Summary

  • Describe reasoning support, thinking-toggle support, and effort adjustability separately; carry thinking enablement independently through requests.
  • Adapt public MiMo V2.6 as a toggle-only model family. Keep none/high aliases in effort-only client compatibility, preserving real effort controls and operator settings.

Verification

At 5b57a6030f, based on dev 8dd330a3f5, bun test --timeout 60000 passed 1,309 tests across 32 focused files (6,360 assertions) on Bun 1.4.4. Coverage includes the six maintainer findings, legacy Chat wire comparisons, native direct/compaction/failover normalization, capability discovery, and client exports. Typecheck, structure check, file-size ratchet, privacy scan, diff checks, and the documentation build (593 pages) passed.

Expanded validation remains incomplete. This round's OCX_TEST_MAIN_TIMEOUT_MS=180000 bun run test:changed selected 2,103/2,617 files and exited 124 at the time limit. It reported nine Windows symlink failures, a CodeBuddy compile timeout, two WS failures, and an Anthropic Fast PATCH 400. CodeBuddy passed alone (5 tests); the WS file passed in a separate run (one skip). The Fast failure reproduced independently on both the PR and unmodified dev 8dd330a3f5 (baseline: 7 pass, 1 fail).

Earlier records remain applicable: the 2,071/2,580-file run timed out with nine Windows symlink failures and a Cursor list-consistency failure; Cursor passed independently. Earlier cleanup failures, timeouts and the sandbox dependency-install EBADF are retained limitations; the external frozen-lockfile installation succeeded.

The AGENTS.md resource exception applies: focused behavior is verified; unfinished suite/platform coverage remains for maintainer CI. No full-suite pass is claimed. No paid inference or live-client UI validation was performed.

Review status

The six issues in the maintainer's October 26 review are addressed with regressions. Independent local review also caught two legacy Chat regressions; both were fixed and its counterexamples passed. The maintainer's post-2.93.0 release deferral remains acknowledged.

Codex repeatedly failed, including on 014356ba9e; CodeRabbit last reviewed de92d9ccfd and paused. Fresh review is requested for this fix; neither bot's approval is claimed. The existing review-service exception remains disclosed.

Checklist

  • Focused scope.
  • Documentation updated.
  • Reviewed for secrets, auth changes, and unsafe defaults; privacy scan passed.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Reasoning controls now distinguish turning thinking on or off from choosing its effort level. Model-specific capabilities and defaults appear in catalogs, exports, and /v1/models.
    • MiMo V2.6 models support a thinking toggle that is on by default, without adjustable reasoning intensity.
    • Requests can set reasoning enablement independently of effort across supported API formats.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reasoning settings now respect declared model capabilities when translating between client and provider controls.
    • Thinking choices are preserved when requests are normalized for a different destination.
    • The internal reasoning-enable field is omitted from Responses requests to destinations that do not support it.
  • Documentation
    • Provider guides now explain reasoning capabilities, defaults, and API behavior.

The translated guides do not describe MiMo V2.6 as having a low/medium/high reasoning ladder. Their ladder references explicitly apply to openai/gpt-oss-120b in the Crusoe section. No material contradiction with the English MiMo capability text remains.

345-345: 🩺 Stability & Availability

No state-leak fix is needed here.

prepareEffortNormalization restores the caller’s original reasoning and thinkingEnabled when the destination changes. Combo children use independent structuredClone request bodies. The final normalization call also runs after subagent fallback settles the route.

The summary difference is intentional. The code computes visibility from the original wire preference, and the accompanying test treats thinking enablement and summary visibility as separate settings. A derived thinkingEnabled value therefore does not prove a defect.

1096-1097: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The generic thinking-toggle branch can bypass native Claude model constraints when a custom provider declares those axes independently.

For claude-sonnet-5-5, an explicit disabled toggle can emit { type: "disabled" }, although Sonnet 5.5 requires { type: "between_tools" }. For adaptive Claude models, an explicit enabled toggle without an effort can emit { type: "enabled" }, although those models require the adaptive shape.

Apply the native model-specific policy before the generic toggle branch.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Pass the capability fields explicitly instead of spreading the whole CatalogModel.

...m copies every CatalogModel property into modelCapabilityFields. TypeScript does not apply excess-property checks to spreads. Any future CatalogModel field whose name matches a ModelCapabilityInput key would then flow into the wire shape unnoticed. longContextWindow is one such key.

