docs(landing): correct service map edges and stale claims on the OTel conventions page - #1066
Conversation
… conventions page The Service Map section told customers that peer.service draws edges. Edges come from a Client/Producer span joined to its child Server/Consumer span in the callee, so the section now explains trace-context propagation, db.system.name + db.namespace database nodes, and external nodes keyed on messaging, rpc and server.address. Other fixes checked against the code: retention is 30 days for traces and logs and 90 for metrics; cache spans are detected by cache.system or cache.result only; the error banner collapses past 3 lines or 160 characters; log rows show every chip; ingest converts status codes; keys live under Settings > Ingestion; platform badges limited to what exists.

| ### 2. Database nodes | ||

| Pair `db.system.name` with `peer.service` on the same `Client` span — both are required. The map aggregates by `db.system.name`, so multiple services calling the same database land on a single shared node. (The legacy `db.system` spelling is also accepted as a fallback.) | ||
| Set `db.system.name` and `db.namespace` on database `Client` spans. The legacy `db.system` spelling is also accepted. Maple keys each database node on the pair, so services that call the same database share one node. | ||

| ### 3. Pick canonical names | ||
| Without `db.system.name`, the call renders as a generic external host. Without `db.namespace`, Maple falls back to the legacy `db.name`, then to the host (`server.address`). With none of these set, every database behind that driver collapses into one node. | ||

Use the coalesced database-system predicate for external edges.
The documentation accepts legacy db.system, but serviceExternalEdgesSQL excludes only spans with db.system.name. A Client or Producer span with only db.system=postgresql can therefore appear as both a database edge and an HTTP external edge. Missing db.namespace does not cause this type change; the database query applies the documented namespace fallback.

Valid bug, but not fixed here: the same db.system.name = '' predicate lives in service_external_edges_hourly_mv (migration 0020), and the rollup splices MV and raw rows, so changing only serviceExternalEdgesSQL would make them disagree. It needs a CH migration plus a local-schema bump; tracked as a separate change. Diagram fences now carry a text language (MD040).

@Makisuo, thanks for the clarification. I verified that migration 0020 uses db.system.name = '' in service_external_edges_hourly_mv. The raw external-edge query uses the same predicate, while the database-edge query accepts legacy db.system. A fix needs to keep the materialized view and raw query consistent. I also verified the text diagram fences.
The database-system finding remains open for the separate change.

Learning: In Maple's ClickHouse service map, `packages/query-engine/src/ch/queries/service-map.ts` combines hourly materialized-view rows with raw trace rows for `serviceExternalEdgesSQL()`. When changing the database-system exclusion predicate, update both the raw query and the `service_external_edges_hourly_mv` definition through a ClickHouse migration, with the corresponding local-schema version bump. Migration 0020 currently excludes only `db.system.name`, while database edges also accept legacy `db.system`.
