Summary

GET /v1/models offers ultra on gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol and their --fast rows, but a request that selects it reached the ChatGPT backend as reasoning.effort: "ultra" and came back HTTP 400 (Supported values are: 'none', 'minimal', 'low', 'medium', 'high', 'xhigh', and 'max'). After this change the same request is sent as max and succeeds.

Two defects combined:

  • nativeEffortClamp (src/codex/catalog/effort.ts) returned null whenever the pinned upstream ladder listed the requested effort. Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol list ultra in that ladder, so the clamp never fired for them. It now treats ultra as max on every native model before clamping, so GPT-5.5 still lands on xhigh.
  • The parser folds ultra to max only in options.reasoning, while the passthrough serializes _rawBody. core-normalize now passes a raw ultra to the clamp and rewrites both copies. Native steering frames already clamp from the frame body, so they pick up the fix through the same function.

Decisions

  • The fold is silent, matching the existing clamp policy. codex-rs converts ultra to max before every provider request, mapReasoningEffort and the parser already apply that rule, and the Codex models guide documents that ultra "reaches the backend as max". This PR makes the native wire match that documented behavior. Explicit max is unchanged.
  • The catalog still advertises ultra. It is the client-facing level for maximum reasoning plus proactive delegation. Upstream's own roster lists it for these models, the Codex picker and spawn_agent validation depend on it, and /v1/models keeps it on purpose for Grok discovery (pinned by tests/providers/xai/grok-models-effort-list.test.ts). With the fold in place, every effort the catalog advertises is accepted end to end. Routed providers keep their own ladders: a routed model whose provider declares ultra is untouched, and unknown third-party ladders stay byte-for-byte.

Docs: one sentence each in docs-site/.../guides/codex-app-models.md and structure/catalog.md. No generated catalog, skill surface, or locale change was needed.

Refs #7590

Verification

  • bun test tests/responses/responses-native-ultra-effort-wire.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-ladders.test.ts: pass. The new server test runs a fake ChatGPT backend that returns 400 on ultra and drives /v1/responses (Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, plus an explicit max control) and /v1/chat/completions. With the two source files reverted, both server tests fail with Received: 400 and the clamp unit test returns null, so they reproduce the issue.
  • bun run test:changed (Bun 1.4.3): 27,878 pass, 36 skip (opt-in live-wire suites), 0 fail across 1,241 files.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • tests/test-layout.test.ts + tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: all pass except domain verification launches isolate tests through the pinned runner, which fails the same way on the unmodified base. Its probe cannot read the local Bun 1.4.3 shim, so that is local environment only.
  • NOT RUN: full bun run test (the import-graph run above covers every file that imports the changed modules) and a live request against the real ChatGPT backend. CI covers the rest.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Native model requests using ultra now send a supported reasoning level on both the Responses and Chat Completions APIs. Models with a max level receive max; models without it use their highest supported level. Explicit max requests remain unchanged.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the model guide to explain supported native reasoning levels and how ultra is handled, including differences between newer and older models.

The ChatGPT backend accepts reasoning efforts none..max and rejects ultra
with HTTP 400. nativeEffortClamp returned null whenever the pinned upstream
ladder listed the requested effort, and the gpt-6-astra and gpt-6.1-sol
ladders list ultra. The parser's ultra->max fold also only reached
options.reasoning, so the passthrough still serialized the caller's raw
ultra. Fold ultra to max in the clamp and feed the raw ultra to it from
core-normalize so the wire body is rewritten on /v1/responses,
/v1/chat/completions and steering frames.

📝 Walkthrough

Native Codex requests now map ultra to max when the model supports max. Request normalization applies the mapping to raw request bodies. Tests cover /v1/responses and /v1/chat/completions.

Changes: Native Codex effort handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Map native effort values
src/codex/catalog/effort.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-ladders.test.ts, structure/catalog.md
nativeEffortClamp maps ultra to max and checks support for the mapped value. For uncovered GPT-5.6 native slugs, max remains unclamped. Tests cover six model slugs, and the catalog documentation describes the mapping.
Normalize and verify request bodies
src/server/responses/core-normalize.ts, tests/responses/responses-native-ultra-effort-wire.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-app-models.md
Request normalization applies the clamp to raw ultra values and updates the raw and normalized effort when clamping succeeds. Integration tests verify that both endpoints send max. The test-layout mappings and guide document the behavior.

Clamp unpinned native Chat effort before passthrough.

normalizePinnedChatEffort rewrites reasoning_effort only when a pin or cap applies. An unpinned native request with reasoning_effort: "ultra" therefore reaches the Chat passthrough unchanged, and the ChatGPT backend rejects it instead of receiving "max".

Apply nativeEffortClamp in normalizePinnedChatEffort with the native-route guard. Update the fixture to inspect reasoning_effort; body.reasoning?.effort is the Responses field.

Re the outside-diff finding on src/server/chat-native.ts:307 (clamp unpinned native Chat effort): not applied, because native ChatGPT requests never reach that path.

  • src/server/chat-native-eligibility.ts:36 returns cross-wire-ir for any provider whose adapter is not openai-chat, so native Chat passthrough only serves routed openai-chat providers.
  • shouldApplyNativeEffortClamp (src/codex/catalog/effort.ts) is true only for the canonical openai-responses ChatGPT forward provider. The proposed guard would therefore always be false inside normalizePinnedChatEffort.
  • Native /v1/chat/completions is translated to a Responses body and goes through core-normalize, which this PR fixes. tests/responses/responses-native-ultra-effort-wire.test.ts covers that path: the fake backend received reasoning.effort: "max", and reverting the fix makes it fail with the issue's HTTP 400. A request shaped as reasoning_effort would leave that field undefined and fail the ["max"] assertion, so the fixture cannot pass vacuously.

Routed openai-chat providers keep their own ladder mapping through mapReasoningEffort, which already folds ultra to max.
