Summary

  • Make readable reasoning retention an explicit opt-in under Dashboard → Overview → Advanced settings, off by default. Only reasoningRetention.enabled: true enables it; omitted, false, and legacy threshold-only blocks retain ordinary compaction behavior.
  • When enabled, keep readable reasoning local while routed v1 /responses/compact and routed v2 compaction_trigger summarize other context. Restore exact text as framed historical context after a successful readable summary.
  • Keep v2 output to one compaction item. The versioned proxy-owned ocx2: JSON/Base64 envelope separates summary and retained reasoning across replay, repeated compaction, emergency recovery (JSON/SSE), and explicit native-history recovery. Existing ocx1: summaries and native/opaque protocols remain compatible; provider-private ciphertext is not decrypted.
  • Apply the smaller configured context-window percentage/token cap (when enabled, defaults are 20% and 100,000 estimated tokens, including framing; unknown windows use the absolute cap). Overflow is stored under the resolved OpenCodex home's reasoning-archive/. These are per-request/in-context bounds, not an aggregate archive quota: successful files have no automatic expiry and require manual deletion, including after disabling/resetting. Crash and filesystem-cleanup limitations are documented.
  • Preserve provisional archive cleanup on failed/incomplete/cancelled/empty/opaque outcomes and internal retry reuse. Fix archive commit after failed SSE completion-frame delivery and clean up partial writes only after successful exclusive creation, preserving existing files on collision.
  • Merge current dev at 7640a942b, keep new runtime logic in sibling modules, and preserve the capped core and Lab import-graph boundary. Update settings, all locale copy, and runtime/public documentation.

Verification

Current head: 5f702e1ba0498636adedc706551757f720fd9289 (2026-10-15 UTC)

Fresh completed focused subsets: 178 network-free backend cases and 14 GUI cases. Earlier totals below are historical and are not current-head results. Tests used the verified Bun 1.4.3 runner; repository home/credential sandboxing remained enabled.

  • Settings/config: 9 passed; Responses core modules: 10 passed; Lab boundary: 25 passed.
  • bun test --isolate tests/responses/reasoning-retention.test.ts tests/responses/responses-compaction.test.ts: 60 passed, 205 assertions.
  • bun test --isolate tests/adapters/translator-budget-lifetime.test.ts tests/codex-integration/history-ocx-compaction-recovery.test.ts tests/responses/compaction-continuation-note.test.ts: 55 passed, 293 assertions.
  • Selected network-free reasoning-retention-v2.test.ts preparation/cancellation/encoding cases: 9 passed, 33 assertions; the new completed-frame overflow regression adds 1 passed, 6 assertions, proven red before the fix and green afterward. Other public-route v2 cases are not counted.
  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 9 passed, 85 assertions. Its initial pre-staging scan saw duplicate unmerged index entries; the final resolved-index run passed.
  • cd gui && bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate tests/reasoning-retention-panel.test.tsx: 14 passed, 85 assertions. GUI i18n lint and production build passed; the existing chunk-size advisory remains.
  • Root typecheck, structure check, privacy scan, and the PR diff whitespace check against actual dev passed.
  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build: passed, 577 pages and 81,203 internal links. Astro's config path was scoped to cloud scratch; no proxy settings were changed.
  • Independent static review found two archive-lifecycle issues; both were fixed with regressions and re-reviewed with no remaining blocking finding in the inspected changes.
  • Fetching the published fork branch verified the exact full tree 3b1c466b80a4cc46a32deae3cf01a4cb6cf78465, ordered parents ef7da37c6 + 7640a942b, and a clean checkout. GitHub reports mergeable: true; this remains draft.

Coverage limits: the public-route mocked-network invocation was interrupted after the inherited SOCKS transport bypassed global fetch mocks and returned 502 responses. It is incomplete and is not passing evidence; no proxy workaround was used. The previously prohibited opaque-blob/compaction-override files were not rerun. Full repository/full GUI suites, live account/ciphertext acceptance, process-termination/denied-deletion behavior, and current browser UI validation were not performed. The earlier screenshot below predates the new placement and is historical only.

