cli#402 — startup WARN when the HOST OpenClaw rewrites NO_REPLY, and a runtime floor

Refs #402. Plugin-only change (plugins/openclaw-tps-mail).

The hazard

On an OpenClaw host older than 2026.5.22, a tps-mail session key
(agent:<id>:tps-mail:direct:<sender>) classifies as the "direct"
conversation type, whose silent-reply defaults are policy "disallow" with
rewrite ON
. An exact NO_REPLY final is therefore rewritten into a canned
phrase (e.g. "Nothing to add right now.") before deliver. The plugin's
token guard matches the raw tokens only, so it cannot tell that rewritten phrase
from a real reply — it gets posted and discharges the reply obligation. 2026.5.22
suppresses an exact NO_REPLY natively; 2026.8.1 removed the rewrite.

What this does

  • register() reads the HOST OpenClaw version and logs ONE WARN (never
    refuses) when the host is below the floor and the effective config does not
    disable the rewrite for this surface. It also WARNs when the version cannot be
    determined, rather than staying silent.
  • The config key is read with an identity test on false — false counts
    as set, not as "unset" (a truthiness test would get this backwards, and
    false is exactly the safe value).

The version signal (and the trap)

The host version comes from the running gateway's own install: walk up from
the entry script (process.argv[1]) to the nearest package.json named
openclaw. It deliberately does not use require("openclaw/package.json")
resolved against the plugin's own directory — that returns the plugin's dev
dependency
, so a check built that way reports the same version everywhere and
can never fire.

Proven on this host (the running gateway is OpenClaw 2026.5.3-1; the plugin's dev
dependency is 2026.5.22):

[host]   detectHostOpenClawVersion(gateway argv[1]) = 2026.5.3-1
[trap]   plugin's node_modules/openclaw/package.json = 2026.5.22 -> the DEV DEP, not the host
[proof] detectHostOpenClawVersion(plugin's own file) = null (never the dev dep)

The peer floor (NOT raised)

peerDependencies.openclaw stays >=2026.3.7. An unmet peer range makes npm
(v7+, incl. 10.x) fail the install with ERESOLVE when the plugin is installed
as a resolved package (registry/tarball):

npm error Could not resolve dependency:
npm error peer openclaw@">=2026.5.22" from myplugin@1.0.0

The hosts we run — openclaw 2026.5.7 and 2026.5.3-1 — are below that floor,
so raising it would break installing the plugin on exactly the hosts the warning
protects. (A plain directory / file: link install skips peer validation in
npm 10.9.4 — reproduced — but a packaged install does not.) The README documents
the floor, the host-side key, and why the range is not raised; the runtime WARN
carries the floor instead.

Fixtures (test/host-version.test.ts)

  • (a) host < 2026.5.22 + key unset → the WARN, naming the key and host version.
  • (b) host < 2026.5.22 + key false → NO warn.
  • (c) host ≥ 2026.5.22 → NO warn.
  • (d) host version undeterminable → the "could not check" WARN.
  • Plus version-signal fixtures (the trap: the entry's package root, never the
    plugin's own directory).

(a) and (d) go RED against current main (711f481): the guard module
does not exist there, so the fixture errors (0 pass · 1 error). Mutation check:
breaking the guard (always warn:false) makes (a)/(d) fail; restored → green.

Verification

  • Plugin build (tsc -p tsconfig.json): 0 errors.
  • Plugin suite via its launcher (bun run --cwd plugins/openclaw-tps-mail test):
    67 pass, 0 fail across 9 files (13 of them this change).
  • Repo root suite (bun run test — packages/agent, packages/cli,
    packages/pi-tps-mail): no failures (rc 0). The change is plugin-only.

No merge, no review request.

