Closes #516.

Sandboxed agent launch (tps agent start under nono) now provides:

  • Config snapshot. The parent reads --config once into a private snapshot and writes its resolved workspace into that snapshot; parsing, re-exec and the read-file grant use the snapshot path. The parent removes the snapshot on normal exit and on SIGINT, SIGTERM and SIGHUP; a forced termination (for example SIGKILL) leaves it in place under ~/.tps/launch/ (follow-up: sweep stale snapshots at the next launch).
  • Worktree preparation before confinement. For a selected runtime, when a base repository exists and the workspace is absent, the parent creates the worktree with --no-checkout, core.hooksPath=/dev/null and core.fsmonitor=false. The sandboxed child checks out the newly created worktree before starting the runtime. The launch grants read of the worktree's git common directory and write of its git directory. Cleanup is attempted only after this launch created a worktree.
  • Parsed sandbox flags. Launch control reads parsed arguments before --; runtime dispatch uses the verified launcher release.

Repository inspection and Git operation failures raise WorktreeLifecycleError. Setup failure stops launch before nono starts; checkout and cleanup failures are reported. Only a confirmed absent candidate or a plain directory without a .git entry counts as no base (changed:false). Setup and cleanup reject a base candidate’s symlink .git marker and base metadata Git cannot resolve. System and global Git config entry points are disabled; local includes remain enabled.

Worktree metadata binding. nono metadata grants and additional Codex metadata directories derived from the registry binding come from the trusted base repository (~/ops/tps or the workspace's sibling tps), resolved through symlinks. A workspace that the trusted base's own worktree registry lists is tps-managed: its .git file and commondir must match that base, or the launch is refused with a named WorktreeLifecycleError before any grant is computed. Registry ownership is decided from that registry alone: a registered workspace is refused when its .git marker is missing, is a directory, or the workspace directory is absent. A workspace with an unregistered regular .git file receives no nono metadata grants or additional binding-derived Codex directories; launch remains subject to grant and profile checks. With a trusted base, it uses the workspace as its working directory; explicit launch and profile grants that contain, equal or lie inside the base working tree are refused, except exact canonical matches to the private config snapshot in readFiles, the registered binding's gitCommonDir in read, and its gitDir in allow. Grants inherited from nono's built-in policy are not evaluated, so a trusted base inside a location that policy can read is not covered by this check (cli#662). A symlink .git marker is refused, and a .git file the agent can write never widens what nono or Codex grants. Sandboxed Codex receives the registry binding retained at setup through the launcher release socket.

Tests in packages/cli/test/sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts (built-CLI release regressions on c41a2ce: 42 pass / 0 fail, real-nono cases included):

  • Config cases check the snapshot pathname, file read grant, and workspace resolution against the original config directory.
  • Worktree cases check deferred checkout, cleanup after launch, setup refusal, existing worktree preservation, and parent-side filter and hook markers. Real-Git cases check repository classification and setup and cleanup errors; setup error cases check that nono never starts.
  • Flag cases exercise parsed message and wrapped-command arguments and validate launcher-owned flags.
  • Real-nono cases check worktree-file access and base-file denial at the selected fixture location, custom config loading, and child checkout. An unrelated worktree launched from a base cwd reads its own worktree file and is denied read and write of a base file. They require a supported nono reachable by absolute path; the Docker attested lane selects this file.

The cli#483 fixture checks the carried runtime by position and the presence of --config.

Round 4 verification — measured on 377e829b:

  • Root bun run build passes.
  • bun run lint:ci and node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check pass.

Mutation coverage: the fsmonitor pin has no independent mutation coverage recorded here.

nono: the Docker attested lane mounts the pinned nono for the real-nono cases.

Round 4 (9e8cb35, 377e829, 7e42faf)

  • A base candidate’s .git that is a broken pointer, a symlink, unreadable, or anything Git refuses to resolve is a WorktreeLifecycleError for setup and cleanup. Only a confirmed absent path or a plain directory with no .git entry is "no base" (real-Git tests for both).
  • Wording: the parent creates a worktree when a base repository exists and the workspace is absent, and the child checks out the newly created worktree before starting the runtime.
  • The real-nono cases now run on macOS as well as in the Linux attested lane. nono's default policy on macOS grants read on /private/var and /tmp, so a fixture HOME under /var/tmp overlapped nono's own state root there. The fixture base is now chosen by asking real nono which candidate its policy and the fixed launcher grants leave ungranted (/Users/Shared on macOS, /var/tmp on Linux), and the fixture grants the checkout and interpreter directories as exact paths on macOS (the fixed system roots it also grants are ancestor grants; on the Linux lane the interpreter's directory sits under the already-shared /usr grant).

Measured on 7e42faf, macOS, nono 0.74.0: sandboxed-launch-516 28/0/0 (the three real-nono cases included), runtime-dir-credential-overlap 31/0, launcher-grants 15/0; lint clean.

Linux lane fix (5fd75dd)

The fixture-base chooser's nono why --json query answered with empty output on the pinned Linux nono in the attested Docker lane (exit 0, nothing on stdout), so the three real-nono cases failed there on 7e42faf. The chooser accepts a candidate after an unsandboxed nonce read succeeds and the sandboxed read returns a permission error. A sandboxed nonce read rejects the candidate; other failures are reported as probe failures. Measured on 5fd75dd, macOS, nono 0.74.0: /var/tmp and /Volumes refused, /Users/Shared chosen; sandboxed-launch-516 28/0/0, launcher-grants 17/0 (one case per verdict, each failing when its branch is removed), runtime-dir-credential-overlap 31/0; lint clean. The Linux lane is the confirmation for /var/tmp.

857037c: the real-nono fixture now grants the checkout root (where node_modules is hoisted) rather than packages/. In the Linux lane on 5fd75dd the sandboxed CLI could not resolve /app/node_modules/meow; macOS had passed only because nono's default macOS policy grants read on /Volumes. On 857037c, macOS: sandboxed-launch-516 28/0/0; lint clean. The Linux lane confirms.

Round 5 (22cebd1)

  • The parent removes any inherited TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING before launch and sets it only after it created the worktree; a launch with the marker pre-set over an existing branch worktree asserts the child's environment carries none.
  • onStop treats only ENOENT as absence; any other probe failure (EACCES, ENOTDIR) raises WorktreeLifecycleError. A test whose workspace parent is a regular file (ENOTDIR on every uid) asserts the error.
  • The real-nono base-denial case reads a granted file inside the worktree and reports a distinct denial marker for an untracked base-repository file in one run.
  • Comments corrected to describe the probe trigger, the Linux /usr grant, which candidates are measured, a nonzero probe, and the config directory's effective access.