Exact-head CI: Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts, and React Doctor are action_required, pending maintainer approval. CodeRabbit's success status is a draft skip; its current comment says “Draft PR not reviewed” and references an older assessment. Runtime CI and maintainer/security acceptance remain pending, including assessment of the explicitly documented absence of an aggregate archive quota.

Historical verification carried from the prior description

  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts — 11 passed, 0 failed. These read-as-data gates were run explicitly.
  • cd gui && bun test tests/reasoning-retention-panel.test.tsx — 8 passed, 0 failed.
  • Replay-unsafe runTurn error/EOF regressions were verified red before preserving cleanup classifications (2 failures) and green after the fix.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check — passed.
  • cd gui && bun run lint:i18n && bun run build — passed.
  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build — passed (561 pages; 78,114 internal links).

Test invocations removed this environment's HTTP(S)/ALL proxy variables and used OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 to avoid test-run lock contention in isolated command sessions. Home/credential sandboxing remained enabled.

The unrestricted bun run test:changed attempts were interrupted without a completed result and are not counted as passing. The full repository suite and live 10100/runtime verification were not run. Process termination and filesystem-denied archive deletion were not exercised. This remains a draft pending broader CI and maintainer review, including the default retention/archive policy and Overview placement.

  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

The auto-generated release summary below is historical and predates the current explicit default-off policy described above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Routed v1 compaction can retain readable reasoning as historical context after a successful summary. Retention uses the lower of a configurable context-window percentage and token limit; defaults are 20% and 100,000 tokens.
    • Reasoning above the limit is archived locally, with a notice pointing to the archive. Failed compaction does not return replacement history.
    • Dashboard settings let you adjust or reset retention limits.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration and compaction documentation, including which compaction paths remain unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds configurable reasoning retention for routed v1 compaction. The flow retains readable reasoning as historical context when it fits configured limits and archives excess text locally. A new dashboard panel manages the limits, and configuration and behavior are documented.

Changes: Reasoning Retention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration and settings API
src/types/config.ts, src/config/schema/*, src/config/diagnostics.ts, src/config/load-degrade.ts, src/server/management/config-routes.ts, tests/config/settings-reasoning-retention.test.ts, structure/config.md, structure/gui-and-management-api.md, test layout files
Adds optional context-percentage and token limits, validates settings, warns when malformed disk values fall back to defaults, and exposes the setting through GET/PUT. Tests cover validation, updates, reset, and rollback after failed saves.
Retention and compaction flow
src/responses/reasoning-retention.ts, src/server/responses/compact.ts, tests/responses/reasoning-retention*.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/server.md, structure/overview.md, structure/runtime.md, structure/transports/responses-failover.md, test layout files
Extracts readable reasoning, removes it from routed compaction input, and retains or archives it according to the effective limit. Successful compaction returns retained text as history or adds an archive notice. Tests and documentation cover failure and unchanged opaque, native, and direct v2 cases.
Dashboard retention controls
gui/src/components/ReasoningRetentionPanel.tsx, gui/src/pages/dashboard-overview-panels.tsx, gui/src/i18n/*, gui/tests/reasoning-retention-panel.test.tsx, structure/dashboard-and-usage.md
Adds a dashboard panel to load, validate, save, and reset retention settings. Translations and UI tests cover defaults, input validation, request failures, retries, pending saves, and stale responses.

Failed compaction retries can leave extra reasoning archives, while some users cannot identify invalid dashboard fields or read the archive notice in their language. Resolve the archive lifecycle before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d9191