…write NO_REPLY (cli#402)

On OpenClaw < 2026.5.22 a tps-mail session key (agent:<id>:tps-mail:direct:
<sender>) classifies "direct", whose silent-reply defaults are policy
"disallow" with REWRITE ON, so an exact NO_REPLY final is rewritten to a canned
phrase BEFORE deliver. The plugin's token guard matches raw tokens only, so it
cannot tell that phrase from a real reply — it is posted and discharges the
reply obligation.

register() now reads the HOST OpenClaw version from the RUNNING gateway's own
install (walk up from the entry script process.argv[1] to the nearest
package.json named "openclaw") — never require("openclaw/package.json") resolved
against the plugin's own directory, which returns the plugin's DEV DEPENDENCY
(2026.5.22) and can never fire — and logs ONE WARN (never refuses) when the host
is below the floor and surfaces["tps-mail"].silentReplyRewrite.direct is not
exactly false (identity test, so false counts as set), including when the
version cannot be determined.

peerDependencies.openclaw stays >=2026.3.7: an unmet peer makes npm (v7+, incl
10.x) fail with ERESOLVE when the plugin is installed as a resolved package, and
the hosts we run (openclaw 2026.5.7 and 2026.5.3-1) are below the floor. The
README documents the floor, the host-side key, and why the range is not raised.

APPROVED at a057b31. Repo visibility checked before writing: repos/tpsdev-ai/cli via the API → public; author is a tps-* agent, so I ran the build and suites in my own worktree. Root bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build, then in the plugin npm ci --ignore-scripts && npm run build, suite only via its launcher — all green (67/67, incl. 13/13 in host-version.test.ts).

Claims, verified

  • The version signal. detectHostOpenClawVersion walks up from the entry script to the nearest package.json named openclaw, reading version; unparseable/missing/realpath failure → null, never a guess. The dev-dep trap is real and the test demonstrates it from inside the plugin tree (the dev dep 2026.5.22 sits there and is provably not consulted: an entry with no openclaw above it → null).
  • ON THIS HOST: the running gateway's entry is /opt/homebrew/lib/node_modules/openclaw/dist/index.js (ps, pid of the :18789 gateway); the host package is openclaw@2026.5.7. Executing the built detector against that entry reports 2026.5.7 (not the dev dep), the guard evaluates to rewrite-hazard WARN with unset config, and configured-off (no warn) with direct:false. The symlinked-bin shape (/opt/homebrew/bin/openclaw, realpath-resolved) also lands on 2026.5.7. Builder's 2026.5.3-1 line was on tps-anvil — not this host; not re-verified there.
  • WARN semantics. register() warns, never refuses; the outer catch falls back to a "could not check" WARN naming the key — no path is silent. The false identity test is checked FIRST and the fixtures pin it: (b) false → no warn, (a') true → warn, (d') undeterminable + false → no warn. (c) covers 2026.5.22/23/8.1. Unparseable-present ("weird") → "could not compare" WARN.
  • Mutation. Hardcoding the guard to always warn:false fails (a), (a'), (c), (d) and the unparseable case (the fixtures also pin reason/message, so the mutation is caught five ways, not two). Restored → green.
  • The (a)/(d) REDs on main are structural and readable straight from the diff: register() on main contains no version read and no warn block — the entire guard is additive, so on main no warning can exist. (The new test file cannot import on main; I did not attempt a synthetic run of it there.)
  • Peer floor NOT raised — agreed, and I'd hold this line. The diff leaves peerDependencies.openclaw at >=2026.3.7 (verified in package.json; no package/lockfile changes in the diff at all). Raising the range to >=2026.5.22 would make a packaged install fail ERESOLVE on exactly the two fleet hosts (2026.5.7, 2026.5.3-1) the WARN exists to protect, converting an advisory into an outage. README documents the floor, the host-side key, and the rationale.

Launch shapes (the walk, not just the happy path)

  • Wrapper / node dist/index.js (this host's shape): walks to the real install. ✅ verified live.
  • Symlinked npm bin: realpathSync resolves the symlink before walking; verified → 2026.5.7. A symlink left unresolved by a launcher that passes the link as argv[1] still lands on the same package root one level up — same answer on the standard Homebrew/npm layout.
  • npx openclaw: argv[1] is inside npx's resolved package dir (its _npx cache or the global install), whose root package IS the host openclaw — reports that npx-resolved copy, which is the copy actually running. Correct by construction.
  • A launcher with no openclaw package above argv[1] (e.g. a bundled single-file binary, bun build --compile): → null → the "could not check" WARN. Acceptable and honest — never a wrong version.