Measured on 22cebd1 (main 222cf44): root bun run build clean; cd packages/cli && bun run lint:ci exit 0; node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check passes; runtime-tier-launch, launcher-grants, sandbox-launch-control, runtime-dir-credential-overlap, profile-grant-credential-policy, runtime-attested-launch 442 pass / 0 fail; sandboxed-launch-516 27 pass / 3 skip / 0 fail on 22cebd1 and again on b7e3ec2, whose only change is a line in the host-skipped real-nono probe. The three real-nono cases run in the Docker attested lane.

Round 6 (7a703fc)

  • A new worktree launch grants read of the worktree's git common directory (commondir) and write of its git directory. An untracked file there is denied in the same real-nono sandbox that reads a file inside the worktree.
  • The base-denial case builds its profile and grants through the same functions the launch uses (agentLaunchGrants + buildNonoArgs), not a separate test profile.
  • Probe wording states what is observed: a nonzero exit with no output is reported as such, not as nono refusing to start.
  • macOS fixture text qualifies the fixed system roots that are ancestor grants.

Measured on 7a703fc (main 766f5f3): root bun run build clean; cd packages/cli && bun run lint:ci exit 0; node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check passes; sandboxed-launch-516 30 pass / 0 fail with nono 0.74.0 (real-nono cases included), launcher-grants 17/0, sandbox-launch-control 139/0, runtime-dir-credential-overlap 31/0, profile-grant-credential-policy 86/0, runtime-tier-launch 3/0, launch-attestation 36/0, nono 31/0, nono-profiles 13/0, nono-profiles-install 5/0, office-connect-announce 16/0, office-connect-announce-recovery 2/0, runtime-attested-launch 166/0; 575 pass / 0 fail combined. cbcda23 changes comments only: on cbcda23, bun run build, bun run lint:ci, the changelog check, sandboxed-launch-516 (30/0) and launcher-grants (17/0) were re-run clean; the other counts above were not re-run. The Docker attested lane was not run on this host; the real-nono cases above ran locally against nono 0.74.0.

Mutation: re-adding the base repository to the read grants makes the real-nono case fail with base-untracked where the denial marker is expected; restored, 30/0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Sandboxed agent launches use a private configuration snapshot and an absolute workspace path.
    • Worktree setup and checkout are coordinated with sandbox startup, and cleanup is limited to worktrees created by that launch.
    • Pending workspaces that do not match the requested workspace are rejected before checkout.
    • Sandbox flags inside wrapped commands no longer interfere with launch checks, and launches requiring sandboxing are refused when confinement cannot be verified.
    • Improved handling and reporting of worktree setup, validation, and cleanup failures.
    • The nono profile gate builds and launches the agent from the workspace package.

Round 12 (c41a2ce)

  • An unregistered worktree launched with its cwd in the trusted base gets the workspace as its working directory; a real-nono case reads the worktree file and is denied read and write of a base file.
  • Registry ownership is decided from the trusted base's registry without requiring the marker to exist or be a file. A registered workspace with a missing or directory marker is refused on the default launch path, and registry inspection failures are named WorktreeLifecycleError.

Measured on c41a2ce: root bun run build clean; cd packages/cli && bun run lint:ci exit 0; node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check passes; sandboxed-launch-516 42 pass / 0 fail (real-nono cases included, nono 0.74.0), agent-launch-options 25 pass / 0 fail, agent-workspace 3/0, launcher-grants 17/0, sandbox-launch-control 139/0; check-nono-profiles.sh and check-custom-nono-profile.ts pass.

Mutations: removing the unregistered-workspace cwd grant fails the cwd test; removing the registered missing-marker refusal fails that test; rethrowing the raw registry read error fails the named-error test.

Round 13 (a749691)

  • A registered worktree whose whole workspace directory is absent is refused with a named WorktreeLifecycleError before any grant is computed; an absent unregistered path keeps the caller's cwd policy. Both cases go through agentLaunchOptions with real Git and the real registry file.

Measured on a749691 (main 8bdf648): root bun run build clean; cd packages/cli && bun run lint:ci exit 0; node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check passes; agent-launch-options 27 pass / 0 fail; 22 test files importing the lifecycle, nono, or the agent command: 600 pass / 10 skip / 0 fail (the skips are the 7 real-nono cases and 3 real-Flair cases); sandboxed-launch-516 35 pass / 7 skip / 0 fail.

Mutation: restoring the early kind: "none" return makes the missing-directory case fail with the grant computation's own error instead of the named ownership error; restored, 27/0.

The Docker attested lane was not run on this machine: there is no pinned nono binary and no Rust toolchain to build one, and the local nono 0.17.1 is below the 0.70.0 floor, so the real-nono cases skip.

Existing-worktree regression

Launch and setup use the trusted base’s registry lookup; cleanup of launch-created worktrees uses the retained setup binding. Real-Git cases explicitly write absolute registry gitdirs, relative registry gitdirs with extensions.relativeworktrees=true and repository format >= 1, and workspace .git pointers, assert existing-worktree metadata, and remove a worktree created by onStart. Registry inspection rejects unreadable, unresolvable or empty entries with WorktreeLifecycleError.

Measured on 5fee766: agent-launch-options 38 pass / 0 fail; agent-workspace 4 pass / 0 fail; package bun run build, root bun run lint:ci, and node scripts/changelog-fragments.mjs check exit 0. Reverting either onStart or onStop to git worktree list fails the relative-registry cases.

On 6844eab, the real-Git, built-CLI Codex metadata cases pass (4 pass / 0 fail): registered worktree, unregistered .git pointer, post-setup rewrite, and no trusted base.

On 7bbcc3e, the relative-workspace snapshot regressions pass (2 pass / 0 fail); resolving against the snapshot directory makes both fail.

Real-nono launch teardown checks termination of the released child and launcher in finally, using the release PID or the launcher process group without a release line. Unconfirmed termination fails the case.

On f40a38e, package bun run build and root bun run lint:ci exit 0.

…tup outside the sandbox, scan only tps's own flags (cli#516)

- The attested re-exec carried --id but dropped --config, so `tps agent start
  --config <file>` ran the default config under nono. Carry it, and grant read
  of the directory it was read from.
- Worktree setup/cleanup ran inside the sandbox, where the base repository's
  metadata is not granted, so it quietly did nothing. The parent now runs the
  hooks before entering and after leaving the sandbox; the sandboxed child skips
  them. A failure is a named WorktreeLifecycleError.
- The sandbox-flag scan read every argv token, so `--sandbox <word>` inside a
  message or a wrapped command was refused as an invalid flag. Scan the parsed
  argument list, which inserts -- before a wrapped payload.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately summarizes the main changes: preserving --config through attested re-execution, moving worktree setup outside the sandbox, and limiting argument scanning to tps-owned arguments. It is specific and related to the changeset, although it is somewhat long.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #516 requires three coding behaviors. The PR preserves --config through attested re-exec by using a config snapshot and grants that snapshot for reading. It performs worktree setup outside confinement, defers checkout to the child, grants required Git metadata, and cleans up only worktrees created by the launch. ownFlag stops flag scanning at --. sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts covers all three behaviors, including real-nono configuration, checkout, and access-denial cases. The attested workflow selects the suite.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The lifecycle validation, grant-boundary checks, attestation binding, Codex directory changes, test helpers, workflow updates, and changelog entries support issue #516 implementation or its automated validation. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Adjudication (Gauge) on 04baff63: NOT READY. Verdict below, unedited apart from local paths removed. Anvil takes the fix round.

