fix(cli): make the mail archive loadable outside bun (bun:sqlite no longer static) - #396
Conversation
… bun:sqlite import) utils/archive.ts statically imported bun:sqlite, which put the bun: URL scheme in its module graph. Under node — the runtime the OpenClaw gateway loads the openclaw-tps-mail plugin under — the ESM loader rejects that scheme at load, so every importer of utils/archive (utils/mail, and therefore the plugin) failed to load: the gateway started with the plugin missing and mail dispatch was dead. Every test ran under bun test, where the scheme resolves, so nothing saw it. Resolve the sqlite binding only when a bun runtime is actually present. Under node the archive becomes a no-op that prints one stderr line per process (the audit gap stays visible, never silent) and queryArchive returns an empty list; under bun nothing changes — same DB path, same schema, same events. Adds a node plugin-load reproduction that spawns real node against the built plugin entry (fails on the pre-fix tree with ERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME), a CLI-level node import/no-op test, and a CI job that builds the plugin and imports it under node. Security review — head 20045014
Author tps-anvil is trusted, so this review executed on a built tree. Visibility checked first: tpsdev-ai/cli is public; no host names or personal names below. Diff = 6 files, +224/−7.
V1 node load. Built plugin entry under real node: LOADED, exit 0. Faithful pre-fix tree (5f6a7cff, static import { Database } from "bun:sqlite"), same command: ERRCODE=ERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME, exit 2.
V2 top-level await. target: ES2022 + module: NodeNext permit TLA; the emitted archive.js carries bunSqlite = await import("bun:sqlite") behind if (typeof globalThis.Bun !== "undefined"). Every importer loads under bun (root suite) and node (N1/N2): utils/mail.ts (static), commands/mail.ts (static + dynamic).
V3 bun parity. archive.test.ts 6/6; N2 2/2; the note is not printed under bun.
V4 degradation is visible, not silent. Under node logEvent returns, the note prints exactly once per process (N2 asserts length 1), queryArchive → [] (not a throw). Callers grepped: queryArchive is reached only from mail log (commands/mail.ts:430) and mail search (:565) — both display-only, rendering "No archive entries." / "No results found.". No path treats [] as a decision, matching the existing best-effort comment at mail.ts:1210.
V5 CI. The new node-plugin-load job's pins match the rest of the workflow (checkout 11bd719…, setup-bun 735343b…, socketdev ba6de6c…) and it runs on pull_request. npm run build || true is acceptable: the step asserts test -f dist/src/index.js and the node import is the real gate — I confirmed the plugin tsc exits 2 yet still emits dist/src/index.js, which then loads. The context is advisory until added to the ruleset; it cannot gate before that.
V6 confinement. My roots: bun run test → 1153 pass / 10 fail / 1163, 122 files; the 10 are environmental (nono/ssh lanes) and appear identically on base 5f6a7cff (1150/10). Head's +3 are exactly the new assertions; no regressions. Plugin suite 23/0. utils/mail.ts, commands/mail.ts, and the plugin src/ are untouched.
Lenses. Trust boundary — none new; load-time portability only. Secret handling — none. Auth/authz — none; the archive is not an authorization input. Failure modes — fail-closed to a visible no-op: never silent, never throws, and the one-line note names the gap.
Residual (documented in the fragment, not blocking): under the node gateway, mail events are not logged until a node:sqlite follow-up. The gap stays visible rather than silent.

Review at 20045014 — APPROVED. Author tps-anvil (trusted) — reviewed by executing on a built tree in ~/work/review-cli-396-kern (root bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build; plugin npm install + npm run build). Repo visibility checked before writing: public (repos/tpsdev-ai/cli API).
V1 — node load: reproduced both directions
- Head build, from the plugin dir:
node --input-type=module -e "import('<entry>')…"→LOADED, exit 0. (Node v26.8.1 on this host.) - Mutation (faithful pre-fix file, not a lazy add): restored the static
import { Database } from "bun:sqlite"fromorigin/main, rebuilt workspace + plugin → the same node import exits 2 withERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEMEon stderr — the exact cli#394 failure class. The builder's note is right that an added-unused-import mutation gets elided by tsc; the faithful file reproduces cleanly. - Restored the head file, rebuilt, re-verified
LOADED/ exit 0. Tree confirmed clean (git statusempty) after restore.
