fix(sdk): preserve transaction guards, compensation, and managed previews - #1595
Guarded SDK updates could commit scalar changes and then reject their own terminal transition, while compensation could report success with partial edits still present. Keep guards aligned with their own durable writes and reconcile partial steps only when exact history receipts prove ownership. Competing writes and ambiguous recovery preserve the journal and return an actionable refusal.
Transaction previews now skip derived managed-package dependency trees before traversal, while explicit schema and item storage remain authoritative. The receipt discloses the exclusion. SDK documentation, public contracts, generated error catalog, regressions, PM evidence and package-generated changelog ship together.
154 focused SDK/store/CLI/MCP tests pass; independent Node 26 and Bun controls pass against the same public SDK bundle.
Canonical full-source run: 865 test files, 11,423 tests pass, three skipped, exact 100/100/100/100 coverage. Pre-fix controls reproduce the original defects.
Latest pm-changelog 2026.10.25 generates both entries under Unreleased and passes its check; defect-evidence gate has zero findings.
Tracker history has zero drift; security alerts and production dependency audit are clear. Historical resolution metadata warnings are retained.
Public 2026.10.25 npm/npx/bunx/MCP and npm/Bun installed-agent acceptance pass. This batch postdates that daily release. Rolling release/nightly reliability findings remain recorded under their existing owners.
New reports are intake only: #1593 is tracked by pm-gh1593; #1594 reuses pm-69vv. Both have canonical PM-link comments. The queued telemetry and isolated linked-test receipt observations remain unclaimed; this PR does not claim them implemented.
Keep a matching transaction guard aligned only with its own durable writes,
including scalar updates followed by a terminal transition. Attribute internal
writes to their exact step and opt item updates into partial-step compensation.
Bind recovery to retained history fingerprints and exact versions, refuse
ambiguous or competing effects, and recheck restoration under the item lock.
Exclude derived managed-package dependency trees from transaction previews
while retaining explicit schema and item storage as authoritative inputs.
Disclose that exclusion in preview constraints and preserve source bytes.
Add lifecycle, frozen-clock, peer-race, corrupted-receipt, replay and CLI/MCP
preview regressions, update SDK and error contracts, and document the behavior.
Include PM evidence, generated changelog, release/dependency census and the
canonical intake links for the newly reported history and metadata requests.
Validation: 154 focused cases and direct Node/Bun public SDK controls pass.
The unchanged implementation has canonical full-source coverage evidence:
11,423 passing tests with exact 100/100/100/100 coverage. Changelog and defect
evidence checks pass. Complete hosted static, coverage and analyzer checks
remain mandatory before merge.
PM: pm-pllp78, pm-jhkzk0
Transaction previews now exclude derived extension dependency folders and report this as an unresolved commit constraint.
Workspace transactions can opt in to compensating steps that are still reported as pending.
Bug Fixes
Transaction recovery now checks whether history changes belong to the transaction before restoring, preserving unrelated edits and reporting partial-mutation conflicts when safe recovery cannot be verified.
Improved reporting for context-snapshot refreshes and guarded terminal-update conflicts and recovery.
Documentation
Updated SDK guidance on compensation, recovery, and preview constraints.
The PR adds guarded transaction recovery and pending-step compensation, updates managed-extension transaction previews to exclude derived dependencies, and records related project status and investigation updates.
Item-store writes now include scoped precondition history context and advance matching conditions after commit. Restore checks preconditions under lock.
Compensation checks history ownership and guards restoration. Workspace rollback can compensate opted-in steps that remain pending. Tests cover guarded updates, partial effects, and recovery; the public contract and documentation record the behavior.
Preview staging excludes extension dependency trees unless a retained path overlaps them. Preview results report the exclusion as an unresolved commit constraint. Tests cover dependency symlinks and retained schema and item paths.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 0434c
The SDK transaction, compensation and preview changes show no concrete defect. One tracker record contains misleading guidance for a future cache-validation fix; it should be clarified through pm, and it does not affect runtime behavior.

Explanation
Issue #1591 requires safe guarded terminal updates, stale-guard refusal before mutation, truthful partial-mutation recovery, and regression coverage. The SDK now advances matching preconditions after owned writes, refreshes the committed guard value for later lifecycle steps, and uses history fingerprints, versions, and ownership checks during compensation. Ambiguous or competing changes return transaction_partial_mutation without overwriting them. The added guarded-terminal tests cover successful update-and-close, stale guards, lifecycle/history state, partial writes, competing writes, and compensation receipts.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The PR description is specific and related to the changeset. It describes guarded SDK updates and compensation in the transaction code, transaction previews that skip derived managed-package dependency trees, the public contract and documentation updates, regression tests, and PM evidence. It also links the implemented PM items and closes issue #1591, which matches the objectives and the raw summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR also changes preview traversal to exclude derived extension node_modules trees, adds derived_extension_dependencies_excluded receipt constraints, and adds preview integration and unit tests. These changes implement the separate managed-preview feature described by closed pm-jhkzk0; they do not support the active linked issue #1591's guarded terminal update or compensation requirements. The related documentation and changelog entries for that preview feature are also outside #1591's scope.
Resolution
Move the managed-preview implementation, preview tests, preview documentation, and related changelog or PM changes to a separate pull request linked to its active feature, or provide an active directly linked issue that makes this preview work part of the requested scope.

The PR hardens SDK workspace transactions by keeping guards synchronized with their own durable writes, using exact immutable history receipts for safe compensation and refusing ambiguous recovery, while excluding derived managed-package dependency trees from previews with explicit receipt disclosure; it also updates contracts, tests, documentation, changelog, and PM evidence.

Align guarded item mutations and compensation with durable ownership and transaction state.
Advance match guards after the transaction’s own committed write so subsequent lifecycle operations accept it.
Attach transaction-step attribution to immutable history and capture hash, length, and version receipts.
Compensate pending partial applies when opted in, while retaining journals and returning actionable partial-mutation conflicts for ambiguous or competing changes.
Recheck ownership under locks before restore and preserve peer edits, including legacy timestamp-receipt compatibility.
Allow a guarded update that changes scalar fields and then performs a terminal lifecycle transition to succeed when its starting guard matches, while still refusing stale starting values before any item or history write and preserving lock-held protection against peer writes.
Ensure partial update effects are either safely compensated or explicitly retained for recovery, with history receipts proving ownership and journal state that does not falsely report successful compensation.