VERDICT: NOT READY on 04baff63. This is a first pass, so there is no previous verdict to clear. The strongest case for readiness is that the absolute-path config handoff and fresh-worktree tests exercise the intended parent flow. The following gaps still prevent approval.

Blockers

  1. Relative --config paths do not survive the re-exec correctly. The parent passes configPath unchanged, grants dirname(configPath), and launches nono with --workdir config.workspace ([agent.ts], [nono.ts]). A relative path can resolve to a different file, or no file, in the child. Resolve the config to one absolute file path before loading it, carry that same path, and test a relative path with a different workspace directory.

  2. Worktree creation can execute Git-controlled code outside the sandbox. The parent now calls git worktree add before nono ([agent.ts], [agent-lifecycle.ts]). Git’s installed documentation says that operation runs post-checkout unless checkout is suppressed (githooks.5). Protect this parent operation from executable hooks and Git configuration, or run it in a credential-free restricted helper. Add a marker-hook test proving no parent-side execution.

  3. Cleanup can delete a worktree this launch did not create. onStart returns changed: false for an existing worktree, but the new finally calls onStop anyway; onStop uses git worktree remove --force ([agent-lifecycle.ts], [agent.ts]). Retain the start result and clean up only a worktree created by this launch. Test an existing worktree through a refused launch.

  4. The real-nono seam is untested for this behavior. The new config test uses a fake that logs arguments and never starts the child ([sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts]). Its real-nono case tests base-repository visibility, not config handoff or lifecycle. The CI profile gate does not run this test file, and the pinned-nono attested service selects other files ([test.yml], [docker-compose.yml]). Add an end-to-end case that observes the child using the custom config, and run it in the pinned-nono lane with a non-skip assertion.

  5. The sandbox flag claim still includes a payload token. parseCliArgs inserts -- before a wrapped payload, but the --sandboxed attestation gate searches the entire resulting array with .includes() ([cli-args.cjs], [tps.ts], [nono.ts]). A message or wrapped command containing --sandboxed is still refused as a launch flag. Check own flags only before the separator, while retaining refusal of an actual, unattested --sandboxed flag.

Changed-text sweep

The false or over-broad added statements are:

  • “--config <file> now uses that file” and the child “can re-read” it: false for relative paths ([changelog], [test header], [PR body]).
  • “Scans only tps’s own arguments”: over-broad for --sandboxed in a payload ([changelog], [test header]).
  • The child “cannot reach the base repository’s metadata”: over-broad when the new config-directory read grant covers that repository ([agent.ts], [test header]).
  • “A failure throws” a named error: over-broad because a missing base repository still returns an unchanged result and launch proceeds ([PR body], [agent-lifecycle.ts]). State that distinction or make a required managed worktree fail closed.
  • “Each fails on main” conflicts with the PR body’s own report of a passing and a skipped case; the test-file introduction repeats the overclaim ([PR body], [test introduction]).
  • “The child can actually re-read it” is presented as a conclusion from a fake that only logs argv ([sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts]).
  • The statement that CI’s pinned-nono jobs run the new real-nono case is false under the current job selection ([PR body], [test comment], [docker-compose.yml]).

Follow-up: Decide whether a missing base repository is an optional no-op or a launch refusal for a configured managed workspace; the current API does not express that intent. The added assertions are structurally capable of failing for their targeted mutations, but I could not independently execute tests or mutations in this read-only workspace.

Sweep of every sentence this PR adds or changes (git diff origin/main...HEAD), checked against the code at c42fb6b. Call per line: KEEP or FIXED.

Changed-text fixes applied this round

  • "A failure throws a named WorktreeLifecycleError" (PR body, onStart doc) — FIXED: only a failed git operation throws; a workspace with no base repository is a changed:false no-op. Statement now says that.
  • "each fails on main on the behaviour assertion" (test header) — FIXED: deleted. Measured origin/main sources with this file give 9 fail / 3 pass / 2 skip; the invalid-value, existing-worktree and unattested---sandboxed cases already hold on main, so the blanket claim was false.
  • "--config <file> now uses that file" (changelog, PR body) — FIXED: "loads the file it names, resolved to one absolute path before reading it".
  • "scans only tps's own arguments" (changelog, test header) — FIXED: "stops at the -- before a message or wrapped command" / "reads the arguments before a wrapped payload".
  • "the sandboxed child cannot reach the base repository's metadata" (agent.ts, tps.ts, test header) — FIXED: "is not granted write to the base repository's worktree metadata" (the config-directory read grant can cover the base repo when a config lives there; only the write is never granted).
  • "The child can actually re-read it" (test comment) — FIXED: "is granted read of the directory" (asserted by the argv; the re-read itself is asserted end to end in the real-nono case).
  • "CI's pinned-nono jobs run the new real-nono case" (PR body) — FIXED: the Docker attested lane now selects the file and asserts (non-skip) when the pinned nono is mounted.

Kept (checked true on every branch)

  • changelog: "resolves the path once and carries it through the attested re-exec" — true (resolvePathMod before load; relaunch.push("--config", configPath)); "(1)" relative-path test asserts it.
  • changelog: "worktree setup and cleanup run in the parent where the base repository's metadata is writable instead of silently doing nothing" — true; the parent is unsandboxed and the old child returned base repo not found.
  • changelog: "a --sandbox <word> inside one is no longer refused as a flag" — true; (3) asserts it.
  • agent.ts: "resolve to one absolute file path BEFORE any read" — true.
  • agent.ts: "Read the toolchain roots plus the directory the config was read from … Read-only" — true (read: grant only).
  • agent.ts: "Remove only a worktree this launch created … an existing worktree, or a workspace that is not one, survives" — true (worktreeCreated guard); (2) existing-worktree case asserts it.
  • agent-lifecycle: "the message names the operation that failed" — true (listing / setup / cleanup each named).
  • agent-lifecycle: "A workspace with no base repository is left untouched and reported as changed:false; only a failed git operation throws" — true.
  • agent-lifecycle: "git worktree add runs post-checkout … disables the repository's hooks for this checkout" — true; (2) marker-hook case asserts the hook did not run.
  • test title "a post-checkout hook in the base repository never runs during parent-side setup" — true (marker absent while the worktree was created).
  • test title "an existing worktree survives the launch" — true.
  • test title "an actual, unattested --sandboxed flag is still refused" — true (gate refusal present).
  • test header "(3) … a --sandbox <word> or --sandboxed inside a message or wrapped command is not a flag, while tps's own such flag is still refused" — true; six cases assert the pair.
  • real-nono comment "a sandboxed child is not granted write to the base repository's worktree metadata, so it cannot run git worktree against it" — true.
  • NODE comment "bun inside a nono sandbox sees an empty environment, so the locator does not reach a bun child" — the measurement recorded in Dockerfile.test.