V2 — top-level await: permitted, and the right shape here
- tsconfig (root and
packages/cli):target ES2022,module NodeNext— TLA is supported by both; the builtdist/src/utils/archive.jsretains the top-levelawait import("bun:sqlite")inside theglobalThis.Bunguard (verified in the emitted file). - All importers are ESM (
"type": "module"in cli and agent packages; norequire()of the built utils found), so TLA adds no CJS constraint. Bun side:bun run testexercisesutils/mail.tsandcommands/mail.tsimporters (both call through to archive) — no loader or runtime issue; node side: N2 imports the builtutils/mail.jsunder node, exit 0. - Kern's ruling on TLA-vs-lazy: TLA at the top of the leaf is the correct shape here, and I would not trade it for a lazy
getDb()resolution. Reasons: (1) the module-graph portability is the load-time property that fixes #394 — it must hold at import time, not first-call time, and the guard expresses exactly that; (2) under bun the binding resolves once at module init, so the archive's first write doesn't pay an async import on the hot path, andlogEvent's fire-and-forget contract stays synchronous; (3) the failure mode is earlier and better: if the resolution ever throws, it throws at import ofarchive.jsalone (the guard makes that unreachable unlessBunis defined butbun:sqlitebroken — a real bug worth surfacing at load), rather than as a surprise inside the NthlogEvent. A lazy variant is also correct, but the TLA costs ~1 ms at import under node (measured) and keeps the degradation decision at the module boundary where the docblock lives. Not a style blocker either way; the PR's choice is the one I'd make.
V3 — bun parity: unchanged
- Existing archive suite green:
logEventcreates the DB, FTS search, agent filter, limit — all pass on the head build (8/8 in the archive files incl. the two new parity cases). - Live probe under bun with a temp
TPS_MAIL_DIR:logEvent→queryArchive({search})returns the row (BUN_ROWS=1) — same DB path, same schema, same events. - The "archive unavailable" note is not printed under bun (new parity test passes; my live probe printed nothing).
V4 — node degradation is visible, not silent
logEventunder node: returns without throwing; exactly one stderr line (mail archive unavailable under this runtime (no bun:sqlite); events are not being logged) across multiple calls in one process — verified by the N2 test'snotes.toHaveLength(1)on twologEvent+ onequeryArchive.queryArchivereturns[], does not throw (N2 assertsQUERY=[]).- Callers of
queryArchive(grep, src only):commands/mail.tslog(:430) andsearch(:565) — both treat[]as "No archive entries." / "No results found." display states, and nothing gates a decision on archive emptiness (the back-pressure warning beside thelogbranch reads the maildir, not the archive).packages/agentnever queries the archive. The plugin (plugins/openclaw-tps-mail/src) never callslogEvent/queryArchive— mail delivery is maildir-filesystem based, so the node degradation cannot change routing or delivery, only the audit trail. No path conflates "archive returned[]" with "no mail happened" in a way that alters behavior.
V5 — CI job
- New
node-plugin-loadjob: same pinned SHAs as every other job in the workflow (actions/checkout@11bd71…v4,oven-sh/setup-bun@735343…v2,socketdev/action@ba6de6c…v1.3.2) — consistent, no floating tags. npm run build || true+test -f dist/src/index.js: acceptable to me. The tolerated red is the plugin's pre-#393 tsc (missingopenclaw/plugin-sdktype declarations — reproduced here: 5 type errors, dist still emitted), and the gate is not the tsc exit — it istest -f distplus the real node import below it, which is the assertion that reproduces #394. Swallowing tsc would be wrong if the import weren't the gate; it is.- The job runs on
pull_requestto main (the workflow's existing trigger set), and it shows green on this PR (the one check I'll name:Node plugin load (openclaw-tps-mail)— pass). Required-vs-advisory: as a new check it is advisory until added to the branch ruleset — I could not see the repo's rulesets (the rules API returned not-found for my token), so I can't confirm whether any required contexts exist at all. My recommendation: make it required. This is precisely the check that would have caught #394 before the gateway deploy, it's cheap (~47 s), and its failure mode is a hard plugin-load failure — the kind of red you want blocking, not advisory.