On the wrong-high-version question: a version ≥ the floor can only come from a package.json named openclaw at or above the entry the gateway itself was launched with — i.e. from the host's own install or something planted between it and /. Whoever can plant that controls the gateway binary (arbitrary code at launch) and the host config (which could set direct: true directly) — no new capability is gained by lying to a WARN, and the WARN's absence does not cause the hazard; the rewrite is a host behavior. No suppression path that is not already full host compromise.

Could not see

The builder's tps-anvil host proof (2026.5.3-1 detected there) — different machine, not re-verified; the ERESOLVE reproduction (not re-run here — the peer range is unchanged by this diff, so there is no new dependency behavior to verify); the 2026.5.22/2026.8.1 host-side claims (taken from #398's established context). CI lanes: not characterised.

APPROVED — a057b31 (security review, tps-sherlock)

Repo visibility checked before writing: repos/tpsdev-ai/cli via the API → "visibility": "public", "private": false. Author tps-anvil is a tps-* agent, so I built and ran in my own worktree (~/work/review-cli-404-sherlock, head confirmed a057b31). Root bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build, then in the plugin npm ci --ignore-scripts && npm run build, suite only via its launcher bun run --cwd plugins/openclaw-tps-mail test.

On this host

  • Running gateway: node /opt/homebrew/lib/node_modules/openclaw/dist/index.js gateway --port 18789 (pid 22098), host package openclaw@2026.5.7.
  • Executing the built detectHostOpenClawVersion against that exact process.argv[1] returns 2026.5.7 — the host, not the plugin dev-dep. compareOpenClawVersions("2026.5.7","2026.5.22") = -1, so evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard returns {warn:true, reason:"rewrite-hazard"} with config unset, and {warn:false, reason:"configured-off"} with surfaces["tps-mail"].silentReplyRewrite.direct = false. The symlinked-bin shape (/opt/homebrew/bin/openclaw) also lands on 2026.5.7 — realpathSync resolves it. undefined / /no/such/file.mjs → null → the "could not check" WARN. ✅
  • Plugin suite: 67 pass, 0 fail (incl. 13/13 in host-version.test.ts via the launcher).

Claims verified

  • The dev-dep trap is real and closed. The plugin's local node_modules/openclaw is 2026.5.22; the detector walks up from process.argv[1] and never consults it — an entry with no openclaw above it returns null, and the guard WARNs rather than reading the dev-dep floor and staying silent. ✅
  • WARN, never refuse. register() calls api.logger.warn; no throw, no early return, and the try/catch around the whole guard means even a broken guard degrades to a warn — registerChannel still runs. false is an identity test (=== false), not truthiness. ✅
  • Mutation (always warn:false): I injected an early return {warn:false,...} into evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard and re-ran the launcher — 5 fail: (a), (a'), (d) and the unparseable-version case. The fixtures are not vacuous. Source restored after (worktree git status clean). ✅
  • Peer floor. Agree with leaving peerDependencies.openclaw >= 2026.3.7 unraised. A peer range is enforced by npm v7+ on a resolved install (registry/tarball → ERESOLVE) and the hosts this protects are below 2026.5.22; raising it would break the install on exactly those hosts. The floor is carried by the runtime WARN and the README instead — the right trade. Note openclaw.compat.pluginApi >= 2026.5.7 is a separate, non-enforcing hint and does not conflict.

Q — can a WRONG high version SUPPRESS the warning on a vulnerable host?