Lines 1310-1312 already override three fields explicitly, so the spread now hides which fields the function reads. Name the inputs instead:

Proposed refactor

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Extract the duplicated effortDisabled projection rule into one shared helper.

Lines 388-398 repeat the logic in toExportModel (src/server/management/model-rows.ts, Lines 562-572):

  • They resolve the toggle, effort-support and default-thinking values from exportMetadata first, then from the row.
  • They compute effortDisabled.
  • They empty reasoningEfforts and drop defaultReasoningEffort when effortDisabled is true.

The /api/models path and the CLI path must agree on this rule. The tests only compare the two paths for the cases they cover. A later change to one copy, such as a new axis in the suppression condition, can make the exports diverge without a test failing.

Extract a pure function, for example resolveExportReasoningAxes(effective, row) in src/clients/config-export/reasoning-metadata.ts. It would return { supportsThinkingToggle, supportsReasoningEffort, defaultThinkingEnabled, reasoningEfforts, defaultReasoningEffort }. Call it from both sites.

Review comments at @src/adapters/anthropic.ts:
- Around line 1096-1097: Update the thinking serialization around
`thinkingEnabled` so `usesAdaptiveThinking` and `usesBetweenToolsFloor` take
precedence over the generic toggle wire. For these native models, skip generic
enabled/disabled serialization and allow the existing native branches to emit
the adaptive effort or `between_tools` shape even when `thinkingEnabled` is
defined.

Review comments at @src/adapters/openai-chat/passthrough.ts:
- Around line 117-121: Update the raw `thinking` forwarding condition so
`rawBody.thinking` is not copied to `body.thinking` when
`explicitThinkingEnabled` is set. Preserve the existing forwarding behavior when
no explicit reasoning boolean was provided.

Review comments at @src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-wire.ts:
- Around line 59-65: Update applyExplicitChatReasoningWirePolicy to use mapped
wireEffort rather than writing requestedEffort directly, falling back to the
normalized request only when wireEffort is a legacy toggle discriminator.
Preserve the tool-based omission rule and return reasoningLog for any emitted
reasoning_effort value.

Review comments at @src/claude/inbound.ts:
- Around line 634-637: Update the OpenAI-operated Responses dispatch path to
remove only reasoning.enabled before serialization, preserving reasoning.effort
and reasoning.summary. Apply this only when
isOpenAiOperatedResponsesDestination(provider) is true; retain reasoning.enabled
for routed adapters so their parser can map it to thinking options.

Review comments at @src/codex/catalog/model-hints.ts:
- Around line 309-326: Update applyProviderConfigHints to accept the original
model as the reasoning source when projecting a clone, and pass that source from
both the retained-model path in mergeConfiguredModelsIntoLiveCatalog and the
routed metadata clone path. Resolve reasoning capabilities from the original
model’s preserved provenance so cloned models do not let stale values override
discovery values.

Review comments at @src/server/models-capabilities.ts:
- Around line 176-177: Normalize reasoning capability fields before building
capabilities: in the logic that computes efforts and supports_reasoning, ensure
explicit supportsReasoning: false clears reasoning efforts, and infer reasoning
support when the field is absent from non-empty efforts, supportsThinkingToggle:
true, or supportsReasoningEffort: true. Preserve explicit supportsReasoning
values.

Review comments at @structure/clients/integrations.md:
- Line 245: Review each documentation page mapped to the changed server and
reasoning-capability areas in the structure manifest; update only pages whose
documented contracts changed, keeping their guidance consistent with the
capability projections described here.

Review comments at @structure/providers-and-adapters.md:
- Line 5: Update modelCapabilityFields to omit supports_reasoning when support
is unknown, emitting it only when reasoning is declared or an effort list
establishes support; ensure catalogHintsFromModelsApiItem preserves that absence
as unknown. Add a projection-to-parser test covering the unknown case.

Review comments at @tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-reasoning.test.ts:
- Around line 29-48: Add assertions to the dual-axis explicit `thinkingEnabled:
false` test that `output_config` is undefined and `max_tokens` remains 8192.
Keep its existing `thinking`, `temperature`, and `top_p` assertions unchanged;
the toggle-only test does not cover this configuration.

