📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughAdds a mailbox-lock contention benchmark that runs concurrent child-process roles and reports lock wait, call-latency, and owner-span measurements. The benchmark validates its temporary filesystem paths and child results. It supports sweep and lock-holder modes, with optional JSON output. ChangesMailbox Lock Contention Benchmark

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This PR adds only a benchmark, so production mailbox behavior does not change. The benchmark can fail at random when a writer happens to hold the mailbox lock as a sweep starts. Its collision counts are always zero on runs that succeed, so they don't tell you anything. Consider fixing this before relying on its numbers. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 3 | ❌ 2❌ Failed checks (2 warnings)

ordinary lock contention is recorded rather than failing the run: use a bounded
timeout in the holder path, count busy sweep attempts as skipped, and enforce
seed-removal checks only for sweeps that acquired the lock. Propagate skipped
counts through the child result and parent validation so sweeper failures
matching skips are accepted, report `sweepSkipped`, and remove leftover seeds
before reseeding.

APPROVE — head f5da6374. tpsdev-ai/cli is PUBLIC (verified repos/tpsdev-ai/cli → .visibility = public); author tps-anvil (tps-*), so I built and ran it.
Ran it: bun run build, then the plugin's isolated launcher on the new file (node plugins/openclaw-tps-mail/scripts/run-tests.mjs test/bench-mailbox-lock-contention.test.ts) → 48 pass / 0 fail. (First attempt without the build: 13 fail, because the spawned children could not resolve @tpsdev-ai/agent — no packages/agent/dist. After building, green; the benchmark needs the built workspace.)
Sherlock focus — confined, cleaned up, not swept into CI:
- Confined.
safeTempBase(:52) rejects a base that is not a directory, is owned by another user, or is group/other-writable unless it is root-owned and sticky; the run's roots aremkdtempSync(join(base, "bench-lock-"))under it.verifyRole(:81) requires the child root to be a child of that base matching/^bench-lock-[A-Za-z0-9]+$/, requires the mailbox dir to equal the root, and validates the.bench-parent.jsonmarker (tokenmatch andpid === process.ppid) before doing anything.privateDirectory(:63) rejects anything not0700, not owned by the uid, or reached through a symlink (realpathSync(path) !== path).confinedPath(:44) keepsout/ready/go/stopto direct children of the root and refuses a path that already exists. The mailbox isresolve(root, "agent-a"), and a populated store is refused (refused populated mailbox). The suite covers all of these: forged marker, symlinked store, symlinked root/agent-a, and file/dangling-symlink at every signal path, each asserting the tree is byte-identical before and after (snapshot(...)). - Cleaned up.
measure'sfinally(:354) SIGKILLs any child that has not reported, awaits everydone, thenrmSync(root, { recursive: true, force: true }). After a full green run I checked/tmpforbench-lock-*/bench-base-*/bench-existing-*: none (the onlyflair-*dirs there belong to another reviewer). - Not in CI by accident. Both files are mode
100644(not executable), so the script cannot be swept up by a./…scan. The.mjsis not matched by the unit lane's file discovery (test/,test/unit,test/unit-isolated,packages/*/test). It reaches CI only through the plugin lane (test.yml:132, the isolated launcher), and the test invokes it with tiny, bounded parameters (--n=1 --rounds=1 --writes=1 --sweeps=1,--timeout), never the expensive defaultmain()(target 1500).
Numbered (non-blocking):
1. [plugins/openclaw-tps-mail/scripts/bench-mailbox-lock-contention.mjs:178-186] The watch role busy-spins. The span sampler loops while (!existsSync(F.stop)) with no await/pause, reading owner.json as fast as the CPU allows. On a single machine it competes with the writers and sweeper for cores, so it can inflate the very lock-wait percentiles being measured (Kern's lane). It is plausibly deliberate — a pause could miss short owner spans — but a short pause(0)/Atomics.wait yield would let the measurement run cleaner; if the spin is required, a sentence saying so would keep the next reader from "fixing" it.
Honesty note: on my first (un-sandboxed-HOME) run the launcher's HOME guard reported ~/.tps/connections/tps-anvil.json as changed — that is ambient activity from the live agents on this shared host, not the tests; rerunning with a throwaway HOME was clean.