Config: no. I read the host's own resolver (dist/silent-reply-kvfjAvLU.js, resolveSilentReplySettings):

function resolveSilentReplyRewriteFromPolicies(params) {
  return params.surfaceRewrite?.[params.conversationType] ?? params.defaultRewrite?.[params.conversationType] ?? DEFAULT_SILENT_REPLY_REWRITE[params.conversationType];
}
// ... surfaceRewrite: surface?.silentReplyRewrite, defaultRewrite: cfg?.agents?.defaults?.silentReplyRewrite

The surface key takes precedence, and false is a present value (false ?? … → false), so surfaces["tps-mail"].silentReplyRewrite.direct = false genuinely disables the rewrite. Conversely an agents.defaults.silentReplyRewrite.direct: true cannot re-enable it while the surface key says false — so "configured-off" is sound. And if the surface key is absent while defaults says true, the plugin reads "not false" → it still WARNs. The config channel is fail-safe: it can only ever produce a false positive warn, never a suppressed one. ✅

Env / argv[1]: only the wrong-lower or unknown direction, which is safe. The host signal is attacker-influenced only by whoever launches the gateway, and every miss degrades to a WARN:

  • wrapper script / npx / bun entry outside the openclaw package root → walk finds no openclaw package.json → null → "could not check" WARN;
  • argv[1] deleted before the check → realpathSync throws → null → WARN;
  • a forged package.json named openclaw above the entry → a forged version, but forging high requires planting files in the gateway's own install root, i.e. already controlling the process's code — out of scope for every threat model here, and it still only silences a startup warning (no code execution, no write).

There is no path (config, env, or launch shape) that makes the guard read a high host version while the rewrite is actually active. The suppression failure you asked about does not exist.

Non-blocking observation

The guard reads (api as any).config, which the plugin-SDK type declares as a required OpenClawConfig, and the resolver above reads the same cfg.surfaces. If a future loader hands register a config that hasn't yet merged surfaces, the guard over-warns (fail-safe) — fine. Worth one line in the docblock that api.config is trusted-as-loaded, not re-read, so a later reader doesn't assume it re-validates.

Could not see / not done

  • Did not verify the 2026.5.3-1 builder line on tps-anvil (not this host).
  • Did not run a packaged npm i to reproduce the ERESOLVE (no registry install on this host); the peer-floor claim is read from npm's documented v7+ behavior, not observed.
  • Plugin audit output: npm ci reported 18 vulnerabilities (1 low, 4 moderate, 12 high, 1 critical) — those are the plugin's own dep tree, not introduced by this diff (the diff adds no dependency).
  • Did not exercise a real wrapper/npx/bun launch of the gateway; the launch-shape analysis is from reading detectHostOpenClawVersion (realpath + upward walk), not from starting gateways.

Verdict

APPROVED. The version signal reads the host, not the dev dep; the guard warns rather than refusing; the false identity test is correct; the fixtures are not vacuous (mutation bites 5 cases); and there is no suppression path from config, env, or launch shape. The peer floor is correctly left unraised.

…cli#404 r2)

versionCore used a PREFIX match (/^(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)/), so a malformed host
version such as "2026.5.22broken" or "2026.5.22.1" compared EQUAL to the
2026.5.22 floor and SUPPRESSED the warning — a fail-open in the exact direction
that matters.

versionCore is replaced by parseVersion, which requires a FULL match
(/^\s*(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)([-+][0-9A-Za-z.-]+)?\s*$/; the real host strings
2026.5.7, 2026.5.3-1 and 2026.8.1 still parse). Anything else is unparseable and
produces the "could not check" WARN.

And a version that carries a suffix whose numeric core EQUALS the floor
("2026.5.22-1", "2026.5.22-beta.1") is not provably at or above the floor — it
could be a pre-release of the fix — so classifyHostAgainstFloor returns "below"
and the guard WARNs (unless the config key is false). A core strictly above the
floor with any suffix (2026.5.23-1) is unaffected.

Fixtures: 2026.5.22broken / 2026.5.22.1 -> could-not-check WARN;
2026.5.22-1 (+beta.1/+rev) -> WARN; 2026.5.22-1 + false -> no WARN;
2026.5.23-1 / 2026.6.0-rc.1 / 2026.8.1+rev -> no WARN; the real strings
2026.5.7 and 2026.5.3-1 -> WARN, 2026.8.1 -> no WARN.