No new over-broad guarantee word survives unchecked: the remaining hits of only/never/every/always/exactly/cannot/all/none/any in added lines are per-branch true (checked above) or describe the test's own setup.

Adjudication (Gauge) on c42fb6bc: NOT READY. The verdict is below, unedited apart from local paths removed.

Direction for round 3: the parent creates the worktree with --no-checkout, so no checkout-time filter can run outside the sandbox, and its git invocations also pin core.hooksPath and core.fsmonitor off. The checkout itself happens inside nono, as the sandboxed child's first step or a sandboxed helper. A real-Git test plants a smudge-filter marker and an fsmonitor marker in the base repository's local config and proves neither runs in the parent. Anvil takes round 3.

VERDICT: NOT READY on c42fb6bc. The strongest case for readiness is that the relative-config, existing-worktree, hook, and real-nono test paths are now present. The parent-side Git boundary still fails the control the PR claims.

Blockers

  1. Worktree creation can still run repository-configured code outside nono. The parent disables post-checkout, but deliberately retains the base repository’s local config and performs a normal checkout ([agent-lifecycle.ts], [agent-lifecycle.ts]). Git’s installed documentation says checkout runs configured smudge filters (gitattributes.5); worktree add checks out by default (git-worktree.1). The marker-hook test covers hooks only. Fix: run checkout in a credential-free restricted helper, or otherwise prevent all repository-configured executables from running in the parent. Add a real-Git smudge-filter marker test.

  2. Git probe failures are treated as “no base repository.” isGitRepo turns any failed rev-parse into false; onStart then returns changed:false, allowing launch to proceed ([agent-lifecycle.ts], [agent-lifecycle.ts], [agent.ts]). The cleanup probe can likewise silently skip removal. Fix: distinguish a confirmed absent/non-repository candidate from a failed probe of an existing managed repository; throw WorktreeLifecycleError for the latter. Test that failure with real Git and assert that nono never starts.

  3. The changed-text sweep found these false or over-broad statements. Narrow them in the same round:

    • “Clean git environment” and “must not execute repository-controlled code” omit the executable local-config path above ([PR body], [agent-lifecycle.ts]).
    • “A failed git operation … stops the launch before the sandbox” is false for a failed probe, and cleanup happens after the sandbox. The onStart comment likewise overstates which Git failures throw ([PR body], [agent-lifecycle.ts]).
    • The unqualified parent-worktree wording should say it applies to selected runtimes when a base repository is found; no-base remains an explicit no-op ([changelog], [test introduction]).
    • “The child re-reads the same file” promises file identity; the code carries the same absolute pathname and reopens it. A replaced file or symlink can change its target ([PR body], [agent.ts]).
    • “tps’s own such flag is still refused” needs “invalid --sandbox value or unattested --sandboxed”; valid or attested flags are allowed. “When nono is installed” needs the supported, loadable nono qualification ([test introduction]).

Follow-ups and verification limit

The PR explicitly defines a missing base repository as a no-op; that deferred policy is a follow-up, not a blocker ([PR body]). Concurrent replacement of a newly created worktree also needs an ownership check beyond the current changed boolean.

The previous relative-path and existing-worktree blockers have direct code and test coverage ([agent.ts], [test], [test]). The real parser, config file, Git, and pinned-nono boundaries have test paths; the Git tests miss the executable-filter and failed-probe cases ([docker-compose.yml], [test]). I inspected the claimed mutations and their assertions, but could not independently run them: this read-only checkout lacks packages/cli/dist/bin/tps.js. git diff --check origin/main...HEAD passed.

Sweep of every sentence this PR adds or changes (git diff origin/main...HEAD), checked against the code at ef292b0. Call per line: KEEP or FIXED.

Fixed this round (verdict item 3)

  • "must not execute repository-controlled code" and "gitEnv()'s clean environment" (onStart comment) — FIXED: the comment now names the three executables git worktree add would run (post-checkout, the configured fsmonitor, a configured smudge filter), and which of them each mechanism stops.
  • "A failed git operation … stops the launch before the sandbox" (PR body, onStart doc) — FIXED: the WorktreeLifecycleError doc says only a failed git operation raises it and a workspace with no base repository is reported as changed:false; the PR body says the setup failure stops the launch before the sandbox, while a checkout or cleanup failure is reported after the sandbox has stopped.
  • "Clean git environment" (PR body) — FIXED: the body now says "no repository-configured filter or hook runs outside the sandbox".
  • "The child re-reads the same file" (PR body, agent.ts comment) — FIXED: the code carries one absolute pathname and reopens it; both now say so.
  • Unqualified parent-worktree wording (changelog, test introduction) — FIXED: the changelog says "For a selected runtime whose workspace has a base repository"; the test introduction adds "A base repository that is merely absent is an explicit no-op".
  • "tps's own such flag is still refused" / "when nono is installed" (test introduction) — FIXED: "an invalid --sandbox value tps owns, or an unattested --sandboxed tps owns, is still refused"; "when a supported, loadable nono is in play".
  • The claim that the sandboxed child cannot reach the base repository's metadata — FIXED: the child is granted read of the base repository and write of its own worktree's git directory; no added line claims otherwise.

