Summary

This PR adds a broad public-SDK foundation for reproducible agent environments while fixing silent acceptance-criteria loss in concurrent tracker merges.

  • publishes declared observation contracts with pre-call ceilings, emitted-byte calibration, corpus-dependence declarations, deterministic tier degradation, and truthful refusal receipts;
  • publishes total, deterministic verdict contracts over recorded state with composable predicates, exact evidence pointers, privacy-safe value digests, and an explicit no-reward boundary;
  • publishes isolated episode specifications and sessions that compose workspace recipes, observable/withheld projections, ordinary PmClient actions, hard limits, scoring, and trajectory evidence;
  • adds a dependency-free executable example that runs reset → observe → ordinary SDK action → verdict → close from the packed public SDK;
  • makes semicolon-backed acceptance criteria use add/remove-aware element union during three-way merge, preserving independent multi-branch additions without changing the storage format;
  • restores exact repository coverage for the MCP uninitialized-workspace guards;
  • records governed PM closeout and generates the changelog with pm-changelog 2026.9.2.

PM lineage

Completed in this delivery:

Substantial SDK/CLI progress, deliberately left open and unclaimed for their documented residuals:

New GitHub reports discovered during the live inventory were deduplicated across all statuses, linked to shipped predecessor lineages, and left open/unclaimed:

Verification

  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm quality:static
  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs coverage
    • 603 files / 8,341 tests
    • statements 61,714/61,714
    • branches 46,669/46,669
    • functions 12,840/12,840
    • lines 59,387/59,387
  • focused linked PM tests for all seven worked items
  • focused source coverage for the new environment SDK: 100/100/100/100
  • packed fresh-consumer install and executable SDK environment run in a temporary directory
  • packed npx and bunx smoke: passed across 13 packages
  • package-first dogfood: 88 commands passed
  • pnpm audit --audit-level high: no known vulnerabilities
  • tracked secret scan: no credential-like secrets detected
  • full graph composition, tracker context, defect evidence, and append-only record-integrity assurances passed on the final tracker state

The local release pipeline reached only the hosted-analysis boundary after commit because the SHA had not yet been pushed. This PR supplies the remote head required for that final hosted proof.

  • Preserve independent acceptance-criteria additions and removals during three-way merges without changing their legacy storage format.
  • Restore coverage for MCP operations against uninitialized workspaces.

Enhancements:

  • Expose reproducible evidence, privacy-safe verdict digests, withheld-field isolation, hard episode limits, and an explicit no-reward evaluation boundary.

Documentation:

  • Document the public SDK agent-environment contracts and executable example.

Tests:

  • Add comprehensive contract, episode, merge, and executable-example coverage for the new behavior.

Chores:

  • Record PM closeout lineage and newly discovered follow-up issues.

Summary by cubic

Adds public SDK contracts for reproducible agent environments and fixes concurrent acceptance-criteria additions being silently discarded during three-way merges.

New Features

  • Publishes observation, verdict, and episode contracts through @unbrained/pm-cli/sdk for reproducible, budgeted agent environments.
  • Adds a dependency-free executable example covering reset → observe → ordinary SDK action → verdict → close.

Bug Fixes

  • Acceptance criteria now merge with add/remove-aware element union, preserving independent multi-branch additions without changing the storage format.
  • Restores exact coverage for MCP operations targeting uninitialized workspaces.
  • Episode isolation is enforced: grading reads count against the observation budget, nested observable/withheld path overlap is rejected, and cyclic or non-JSON verdict operands fail at the contract boundary.
  • Episode closure is atomic: the terminal transition is reserved before grading, concurrent callers share one close result, and the session is restored only when grading fails.

Written for commit 2de94a7. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Publish calibrated observation, total verdict, and isolated episode primitives through the supported SDK surface.

Preserve concurrent acceptance-criteria mutations, add a dependency-free executable SDK example, and enforce the new paths with exact repository coverage.

Record complete PM evidence, generated changelog entries, and canonical lineage for newly reported merge-receipt defects.

Adds issue metadata and history events for scalar merge ordering, legacy merge-receipt references, and hash-only merge receipts.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 2d9d2

The new environment SDK can disclose withheld grading state and bypass declared observation limits, while valid cyclic inputs can crash contract creation. These public-contract defects should be fixed before merge.

