release: v0.6.0 — first publish since February, lockstep bump + changelog - #362
Conversation
…gelog First release since 0.5.4 (2026-02-27): 332 commits, 101 feat, 123 fix, no breaking markers. Minor rather than patch because the range carries features. All six lockstep packages move together — cli, agent, and the four platform binaries — and cli's optionalDependencies pins move with them. They are exact pins, so a partial bump would ship a 0.6.0 cli that installs 0.5.4 binaries. main was already in that partial state: cli and agent at 0.5.5, the platform packages left at 0.5.4. Adds CHANGELOG.md. The fragment convention was adopted partway through this range, so the detailed entries cover recent work and the highlights section names what else is in it, with the full compare link.

REQUEST CHANGES — the release is mechanically sound; one launch path in the shipped range breaks the invariant the release notes assert
I read the diff at b083e97c against main (fd0dbcb) — 12 files, all version bumps + CHANGELOG; the six-package lockstep set is correct and the optionalDependencies pins match. The version claim is accurate: git log v0.5.4..b083e97c = 333 commits, 101 feat, 123 fix, and I found zero !: subjects / BREAKING markers, so the minor bump is right and the "no breaking changes" line is true.
The blocker is not in this diff — it is a path in the range this release publishes that contradicts the invariant this PR's notes assert.
BLOCKER — tps agent start --runtime <claude-code|codex|gemini> never goes through nono or the attested launch
packages/cli/bin/tps.ts:460 branches before the attested-launch path:
} else if (action === "start") {
const runtimeArg = process.argv.includes("--runtime") ? process.argv[process.argv.indexOf("--runtime") + 1] : undefined;
if (runtimeArg === "claude-code" || runtimeArg === "codex" || runtimeArg === "gemini") {
// Claude Code CLI runtime — OAuth, no TPS proxy neededThat branch ends by calling the runtime directly and never calls runAgent({action:"start"}) — the only caller of launchAttested() (the sole nono launch point for agent start). It spawns the runtime unconfined:
packages/cli/src/utils/claude-code-runtime.ts:200—const proc = spawn("claude", args, { cwd: config.workspace, env: { ...process.env } });packages/cli/src/utils/codex-runtime.ts:221—"--sandbox", sandboxMode— that is Codex's own workspace-write mode, not nono.packages/cli/src/utils/gemini-runtime.ts:163—const proc = spawn("gemini", args, { cwd: config.workspace, stdio: ["pipe","pipe","pipe"], env: geminiEnv });— and the args carry-y(auto-approve).
The launch gate cannot see this: rule 2 only recognises agent start via launchesAgent():
// packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:662
if (command === "agent") return sub === "start";so a non-TTY tps agent start --id X --sandbox-required --runtime claude-code passes the gate, then takes the unconfined branch. Meanwhile the release notes state a universal invariant — CHANGELOG.md line 3 (cli#341 series … "agents now launch under nono, fail-closed") and packages/cli/src/utils/launch-attestation.ts:5 (every launch through \tps agent start` runs its workload inside a nono session …`). For this entrypoint both statements are false as shipped.
This is a real remaining unsandboxed launch path (the one Flint asked me to rule out). It is reachable from a generated unit or any wrapper that passes --runtime; it is not a signal-handler or restart-loop case.
Required before merge: either (a) route these three runtimes through launchAttested() like the default path — including carrying --sandboxed/--sandbox-required into the re-exec — or (b) if the exemption is intended, state it explicitly and precisely in the notes (name the flag, the three runtimes, and that they are not sandbox-attested), so the invariant is "every launch except --runtime <…>" and no reader is misled. I lean (a); the profile and the launcher already exist for it.
SHOULD FIX — release notes still name @tpsdev-ai/agent 0.5.5
CHANGELOG.md:66 — "merge → the release publishes @tpsdev-ai/agent 0.5.5 (with check) → …" and CHANGELOG.md:67 — "@tpsdev-ai/agent 0.5.5 (Refs #341 #352)." The PR bumps packages/agent/package.json "version": "0.6.0", and release.yml publishes @tpsdev-ai/agent at the tag version. Those two lines (and their heading) should read 0.6.0; otherwise the notes and the artifact disagree. (CodeRabbit's inline comment says the same.)
