feat(sdk): fit complete context envelopes and repair session recovery - #1592
Packages currently have to reimplement complete-packet fitting because candidate packing and pre-receipt token accounting do not measure an arbitrary envelope including its own receipt and framing. Add fitOutputEnvelope to the public query/aggregate SDK and the host-injected package SDK. It retains whole ordered rows, supports prefix/skip admission and multiple caller-owned renderers, preserves custom estimators, stabilizes complete byte/token accounting, and refuses infeasible budgets, nonconvergent accounting and exhausted work limits.
Session references now advertise the executable pm get <item-id> --depth brief recovery command. The integration regression creates an item, suppresses it on a repeated session read, and executes the receipt's actual command. Public literal types and custom ExtensionCommandSdk compatibility requirements are documented and captured in the reviewed SDK snapshot.
The tracker also records the three backend roadmap slices from #1587, #1588 and #1589 under the existing backend initiative, plus a separate managed-package preview UX enhancement. Those items remain open and unclaimed. GH-1590 is recorded with its existing message-surface owner for copy reconciliation, and the independently reproduced GH-1591 terminal-update self-conflict is captured as queued pm-pllp78. Dependency cooldown/major-migration and historical release-timing evidence stays with its existing owners.
Validation and delivery evidence:
All 26 required PR contexts passed on reviewed head 28068374d4479f9436f6c3db562d3de2dd41de8d, with no pending checks or unresolved review threads. Exact-head source coverage is 100% for lines, statements, functions and branches.
Merged-main CI passed on 829af6fe147978757f0f06693391d3288736e7f7. Main has the identical reviewed tree, rebuilds successfully, and passes the squash-PR analyzer provenance gate. DeepScan has zero new issues; CodeFactor has zero outstanding annotations.
72 focused SDK/session/copied-package checks; independent pre-fix recovery, receipt-exclusion and public-declaration mutation controls. Complete local pnpm quality:static passes, including the unchanged graph ceiling, SDK contracts, registry/OSV advisory checks and bounded mutation gate (345 killed, seven declared equivalents).
Packed Node/Bun and npx/bunx package journeys pass. The published 2026.10.25 artifact independently passes npm/Bun installed-agent and npx/bunx/MCP acceptance; it predates this implementation.
All open GitHub issues have PM-link comments. Final GitHub dependency/code/secret alert inventories are empty, and no open PR remains after this merge. Deferred dependency cooldowns and compatibility migrations retain their canonical owners.
Both CodeRabbit findings were corrected through audited PM mutations, and CodeRabbit explicitly confirmed each fix. DeepScan's optional-value test finding is fixed. Later full-review requests were quota-limited; Sourcery and Cubic are quota-limited and Greptile's trial ended. Unavailable re-reviews are not approval.
Fresh merged-main get/list actions are visible in Sentry and have exact telemetry start/finish pairs. The broker and physical local spool were empty after the probe flush; the required aggregate observability gate also passes.
The separate rolling release/nightly reliability report remains red: release findings contain only dispatch_window (three original failures among 30 completed attempts, at the unchanged 10% limit), while nightly retains failure-rate and insufficient-sample findings. Existing live owners pm-prrlce and pm-0trehk remain open and unclaimed. Current product validation does not establish historical reliability recovery.
CHANGELOG.md is generated and checked with latest pm-changelog 2026.10.25. Today's sole publication predates this work; these changes remain Unreleased. The merged-main daily release dry-run returns release_already_cut_today with exactly one tag, preserving the next eligible daily cut.
Package authors currently duplicate packet-fitting loops because projection
packing and pre-receipt accounting do not measure arbitrary complete output.
Expose fitOutputEnvelope through the aggregate/query SDK and the injected
package SDK so callers retain their ranking, metadata, renderers and estimators
while sharing whole-row admission, omission receipts, fixed-point accounting
and explicit work/infeasibility refusals.
Reserve and freeze the accounting receipt, preserve its correct public type
when a builder supplies the reserved key, and publish readonly receipt types.
Exercise Unicode, transport-size order changes, exact ceilings, custom byte
estimators, stable omissions, work limits and nonconvergent accounting. Include
copied-package and public TypeScript consumer coverage plus independent
receipt-exclusion and reserved-type negative controls.
Replace the invalid session recovery command with get --depth brief and execute
the actual emitted command in an isolated repeated-read/restore journey.
Regenerate the approved orientation calibration for the exact 30-byte increase
per five-command session without changing budgets, delivered rows, suppression,
gate predicates or margins.
Record the backend roadmap slices, existing positioning reconciliation, managed
preview usability gap and independently reproduced terminal-update guard defect
in canonical PM lineage. Keep queued work unclaimed and include the two completed
output items, their immutable closure evidence and the package-generated
Unreleased changelog in this reviewed delivery.
Tracked implementation: pm-gh1567 and pm-session-reference-recovery.
Added SDK support for fitting complete output envelopes to token budgets, with configurable item selection, omission details, and output-size receipts.
Extension commands can access the output-fitting capability through the injected SDK.
Bug Fixes
Session reference receipts now provide a valid recovery command for retrieving referenced items.
Documentation
Added guidance for output fitting and updated session-reference recovery instructions.
The SDK adds fitOutputEnvelope for fitting whole rows against complete rendered-envelope budgets. Session receipts now advertise the supported --depth brief recovery command. The PR also updates PM feature, issue, registry, and release records.
Changes: SDK output-envelope fitting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fitter contract and accounting src/sdk/output/fit-envelope.ts, sdk/public-surface.json
Adds fitOutputEnvelope and its public types. It measures complete renderings, stabilizes receipt-inclusive byte and token accounting, and supports prefix and skip selection policies. It rejects infeasible minimum envelopes, invalid inputs, exhausted work limits, and unstable accounting.
Exports the fitter through the SDK and injects it into extension command contexts. Adds unit, type, and integration coverage. Updates API documentation, the Unreleased changelog, and the completed issue record.
Changes the advertised recovery command to pm get <item-id> --depth brief. The integration test executes the receipt’s command and checks that it returns the referenced item. Related documentation, calibration data, and issue records are updated.