Review comments at
@tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-reasoning-wire-policy.test.ts:
- Line 78: Update finalToggleBodies to set reasoning.enabled on the raw request
before parsing, and remove manual parsed.options.thinkingEnabled assignments
from the mapped-input tests so they exercise the actual inbound mappings. In the
direct-boolean test, assert the expected reasoning behavior on both final wires,
including the native raw-boolean path.

Synced dev c4d4bb2 in 7b46072 and resolved the catalog-document conflict, retaining both independent reasoning capabilities and upstream ultra wire normalization. 962 focused tests pass; type, structure, size, privacy and PR-diff checks pass. All 12 published review threads are resolved. Restoring human-review readiness with the existing full-suite and Codex service exceptions retained; the merge head is not claimed as bot-reviewed.

Release decision (v2.93.0 dev-merge, maintainer triage lane): DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE. The PR stays open; this is not a rejection.

To give this a fair shot for 2.93.0, I merged current dev into the branch at head 101813ea6. The only manual resolution was the structure/catalog.md "Ultra reasoning level" prose, where I kept your text and added #7731's nearest-rung sentence. Focused tests are green: 687 pass / 0 fail locally, and 714 pass / 0 fail across the changed files plus the #7731 clamp, ratchet and layout guards in the independent review, with typecheck clean. The independent review then reproduced six behavior problems that the current tests don't cover. Several change the outbound wire for configs that are valid today, so this cannot land in a release cut:

  1. fix(codex): clamp native efforts to selected model ladder #7731 bypass for saved configs (src/server/responses/core-normalize.ts:343). With native gpt-6.1-sol, a saved noReasoningModels: ["gpt-6.1-sol"], and requested effort none, normalization deletes options.reasoning before nativeEffortClamp runs, but raw reasoning.effort survives. dev sends low; this head sends the unsupported none. Reconcile raw and parsed reasoning together, and cover direct, compaction-switch and failover paths.
  2. Internal toggle leaks to third-party Responses destinations (src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts:519). Claude thinking.type: "enabled" now adds reasoning.enabled: true, and only OpenAI-operated destinations strip it. Strip it at every Responses egress unless the destination declares support.
  3. Tool-specific effort suppression bypassed (src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-wire.ts:89). For a toggle-and-effort model, the early handled: false return skips omitReasoningEffortWithToolsModels, so both Chat builders send reasoning_effort alongside tools.
  4. Legacy toggle configs gain a new effort field (src/adapters/openai-chat.ts:176). thinkingToggleModels: ["m"] plus reasoningEfforts: ["low","high"] with no capability declarations used to send no reasoning field for high; it now sends reasoning_effort: "high". Keep legacy wire selection unless independent effort serialization is declared.
  5. Case-insensitive operator denial lost in the catalog (src/codex/catalog/model-hints.ts:320). Discovered m with operator key M setting supportsThinkingToggle: false resolves false at runtime but publishes true, so Codex gains a none choice.
  6. Claude discovery drops MiMo thinking (src/codex/catalog/model-hints.ts:328 → src/claude/model-info.ts:49). MiMo V2.6's now-empty strength ladder makes Claude discovery report thinking.supported: false even though supportsReasoning and supportsThinkingToggle are true. Project thinking support independently of effort rungs.

After the release, please fix these against current dev (the merge commit above is on your branch already), add a regression for each, and complete readiness again. It will get a fresh review.

…ections

Address six maintainer findings and preserve legacy Chat behavior across native and translated requests. Cover native effort recovery, Responses extension boundaries, tool omission, case-folded overrides, and Claude discovery.

Pushed 5b57a6030f: addressed the six findings against dev 8dd330a3f5, retaining your merge:

  1. Native Codex keeps snapshot-owned effort clamping; routed normalization clears effort from both parsed and raw requests. Regressions cover direct, compaction-switch and destination-failover paths.
  2. Responses egress strips internal reasoning.enabled unless a custom gateway explicitly declares the gateway-object wire. OpenAI destinations always strip it.
  3. Independent Chat controls still pass through tool omission and gateway serialization.
  4. Inferred legacy effort support no longer enables a second serialized control. Additional baseline comparisons preserve native forwarding and tool omission for existing GLM and MiMo 2.5 configurations.
  5. Catalog overrides use the shared case-insensitive lookup without letting inferred capability flags override explicit discovery data.
  6. Claude discovery separates reasoning support, enabled thinking and usable effort rungs, including fixed and toggle-only reasoners.