Kept (checked true on every branch)

  • changelog: "resolves the path once and carries it through the attested re-exec" — true (resolvePathMod before the load; relaunch.push("--config", configPath)).
  • changelog: "the parent creates the worktree with the checkout suppressed and the hook path and fsmonitor disabled, and the sandboxed child checks it out inside the sandbox" — true for a selected runtime whose workspace has a base repository (onStart pins both and passes --no-checkout; tps.ts checks out only when TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING names that workspace).
  • changelog: "the sandbox-flag scan stops at the -- before a message or wrapped command" — true (ownFlag; six cases assert the pair).
  • agent-lifecycle: "Only an absent path or a path git reports as outside any work tree counts as 'no base'" — true (probeRepo); the failed-probe case and the cleanup-probe case assert that a failed probe of an existing repository throws instead.
  • agent-lifecycle: "Present only when this call created the worktree and deferred its checkout" — true (gitDir/baseRepo are set only on the defer branch, after a created worktree).
  • agent-lifecycle: "Remove ONLY a worktree this launch created" — true (worktreeCreated; the sandboxed child never sets it).
  • agent.ts: "Read-only, and usually the already-granted agent dir" — true (it is a read: grant).
  • agent.ts: "the two grants the checkout needs … are added and validated here, once the worktree exists to name them" — true (approval is re-run with them and refuses; the created worktree is removed first).
  • tps.ts: "where a repository-configured filter or hook is confined" — true: the checkout runs inside nono.
  • test titles — each asserted: "a smudge filter and an fsmonitor hook from the base repository do not run during parent-side setup" (both markers absent), "an existing worktree survives the launch" (contents and registration), "a failed probe of an existing base repository stops the launch, and nono never starts" (fakeNonoRuns empty), "a post-checkout hook in the base repository never runs during parent-side setup" (marker absent).

Not exercised by a test (reported, not claimed)

  • core.fsmonitor=false: dropping the pin changes no case — the suppressed checkout is what keeps the hook from running. The pin stays because the direction names it; no added sentence claims a test covers it.

…e nono's own grants (cli#516)

The three real-nono cases now prove the same things on macOS as on Linux.
Before, on macOS they failed for a fixture reason, not a product one: nono
applies its built-in groups to every profile, and system_read_macos grants
read on /private/var, /tmp and /Volumes, so a fixture HOME under /var/tmp sat
inside a nono grant. nono then refused to start (the grant overlaps its state
root HOME/.nono), and the launcher refused the profile because nono reported
read access to the fixture HOME's credential files: correct refusals for a
HOME that is genuinely readable.

- realNonoHomeBase() picks a fixture base outside every launcher grant AND
  outside every path nono's built-in policy grants, checked with
  `nono why --profile default`, never assumed. On macOS that is /Users/Shared;
  on Linux /var/tmp, as before. When no candidate qualifies it throws, naming
  each candidate and the grant that rules it out.
- The fixture profile grants the repo checkout and the interpreter directory
  exactly, not every ancestor: a read grant is recursive, and with bun under
  ~/.bun the ancestors were /Users and the operator's whole home.
- The launcher cases stop waiting when the launcher exits and fail with its
  output, so a refusal is named instead of surfacing as a 45 s timeout.

…parsing `nono why` (cli#516)

The real-nono cli#516 cases again run on every nono build that can run
them at all. The base chooser no longer depends on the output of
`nono why --profile default`, which the pinned Linux nono answered with
exit 0 and no output, failing all three cases in the attested lane.

For each candidate base, probeNonoBuiltinRead() makes a scratch dir there
with a fixture-like HOME and a file holding a random nonce, and runs real
nono under a profile that only extends nono's `default` (the same `run`
shape the real-nono cases already use) on
`sh -c 'cat <file> || echo <marker>'`:
- the marker, exit 0: the read was denied, so the base is accepted;
- the nonce, exit 0: the default policy grants read there, so it is rejected;
- non-zero with no output: nono refused to start, so it is rejected and
  nono's stderr is quoted (on macOS, a default group overlapping the state
  root HOME/.nono);
- anything else throws: an unknown answer is never "not granted".
Neither the nonce nor the whole marker is in nono's argv. The launcher-grant
check and the error naming every rejected candidate are unchanged.

The unit tests drive a fake nono that runs the probe's own payload, one
case each for granted, denied, refuses-to-start and unknown output, and
each fails when its branch is removed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…_modules is hoisted

The grant was packages/, so inside the Linux lane's sandbox the CLI could not
resolve its hoisted dependencies (/app/node_modules). macOS passed only because
nono's default macOS policy already grants read on /Volumes.

Adjudication (Gauge) on 857037c4: NOT READY. Verdict below, unedited apart from local paths removed. Anvil takes round 5.

Verdict: NOT READY — PR #648 at 857037c4

The previous Linux module-resolution blocker has a correctly targeted code fix: the fixture now grants the checkout root, and the Docker image installs dependencies under that root ([fixture], [Dockerfile]). The strongest case for READY is that fix plus the reported macOS real-nono pass. I could not verify a successful Linux lane on this head from the supplied local evidence.

Blockers

  1. An inherited environment variable can check out an existing worktree. When setup creates no worktree, the parent passes process.env unchanged; the child trusts TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING if its path matches and runs git checkout --detach ([parent], [child]). This contradicts the changed comment that the marker is absent for an existing worktree. Fix: remove the inherited marker before launch, set it only after successful creation, and test an existing branch worktree with a pre-set marker.

  2. Cleanup can silently report success on a permission failure. onStop treats existsSync(workspace) === false as absence ([agent-lifecycle.ts]). I measured existsSync returning false where lstatSync reports EACCES; that path returns changed:false instead of the claimed cleanup error. Fix: use a probe that treats only ENOENT as absent, and add a real-file permission test.

  3. The real-nono base-denial assertion can pass without demonstrating denial. It accepts any output other than "true" from a separate git invocation, including a failed nono start or failed Git command ([test]). Its changed comment calls an empty result a denial. Fix: require one successful real-nono invocation to read a granted control file and report a distinct denial for the base file.

  4. Changed text overstates the implementation. Correct these sentences in the same pass:

    • The PR body says the probe runs “on every build”; it runs when the real-nono test first uses the fixture ([PR body], [test]).
    • “Without ancestors” is false for the interpreter on Linux: the fixture also grants /usr ([PR body], [test comment]).
    • “Each candidate is measured with real nono” is false for unwritable or launcher-covered candidates; “outside every path” exceeds what one scratch-file probe proves ([helper]).
    • A nonzero probe with empty stdout is classified as a refusal, but its status alone cannot establish that nono refused to start ([helper]).
    • The new config-directory grant uses read access, but calling the directory “Read-only” overstates effective access when the agent directory is also granted writable access ([agent.ts]).

Follow-ups and verification limits

The relevant seams have real-component coverage in the suite: real config files and the built CLI, real Git repositories, and real nono profiles and launches. The inherited-marker and permission-failure paths need the tests named above. The claimed probe-branch mutations are structurally represented by distinct tests; I could not rerun mutations or the suite in this read-only checkout, which has no built CLI artifact. The PR body discloses that the fsmonitor pin has no independent mutation coverage. A current-head Linux attested result would settle the remaining uncertainty behind “The Linux lane confirms” ([PR body]).