Explanation
The title "feat(sdk): fit complete context envelopes and repair session recovery" matches the main change: the new public fitOutputEnvelope SDK API and the session-reference recovery fix. Both appear in the raw summary, the changelog, the SDK public surface and the linked issues #1567 and pm-session-reference-recovery. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit prefix. It is slightly long at 69 characters, but it stays on topic.

Explanation
The fitter, its SDK injection, documentation, and tests relate to #1567. The session-recovery changes do not. They change restore_reference_with, session receipt emission, recovery documentation, calibration data, and add a separate integration journey. The PR also changes unrelated tracker records and roadmap items. These changes are outside #1567's SDK fitting scope.
Resolution
Remove the session-recovery implementation, tests, documentation, calibration changes, and unrelated tracker or roadmap updates from this PR, or move them to separately linked pull requests. Keep the envelope-fitting implementation and its supporting SDK tests and documentation here.

Adds complete output-envelope fitting as a public SDK primitive with host injection.
Fits indivisible ordered rows under prefix or skip admission without assuming monotonic serialized size.
Accounts for caller framing, multiple renderers, receipt self-inclusion, UTF-8 bytes, and custom token estimators through bounded fixed-point stabilization.
Rejects infeasible budgets, invalid controls, unstable accounting, invalid renderers, and exhausted work limits without returning partial packets.
Exports the API through query and aggregate SDK surfaces and injects it into copied-package command contexts.
Captures public types, readonly/reserved receipt behavior, compatibility requirements, and the reviewed SDK snapshot.
Repairs session-reference recovery to advertise and validate the executable depth-based command.
Changes the receipt literal and emitted command to pm get <item-id> --depth brief.
Adds an integration regression that creates an item, suppresses it on a repeated session read, parses the advertised command, and executes it successfully.
Updates recovery documentation and related session contract coverage.
Provide a public generic SDK fitter for ordered whole rows that measures caller-defined envelopes through complete renderings, including framing and a self-accounting omission receipt.
Support deterministic prefix-or-skip admission without splitting rows, stabilize byte and token accounting, and refuse infeasible or unstable fits while bounding and reporting fitting work.

System calls cannot be simulated consistently and are left out of the measure. The reported value understates the real cost. Switch to the Walltime instrument to measure them.
Exercise custom token estimates that change while rendered byte length stays
constant, so the fitter must stabilize both independent counters. The final

Narrow the advertised session recovery command from unknown to string before
executing it, so a missing receipt produces a deliberate diagnostic and the
integration journey cannot dereference an absent optional value.
Correct the dependency census through the PM CLI to keep Sentry 11 under its
separate SDK, runtime, telemetry and rollback compatibility gate. Reconcile
the messaging item with its still-proposed category ADR across the description,
acceptance criteria, expected outcome and illustrative draft label.
Record the DeepScan and CodeRabbit remediation in the existing PM lineage.
The linked 35-case recovery suite, focused lint, graph-composition and record
integrity checks pass. Regenerate and check the unchanged changelog with the
latest pm-changelog package. A new exact-head hosted check and bot-review pass
remain required before merge.

The log reports prose-edge-gaps-ceiling: observed 1235, ceiling 1233, distance −2, enforcement block, over 3115 items.
This is hosted tracker/relationship-gate evidence, not a reproduced envelope or session runtime defect. Please reconcile the actual missing semantic links through the sanctioned PM workflow and rerun the unchanged gate on the resulting head; do not raise the ceiling or add invented relationships to clear it.
Independent isolated review of this exact head passed 62 focused envelope/session/copied-host tests, 48 synthetic complete-envelope budget cases (24 fitted packets and 24 expected minimum-envelope refusals), and the four existing TypeScript project checks. Those are scoped results, not whole-repository certification; remaining hosted checks and this static blocker still need resolution. Existing graph-composition assurance remains the owner rather than a new duplicate issue.
Scope the session-recovery review summary to its own implementation and test
acceptance. Keep unrelated dependency and messaging corrections on their
canonical records and existing review threads rather than introducing prose
references that imply new semantic relationships.
Record the hosted graph-gate failure and correction through the PM CLI. The
final graph-composition gate returns to the unchanged 1233 prose-gap ceiling,
and record-integrity passes after the final evidence entry. No graph threshold,
relationship, production source or closure evidence is weakened.