The PR Verification section records the focused results and expanded-test exceptions. The Anthropic Fast PATCH 400 also reproduces on unmodified dev; CodeBuddy and WS failures passed isolated reruns. The bounded changed-suite run remains incomplete, and earlier Windows/Cursor/timeout limitations remain disclosed.

The release deferral is understood. These changes are ready for a fresh review.

Validation: 1,309 tests across 32 focused files pass; type, structure, size, privacy and documentation checks pass. Full-suite limitations remain in the PR description.

…r merging dev

The merge with dev put structure/clients/integrations.md at 601 lines; join the
reasoning-projection sentence onto the preceding export-metadata line.

Status update (release-blocking for v2.93.0). The round-2 independent review of 5b57a6030 passed: all six round-1 findings are resolved, each with a regression that fails on the old head. I merged current dev into the branch (e44b4bad7, no rebase), and adbe0e873 joins one sentence in structure/clients/integrations.md because the merge put it at 601 of its 600 lines. Locally, the 22 changed test files pass on that head (711 / 0).

Exact-head CI then found one regression on an existing test, tests/providers/xai/grok-models-effort-list.test.ts:127. With a legacy config (modelReasoningEfforts: { "kimi-for-coding": [] }, no capability declarations), GET /v1/models now omits capabilities.supports_reasoning where dev reports false. Cursor's discovery relies on that flag (src/server/models-capabilities.ts:80), and the PR's own legacy-preservation rule says legacy configs keep their prior API behavior. A maintainer-lane fix is in progress on top of adbe0e873. It will be pushed here and reviewed again before merge.

Maintainer dev integration record (v2.93.0 release-prep lane L-D2, release-blocking), under the MAINTAINERS.md maintainer-integration exception for dev. This is maintainer integration, not an approving review.

  • Exact head: f19687de1a7cbd39d3b1b8b59b7e241707406319. No change requests; 0 unresolved review threads.
  • Round-1 blockers: the author's 5b57a6030 fixes all six from the 2026-10-26 review. A round-2 independent review confirmed each one, with a regression that fails on 101813ea6:
    1. fix(codex): clamp native efforts to selected model ladder #7731's native clamp is bypassed for saved noReasoningModels.
    2. reasoning.enabled leaks to third-party Responses destinations.
    3. Tool-specific effort suppression is bypassed.
    4. Legacy toggle wires gain a new effort field.
    5. Case-insensitive operator denial is lost.
    6. MiMo's Claude thinking support is lost.
  • Maintainer-lane commits (merges only, no rebase):
    • e44b4bad7 merges dev.
    • adbe0e873 joins one sentence in structure/clients/integrations.md because the merge put it at 601 of its 600 lines.
    • f19687de1 fixes a regression that exact-head CI on adbe0e873 caught in the existing tests/providers/xai/grok-models-effort-list.test.ts:127: a legacy explicit empty effort ladder again publishes capabilities.supports_reasoning: false on /v1/models (src/server/models-capabilities.ts:180), as dev does and as Cursor discovery expects, while explicit thinking declarations still advertise. The regression is tests/providers/cursor/cursor-local-models-schema.test.ts:118, and the original test passes unmodified.
  • Required CI on the exact head (fork workflows approved after diff review): Cross-platform CI 40362515355 (success); Catalog async contracts 40362515332 (success); Enforce PR target branch 40362506873 (success); PR hygiene 40362506690 (success). Not Windows-sensitive.
  • Independent review round 3 of this head: PASS, 0 blocking. Inline probes compared dev with this head and found legacy behavior unchanged on /v1/models, the Codex catalog, Claude model-info, OpenCode/Kilo exports and the outbound Chat builders; the six earlier fixes still hold. Tests: 703 pass / 0 fail, covering all 17 changed test files, the unmodified xAI test, and the native-effort, Lab, ratchet and layout guards.
  • Maintainer recheck on this head merged onto origin/dev a3e22148a (after fix(codex): renew credit evidence for namespace-bound Direct accounts #7621; no overlapping files): bun test --isolate on the xAI effort-list, Cursor schema, native ultra effort wire, chat reasoning wire policy, Responses summary-none, Claude model-info, resolved model policy, ratchet and layout files: 167 pass / 0 fail (pinned Bun 1.4.4). Typecheck exit 0, structure:check pass.
  • NOT RUN: external provider inference; native client apps; full local suite (shared test lock congested; CI covers the full suite).

Landing as a squash merge.