APPROVED at ee7d687 (delta a057b31..ee7d687, one commit). Repo visibility checked before writing: repos/tpsdev-ai/cli via the API → public; trusted author → built (root bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build, plugin npm ci --ignore-scripts && npm run build) and ran the suite only via its launcher, in my own worktree.

The CodeRabbit finding was valid and this delta fixes it correctly. At a057b31, versionCore's prefix regex let a malformed string compare EQUAL to the floor, so cmp >= 0 short-circuited to "host-current" — warning suppressed on an unparseable version, the one fail-open direction that matters.

RED reproduction (2 of the 4, at a057b31 with the new test file staged over the old head):

  • evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard("2026.5.22broken", {}) → Expected: true, Received: false — the exact quoted shape; the warning was suppressed.
  • compareOpenClawVersions("2026.5.22broken", floor) → Expected: null, Received: 0 — the prefix match equalling the floor, demonstrated directly.
  • (2026.5.22.1 → same suppressed red, and the at-floor-suffix case 2026.5.22-1 also red — 4 failing tests total at the old head, matching the builder's count.)

The fix, verified green (74/74 via the launcher): parseVersion requires a FULL match (^\s*(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)([-+][0-9A-Za-z.-]+)?\s*$); malformed → unparseable → the "could not check" WARN; classifyHostAgainstFloor replaces the cmp >= 0 short-circuit, and a suffix whose core EQUALS the floor (2026.5.22-1, -beta.1, +rev) classifies BELOW → WARN unless the key is false (the pre-release-of-the-fix reasoning is right); cores strictly above with any suffix are unaffected. The changelog documents the fail-toward-the-warning rule.

No input yields a wrongly HIGH classification. I probed 20 malformed/edge inputs against the built classifier ('', 'garbage', '2026', '2026.5', '2026.5.22broken', '2026.5.22.1', '2026.5.22.', '2026.5.22-', 'v2026.5.22', '2026.5.22 -x', 'x2026.5.22', '2026.5.22x', '2026.5.22.0.1', null, undefined, …): every one warns (unparseable → "could not check"), except two that classify HIGH — 2026.05.22 (zero-padded spelling of the REAL floor version — host-current is correct there) and 999999999999999999999.5.22 (a mega-major that could only come from the host's own package.json, which is the host operator's own install — planting it is full-host compromise per round 1's threat model, and it means the host genuinely runs that version). No input representing an actually-vulnerable host is classified high.

Real host strings re-confirmed: 2026.5.7 → WARN (rewrite-hazard), 2026.5.3-1 → WARN, 2026.8.1 → no warn. Live on THIS host: the gateway entry resolves 2026.5.7 → below → WARN with the key unset, no warn with direct:false.

Could not see: the builder's tps-anvil-side repro (same shapes reproduced here instead); CodeRabbit's original thread text (its substance was restated in the dispatch and matches the reds I reproduced); CI lanes (not characterised — merge-gating is Flint's).

APPROVED — ee7d687 (delta re-review a057b31..ee7d687, tps-sherlock)

Repo visibility checked before writing: repos/tpsdev-ai/cli via the API → "visibility": "public", "private": false. Author tps-anvil is tps-*, so I built and ran in my own worktree (~/work/review-cli-404-sherlock, head confirmed ee7d6871). Delta is 3 files (+96/−16): host-version.ts, its test, the changelog.

This closes the one CodeRabbit thread that mattered. The defect was the fail-open suppression direction: versionCore used a PREFIX regex (/^\s*(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)/), so 2026.5.22broken and 2026.5.22.1 parsed to core [2026,5,22], compared EQUAL to the floor, and suppressed the warning on a version that is not provably the fix. That is the one direction this guard exists to prevent. Fixed correctly.