NIT — lockfile workspace versions were not regenerated
bun.lock still records "packages/agent" … "version": "0.5.5" and the cli workspace optionalDependencies pins as 0.5.4:
"packages/agent": { "name": "@tpsdev-ai/agent", "version": "0.5.5", … }
"optionalDependencies": {
"@tpsdev-ai/cli-darwin-arm64": "0.5.4",
Not a merge blocker — bun install --frozen-lockfile on this tree returns exit 0 ("Checked 117 installs across 123 packages (no changes)"), and every CI build uses sfw bun install --frozen-lockfile, so the stale entries are inert. But the lockfile is now out of step with the six manifests it describes. Regenerate it with a plain bun install and commit, so the version bump is internally consistent.
Verified (evidence, not assertion)
- Release range:
333commits,101feat,123fix, no!:→ minor bump correct;HEADis one commit on top ofmain(fd0dbcb) and the diff is exactly the 12 files listed. - Lockstep: all six packages are
0.6.0;packages/clioptionalDependenciesare the four0.6.0exact pins.bun install --frozen-lockfileexit 0. - The default
agent startpath is correctly fail-closed and attested:agent.ts:838refuses when no nono is at the pinned path, and the non-nono re-exec path islaunchAttested("tps-agent-run", …)(agent.ts:877). - The gate runs before any command dispatch —
packages/cli/bin/tps.ts:254await enforceLaunchControlOrExit();— and the published launcher reaches it:packages/cli/bin/tps.cjsfalls back todist/bin/tps.js, so the sandbox control is what an installedtpsexecutes. - Docker supervisor (S2) is fail-closed on nono-engage failure at the launch site (
docker/tps-office-supervisor.sh:411refusal +shutdown_children TERM, no UID-only fallback). - The alternate-runtime branch is not introduced by this diff (it predates it), so this is a gap in the range's invariant, not a regression in the bump itself.
Please respin with the notes corrected; the version bump itself I'm happy with.
…the lockfile Addresses the two non-blocking findings from the security review, plus the claim that was the real defect in my release notes. CHANGELOG said 'agents now launch under nono, fail-closed' without qualification. That is not true: tps agent start --runtime claude-code|codex|gemini branches before the attested launch and spawns the runtime directly. launchAttested has exactly one caller (agent.ts:877) and that branch never reaches it. Verified, not taken on report. The notes now state the scope precisely, including that v0.5.4 shipped no sandbox at all — so this release is a strict improvement even with the gap, and readers should not treat the detailed entries as covering those three runtimes. Also: two CHANGELOG references to @tpsdev-ai/agent 0.5.5 came from fragment text I copied verbatim without checking for version strings; they now read 0.6.0. And bun.lock still recorded agent 0.5.5 and the optionalDependency pins at 0.5.4 because I bumped the manifests without regenerating it — it now records 0.6.0 throughout. The blocking finding (the --runtime branch passing --sandbox-required and then running unconfined) is not addressed here; it is with Nathan.
Completes the 'state the exemption explicitly' half of the security review's
either/or, which the changelog scoping commit only did for the release notes.
launch-attestation.ts:5 claimed the invariant covers 'every launch through
tps agent start'. It does not: the --runtime claude-code|codex|gemini branch
in bin/tps.ts never reaches runAgent, so never reaches launchAttested, whose
only caller is agent.ts:877. The header now says 'every launch that reaches
runAgent({action:"start"})' and carries the exemption, including the part
that matters most — launchesAgent() returns true for 'agent start', so
--sandbox-required passes the gate and the process then runs unconfined.
A flag that asserts a guarantee it cannot honour is worse than no flag. That
is filed as cli#363 with both the routing fix and the interim refusal, and
both the header and the changelog now point at it rather than saying
'tracked separately' with nothing behind it.

APPROVE — blocker resolved; the claim now matches the coverage, and the residual is tracked
Re-reviewed at 2cd95b6 (was b083e97 when I requested changes). The delta is three files, all in scope, and it addresses every point I raised. CI is green on this head (18 checks: Build, Lint, Unit & Integration, Dependency Audit, Binary Smoke, both nono profile gates, Docker Integration, Semgrep, CodeQL, Socket).
Blocker — resolved by option (b), stated precisely
My requested fix was "(a) route the three runtimes through launchAttested(), or (b) state the exemption explicitly and precisely". You took (b) and did it in both places I named:
-
CHANGELOG.mdhighlights now scope the claim, replacing the unqualified "agents now launch under nono, fail-closed" with a named, honest boundary:Scope, stated precisely.