Potentially sensitive reasoning now persists locally. Failed, cancelled, or repeated operations can leave copies without a bounded storage lifecycle. Authentication and private-file permissions limit exposure, but they do not prevent cumulative storage growth or establish deployed ownership.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new overflow archive lacks a bounded lifecycle. Plaintext is written before compaction succeeds and survives downstream failures, cancellation, and opaque success without a returned archive notice. Repeated admitted requests can accumulate separate sensitive copies on the shared configuration volume, increasing retention exposure and potentially impairing service availability. Individual request limits and private-file modes do not bound cumulative storage.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently reachable sink is the reasoning archive under one process-wide configuration directory. Admitted callers control archived text but not its destination. Cumulative writes can affect that volume and co-resident service state; wider host, tenant, or environment exposure depends on deployment isolation and remains unresolved.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An admitted caller can repeatedly submit over-limit readable reasoning, causing a new plaintext file before each downstream result is known. Failed or cancelled attempts retain those writes. This supports a cumulative storage-pressure and sensitive-copy accumulation concern, not a demonstrated authentication bypass, arbitrary-path write, or cross-user read.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Compaction remains behind existing data-plane admission and origin checks. The new settings flow is dispatched after the management authentication gate and uses server-side schema validation rather than relying solely on dashboard validation.
  • observed — Portable retained history contains readable text framed as historical context, not provider-private signatures or opaque ciphertext. Opaque compaction results are returned without decrypting or replacing their ciphertext.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Inbound body limits bound individual submissions, and exclusive creation avoids overwriting an existing archive. Neither provides aggregate archive quotas, retry deduplication, or recovery ownership. Successful readable-summary notices identify only that invocation's file.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define archive ownership and an explicit byte/age retention policy. Record recoverable references across failure and opaque outcomes, and make repeated attempts deduplicated or quota-accounted without silently deleting reasoning users expect to preserve.
  • proposed — Validate archive-directory ownership, permissions and platform ACLs, including pre-existing directories, and document whether isolation is per service or per tenant. Treat parent-directory hardening as counterevidence rather than a substitute for deployment verification.

Associate validation feedback with only the invalid field.

The role="alert" announces a message with both fields’ requirements, but neither input is programmatically associated with that message or exposes its own invalid state. Split the validity checks by field. Do not use combined valid for both inputs: that would mark a valid field invalid whenever the other field fails.

Localize the archive notice. Do not hardcode Chinese text.

appendRetentionNotice always appends a Chinese notice ([推理保留提示] … 已归档到本地文件 …) to the compaction summary. The summary returns to every client and every next model, whatever the conversation language. An English-speaking user then sees an untranslated block in their replacement history. The archive note at Lines 136-140 is in English, so the two notices use different languages for the same event. The docs (docs-site/.../server.md Line 757) say only that the summary "includes a notice naming that file". They do not mention Chinese text.

Use English text to match the summarizer note. Keep the path and token figures. Update the assertions in tests/responses/reasoning-retention.test.ts (Lines 102, 214) and tests/responses/reasoning-retention-routing.test.ts (Line 172).

Remove or reuse archives from failed compaction attempts.

For over-limit reasoning, applyReasoningRetention writes a uniquely named full-text archive before handleResponses runs. A non-OK response or later validation error returns without deleting it. Each retry can write another file; if a retry succeeds, its summary notice names only that attempt’s archive, leaving earlier copies unreferenced. Delete the provisional archive on unsuccessful exits or reuse it across retries. Keep it only when a returned readable summary references it.

Scoped compaction correctness review of d919181e23d19de41905d37c31cf6cb3f433570b against dev e53c8077e40b6f540bf1e5d5791a55282466bfac.

The checked-in tests/responses/reasoning-retention.test.ts passes independently: 16 pass / 0 fail. Two additional review-only fixtures fail the retained-replay budget check; see the inline P2. This is measured with the same estimateTokens helper used by the implementation, not a claim about a provider's exact tokenizer.

Please enforce the context-share bound on the representation that is actually returned for replay, including per-block framing, and add regression coverage for many short reasoning items, known/unknown windows, and near-cap behavior. Counting only the unframed payload is insufficient when the transformation expands it before it becomes replacement history.

I ran only these two files, not routing/API/GUI/full-suite/typecheck validation. Local tests used Bun 1.4.0 as ubuntu in a fresh isolated home under verified CPU 75%, MemoryHigh 1280 MiB / MemoryMax 1536 MiB, swap 0, TasksMax 64 and a 120-second deadline. No live client/provider calls or new scans; protected local files were unchanged.

Keep the PR draft while the fix, exact-head validation and readiness checklist are outstanding. Cross-platform CI 37243704432 and React Doctor 37243704363 remain action_required, not passing runtime/build evidence. The new default retention/archive behavior and Overview UI still need the owner's product decision; this review does not approve those choices or replace any required independent boundary review.