…obe (cli#516)

- The parent removes any inherited TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING before launch and
  sets it only after it created the worktree, so a child never checks out
  an existing worktree named by a stale value.
- onStop treats only ENOENT as absent; any other probe failure (EACCES,
  ENOTDIR) raises WorktreeLifecycleError instead of changed:false.
- The real-nono base-denial case reads a granted control file and reports
  a distinct denial marker for the base file in one run.
- Comments narrowed to what each branch guarantees.

Sweep (round 5, 22cebd1) of every sentence this round adds or changes, checked against the code. Call: KEEP or FIXED.

Fixed this round (verdict item 4)

  • "The chooser now uses a behavioural probe on every build" (PR body) — FIXED: "the first time a real-nono case resolves its fixture", which is when the fixture helper runs.
  • "grants the repository and interpreter directories exactly, without ancestors" (PR body; seedRealNonoProfiles comment) — FIXED: scoped to macOS, and the Linux lane's shared /usr (an ancestor of the interpreter's directory) is named.
  • "Each candidate is measured with real nono" (launcher-grants.ts) — FIXED: "A candidate is probed only once it is a writable directory outside the launcher's grants".
  • "outside every path nono's own built-in policy grants" (helper doc + thrown message) — FIXED: "where nono's built-in policy denies a scratch file under it", which is what one probe shows.
  • "nono refused to start" for a non-zero probe with empty stdout (helper) — FIXED: "refused" — nono did not run the command; "a status alone cannot establish that nono started, so this is never read as 'granted'".
  • "Read-only, and usually the already-granted agent dir" (agent.ts) — FIXED: "This adds read access to that directory; when it is the agent dir, the allow grant below also makes it writable".

Kept (checked true on every branch)

  • agent.ts: "The child checks the worktree out only when THIS launch created it … set it only after a worktree was actually created, so an inherited value never names someone else's worktree" — true: the env drops the key then re-adds it only when worktreeCreated; the child also checks that the marker names its own workspace.
  • agent-lifecycle.ts: "only ENOENT counts as absent … a failed probe is never read as 'nothing there'" — true: lstat; ENOENT returns false, any other error is thrown as WorktreeLifecycleError.
  • Test "an inherited TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING does not check an existing worktree out" — asserted: the sandboxed child's environment carries CHILD_MARKER=absent, and the existing worktree is unchanged and still on its branch.
  • Test comment "The child checks the worktree out only when it inherits this marker (bin/tps.ts)" — true against bin/tps.ts.
  • Test "cleanup reports a workspace probe failure, not absence, when the path cannot be probed" — asserted: a child process (given a HOME whose base repository resolves) reports THREW:WorktreeLifecycleError.
  • Test comment "the workspace's parent is a regular file, so lstat … fails with ENOTDIR on every uid (root included), where existsSync reports false" — true.
  • Test "the base repository is a repo outside the sandbox and unreadable inside it" — asserted: outside, git rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree is true; inside, one real-nono run reads the granted control file and reports the distinct denial marker for the base file.
  • Test comment "One successful real-nono run proves both …" — matches the single spawnSync and its two line assertions.
  • seedRealNonoProfiles comment (macOS: exact directories, not ancestors; Linux: /usr is granted) — matches the read set.

Not exercised by a host test (reported, not claimed)

  • The child's checkout branch (marker present) runs only under real nono; the Docker attested lane's "the sandboxed child checks the worktree out inside the sandbox" covers it. The host case added here asserts the parent does not hand an inherited marker to the child — the precondition for that checkout.

Guarantee-word scan (git diff -U0 origin/main...HEAD -- '*.md' .changelog docs plus the added comment/test-title lines) reviewed; every hit above is either narrowed or kept true.

r14 TEXT ONLY under Flint's ruling on B1: the base-tree check covers launch options and the profile's explicit grants; inherited built-in nono policy is cli#666. Check every changed sentence is true under that ruling and that no code or test logic changed since a749691.

r15: two CodeRabbit threads on 3c86324 — symlinked workspace directory check (accept only if every later decision uses the resolved path; tests incl. a symlink to the trusted base) and relative registry gitdir resolution in both registry checks (real-git test + mutation).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r16 per the 691025e pre-push verdict: the default attested child starts in the parent's resolved absolute workspace (TPS_AGENT_WORKSPACE handoff, as the selected-runtime path), with a symlinked-config + relative-workspace test and a real-nono where-it-starts case; regular .git file text scoped to treated-as-unregistered.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r17: CI red in Linux Docker (git 2.55) on the relative-gitdir case: onStart deferred-checkout on an existing relative-path worktree returns no gitDir; establish whether code, test or git-version layout is wrong and fix that side for both layouts.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r18: restore the existing-worktree gitDir assertion r17 removed; onStart/onStop membership uses the trusted registry binding (one helper, absolute + relative layouts, named error on unresolvable entries) instead of git worktree list; real-Git tests for both layouts incl. cleanup; PR body cleanup sentences scoped to the base candidate's .git.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r19: cleanup uses the binding retained from setup (a child-rewritten gitdir is a named failure, never a silent changed:false); onStop wraps realpath failures in WorktreeLifecycleError; the directory-marker test asserts the specific refusal so its mutation is established.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r20: the Codex runtime's git-metadata --add-dir comes from the trusted registry binding (retained at setup), never from the agent-writable .git file; tests for registered, unregistered-pointing-elsewhere and rewritten-after-setup; body claims then hold for nono and Codex.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
r21: relative registry paths are honoured only when the base declares extensions.relativeworktrees (as git does); fixtures set the extension and format version 1; new case for a relative entry without the extension (named error everywhere).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 22 per the 5338b04 pre-push verdict: config read once into a private snapshot used for parse, re-exec and grant (deterministic swap regression + mutation); Codex metadata sentences qualified to binding-derived directories; probe accepts a denial only after an unsandboxed read succeeds and the sandboxed error is a permission denial.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
tps-flint and others added 3 commits October 18, 2026 18:06
Round 23: CI Docker lane (bookworm git 2.39) refuses bases carrying the relativeworktrees extension; the relative-layout tests now detect the installed git's support once from the real binary and assert the exact named error per capability (no skip, no either-matcher); detector unit-tested against git version.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 24: the Docker attested lane's real-nono positive case is released but the agent writes no .tps-agent.pid in its workspace (first run of that case since round 22's config snapshot); cause traced and fixed so the child's workspace and its grant resolve against the original config location; the failing assertions carry the launch output; deterministic relative-workspace test + mutation.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 25 per the 7bbcc3e verdict (test text and teardown only): fixture comment states only what the fake-nono fixture does; real-nono teardown terminates and waits for the released child pid (parsed from the release line) and the launcher, process group when no release line; 'cannot leak' comment narrowed. Round 24 cause (Codex): the test SIGTERMed the launcher on the release line, whose handler removes the config snapshot before the child reads it; the test now waits for the pid file, child exit or a deadline; the snapshot carries the resolved absolute workspace.