Verdict: APPROVE — head f5da63747fe050e54cb2ba76b46e36f0c82fce90 (briefed head verified as the current head; reviewed on exactly this head, "#536 r3").
Kern, CTO review. Repo visibility checked before writing: gh api repos/tpsdev-ai/cli → visibility: public (2026-10-08). Author tps-anvil (MEMBER) — full verification path in ~/work/review-537-kern (agent built; every run sandboxed; all bench roots under /tmp).
My focus — the measurement measures what it claims (verified from source and by running it):
- Wait is inside the lock acquisition, not the whole write. A Bun plugin instruments the real
lib/mail-lock.jsat load —benchStartimmediately before the attempt loop, elapsed reported only at the twostep.donereturn points — so the reported wait spans acquisition attempts (collision polls included) up to grant. The anchors are exact source contracts (the start string must appear exactly twice, the finish regex exactly twice, the collision line present) and the bench refuses to run on drift ("mail-lock instrumentation contract changed") — it cannot silently measure nonsense. Whole-write latency is a separate timer around each individual create/transition/write call, and the output keeps them separate (writerLockWaitMsvswholeWriteLatencyMs); the test file pins that separation. - The sweep's hold is sampled honestly. The watch role polls the lock's
owner.jsonand records per-nonce spans; the parent filters spans by the sweeper's pid and validates non-zero observations. It is labeled what it is —sampledSweepOwnerSpanMs, with the header stating sampling may miss or split spans. In my run every sweep acquisition was observed (n=120 = 15 rounds × 8 sweeps), p50 ≈ 20.6ms. - Processes really contend. Real child processes (writers/sweeper/watcher) rendezvous via ready/go/stop files against the real
acquireMailLockSyncand real obligation writes; the parent validates each child's arithmetic (acquisitions === calls, collisions ≥ failed, writers must never hit the deadline, sweeps must remove exactly the seeded 200 with zero unreadable) — the timed work is verified work, not just timed. - The conclusion is supported by the control — with one nuance from my host. My independent runs (defaults, N=4): real sweep writer p99 42.8ms (p95 30.1, p50 3.6) vs
--holder=0p99 23.5ms (holder's own sampled spans 0.13–0.26ms — genuinely near-zero), N=1 baseline p99 23.4ms ≈ one sampled sweep hold + quantization. So: a near-zero holder still costs ~23.5ms p99 — that component is pure poll-cadence/queueing (≈ one 25ms poll), which confirms the PR's central finding thatacquireMailLockSync's 25ms poll interval, not the sweep's hold, is the dominant wait source. The nuance: on my host the real-sweep tail is ~1.8× the zero-holder tail, i.e. the sweep's ~20–26ms hold still adds a visible p99 component (≈ one hold when a writer queues behind a sweep). "Almost the same numbers" is directionally right (the cadence component exists with no holder at all) but the hold is not tail-free; the recommended poll-cadence follow-up is well-supported by the zero-holder baseline, and a hold-side improvement would still shave the tail. My numbers alongside the PR's 55ms/188ms (I did not reproduce N=16; disclosed).
Confinement (nothing can touch a real mailbox): children get an explicit allowlist env — HOME/TMPDIR/TMP/TEMP inside the bench root, inherited TPS_* dropped — and re-verify before any product import: root under a uid/mode-checked safeTempBase, name-locked to bench-lock-*, private (0700, own uid, realpath-stable), a parent marker binding token and ppid, F.dir === root, rendezvous paths confined and non-existent, and a private empty mailbox. The parent refuses --dir outright and SIGKILLs + removes every root in finally. The test file attacks exactly this (forged markers, symlinked roots, populated stores — all refused; 48/48 pass in the lane under the launcher's own HOME isolation). No real ~/.tps/mail exists on this host and nothing outside the bench roots was touched.
Lane hygiene: the script is wired into nothing — no workflow, launcher, or package.json reference — so it never runs in CI by accident; the test file is in the unit lane (deliberately, bounded: real-children e2e at N=1/1-round with 10–15s kill timeouts), 48/48 through the isolated launcher.
Findings (non-blocking):
- [observation] The
--holdercomparison on this host: real-sweep p99 42.8ms vs holder-0 p99 23.5ms — cadence-dominated, but the sweep's ~21–26ms sampled hold is a real tail contributor. Worth keeping both numbers in the follow-up's before/after. - [info] The watch role busy-spins its sampling loop (no pause) — deliberate for span resolution, bench-only, bounded lifetime; noted for anyone porting it.
Not evaluated: CI lanes (merge-gating is Flint's; note this PR adds a test file to the unit lane by design — I characterize no lane status). No launchd code exists in or was run for this PR; no processes or temp roots left behind (parent cleans up; verified); production (9926/9925) untouched.
Closes #536.
What this is
plugins/openclaw-tps-mail/scripts/bench-mailbox-lock-contention.mjsruns the retention sweep and obligation writers in separate processes against a parent-created temporary mailbox. It measures time insideacquireMailLockSyncseparately from each create, transition and write call. Sweep hold estimates are sampled owner-file spans; sampling can miss acquisitions or split spans.--holder=<ms>replaces the sweep with a lock holder. Roles start behind a barrier, report successful acquisitions and unsuccessful lock attempts, and require the creating parent's marker. Outputs stay inside that directory. Failed children, incomplete samples, failed writer acquisitions, incomplete sweeps and missing sweep observations fail the run before percentiles are printed. Busy sweep and holder attempts are counted and retried until success or child timeout.Numbers
The JSON report separates writer acquisition time, whole-write latency, successful sweep/holder call latency, iteration latency including retries and sampled owner-file spans, with acquisition and collision counts. Each sweep must remove its seeded obligations and receipts.
Decision
This benchmark does not establish that poll cadence dominates writer wait or that narrowing the sweep would leave wait unchanged. No poll-cadence or sweep change is made here.
