Scope purge now removes records and physical blobs across native file storage, composite records/blob storage, and version-aware S3 storage. Durable operation receipts and generation fences make interrupted purges resumable while preserving replacement generations and sibling scopes. Composite storage advertises this capability only when both components provide the required binding and generation validation; S3 deletes object versions and delete markers before reporting completion. Purge is staged rather than atomic, and hosts remain responsible for quiescence and late-writer/orphan cleanup.

Restricted document stores can use a predeclared composite scope-map collection: only Unsupported(ExistingSchema) falls back to validating that declaration, while other failures propagate. Trusted bootstrap requirements are documented. Purge sweeps expired physical blobs, and the shared S3 HTTP client bounds connection establishment to three seconds and each request to ten seconds.

Validation at e9b95abe41e0d37eff9f3401f4f326c378ae9937: all ten hosted CI jobs pass, including 459 core tests, versioned S3 protocol tests, native OS secret-file tests, MongoDB, live S3/MinIO, MSRV, docs, supply-chain checks, strict Clippy, and at least 90% coverage per file. Local validation passes 11 focused composite-blob tests, all ten S3 version protocol tests, workspace all-features check, and workspace all-target/all-feature Clippy with warnings denied.

Regression evidence: test-only 59e6596 failed three assertions for expired physical bytes and restricted schema declarations; 1d7c364 passed all 459 core tests and exposed the stalled S3 listing timeout (nine protocol tests passed, one failed). The final head passes those regressions, including the bounded real loopback request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added scope purging with generation-based isolation across supported storage backends. Handles from before a purge are rejected, while retries return the original purge receipt.
    • Composite storage now coordinates purges across records and blobs, and reports purge capability only when its backends meet the required support.
    • S3 purging removes object versions and delete markers; scope listings include scopes stored in legacy and generation-specific locations.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified purge behavior, backend requirements, and limitations, including that coordinated purges are not atomic across storage backends.

📝 Walkthrough

Storage backends now support scope-generation validation and purge operations. Composite storage coordinates staged purges across record and blob backends. File and S3 storage add generation-aware blob handling, while memory, SQLite, and MongoDB expose purge validation support.

Changes: Scope Purge and Generation Isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Purge contracts and generation-isolated blobs
crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/{composite.rs,mod.rs,purge/*,composite/backend_blobs.rs,backend_blobs_tests.rs}
Core interfaces add purge validation and generation-bound blob operations. BackendBlobs maps nonzero generations to reserved physical scopes and validates mapping data before access, purge, and enumeration.
Composite purge coordination
crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/composite.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/composite/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/composite_*tests.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/composite_tests.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/backend/purge/README.md, docs/specs/*
Composite storage stages blob and record purges through a coordinator and records receipts and history. It blocks operations while a purge is pending, filters reserved scopes, and reports purge and enumeration capabilities based on backend support.
Native backend generation validation
crates/tinystoragedrivers-file/src/{storage,blobs,documents,streams}/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-file/tests/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/{memory,conformance}/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-sqlite/src/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-mongodb/src/*
File storage persists purge state and rejects operations from pending or stale generations. Memory, SQLite, and MongoDB add generation and binding validation. Tests cover receipt replay, revoked handles, and validation behavior.
S3 generation-aware purge and enumeration
crates/tinystoragedrivers-s3/{Cargo.toml,README.md}, crates/tinystoragedrivers-s3/src/blobs/*, crates/tinystoragedrivers-s3/tests/*
S3 storage assigns generation-specific prefixes and enumerates scopes across its storage roots. Signed, paginated version requests delete object versions and delete markers. Tests cover pagination, errors, generation isolation, and MinIO behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e9b95

Scope purge now sweeps expired blobs before deleting, so lapsed expiring blobs no longer survive a purge reported as complete. The previously flagged concern is resolved and no concrete merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed changes.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ec494

The new purge workflow has useful generation and retry protections, but can report completion while expired blob data remains stored. That weakens the deletion guarantee for applications relying on scope resets.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The newly enabled composite purge can report Complete without erasing expired blobs in an independent Memory or SQLite blob backend. BackendBlobs deletes only entries returned by list(""), while those implementations exclude expired entries without necessarily reclaiming their storage. The coordinator then advances to records deletion and persists completion. Generation isolation prevents ordinary replacement handles from reading the retired namespace, but does not satisfy physical erasure. Expiry retention predates this PR; treating that live-only enumeration as completed purge is the introduced contract failure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified retention problem concerns expired data in the addressed independent blob store, including retired physical generations. It does not establish cross-tenant API access or privilege escalation; ordinary composite access remains subject to generation rejection.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Data written with a lifetime can expire before an authorized, fully quiescent purge. Live-only enumeration then omits it, allowing completion while its storage remains. Native SQLite purge deletes its own scoped rows, but that does not erase rows in a separate blob backend. A separate expiry sweep can reclaim them; no concurrent writer is required for this failure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — S3 callers construct scope-specific legacy and generation prefixes. The version-deletion loop rejects returned keys outside the requested prefix, deletes explicit version identities, and propagates listing or deletion failures instead of reporting successful completion. Required version-list and version-delete authority belongs to the configured signer.
  • observed — Concrete Memory, SQLite, and File purge binding validators check native generation admission as well as any attached fence. These checks support the coordinator's rejection of stale handles before starting a new operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Coordinator conditional writes govern ownership across reopened instances, while an instance-shared mutex serializes local runners. A different operation is rejected while pending, and completed receipt replay avoids repeating destructive stages after recovery.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make blob-stage completion depend on expiry-independent erasure. A dedicated physical deletion operation is preferable; sweeping before enumeration is sufficient only where the backend guarantees that all expired storage is reclaimed. Preserve the rule that this operation must not erase independently owned records.

346-358: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Do not run coordinator schema validation on every data-port operation.

pending() runs before every composite document, stream and blob operation. PendingDocuments, PendingStreams and GenerationBlobs::admit all call it. Each call runs validate_coordinator_schema (ensure_collection) and then a coordinator get. Under ExistingSchema, ensure_collection fails first, so each call also runs validate_collection_spec.

The result: one tenant get costs 2–3 extra coordinator round trips. A composite blob read also runs validate_purge_generation. On a nonzero BackendBlobs generation it also reads the mapping. On SQLite or MongoDB, ensure_collection can also take a schema-metadata write path on the read hot path.

The coordinator declaration does not change during the handle's lifetime. Validate it once per coordinator handle, for example with a tokio::sync::OnceCell<()> shared through CompositeStorage. After that, keep only the receipt get in pending().

I am retaining per-admission schema validation rather than caching it in OnceCell. Revalidation detects a collection declaration that is later removed or made incompatible and preserves the fail-closed admission check. There is no measured cost here that justifies weakening that check. The schema fallback and expiry/timeout findings are fixed and verified in the current head.

@coderabbitai review

The schema-declaration, expired-blob cleanup, and S3 timeout findings are fixed. All ten CI jobs and the focused local tests, workspace check, and strict all-target/all-feature Clippy pass at e9b95ab. Replies explain each fix and the retained per-admission schema validation.
