pip install pipecat-moss is broken for new installs:

  • Python 3.12: 0.0.3 with pipecat-ai 1.13 fails with ImportError: cannot import name 'LLMMessagesFrame' (removed in pipecat 1.8).
  • Python 3.14: pip falls back to 0.0.2 (0.0.3 caps python <3.14), which imports AddDocumentsOptions from the old inferedge_moss.
  • Installed next to moss 1.20: both ship the moss_core module (0.8.7 vs 0.34.0), so from moss_core import Index fails.
  • The 0.0.3 on PyPI was built from code that isn't in this repo.

This PR:

  • Depends on moss>=1.20,<2 and pipecat-ai>=1.8,<2, requires Python 3.11+.
  • Moves from OpenAILLMContext / create_context_aggregator to LLMContext + LLMContextAggregatorPair.
  • Adds tests (pass on pipecat 1.13 and 1.8); bumps the version to 0.1.0.

Covers what #4 and #5 each fix in part. Once merged, publish with the "Publish pipecat-moss" workflow. The docs page integrations/pipecat.mdx will need the new pin and API names.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Moss credentials can now be read from environment variables when not provided explicitly.
    • Retrieval results are added to LLM context, and unrelated frames pass through without triggering retrieval.
  • Compatibility
    • Version 0.1.0 requires Python 3.11+ and supports moss 1.x and Pipecat 1.8–1.x.
    • Retrieval processing no longer adapts OpenAILLMContextFrame or LLMMessagesFrame.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, compatibility, query-option, and Moss Portal links.

📝 Walkthrough

The package updates its Moss SDK and Pipecat requirements, credential resolution, and retrieval frame handling. It adds tests for retrieval and credentials, updates examples and compatibility documentation, and changes the publishing Python matrix.

Changes: Moss SDK and Pipecat compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
SDK dependencies and package exports
pyproject.toml, src/pipecat_moss/__init__.py
The project now requires Python 3.11+, moss>=1.20.0,<2, and Pipecat versions >=1.8,<2. Package exports replace AddDocumentsOptions with MutationOptions and QueryOptions.
Credential and retrieval processing
src/pipecat_moss/moss_retrieval_service.py, src/pipecat_moss/moss_index_processor.py, tests/test_moss_index_processor.py
The service falls back to Moss environment variables when credentials are not provided and raises ValueError if credentials remain missing. The processor queries with QueryOptions, retrieves only for LLMContextFrame, and forwards the original frame. Tests cover retrieval, frame forwarding, repeated queries, and credential handling.
Release, compatibility, and examples
CHANGELOG.md, README.md, examples/*, .github/workflows/publish.yml
The release notes, compatibility guidance, and examples reflect the SDK and API updates. The build matrix now includes Python 3.14; publishing and release tagging remain limited to Python 3.11.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1238b

Retrieval augmentation can give Gemini the retrieved text as a later user turn, and a context containing a provider-specific message can make the processor drop the frame and emit an error. Fix both in the processor before merging.

Skip provider-specific messages when finding the user query.

With the newly handled LLMContextFrame, a valid LLMContext can contain an LLMSpecificMessage after its latest user message. Pipecat 1.8 returns that object from get_messages(), but it has no .get() method. The scan raises AttributeError; process_frame then emits an error and does not forward the context frame. Check for a standard dict message before reading its role. (github.com)

In the message scan within process_frame, check that each message is a standard
dict before calling get("role"); skip non-dict provider-specific messages and
continue finding the latest user message.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Keep retrieved text associated with the query for Gemini.

When this universal context frame goes to Pipecat 1.8’s Gemini adapter, context.add_message({"role": "system", ...}) has appended the retrieved text after the user query. The adapter converts non-initial system messages to user messages. Gemini therefore receives the retrieved text as a later user turn, not as system context for the query. Place the retrieval text in a provider-neutral part of the query context before forwarding the frame. (github.com)