Round 26 (CodeRabbit 1518776): agentLaunchOptions refuses any grant overlapping the base working tree in either direction, except the exact binding-derived worktree metadata paths and the private config snapshot; tests for a grant inside the base, a tmpDir under it, an allowlist-adjacent path, and the kept launches; mutation (one-directional check) red.

Verdict: APPROVE — head f40a38e0. Repo visibility checked via the API before writing: public; every finding below is readable from the diff.

Kern's lane: the config grant's read-only scope, worktree cleanup on every exit path, and the sandbox-flag scan's immunity to -- placement and --sandbox= forms. All three hold.

The re-exec carries --config <snapshot> [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1288], where the snapshot is a copy the parent writes to a private, launcher-created directory (~/.tps/launch/config-*, parent 0700, file 0600 wx). The sandbox grant is --read-file <snapshot file> [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:328] — read-only by nono semantics and strictly narrower than the config's directory. Verified, with the negatives pinned by tests:

  • The ORIGINAL config path is never granted (not --read-file <customConfig> asserted).
  • No writable grant may cover the snapshot root: approveLaunch refuses cwd/workdir/allow/allowFiles that cover snapshotRoot [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1300-1306], and sandboxProfileGrantRefusal refuses any profile write into it [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:602]. Tests pin the inside-the-base variants (refuses a writable config snapshot grant inside the base, refuses a profile … grant for the config snapshot inside the base).
  • The runtime file-grant allowlist admits the config path as a read-only target only [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:893].
  • The snapshot is removed on every parent exit path: finally in runAgent, SIGINT/SIGTERM/SIGHUP once-handlers, and a process.once("exit") handler that also covers the refusal process.exit calls deep in the launch path.

2. Worktree cleanup runs on every exit path

  • Parent-side, before the sandbox: onStart runs git worktree add --no-checkout --detach with core.hooksPath=/dev/null and core.fsmonitor=false [packages/cli/src/utils/agent-lifecycle.ts:479-493] — no repository hook or filter runs outside the sandbox during setup (tests pin post-checkout hooks and smudge/fsmonitor never running in the parent).
  • A failure after creation rolls back inside onStart itself (pinned twice: "a metadata failure after worktree creation removes the worktree", "post-add metadata failure rolls back the real worktree").
  • A failure after onStart (approval/profile refusal) hits the catch, which removes the worktree only when this launch created it [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1337-1343].
  • Every launchAttested exit — normal, refused, or thrown — runs the finally cleanup [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1355-1366].
  • Removal re-verifies the setup binding first (workspace/gitdir realpath, registry gitdir content, marker, commondir) so a rewritten registry is a named WorktreeLifecycleError, never a force-remove of something else (pinned: "a child registry rewrite makes parent cleanup fail").
  • A pre-existing worktree is never removed (cleanup is gated on worktreeCreated); the child checks out the deferred worktree inside the sandbox [packages/cli/bin/tps.ts:545-552] and never removes it; an inherited TPS_WORKTREE_PENDING is deleted and re-set only when this launch actually created the worktree.

3. The flag scan reads tps's own arguments and cannot be fooled

  • The gate and the attestation trigger read ownArgv() — parseCliArgs's output, which inserts -- at every wrapped-payload boundary (agent run --message, mail watch --exec, secrets-guard <cmd>, office exec) [packages/cli/bin/cli-args.cjs:184-196]. ownFlag [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:1318] exact-matches only before the first --.
  • Downstream, sandboxed is the ATTESTED RELEASE, not the flag [packages/cli/bin/tps.ts:125] — a --sandboxed-shaped token that the scan misses is inert; nothing can act on an unreleased claim.
  • Own --sandbox/--sandboxed value forms are validated (accepts only 'true' or 'false', --sandbox= and space forms both handled) [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:1341-1362]; payload forms are not scanned.
  • The parent-constructed re-exec argv [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1272-1288] contains no --, so every child flag is own.
  • Pinned by tests: payload --sandbox <word> / --sandboxed in messages and wrapped commands proceed; -- --sandboxed (payload) proceeds past the gate to the nono-availability refusal instead of tripping it; an own unattested --sandboxed is refused; the attestation socket connect happens only when --sandboxed is an own flag; an own invalid --sandbox 1 is still refused by name.

Findings (non-blocking)

  1. [packages/cli/test/launch-attestation.test.ts:730] The fake-nono fixture shell script calls /bin/true — a Linux-only path (present since #350, but the new "the launcher release carries its retained worktree binding" test is the first to reach it). On a macOS dev host the file fails 1 case with exit 127. Cosmetic portability fix (command true or an env-resolved path).
  2. The real-nono cases in the new file cannot pass on a macOS host at all: the fixture sandbox-HOME base (/var/tmp) resolves under /private/var, which is inside nono's system_read_macos read root, so the launcher's own profile gate refuses the launch (the pre-existing launch-attestation-real-nono.test.ts fails the same way here — a control failing identically on the unchanged parts). The authoritative run is the Docker lane, which this PR extends to include the new file (docker-compose.yml attested service) — that lane is green on this head.
  3. The own-argv scan discipline should extend to every flag the launcher reads positionally from process.argv; a few non-sandbox flags in bin/tps.ts are still read from raw argv. Out of this PR's scope (the sandbox flags are the security boundary and they are fully converted); noting the requirement here.

Verified on head f40a38e

Built worktree (bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run build); tests through the repo's isolated launcher (scripts/test-suite.mjs cli …, HOME-isolated per cli#430):

  • sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts: 46 pass / 5 fail — all 5 failures are the real-nono block on this macOS host for the environmental reason in finding 2 (no-release timeouts; fixture base inside a system read root).
  • agent-launch-options + agent-workspace + launcher-grants + launch-attestation + runtime-dir-credential-overlap: 158 pass / 1 fail — the single failure is finding 1's /bin/true Linux-ism, not the feature under test.
  • Named checks on this head: "Build (TypeScript strict)" — pass; "Unit & Integration Tests" — pass; "Docker Integration" — pass (the lane that runs the new file's real-nono block). I make no claim about other lanes.

What I did not verify: the five real-nono cases locally (macOS host cannot run them — finding 2); the author's cross-head evidence matrix (I re-derived the key behaviors from the source and the passing fake-nono cases instead). Darwin launchd behavior was not touched by this review; no launchd lanes were run on this host.

