Summary

  • keep REST as the primary main-branch protection proof and recover REST transport or core-quota failures through GitHub's equivalent GraphQL branch-protection rule query
  • require exactly one main rule with strict updates plus CodeFactor and DeepScan; malformed, missing, ambiguous, or unavailable policy data still fails closed
  • expose the policy proof source in the machine-readable receipt and document the release contract
  • add exhaustive success and negative-control coverage for the recovery path

PM lineage

Verification

  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs test -- tests/unit/scripts/release/hosted-analysis-gate.spec.ts tests/integration/release-automation-contract.spec.ts — 89 passed
  • changed gate exact coverage — 100/100/100/100
  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs coverage — 500 files, 7,348 tests, exact 100/100/100/100
  • pnpm quality:static — passed
  • pnpm lint:eslint — passed
  • pnpm lint:duplicates — zero clones
  • live gate for ce82afe1ed9124ba71a51177b5d0d39463c5cde9 — passed

Production control

Main CI run 31869377866 and failed-job rerun 94976129763 independently reproduced a REST branch-protection read failure after every other main gate passed. The equivalent GraphQL query succeeds with the same policy data through a separate quota pool; this PR makes that transport recovery deterministic without weakening the release policy.

Summary by Sourcery

Recover main branch protection reads by falling back from GitHub REST to an equivalent GraphQL query while preserving strict release policy.

New Features:

  • Include the branch protection proof source (REST or GraphQL) in the hosted analysis gate receipt payload.

Enhancements:

  • Centralize branch protection reading into a helper that supports REST-first with GraphQL recovery and enforces a single strict main rule with required analyzer contexts.
  • Tighten failure handling for branch protection reads so malformed, missing, or ambiguous GraphQL policy data fails closed.

Documentation:

  • Update releasing documentation to describe the REST-first, GraphQL-fallback branch protection contract and strict main rule requirements.

Tests:

  • Add unit coverage for REST transport failure recovery via GraphQL and for closed-fail scenarios on invalid or ambiguous GraphQL branch protection data.

Summary by cubic

Restores release analyzer readiness when GitHub REST branch-protection reads fail by falling back to the equivalent GraphQL rule query with cursor pagination. Previously the gate aborted on REST transport or core-quota failures and the GraphQL fallback could miss duplicates; now it reads REST first, then GraphQL across all pages with strict validation while still requiring exactly one strict main rule including CodeFactor and DeepScan.

  • Review notes
    • Adds a protected readBranchProtection flow: use REST for main; on REST failure, query GraphQL branchProtectionRules with --paginate --slurp, validate pageInfo.hasNextPage and endCursor, and fail on malformed, truncated, or inconsistent pages.
    • Enforces a single exact main rule with strict status checks and both analyzer contexts across all pages; ambiguous or missing policy data fails closed.
    • Emits branch_protection.source in the gate receipt ("rest" or "graphql"); updates releasing docs.
    • Extends tests with cross-page success and negative controls; keeps exact coverage.
  • Rollout
    • No config changes. Ensure the repository has exactly one main branch protection rule with strict status checks including CodeFactor and DeepScan; otherwise the gate fails closed.

Written for commit 8ab2a0e. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Keep the branch-protection REST endpoint as the primary proof, then recover transport or core-quota failures through the equivalent GraphQL rule query. Require a unique exact main policy with strict updates and both hosted analyzers, expose the proof source, and fail closed for malformed or ambiguous data.\n\nAdd exhaustive recovery controls and document the release contract so continuous main readiness no longer depends on a single GitHub API quota pool.

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a GraphQL fallback when branch-protection data cannot be retrieved through the primary connection.
    • Successful hosted-analysis results now show which policy source was used.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved validation for missing, malformed, or ambiguous branch-protection settings.
    • The release gate now fails safely when policy data cannot be verified.
  • Documentation

    • Updated release guidance to explain the fallback behavior and required branch-protection checks.

Walkthrough

The hosted-analysis gate now retrieves branch protection through REST first and GraphQL after REST transport failure. It validates one strict main rule with the required analyzer checks, reports the source, and fails closed for invalid or unavailable policy data.

The release gate’s branch-protection proof can inspect only the first page of rules, allowing an invalid policy with additional main rules to pass in some repositories. Merge should wait for pagination or explicit fail-closed handling plus regression coverage.

Reviewer's Guide

Implements a resilient branch protection read path for the hosted analysis release gate by adding a REST-first, GraphQL-fallback reader, propagating the protection source into the gate payload, tightening failure behavior, and documenting the release contract; backed by expanded unit coverage and PM artifacts.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Add a REST-first, GraphQL-fallback branch protection reader and integrate it into the hosted analysis gate.
  • Introduce readBranchProtection helper that tries GitHub REST branch protection API and falls back to GraphQL on transport failure.
  • Parse GraphQL branchProtectionRules, enforce exactly one main rule with strict status checks and required contexts, and map it into the existing protection shape.
  • Replace inline REST-only protection read in main with readBranchProtection and propagate errors unchanged from the helper.
scripts/release/hosted-analysis-gate.mjs
Expose branch protection source and add tests for GraphQL fallback and failure modes.
  • Extend GatePayload.branch_protection with a source field indicating rest or graphql.
  • Extend command mock to simulate gh api graphql behavior and failures.
  • Add positive test for successful REST failure recovery via GraphQL branch protection read.
  • Update command-failure test to require both REST and GraphQL failures for branch protection to fail.
  • Add negative-control tests for malformed, missing, or ambiguous GraphQL branch protection data that must fail closed.
tests/unit/scripts/release/hosted-analysis-gate.spec.ts
Document the release gate’s branch protection contract and PM lineage artifacts.
  • Update RELEASING.md to describe REST-first, GraphQL-fallback behavior, strict main rule requirements, and fail-closed policy for malformed or ambiguous data.
  • Refresh PM history and issue artifacts to reflect the new release automation contract.

@unbraind Full review completed for exact head 8ab2a0e6e39b23a6d50c1c95cdc1f4d7c4644901.

I found no fail-closed policy-equivalence or GraphQL response-validation findings.

The pagination fix validates each page, rejects invalid termination and cursors, and checks exact main uniqueness across all pages. The unit tests cover the relevant recovery and negative-control cases.

I used the repository guidance that PM records provide traceability only. Hosted exact-head checks provide merge-validation evidence. Several hosted checks are still in progress. The live GraphQL diagnostic was denied by the sandbox integration token, so it was not used as validation evidence.
