Add an openai-compatible provider, tested against NativeServer, llama-server and OpenRouter - #252
Adds an openai-compatible provider: a model definition can now run on any OpenAI-compatible
chat-completions API instead of a local GGUF — OpenRouter (the default baseUrl), a llama.cpp llama-server, jllama's NativeServer, or anything else answering POST <baseUrl>/chat/completions.
Local stays the default; nothing leaves the machine unless a model says openai-compatible.
Four new per-model settings, threaded like devices through AiModelDefinition → AiGenerationConfig → LlamaCppJniConfig (+ builder) → LlamaCppJniConfigFactory:
provider — overrides the run's generationProvider for this model, so one run can route some
files to a local GGUF and others to a remote model (AiGenerationProviderFactory.effectiveProvider);
remoteModel — the request's model (e.g. openai/gpt-6-luna); empty sends none, which a
single-model llama-server / NativeServer accepts;
baseUrl — default https://openrouter.ai/api/v1;
apiKeyEnv — the name of the env var with the key (default OPENROUTER_API_KEY), sent as Authorization: Bearer; unset/empty sends none. The key never goes into a configuration.
OpenAiCompatibleAiGenerationProvider (HttpURLConnection, Java 8): same system prompt and user
message as the JNI provider, response parsed by the same ChatResponseParser + AiCompletionParser
(thinking blocks stripped, truncation warning on finish_reason=length). Sends only the portable
sampling knobs (max_tokens, temperature, top_p, top_k/min_p when positive, repetition_penalty, seed when set, stop, reasoning.effort). Non-2xx fails with status and
the start of the error body; no retries. generateWithTimings reports usage and a wall-clock
decode rate (prefill rate 0 = unknown).
Split for the PIT gate like LlamaCppJniProviderSupport: the pure logic (body, endpoint, key
lookup, status check, error message, timings) is OpenAiCompatibleProviderSupport, added to targetClasses; the socket code stays in the provider and is covered by stub-server tests.
Pre-run validation is per model now: EngineSupport.validateRoutedModelPaths uses each model's
effective provider, so a remote model needs no GGUF even in a llamacpp-jni run and instead must
name an http(s)baseUrl; a model that names llamacpp-jni itself is checked even in a mock run.
SpotBugs: the provider itself rejects a non-http(s)baseUrl (so file: never reaches openConnection); the find-sec-bugs URLCONNECTION_SSRF_FD on post is excluded with that reasoning — the URL is the user's own configuration. No setFixedLengthStreamingMode: in streaming mode HttpURLConnection drops the body of a 401, which is the one that says the key is wrong.
CI tests the provider against three real APIs on every run (test job of publish.yml, no
new workflow), each in addition to the others and to the existing JNI tests:
jllama NativeServer, started in-process by OpenAiCompatibleLiveTest on the committed SmolLM2
GGUF;
a llama.cpp llama-server container (server-b11946, pinned by digest) on the same GGUF;
OpenRouter with openai/gpt-6-luna and the OPENROUTER_API_KEY secret (~$0.00005 per run).
A step then checks the Surefire report: all three must have run; only OpenRouter may skip, and
only in a run without the secret (fork or Dependabot pull request, with a warning).
API keys never go out in cleartext to another machine: a key is sent over https, or over
plain http to a loopback host only (localhost, a 127.x.x.x literal, [::1]); anything else
fails before the connection is opened (CodeRabbit, CWE-319). The running-server live test reads no
key by default.
modelPath is @Nullable on AiGenerationConfig / AiModelDefinition (it is null until set,
as its Javadoc already said); this fixes the Sonar reliability finding. validateRoutedModelPaths
is split into validateRemoteModel / validateLocalModel; the PATH_TRAVERSAL_IN exclusion
follows the moved code.
jackson-databind declared explicitly in srcmorph (+ requires in module-info), on the
parent-managed version that net.ladenthin:llama already brings.
Docs: README, plugin README (parameter table + example), CLAUDE.md (design principle 1 now "local by
default, remote opt-in"), CHANGELOG.
Test plan
Full reactor mvn install (JDK 25, Docker) with requireNativeLlama and all three live APIs,
exactly as CI runs it: BUILD SUCCESS, srcmorph 732 / cli 40 / plugin 32 tests, 0 failures
PIT over srcmorph: 919/919 mutations killed (100%), OpenAiCompatibleProviderSupport included
OpenAiCompatibleLiveTest: 3 run, 0 skipped. OpenRouter answered 70 prompt / 97 generated
tokens with a correct summary of the test class; llama-server and NativeServer (SmolLM2)
answered with text and token counts
Added an OpenAI-compatible option for AI generation, configurable per model or through the run-level provider setting. Connect to compatible services such as OpenRouter or llama-server, with options for the model, endpoint, and API key.
Remote generation uses the existing prompt and response handling. API keys are protected from transmission over plain HTTP to non-local hosts.
Documentation
Updated the project guides with provider setup, configuration, and behavior details.
Tests
Added coverage for local and remote provider behavior, including live integration checks against compatible servers.
A model definition can now run on any OpenAI-compatible chat-completions
API instead of a local GGUF: OpenRouter (the default baseUrl), a llama.cpp
llama-server, jllama's NativeServer, or any server answering
POST <baseUrl>/chat/completions. Local stays the default.
Four new per-model settings, threaded like devices through
AiModelDefinition, AiGenerationConfig, LlamaCppJniConfig and its factory:
provider (overrides the run's generationProvider for this model),
remoteModel, baseUrl and apiKeyEnv (the name of the environment variable
holding the key; the key never goes into a configuration).
The provider sends the same prompts as the JNI provider and only the
portable sampling knobs, and parses the answer with the same
ChatResponseParser and AiCompletionParser. Its pure logic lives in
OpenAiCompatibleProviderSupport, which joins the 100% PIT gate; the socket
code is covered by an in-process stub-server test. The pre-run validation
is per model now: a remote model needs no GGUF and must name an http(s)
baseUrl. OpenAiCompatibleLiveTest runs against a real server when
-Dnet.ladenthin.srcmorph.openai.baseUrl is set.

