The code node contract's example read an undefined `item`, so builders wrote scripts that failed every real run, and the sandbox's code stub let them dry-run clean. State the runtime contract (a function body receiving `input`, the items array; the return value is one output item's json) in the catalog and builder prompt, report every code node as not executed in the dry-run report, and fail it when a source reads an unbound `item`. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fix false positives for item parameters after a typed or defaulted parameter.
The walk-back loop at Lines 66-71 steps back over only one word , pair at a time. A preceding parameter with a type annotation or a default value stops the loop on a : or = token, so opener never reaches the ( of the parameter list. The forward checks also do not match, so binds returns false. The parameter then counts as a read.
Working sources that the check flags:
- Python:
def pick(x: int, item: dict):\n return item['json']\nreturn pick(0, input[0]) - Python:
def pick(x=0, item=None):is safe only becauseitem=matches the forward=check.def pick(x: int, item):is flagged. - JavaScript:
function pick(a = 0, item) { return item.json; }
Each of these sources defines item correctly. reads_undefined_item still returns true, and AuthoringReport::is_failing then fails the dry run. The report tells the builder that every real run fails with NameError/ReferenceError. The module doc says the check "misses some bugs rather than flagging working code", and this behavior breaks that guarantee.
Fix: if the item token directly follows ( or ,, find the enclosing unmatched ( with depth tracking. Then check for function/catch/def before that (. The ( or , condition keeps def f(x=item) classified as a read, which a_free_item_read_is_flagged expects.

Summary
Refs tinyhumansai/openhuman#7830. A builder-generated
codenode failed every real run withReferenceError: item is not defined, while each dry run of the flow reported clean. Two causes, both fixed here:codecontract taught the wrong variable. The catalog example wasreturn { total: item.a + item.b };, and the description never stated the runtime contract. The host runssourceas the body of a function that receives one variable,input: the node's input items array, each item{ json, binary?, paired_item? }.CodeNodeserializesctx.inputand wraps the return value as thejsonof one output item. The contract (catalog and itstinyflows-buscopy) and the builder prompt now say exactly that, with aninputexample. They also note that a returned array becomes one item, not one per element.codenodes (MockCodereturns{ result: <input> }), so a script that crashes still dry-runs clean. The report now says so, without executing anything:unexecuted_code_nodes: one entry percodenode (node_id,message), on both theok: trueandok: falseshapes. When any exist, thenote/messagestarts with aCODE NOT EXECUTED: N code node(s) (ids) were stubbed, not run …line. This is advisory, sookis unchanged.code_source_errors: a static check that fails the dry run (ok: false) when acodesource readsitemwithout binding it. It scans tokens after blanking comments and strings.const item,item =>,(item, i) =>,function (item),def f(item),for item in,lambda item:and assignment all count as bindings, and any binding clears the source. It errs toward missing a bug rather than flagging working code.API Or Behavior Changes

The wire shape ofNodeKindContractis unchanged.Host divergence, not changed here:
caps::host::ProcessCodeRunner(the opt-inhost-capsrunner, which no host in this repo uses) has a different calling convention. It runssourceas a whole script that reads JSON on stdin or fromargv[1]and prints its result. The documented function-body/input/returncontract is the one the builder's host (OpenHuman's CodeRunner) implements. A host onProcessCodeRunnerwould need its own wording, or that runner aligned.Tests