Account every recorded-state grading read against the declared observation budget, reject nested observable and withheld path overlap, and fail cyclic or non-JSON verdict operands at the portable contract boundary.

Align the executable SDK example with its canonical task identity, add exact-coverage regressions for each review finding, and replace generic GitHub intake relationships with typed recurrence edges so graph quality remains monotonic.

Round-one bot feedback disposition at d1285167e:

  • CodeRabbit summary: all four reported risks were valid and are fixed; each inline thread has commit-specific evidence.
  • CodeRabbit invocation receipt: acknowledged; the completed review produced four actionable findings, all resolved and regression-tested.
  • Sourcery reviewer guide: scope and flow summary acknowledged. Sourcery's separate review reported its seven-day diff-character quota, which is a provider limitation rather than approval or a product finding.
  • CodSpeed report: acknowledged; the first head left all 11 benchmarks unchanged. The pushed head will rerun hosted performance checks.
  • Codecov report: acknowledged; all modified coverable lines were covered. Local focused coverage for the remediated SDK and executable example is exactly 100/100/100/100.

The full local quality:static gate now passes, including graph composition and all 58,421 append-only history events.

@unbraind Full review complete at d1285167e.

The four prior CodeRabbit findings are fixed. I found one remaining issue.

  • Major — Make close() atomic.
    In src/sdk/environment/agent-environment.ts Line 885, close() awaits evaluate() before it sets closed on Line 887. Two concurrent close() calls can both pass the open-session check in evaluate(), each read and grade the workspace, and each append verdict and close entries. The callers can receive different trajectories from the same session. A concurrent step() can also start before either close call sets closed.

    Reserve the terminal transition before the first await, or serialize and cache the close operation. The implementation must permit exactly one close-time evaluation and return the same closed result to concurrent callers. Add a regression test that invokes Promise.all([session.close(), session.close()]) and verifies one terminal trajectory and one grading read.

You are interacting with an AI system.

Reserve the terminal transition before asynchronous grading, share a single in-flight close result across concurrent callers, and restore the session only when grading fails.

Add regression evidence for one grading read, one verdict and close trajectory, blocked concurrent actions, exact coverage, and PM-linked verification.

Second-round review disposition:

  • CodeRabbit full review: the concurrent close() race was valid and is resolved in 2de94a701.
  • close() now reserves terminal state before its first await, returns one shared in-flight result, blocks concurrent actions, emits one verdict and one close entry, and performs one grading read.
  • A failed grading attempt restores the open session, preserving retry semantics.
  • Focused suites pass 18/18, the SDK module is exact 100/100/100/100, and the full local static gate passes all 58,427 history events.

@unbraind Full review complete at 2de94a701.

The simultaneous close() race is resolved. One lifecycle race remains.

  • Major — Serialize in-flight operations with close().
    In src/sdk/environment/agent-environment.ts Line 870, step() validates closed and then awaits adapter.execute(). If step() starts first and its adapter call remains pending, close() can set closed on Line 890, read and grade the pre-action state, and append verdict and close. The pending action can then finish and append an action entry after close.

    This produces terminal evidence that does not include an accepted action. It also permits a trajectory ordered as reset → verdict → close → action.

    Serialize all session operations, or make close() wait for operations already in progress before it reads the grading state. Add a regression test with a deferred adapter.execute(): start step(), start close(), confirm grading has not run, resolve the action, then assert that the verdict includes the action and close is the final trajectory entry.

Final review disposition at exact head 2de94a7012065194126eb0e78b9b8188c5cd8d38: all hosted CI, coverage, security, compatibility, smoke, runtime, and static gates are terminal and green. CodeRabbit completed two substantive rounds; all five actionable findings were fixed, regression-tested, acknowledged in their threads, and retained at final head. The third requested full review was provider-rate-limited after selecting all 35 changed files, so that status is recorded as a provider limitation rather than approval. Greptile produced no review surface after repeated requests; Sourcery reported quota exhaustion; Cubic skipped. No unresolved bot finding remains on the available review surfaces.