The change adds an OpenAI-compatible generation provider with per-model provider and endpoint settings. It routes requests to configured chat-completions endpoints, validates remote URLs and API-key transport, and adds unit, live-server, and CI coverage. Local llama.cpp remains the default.

Generation and model definitions add provider, remote model, base URL, and API-key environment settings. Conversion code passes these settings through, and model paths can be null. Tests cover defaults, null resets, and propagation.
Provider routing and model validation srcmorph/src/main/java/net/ladenthin/srcmorph/provider/AiGenerationProviderFactory.java, srcmorph/src/main/java/net/ladenthin/srcmorph/engine/EngineSupport.java, srcmorph/src/test/java/net/ladenthin/srcmorph/engine/EngineSupportTest.java, srcmorph/src/test/java/net/ladenthin/srcmorph/provider/AiGenerationProviderFactoryTest.java
The factory uses a nonblank model provider in preference to the run-level provider. Engine validation checks remote HTTP(S) URLs and validates JNI model files and GGUF metadata.
The provider sends chat-completions requests, optionally adds a Bearer API key, parses responses, reports timings, and throws on non-2xx responses. Supporting code validates endpoint schemes and restricts API keys over plain HTTP to loopback hosts. Build and analysis configuration adds Jackson support and provider coverage.
Live tests and provider documentation srcmorph/src/test/java/net/ladenthin/srcmorph/provider/OpenAiCompatibleLiveTest.java, .github/workflows/publish.yml, CHANGELOG.md, README.md, CLAUDE.md, srcmorph-maven-plugin/README.md
Live tests cover native-server, configured-server, and OpenRouter routes. CI starts a llama.cpp server and checks the expected live-test results. Project documentation describes provider settings and behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review ef815
Using a custom HTTPS endpoint without overriding the API-key variable can send the OpenRouter key to a third-party server. Consider requiring an explicit key variable for custom endpoints before merging; otherwise the change looks sound.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ef815
Remote generation is opt-in, but changing an endpoint can disclose an existing API key, and keyless HTTP exposes submitted source text in transit. Oversized responses can also exhaust the calling process’s memory. Configuration authority and file routing limit exposure, but deployment permissions and credential scope remain unverified.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The credential transport guard does not protect source confidentiality when no key is available: a configured non-loopback HTTP endpoint receives prompts and source text in cleartext. This is intentionally supported, not a bypass of the keyed-HTTP restriction, but introduces exposure to on-path observation and modification for runs choosing that configuration.
Medium · security · observed: Endpoint and credential selection are independent. Changing only baseUrl to another HTTPS service, or to an allowed loopback service, retains OPENROUTER_API_KEY as the default credential source and sends its populated value to that service. Endpoint configurators therefore control credential destination without an endpoint-to-secret association. Unauthorized configuration control is not established.
Medium · security · inferred: A malicious or compromised configured service can threaten the invoking process’s availability with an oversized response. Both success and error streams are buffered until EOF without a byte limit; the 500-character error excerpt is applied only after buffering. Read timeouts and connection cleanup do not bound total response size or resulting heap consumption.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Exposure encompasses source text and prompts routed to remote models, populated environment variables selected as credentials, and the invoking process’s memory. A run-level remote choice can affect multiple inheriting models, while model overrides permit narrower routing. Downstream credential privileges and deployment-wide or tenant scope are not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained cleartext finding requires remote routing to a non-loopback HTTP endpoint without a populated key. An on-path actor can then observe or alter submitted data. The path is documented and tested, so it is a deliberate transport exposure rather than evidence of failed enforcement of the key-only guard.
inferred — The retained credential finding can arise from changing the endpoint while leaving its default credential selector unchanged. A destination operator receives the selected populated secret; an adversary redirecting it through configuration would need configuration-editing authority. The code establishes that flow, but not unauthorized access to configuration or the secret’s downstream permissions.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The request boundary permits only HTTP(S). A populated credential for non-loopback HTTP is rejected before opening the connection; recognized loopback hosts are explicitly matched. These controls protect direct credential transport but do not associate a credential with a particular HTTPS service or require encrypted transport for keyless source data.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Connection cleanup contains ordinary request failures, but the external response boundary lacks a size limit. A service need not honor the requested token budget, and even an error response is fully buffered before its displayed excerpt is shortened, allowing failure of one dependency to threaten the whole calling process.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Associate allowed endpoint origins with explicit credential references in trusted configuration, and require deliberate credential selection when overriding the default endpoint.
proposed — Require HTTPS for non-loopback source transmission by default, with a separate explicit acknowledgement if keyless cleartext compatibility must remain supported.
proposed — Bound successful and error response bytes before buffering, and define explicit redirect, transport-replay, and cancellation behavior across supported runtimes.