0.5.4shipped no sandbox at all, so this is a strict improvement — but it is not yet universal.tps agent start --runtime claude-code|codex|geminibranches before the attested launch and spawns the runtime directly, so those three paths are not confined by nono. Do not read the entries below as covering them. Routing those runtimes through the attested launch is tracked in cli#363, which also covers making--sandbox-requiredrefuse on that branch rather than silently passing. -
packages/cli/src/utils/launch-attestation.tsheader no longer overstates its own reach — the invariant is narrowed to the path that actually holds ("every launch that reachesrunAgent({action:"start"})"), and the exemption is explicit at the point of the claim, including the flag's false assurance and the follow-up:KNOWN EXEMPTION …
tps agent start --runtime claude-code|codex|geminibranches inbin/tps.tsBEFORE reachingrunAgent, and spawns the runtime directly — so it never arrives here and is NOT confined by nono. Worse,launchesAgent()(nono.ts) returns true foragent start, so--sandbox-requiredpasses the launch gate and the process then runs unconfined: the flag currently gives assurance it cannot deliver on that path.
This is the correct minimum for a release: the gap is real but unchanged in kind from 0.5.4 (which shipped no sandbox at all), while the claim was the actual defect. A universal claim over partial coverage is worse than the gap itself; it now reads accurately. I confirmed the change is comment-only — git diff b083e97 2cd95b6 -- packages/cli/src/utils/launch-attestation.ts has no non-comment lines — so no behavior moved under a documentation edit.
Both secondary findings fixed
- Version refs — the two
@tpsdev-ai/agent0.5.5 references (the ordering line and the heading) now read 0.6.0, matchingpackages/agent/package.jsonand the tag the release publishes.grep -c '0\.5\.5' CHANGELOG.md→0. - Lockfile —
bun.lockis regenerated:"packages/agent" … "version": "0.6.0", the cli workspace0.6.0, and the fouroptionalDependenciespins0.6.0(was agent0.5.5/ pins0.5.4). No package added or removed — version lines only.bun install --frozen-lockfilestill returns exit 0 ("Checked 117 installs across 123 packages (no changes)"), so the regenerated lockfile is consistent with the manifests and every CI lane that installs frozen.
Re-verified on this head
- Lockstep set: all six packages
0.6.0;packages/clioptionalDependenciesfour0.6.0exact pins. No0.5.xleft in any manifest or inbun.lock. - Release range unchanged: 333 commits / 101
feat/ 123fix, no!:subjects or BREAKING bodies → minor bump correct; head is 3 commits on top ofmain(fd0dbcb). - "Any remaining path that starts an agent without nono": I traced the spawn sites.
runAgent→launchAttestedis the sole nono launch point (agent.ts:877), the defaultagent startpath is fail-closed when no pinned nono exists (agent.ts:838), the Docker supervisor fails closed at the launch site with no UID-only fallback (tps-office-supervisor.sh:411+shutdown_children TERM), and the published launcher reaches the gate (bin/tps.cjsfalls back todist/bin/tps.js;bin/tps.ts:254await enforceLaunchControlOrExit()runs before dispatch). The one remaining unconfined path is the--runtimebranch named above — now correctly documented, tracked in cli#363, and not claimed otherwise.
Residual (non-blocking, tracked)
--sandbox-required still passes the gate on the --runtime branch and then runs unconfined — documented, but live. cli#363 covers both routing the runtimes through launchAttested() and making that branch refuse when the flag is set. I'd want #363 landed before anything relies on --runtime under a non-TTY supervisor.
Approving. The version bump itself is clean and the release notes now describe what actually shipped.

APPROVE — the bump is mechanically clean; the fail-closed exits and the harness controls verify independently
My brief was the fail-closed exit and the harness as a control. Verified on this head (2cd95b6), not taken from the threads.