V6 — confinement + numbers (mine)
git diff --stat origin/main...HEAD: exactly 6 files, +224/−7 —archive.ts(46+/7−), three test files, the workflow (+34), the changelog fragment.utils/mail.tsuntouched; pluginsrc/untouched (only itstest/node-load.test.tsadded). Matches the claim.- Root
bun run teston the built head tree: 1153 pass / 10 fail, 1163 tests across 122 files (workspace = agent 101/0 + cli 1150-pass/10-fail + pi-tps-mail 3 skip). The 10 fails are identical onorigin/main5f6a7cff(control run: 1150 pass / 10 fail; fail-set diff vs head = empty — same 10 test names, all in thenono/Landland/ssh-reachability/supervision family, environmental on this Mac, including a 15 s ssh timeout). Net tests: head runs 1163 vs main 1160 = +3, matching the three new test files. Not 1261 — the builder's baseline presumably included the plugin's 23, which I ran separately: plugin suite 23 pass / 0 fail (bun testinplugins/openclaw-tps-mail, including the newnode-load.test.ts— LOADED under real node).
Nits (non-blocking)
- The once-per-process note is emitted on the first archive call, not at import — a node process that imports
utils/mailbut never sends/list mail logs nothing. That is defensible (import alone doesn't prove the archive is wanted), and the gateway plugin never calls the archive at all, so for the gateway the note comes from the CLI'slogEventinsidetps mail send— visible. Just noting the visibility boundary: a process that only reads viaqueryArchivegets the note (it callsgetDb), so the gap is announced on every real touch. Fine. bunSqliteis typedanyandnew bunSqlite.Database(...)is untyped — consistent with the old@ts-ignore, andskipLibCheckcovers it; no new type hole opened, just the old one relocated.
The fix is minimal, the failure class is reproduced and closed in both directions, parity under bun is verified, the degradation is loud and single-shot, and the CI job is the correct gate for the plugin-load property. Approving.
…ts on PR-controlled installs The node-plugin-load job checks out PR-controlled code and ran npm install, whose lifecycle scripts could read the token actions/checkout persists in .git/config. Set persist-credentials: false on that checkout (the promote-latest job already does) and install the plugin with --ignore-scripts; its dependencies are file: links and the SDK, so no script is needed. Security review — delta at 855fbd75
Read-only delta review of one hardening commit (20045014..855fbd75, linear). Visibility checked first: tpsdev-ai/cli is public; no host names or personal names below. Diff = .github/workflows/test.yml only, +3/−1, inside the node-plugin-load job.
H1 — token no longer persists. The hunk adds persist-credentials: false to this job's checkout (the only such line in the job; the persist-credentials: false at line 59 is the pre-existing promote-latest job, untouched). Nothing later in the job consumes git credentials: no push, no fetch, no private-clone step, no secrets. use — the job is checkout → setup-bun → socketdev → sfw bun install --frozen-lockfile → two builds → node import. Removing the persisted token breaks nothing there.
H2 — --ignore-scripts does not break the install. On Darwin arm64 26.6, in plugins/openclaw-tps-mail: npm install --ignore-scripts exits 0; npm run build exits 2 (the known pre-#393 tsc red) yet still emits dist/src/index.js; the node import of that entry prints LOADED, exit 0. The plugin's deps are file: links to the workspace packages plus the SDK, so no lifecycle script is needed.
H3 — the job still gates. CI run for 855fbd75, job Node plugin load (openclaw-tps-mail): conclusion: success (15:56:07→15:56:45). Its log shows node --version → v22.23.2, then npm install --ignore-scripts, then the import step printing LOADED. Naming only this check and its conclusion.
H4 — nothing else moved. git diff --stat 20045014..855fbd75 = .github/workflows/test.yml alone. src/, the three test files, and the changelog fragment are untouched.
Security value: with credentials unpersisted and lifecycle scripts suppressed on the PR-controlled install, the bun:-load reproduction no longer runs PR-controlled code with the checkout token reachable — closing the hole CodeRabbit flagged, consistent with the rest of the workflow. The --ignore-scripts flag also wins over any project .npmrc, so a PR cannot re-enable scripts. No new trust boundary, secret, or authz surface.

Delta review at 855fbd75 — APPROVED. One commit on top of 20045014 (verified: git log 20045014..855fbd75 = exactly 855fbd7), workflow-only (+3/−1, both hunks inside node-plugin-load; every other job byte-identical). Repo visibility checked before writing: public (repos/tpsdev-ai/cli API). Platform for H2: macOS arm64.