The test job of publish.yml now runs OpenAiCompatibleLiveTest against
every API the openai-compatible provider supports, each in addition to the
others: jllama's NativeServer (started in-process on the committed SmolLM2

Do not send the default OpenRouter key to a custom endpoint.
If a model sets a custom HTTPS baseUrl but leaves apiKeyEnv at its default, the provider reads OPENROUTER_API_KEY and sends it in the Authorization header to that endpoint. apiKeyFor checks the transport for HTTP requests, but it does not restrict which HTTPS host receives the key. Require an explicit apiKeyEnv for a custom endpoint, or clear the inherited key setting when the endpoint changes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

apiKeyEnv defaulted to OPENROUTER_API_KEY, so a model that only set a
custom https baseUrl sent the OpenRouter key to that host (CodeRabbit,
CWE-522; the earlier fix only kept keys off cleartext). The default is
empty now: a key goes only where a model names it, e.g.
<apiKeyEnv>OPENROUTER_API_KEY</apiKeyEnv> for OpenRouter. 1.4.0 is not
released, so no configuration relies on the old default.
A new test pins the reported case: OPENROUTER_API_KEY set, default
config, custom https endpoint, no key sent. The plugin README's example
and the CHANGELOG name apiKeyEnv explicitly.

@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding "Do not send the default OpenRouter key to a custom endpoint" (AiGenerationConfig.java:460-461, CWE-522) is fixed in dbd65f3: apiKeyEnv now defaults to empty, so no key is sent unless a model names its variable (<apiKeyEnv>OPENROUTER_API_KEY</apiKeyEnv> for OpenRouter). A custom httpsbaseUrl therefore never inherits the OpenRouter key. OpenAiCompatibleProviderSupportTest.apiKeyFor_defaultConfigWithACustomHttpsEndpoint_sendsNoKey pins the reported case; the README example and CHANGELOG name apiKeyEnv explicitly.
@bernardladenthin Verified by source inspection at dbd65f3. The change addresses the reported CWE-522 finding.
DEFAULT_API_KEY_ENV is empty, and apiKey() returns null before environment lookup when no variable is named.
The regression test covers a custom HTTPS endpoint with OPENROUTER_API_KEY present and expects no key.
The README example and CHANGELOG document explicit apiKeyEnv configuration.
I did not run the tests.