[P2] Include retained-message framing in the context budget

The cap is checked on texts.join("\n"), but each retained item then gains RETAINED_PREFIX and RETAINED_SUFFIX. compact.ts appends all of these expanded messages to replacement history. With 100 reasoning items containing "x", maxTokens: 100, maxContextPercent: 20, and contextWindow: 1000, this helper counts 50 payload tokens and does not archive, yet the returned message text estimates to 3,475 tokens with the same helper—more than the entire configured context window, even before the summary/history. The unknown-window variant also retains 3,475 estimated tokens under a nominal 100-token cap.

Budget the final framed representation before choosing retention vs archive (or use a bounded shared frame with equivalent semantics). Add a many-small-items regression and near-boundary cases so successful compaction does not return an oversized retained context.

Keep readable reasoning separate from summaries across streaming, emergency recovery, repeated compaction and explicit native-history recovery. Reuse retention limits and provisional archive cleanup, preserve native ciphertext and legacy ocx1 envelopes, and retain retry classifications through response cleanup.

Updated head: 31eaa7e7, merging dev at 042b3ac9 into the previous head f0e7df96. Resolved the locale/config conflicts while preserving both sides. The four earlier review findings were already fixed in the existing commits; those fixes and regression coverage are preserved.

Validation: 181 focused root tests and 26 GUI tests passed. After dev advanced, 28 layout/ratchet tests were rerun and passed: 235 successful test executions in total, including reruns. Typecheck, privacy/structure gates, diff check, i18n lint and the GUI production build passed.

The routing/recovery suites affected by the sandbox's mocked-fetch/SOCKS-proxy restriction were not run. Full-suite and browser UI validation remain unrun; this PR stays draft.

Cross-platform CI (37877442702) and React Doctor (37877442642) are both action_required for this exact head. Could a maintainer approve these workflow runs?

Preserve recursive Responses dispatch and runTurn/nonreplayable classifications alongside upstream abort-owned translator budget cleanup. Add classification/abort/cancel coverage, including an outer serving-account lease.

Validation: 242 targeted tests passed across 12 files; typecheck, structure and privacy scans, layout/file-size ratchet and diff checks passed. Full suite and mocked-fetch/raw-SOCKS routing suites remain unrun in this cloud sandbox. GUI and browser UI validation were not rerun for this merge.

Updated head: 8d6ab503, merging dev at 68c9d354 into 31eaa7e7. The new conflicts are resolved with both contracts preserved: recursive Responses dispatch and runTurn/nonreplayable classifications, plus upstream abort-owned translator-budget cleanup. Added seven lifetime regressions, including an outer serving-account lease.

Validation on the merged tree: 42 lifetime/core tests, 3 selected runTurn recovery tests, 169 safe retention/parser/abort tests, and 28 explicit layout/ratchet tests passed, for 242 tests across 12 files with no failures. Typecheck, privacy/structure gates and diff checks passed. An independent review found no actionable merge regression.

The full suite, remaining mocked-fetch routing/recovery suites and browser UI validation remain unrun in this sandbox. The PR stays draft. GitHub now reports mergeable: true; the remote tree and both ordered parents were verified after publication.

Exact-head Cross-platform CI and React Doctor are both action_required. Could a maintainer approve these workflow runs?

Keep the Codex WebSocket reuse initializer alongside the reasoning-retention degradation warning and preserve asynchronous initial-send booking ownership. Add two regression cases for retention warnings independent of the WebSocket setting; relocate one layout mapping entry without changing parsed data or ratchet limits.

Validation: 269 targeted root cases have passing results and 3 upstream WebSocket receipt cases fail in the inherited SOCKS environment; the affected tests and transport sources match dev. 26 GUI tests, locale lint, isolated GUI TypeScript projects and production Vite build passed. Root typecheck, structure/privacy and PR diff checks passed. Full suite and blocked mock-network suites remain unrun.

Updated head: ebd0db66, merging dev at a47a1b52 into 8d6ab503.

Resolved the config-load conflict by keeping both the WebSocket-reuse initializer and the value-free reasoning-retention warning, with two new regression cases. The combined layout registry reached the 2,000-line limit; one config entry now sits alongside its sibling, with the parsed mapping verified identical and no ratchet limit changes. Asynchronous initial-send booking ownership and retention classifications are preserved.