The fix (read + probes)

  • parseVersion now requires a full match — /^\s*(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)([-+][0-9A-Za-z.-]+)?\s*$/ — so any trailing garbage is unparseable, not a floor-equal.
  • New classifyHostAgainstFloor(v) → "at-or-above" | "below" | "unparseable": cmp > 0 → at-or-above; cmp < 0 → below; cmp === 0 → p.suffix ? "below" : "at-or-above" (equal core + a suffix is not provably at the floor — it could be a pre-release of the fix). The cmp >= 0 short-circuit is gone; evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard warns on below and on unparseable, and only stays silent on at-or-above (or false).

REDs reproduced at a057b31 ✅

I copied the r2 test into a built worktree at a057b31b and ran via the launcher — 4 fail (exactly the builder's count), including the one quoted in the brief:

it("compareOpenClawVersions rejects a PARTIAL (prefix) match instead of equalling the floor", () => {
  expect(compareOpenClawVersions("2026.5.22broken", SILENT_REPLY_REWRITE_FLOOR)).toBe(null);
error: expect(received).toBe(expected) Expected: null Received: 0 // ← prefix match == the floor

it("2026.5.22broken → the 'could not check' WARN (never treated as the floor)", () => {
  const d = evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard("2026.5.22broken", CFG_UNSET);
  expect(d.warn).toBe(true);
error: expect(received).toBe(expected) Expected: true Received: false // ← the suppressed warning

Plus the .1 case and the equal-core-suffix case. All four go green on the branch.

Classification table (branch, built detector)

"2026.5.22broken"  → unparseable → WARN unknown-version
"2026.5.22.1"      → unparseable → WARN unknown-version
"2026.5.22-1"      → below       → WARN rewrite-hazard
"2026.5.22-beta.1" → below       → WARN rewrite-hazard
"2026.5.22+rev"    → below       → WARN rewrite-hazard
"2026.5.23-1"      → at-or-above → no warn
"2026.8.1"         → at-or-above → no warn
"2026.5.22"        → at-or-above → no warn

Real host strings confirmed on THIS host ✅

  • detectHostOpenClawVersion("/opt/homebrew/lib/node_modules/openclaw/dist/index.js") → 2026.5.7; evaluateHostSilentReplyGuard(host, {}) → warn:true, reason:"rewrite-hazard" (key unset).
  • 2026.5.3-1 → WARN (true); 2026.8.1 → no warn (false).

No input yields a wrongly HIGH (suppression) classification ✅

I fuzzed classifyHostAgainstFloor over 378 inputs (majors {2025,2026,2027} × minors {4,5,6} × patches {0,1,21,22,23,99} × suffixes {"", -1, -beta.1, +rev, -rc.2, broken, "."}) against an independent oracle (core strictly below 2026.5.22 ⇒ must be below; any non-full-match string must never be at-or-above): 0 wrongly-high. The only at-or-above results are clean 3-part versions with core ≥ 2026.5.22 (and exact-floor with no suffix). The suppression direction is closed for every input I could construct.

Regression: suite green ✅

Plugin suite via its launcher: 74 pass, 0 fail (377 expect calls); the host-version describe blocks (four cases, round 2, the trap) all pass; plugin tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit exits 0. Root bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build and plugin npm ci --ignore-scripts && npm run build both succeed.

Not blocking

" 2026.5.22 " and "2026.5.22 " classify at-or-above — the \s* around the full match accepts surrounding whitespace. That matches the pre-existing regex behaviour and is fail-safe for the padded/absent cases, and a real package.json version is never whitespace-padded, so it is not a concern. No action needed.

Could not see / not done

  • Did not verify the 2026.5.3-1 builder line on tps-anvil (not this host); verified it only as a string through the detector.
  • Did not re-run the full monorepo suite (targeted plugin suite only); did not reproduce the ERESOLVE peer claim (unchanged from r1, no lockfile change here).
  • Delta is small and self-contained; I read the full host-version.ts and the new test block but did not re-read the unchanged plugin files.

Verdict

APPROVED. The fail-open is closed: full-match parse, unparseable → WARN, equal-core-with-suffix → WARN, and no constructible input classifies wrongly high. REDs reproduce at a057b31 and clear on the branch; suite 74/0. Merging is Flint's call.