Review — cli#516: keep --config through the attested re-exec, worktree setup outside the sandbox, scan tps's own flags

Head reviewed: f40a38e0. Repo visibility checked before writing: gh-as sherlock repo view tpsdev-ai/cli --json visibility → PUBLIC. Author is tps-anvil (tps-* agent), so I ran the build and suites. Worktree ~/work/review-648-sherlock, every test lane under its own isolated HOME/TMPDIR; no nono/launcher process of mine is left running.

Verdict: APPROVE. Three non-blocking findings. One part of the change I could not exercise on this host, and CI skips it too — see the last section.

The re-exec cannot be talked into a sandbox claim

--sandboxed is honoured only from the launcher's release, and the flag scan reads the normalised argv (bin/tps.ts:23-25, ownArgv() = [argv0, argv1, ...helpArgs.argv]), with meow also parsing that same array (argv: helpArgs.argv). So a --sandboxed inside a wrapped payload is not a tps flag, and ownFlag only looks before the first --:

export function ownFlag(argv: readonly string[], flag: string): boolean {
  const end = argv.indexOf("--");
  return (end === -1 ? argv : argv.slice(0, end)).includes(flag);
}

enforceLaunchControlOrExit attests only when the flag is tps's own and a launcher socket is present, and the value the rest of the launcher uses is the attestation result, never the argv:

  const sandboxed = confinement?.released === true;
  enforceLaunchControl({ command, rest, argv: ownArgv(), parsedFlags: cli.flags,
    confinement: { released: sandboxed, reason: confinement?.reason } });

enforceLaunchControlOrExit() runs before the command switch in main(), so --config is not read (or snapshotted) before the gate. The --config value that reaches the sandbox is the parent's snapshot, not the caller's path: runAgent copies the config into ~/.tps/launch/config-XXXX/agent.yaml (parent dir 0o700, file { mode: 0o600, flag: "wx" }), rewrites the resolved workspace into the snapshot, and passes --config <snapshot> to the re-exec.

The config snapshot is read-only and cannot be widened by it

The launch grants carry the snapshot as a read-file, never a directory:

    readFiles: [...harnessReadFiles(input.launchId, home), canonicalPath(input.configPath)],

and both writable shapes are refused before the launcher runs:

                if (writable.some((path) => path && grantCovers(canonicalPath(path), snapshot.snapshotRoot)) ||
                    (result.options.allowFiles ?? []).some((path) => canonicalPath(path) === configPath)) {
                  throw new Error("refusing a writable config snapshot directory");
                }

plus sandboxProfileGrantRefusal(profile, process.env, selectedRuntime, nonoAvailable, snapshot?.snapshotRoot), which refuses a profile write/write_file grant that overlaps the snapshot dir (nono.ts:602). The snapshot is also removed on the normal path, on exit, and on SIGINT/SIGTERM/SIGHUP (agent.ts:1087-1117).

Parent-side setup runs git, not the workload's code

onStart runs in the parent with the base repository as cwd, strips every inherited GIT_* and disables system/global config (gitEnv()), and neutralises the two repository-configured execution points on the write itself:

  const args = [
    "-c",
    "core.hooksPath=/dev/null",
    "-c",
    "core.fsmonitor=false",
    "worktree",
    "add",

The worktree registry is read from the trusted base (~/.tps/../ops/tps or the sibling tps), not from the workspace's .git marker: a registered entry is matched only when its recorded gitdir resolves to this workspace's marker, and a symlink marker, a non-file marker for a registered worktree, or an unresolvable registry entry is a named WorktreeLifecycleError before any grant is computed. Cleanup re-validates that whole binding (workspace realpath, gitDir realpath, the registry entry's exact contents, the common dir) before worktree remove. I also probed that git worktree remove --force runs neither an fsmonitor command nor hooks, so the cleanup path's lack of the two -c neutralisers is not exploitable as far as I can construct it.

Findings

  1. [packages/cli/src/utils/nono.ts:602] — the snapshot-dir write guard is not pinned by any test. Deleting those four lines leaves launcher-grants.test.ts (20 pass, 0 fail) and agent-launch-options.test.ts (63 pass, 0 fail) fully green: the existing "config snapshot inside the base" cases pass through agentLaunchOptions's own base-overlap check(), not through this guard. The only case this guard can catch — a nono profile that grants write to the snapshot's directory but not to the base (e.g. ~/.tps/launch) — has no case. It is the one check standing between a profile and a writable config snapshot, so it is worth a case whose profile grants write on the snapshot root.
  2. [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1356-1372] — worktree cleanup is a finally, so it covers a thrown error and a failed launch, but not a signalled parent: the snapshot handlers registered in runAgent clean up the snapshot and then re-raise the signal (process.kill(process.pid, signal) after removing the handler), which terminates the process without unwinding. Because onStart now reports an existing worktree as changed: false, no later launch removes the leftover either. If "cleanup on every exit path" is meant to include SIGTERM, the worktree cleanup needs the same signal handler shape the snapshot has; if leaving the worktree is deliberate, the comment should say so.
  3. [packages/cli/src/commands/agent.ts:1227] — const sandboxRequired = (args as any).sandboxRequired ?? process.argv.includes("--sandbox-required"); is a leftover raw-argv scan, the exact shape item (3) removes elsewhere. It is fail-closed (a payload token can only make the launch assert more isolation) and bin/tps.ts always passes a boolean, so it is dead on the shipped path — but it contradicts "scans only tps's own flags" for any other runAgent caller.

Runs

bun install --frozen-lockfile; packages/cli build emits dist/bin/tps.js (the root build's first cli pass printed a src/utils/relay.ts:668 type error; that file is untouched by this diff and the final cli build succeeds — I did not build origin/main to confirm it is pre-existing). Suites, all under the repo's HOME-isolated launcher with TMPDIR=/tmp:

  • agent-launch-options.test.ts + launcher-grants.test.ts + runtime-dir-credential-overlap.test.ts + agent-workspace.test.ts — 118 pass, 0 fail
  • sandboxed-launch-516.test.ts — 46 pass, 5 fail (the five real nono re-exec cases), 0 skipped

What I could not verify

The five failures are the re-exec cases, and they are skipped in CI because no nono is installed there — the Unit & Integration Tests job log shows (skip) cli#516 — real nono SKIPPED: no nono at an absolute path. On this host nono 0.74.0 is present, but nono ps lists no live session; the launcher therefore never gets its release and times out:

Applying sandbox...
❌ refusing to launch: no released child within 20000ms

I proved that is the host, not the diff: a bare nono run --name probe --allow /tmp -- sleep 20 followed by nono ps --json also returns [] (and nono ps --all shows only sessions from 62 days ago). So the attestation binding check cannot succeed here for any launch, and the sandboxed re-exec path (config snapshot read, deferred checkout, worktree binding over the release line) is verified by reading the code and by the fake-nono cases, not at runtime. The non-nono half of the new file and the three other suites above do pass.