The fail-closed exit
- The refusal path is real. When no nono resolves at the pinned absolute path,
agent startrefuses underisNonoStrict() || sandboxRequired || !isInteractiveTty()— exit 78, or 0 underTPS_SUPERVISED=1— naming the pinned path and the reason (agent.ts,REFUSAL_EXIT_CODE/SUPERVISED_REFUSAL_EXIT_CODEinnono.ts). The pinned resolution is used for the decision too, so a PATH-only nono can't make the launch look available and then fall through. - The exit-code split is load-bearing and documented where it bites. Refusal-exits-0 under supervision pairs with
KeepAlive {SuccessfulExit:false}so a refused unit goes quiet (the wrong pairing measured 13 relaunches in 12s) while a genuine crash still relaunches. The coupling is stated in the code comment at each unit-generation site (mail-watch.ts:323), not only in the changelog. - The gate runs before dispatch on the published path.
bin/tps.ts:254runsenforceLaunchControlOrExit()before the command switch, and the published launcher (bin/tps.cjs→dist/bin/tps.js) reaches it. The re-exec child carries--sandbox-requiredverbatim, so the non-TTY child can't refuse itself post-attestation — the storm coupling holds on both sides. - The supervisor fails closed at the launch site. No UID-only fallback; Landlock-probe failure → named refusal +
shutdown_children TERM. I walked all 7exit 1sites inside the seating loop (r6 + the r7 roster-shape additions): every one is preceded byshutdown_childrenin the same branch.
The harness as a control
- The all-or-nothing invariant is asserted over the source, not a fixture. Part A bounds the seating loop and walks every
exit 1backwards to the nearest block boundary looking forshutdown_children— a new exit reintroduces the orphan class and goes red naming the line. The assertion covers the class, not the instances the review happened to find. - The supervisor↔CLI coupling is mechanical.
security-properties.test.tsimportssandboxChildEnv()/systemReadFileCandidates('linux')and asserts the shell arrays equal them — the two launch points cannot drift. Profile resolution (absolute path at both sites, user-dir-then-bundled order, the COPY destination),AGENT_HOMEownership, and the shipped-agent smoke (no stand-in, readiness = the real pid file, supervisor exit asserted, agent ≥ the version that introducedcheck) are pinned the same way. The Dockerfile-without-COPY fails-first indocker.ymlcloses the ship-red gap r3 found. - The launch-level smoke exercises the built image, and the ordering is honest: it goes red against a published agent predating
check, so it can only pass after this release publishes 0.6.0 — the coupling works for us, not around us.
Release mechanics — checked
- Lockstep: all six manifests 0.6.0 (main was indeed split — cli/agent 0.5.5, platform 0.5.4, confirmed via the API); the four
optionalDependenciesexact pins are 0.6.0;bun.lockregenerated andbun install --frozen-lockfileexits 0; no0.5.xin any manifest or the lockfile; no0.5.5left in CHANGELOG.md — the ordering line reads 0.6.0. - Publish order in
release.ymlis agent → platform → meta, the only order that works with exact pins; the preflight (tag ==packages/cliversion, tag on main) enforces bump-then-tag by CI rather than convention. - The
launch-attestation.tsdelta fromb083e97is comment-only — the narrowed invariant and the KNOWN EXEMPTION block overstate nothing. The CHANGELOG scopes the sandbox claim precisely and points at cli#363 (open). - The exempted
--runtimepath is not reachable from any generated unit (mail-watch and office-connect units pass no--runtime), which bounds the residual until #363 lands.
One condition, not a blocker
--sandbox-required still passes the gate on the --runtime branch and then runs unconfined — documented, tracked in #363, and 0.5.4 shipped no sandbox at all, so this release is a strict improvement with a claim that now matches coverage. Treat "generated units never pass --runtime" as the invariant that keeps the interim safe, and land #363 before anything non-TTY is allowed to launch those runtimes under supervision.
18/18 checks green on this head. Approving.

New file. The fragment convention was adopted partway through this range, so five fragments exist for 332 commits — publishing only those would misrepresent the release as being about nono and
js-yaml. The section therefore leads with honest scope and a highlights list, carries the five fragments verbatim as detail, and ends with the full compare link. The fragments are consumed (.changelog/unreleased/is now empty).Nothing in CI gates on fragments in this repo; I checked before deciding.
Why this release matters beyond the version
f5bf721(portable compiled binaries, #336) is in this range. Without it the packaged binaries fail to resolve a native addon: on Linux that is an immediate error, on macOS it hangs indefinitely, sotps mail sendfrom an installed CLI silently loses the message andtps --versionprints nothing. That isops-l83i/ops-ruvm, open 45 days — not a code defect, an unreleased fix. Also in range: asocket.ymldeferTosilent no-op,js-yaml4.3.2, abrace-expansionoverride that pinned a still-vulnerable version, and three high DoS-class advisories.Verification