Validation: 269 targeted root cases have passing results, excluding diagnostic reruns. Three upstream WebSocket receipt cases failed because this environment's inherited SOCKS route disables the WebSocket lane before the fake socket is used; those tests and the relevant transport sources are identical to dev. No proxy settings were changed. The corrected ratchet passes all nine cases. All 26 focused GUI tests, locale lint, GUI TypeScript checks with separate local build-info files, and the production Vite build passed. Root typecheck, structure/privacy gates and the PR diff check against dev passed. An independent merge review found no actionable regression.

The full suite, previously blocked mocked-fetch routing suites and browser UI validation remain unrun. This PR stays draft; GitHub now reports mergeable: true, and the published tree and both ordered parents were verified by fetching the branch.

Exact-head Cross-platform CI and React Doctor are action_required. Could a maintainer approve these new workflow runs?

Move upstream native Responses-to-Chat adapter handoff and identity-guarded unused-hop cleanup into the extracted request pipeline, preserving retention delivery and disposal. Keep upstream cancellation and transport changes intact.

Validation: 300 targeted root tests and 26 GUI tests pass; root typecheck, structure, privacy, file-layout/ratchet, diff check, GUI i18n lint and isolated TypeScript/Vite build pass. Read-only merge audit found no actionable regression. Full suites, previously blocked opaque-blob/compaction-override paths, inherited SOCKS-sensitive WebSocket cases and interactive browser preview were not run.

Scoped follow-up at exact head cdf3233bff649713a9ecf257bb7a3f4bfa1cfa45, base 9f34ea78a05e719ba4165e6635f28fc2a90f24f5.

My retained-replay framing-budget P2 in review 5408757932 is corrected. applyReasoningRetention() now constructs every retained prefix/payload/suffix first and applies estimateTokens() to the complete replay text before selecting retention versus archive. The checked-in regressions cover the 100 one-character blocks (3,475 estimated framed tokens, archived under the 100-token cap) for both known and unknown windows; inclusive boundaries, one-token-over behavior, exact text, repeated replay without double framing, and archive-write failure also pass.

I independently ran bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 tests/responses/reasoning-retention.test.ts --timeout 20000: 21 pass / 0 fail, 80 assertions on ubuntu/Linux x64, Bun 1.4.0. Only this focused suite was run; no whole-PR routing/recovery/GUI/import-graph/full-suite/typecheck or live acceptance is claimed. The job used fresh private homes and no inherited live credentials, serially under verified CPUQuota75%, MemoryHigh1280M/MemoryMax1536M, swap0, TasksMax64, IOWeight20, nice10 and a 120-second deadline; protected live files remained unchanged. No scan, provider/native-client call or author-branch edit.

I am withdrawing only that old framing-budget change request, not approving the PR. Current-head Cross-platform CI 38050390542, React Doctor 38050390493 and Catalog async contracts remain awaiting execution approval; the author's documented broader coverage limits and the owner's default-retention/archive/UI decisions remain separate. Keep Draft until the full head-bound readiness and review requirements are satisfied.

The only textual conflict was the Responses module-ownership table. It now retains the PR's pipeline/retention owners and the upstream shadow-interception rules, including per-frame WebSocket metadata precedence. Upstream local spend-storage 503 mapping, Copilot handoff and retention lifetime/error classifications are preserved. An independent static merge review found no actionable regression.

Validation on the merged tree: 347 focused root tests passed across 17 files, including retention/framing, lifetime/parser/abort, layout/ratchet, selected runTurn recovery/storage refusal and no-network shadow-routing cases. All 26 focused GUI tests, i18n lint, root typecheck, privacy/structure gates, the PR diff check against dev, GUI TypeScript checks with isolated build-info files and the Vite production build passed.

The full suite and complete import-graph run remain unrun because their mocked-fetch transport fixtures can reach the inherited SOCKS route in this sandbox. Resolved the parser, request-scrubbing and Responses-document conflicts by preserving both structured ocx2: retention and the upstream checkpoint-continuation contract. Ordinary replay adds the continuation note while keeping the summary, retained reasoning and later user messages separate and ordered; summarizer turns exclude the note, and malformed proxy envelopes retain their explicit failure. Five new no-network regression cases cover that integration. Native ciphertext identity/capability gates and the default-off raw-reasoning replay option remain intact. An independent static review found no actionable merge regression. The Responses doc remains within its 600-line budget without raising it.