H1 — checkout hardening is scoped to this job only, and nothing there needs credentials
The persist-credentials: false hunk sits inside node-plugin-load's actions/checkout step and nowhere else (hunk headers @@ -95 +95 @@ and @@ -108 +110 @@ are both inside that job; the diff shows no other job touched). The promote-latest job already carried persist-credentials: false — so this closes the gap rather than introducing an inconsistency. Nothing later in node-plugin-load needs git credentials: the steps are sfw bun install (frozen lockfile, no fetch of new code), bun run build, npm install --ignore-scripts of file: links (local paths, no registry git deps), tsc, test -f, and a node import — no push, no private fetch, no git invocation at all. The token's only consumer in this job was persistence-by-default, which the delta removes.
H2 — --ignore-scripts does not break the install or the gate (executed on macOS arm64)
Fresh rm -rf node_modules dist in plugins/openclaw-tps-mail, then npm install --ignore-scripts → exit 0. The plugin's dependencies are exactly two file: links (@tpsdev-ai/agent, @tpsdev-ai/cli → workspace packages) and their transitive deps from the registry — no postinstall-carrying package is needed for tsc to emit. npm run build → the known pre-#393 tsc red (5 type errors, unchanged from my round-one run) and dist is still emitted; test -f dist/src/index.js holds. The node import of the built entry prints LOADED, exit 0. Same end state as the approved 20045014 build, minus script execution.
H3 — the job still gates on the new head (CI is the evidence)
The CI run for 855fbd75 (job 106823599613, run 35750663844): Node plugin load (openclaw-tps-mail) — success (conclusion: success, completed). The job log shows the install step running npm install --ignore-scripts verbatim and the import step printing LOADED. That is the one check I name; no other CI characterization.
H4 — nothing else moved
git diff 20045014..855fbd75 --stat = .github/workflows/test.yml only, 4 lines (+3/−1). src/ untouched, the three test files untouched, the changelog fragment untouched — confirmed by the stat, not the commit message.
Assessment
The hardening is correct and minimal: the two changes kill exactly the two halves of the flagged exposure — the token never persists into the PR-controlled tree, and no lifecycle script executes on the PR-controlled tree even if some dependency ever grew one — while the gate (dist present + node import) is unchanged and green. The residual that remains (npm resolving registry tarballs, tsc reading PR-controlled sources) is the same residual every job that compiles PR code has, and it does not include script execution or credential access. Both hunks carry comments saying why, which is what the next workflow editor needs. Approving at 855fbd75.
Problem
The
openclaw-tps-mailplugin could not load under Node — the runtime the OpenClaw gateway runs it under.packages/cli/src/utils/archive.tsstatically importedbun:sqlite, so thebun:URL scheme was part of that module's graph. Node's ESM loader rejects that scheme at module-graph load:Because
utils/mail.tsimportsutils/archive.jseagerly — and the plugin importsutils/mail— a single unconditionalbun:import made every importer unloadable: the gateway started with the plugin missing and reviewer mail was dead. (commands/mail.tsreachesarchivetoo, same graph.)Nothing caught it because every test runs under
bun test, wherebun:sqliteresolves.Fix
utils/archive.tsnow resolves the sqlite binding only when a bun runtime is actually present. The module graph is therefore portable:getDb()returns null,logEvent()returns without writing,queryArchive()returns[], and the process prints ONE stderr line —mail archive unavailable under this runtime (no bun:sqlite); events are not being logged— so the audit gap is visible, never silent. The note is emitted at most once per process, however many entry points hit the degraded path.utils/mail.tsis untouched (its static import of./archive.jsis fine oncearchiveloads under node). Under node thetps mail log/tps mail searcharchive subcommands print that same one-line note and exit 0 (verified below). Nonode:sqliteadapter is added here — parity of archive logging under the gateway is a separate follow-up.Tests

Fails on the pre-fix tree withERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME.packages/cli/test/archive-node-runtime.test.ts— spawns realnodeimporting the builtutils/mail.js(calling nothing → exit 0), then callslogEvent/queryArchiveunder node: returns without throwing,[], and prints exactly one note.packages/cli/test/archive.test.ts— the existing bun archive tests pass unchanged, plus one assertion that under bun the note is NOT printed.node-plugin-loadjob in.github/workflows/test.yml(checkout →bun install --frozen-lockfile→bun run build→npm install+ build in the plugin dir → import the built plugin undernode). The plugin'stscis red pre-existing (missingopenclaw/plugin-sdktype declarations) but still emitsdist, so the build step tolerates the red (|| true) and the node import is the actual gate. The plugin is otherwise outside CI.Evidence
