded by its stamped source path before inserting so directory layering is deterministic.

Noted, arrived after merge: sorting loaded definitions by source path is a small deterministic-order follow-up, tracked for the next tinyagents-definition change.

Split turn policy into its required module layout
This new feature remains a 259-line standalone module containing public option types, policy constants, parsing helpers, and policy construction together. Repository guidance requires new feature areas to use module directories and place their type definitions in types.rs; move this surface under turn_policy/, keep TurnPolicyOverrides and TurnPolicyOptions in types.rs, and leave mod.rs focused on wiring and exports.

Declare hook tests from the hooks module
hooks_tests.rs tests the new hooks module but is declared as a child of parallel::mod, rather than from the bottom of hooks.rs. This bypasses the required sibling module-test layout and prevents these tests from naturally exercising hook-private items; move this declaration into hooks.rs and keep the test file as that module's sibling.

The doc comment on PackedToolRouter referenced PackedToolRouteMiddleware without a path, which rustdoc cannot resolve from this module. The link now uses an explicit super:: path so the generated documentation resolves it. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