Validation on this tree with the pinned Bun 1.4.3 test runner: 367 focused root tests passed across 18 files and 36 focused GUI tests passed across 4 files. Root typecheck, privacy/structure gates, the PR diff check against dev, GUI i18n lint, GUI TypeScript checks with isolated build-info files and the production build passed.

Root commands (all bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1, with --timeout 20000):

  • 345 cases: tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/adapters/translator-budget-lifetime.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/config/settings-reasoning-retention.test.ts tests/codex-integration/history-ocx-compaction-recovery.test.ts tests/responses/responses-parser.test.ts tests/responses/compaction-event-ownership.test.ts tests/responses/responses-compaction.test.ts tests/responses/reasoning-retention.test.ts tests/responses/passthrough-abort.test.ts tests/responses/responses-compaction-recovery-policy.test.ts tests/responses/responses-core-modules.test.ts tests/responses/compaction-continuation-note.test.ts tests/responses/compaction-continuation-wire.test.ts.
  • 5 cases: tests/responses/reasoning-retention-v2.test.ts -t 'body cancellation cleans up|old envelopes and generic history recovery|malformed proxy envelopes fail explicitly'.
  • 3 cases: tests/responses/responses-compaction-recovery.test.ts -t 'runTurn emergency consumes|retained v2 compaction combo stops'.
  • 14 cases: tests/responses/responses-send-budget-errors.test.ts -t 'a spent send budget is reported|runTurn:|structured runTurn terminal|cause traversal terminates'.
  • GUI: cd gui && bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate tests/reasoning-retention-panel.test.tsx tests/locale-parity.test.ts tests/i18n-locales.test.ts tests/provider-settings-reasoning-replay.test.tsx.

The full suite and complete import-graph run remain unrun because their mocked-fetch transport fixtures can reach the inherited SOCKS route in this sandbox, with concurrent cloud work also favoring focused validation. Previously blocked mocked-fetch routing/recovery suites, the three SOCKS-sensitive WebSocket receipt cases, the docs-site build and browser UI validation were not run this round; no proxy settings were changed. This PR stays draft. GitHub reports mergeable: true; fetching the published branch verified the complete intended tree and both ordered parents.

Thanks @yuanyuanlove! Decision on the policy hold: we'll accept retaining readable reasoning across routed compaction as an explicit opt-in (default off) under advanced settings, with the archive-overflow lifecycle documented (where it is stored, how it is bounded, when it is deleted). Please also merge current dev; src/server/responses/core.ts is at its file-size cap, so the new logic needs to live in sibling modules, and it must stay outside the Lab import graph.

Default readable reasoning retention off unless explicitly enabled. Document local archive bounds and deletion lifecycle. Preserve provisional archive cleanup after failed completion delivery and filesystem writes.

@lidge-jun Implemented your Oct 15 direction in 5f702e1ba, merging current dev at 7640a942b.

  • Retention is now an Advanced settings opt-in, off by default; legacy limit-only blocks stay off.
  • Documented archive location, per-request/in-context bounds, manual deletion, and crash/I/O cleanup limits. Successful archives have no aggregate quota or automatic expiry; no new deletion policy was introduced.
  • Kept runtime logic in sibling modules outside the Lab graph and fixed two provisional-archive cleanup issues found during review.

Fresh completed focused subsets: 178 network-free backend tests and 14 GUI tests passed. Typecheck, structure/privacy and file-size gates, i18n lint, GUI build, and docs build (577 pages; 81,203 links) passed. The public-route proxy-affected invocation is incomplete, not passing evidence; full/live/browser validation remains unrun. Details and historical receipts are separated in the updated description.

The remote tree and ordered parents are verified; GitHub reports conflict-free, and the PR remains draft. Exact-head Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts, and React Doctor are action_required. Could a maintainer approve those runs? CodeRabbit's draft skip is not a current review.
