Documents the new Bandwidth component in the Sustainability Dashboard methodology.

What changed

  • Methodology now describes two emission sources: Azure resources (Microsoft-measured via Azure Carbon Optimization) and network egress (estimated).
  • New Network egress (Bandwidth) subsection defining the calculation:
    • Network energy intensity 0.059 kWh/GB — Sustainable Web Design Model v4.
    • Global grid carbon intensity 494 g CO2e/kWh — Ember (the source SWD cites).
    • 0.059 kWh/GB x 494 g CO2e/kWh ~= 29 g CO2e/GB; edge-cached traffic counted at 30%.
    • Notes only the network segment of SWD is used (data-centre energy is already in the Azure resources; end-user device energy is out of scope).
  • Reversed the exclusion: removed "Network traffic and data transfer" from What is not included (now included); clarified the remaining exclusion is end-user device energy.

Pairs with the July 2026 release note (separate PR).

…ainability Dashboard

Add a Network egress (Bandwidth) component to the dashboard methodology,
covering the CO2 from data transfer that was previously listed as not
included. Defines the estimate (0.059 kWh/GB network energy intensity from
the Sustainable Web Design Model x 494 g CO2e/kWh global grid intensity from
Ember, cached traffic at 30%) and notes only the network segment is used.

Link checker false positive — no action needed.

The check flagged https://ember-energy.org/data/ as a [403]. This is a false positive: the page is live and returns HTTP 200 to normal browsers. Ember rate-limits/blocks automated link-checkers (the runner's user agent/IP), which produces the 403.

The link is correct and the page is reachable, so I'm keeping it as the source for the 494 g CO2e/kWh grid-intensity figure. Verified just now:

curl -A "Mozilla/5.0 ... Chrome/120" https://ember-energy.org/data/ → HTTP 200
curl (default UA) https://ember-energy.org/data/ → HTTP 200
