feat(providers): add AI Stupid Level API-key preset - #7623
This PR comes from the AI Stupid Level team, which operates the service it adds. It was prepared with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) for the AI Stupid Level team.
Add AI Stupid Level's Smart Router as an ordinary API-key provider. It appears in ocx init, in ocx provider add aistupidlevel, in the dashboard's Add provider picker and in API-key login. The preset reuses openai-chat at https://aistupidlevel.info/v1; it adds no sponsor status, ranking preference, OAuth flow, adapter or wire pin. It follows the shape of Modelflare (#7037) and TokenLab (#6221).
The service forwards each request with the user's own provider key: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Kimi or GLM, saved on their AI Stupid Level account. The provider bills the user directly, and AI Stupid Level adds no markup. A request names either a routing mode, which picks the model from AI Stupid Level's benchmark results, or a real model id, which pins that model. The X-AISM-Model response header names the model that answered.
Discovery. Live discovery reads the key-gated GET /v1/models, so the default discovery URL also validates the key. No key or an invalid key gets 401; a valid key gets 200.
Seeded models. The seed list is the 15 routing modes, with auto-coding as the default. Discovery adds the 24 real model ids a request can pin, such as aistupidlevel/claude-opus-5-5.
Declared limits. Each routing mode declares a conservative 262,144-token window and 64,000 output tokens, which hold for any model the router can pick. On 2026-10-23 the pool's smallest window was Kimi K2.7 Code's 262,144. Of the 24 pinnable ids listed on 2026-10-26, this repo's model metadata covers 23, all with at least a 1,000,000-token window and 65,536 output tokens; kimi-k3.1-pro is not in this repo's metadata.
Text only, for every id. The router rejects image, audio and file parts with 400 unsupported_content. The preset declares inputModalities: ["text"] for the whole provider, so a pinned id from live discovery (for example claude-sonnet-4-6) is text-only too; the routing modes keep their per-model ["text"]. An image therefore goes through the vision sidecar, or is stripped when no sidecar is available.
Every inbound stays on Chat, Claude Code included. The service also has POST /v1/messages, but its docs say "There is no routing on this path: the request goes to Anthropic, with your Anthropic key, for the Claude model it names". So this PR does not route Anthropic traffic there. A sandbox request to that endpoint returned 400 "No active Anthropic API key found", so it cannot be checked without spending.
Custom destinations are kept.preserveCustomDestination leaves an older same-named custom provider on its own URL.
Files:
src/providers/registry/entries-extended.ts: the aistupidlevel entry, after modelflare.
Provider-wide inputModalities, added after review. It is the modality counterpart of contextWindow and supportsVerbosity:
src/providers/registry/types.ts and src/types/provider.ts add the field.
The field is registry-only and runtime-only. It is never seeded into saved config or copied by enrichProviderFromRegistry, because init and management writes persist the enriched object.
registryInputModalitiesForDestination() in src/providers/derive.ts returns it only while a row points at the preset destination.
src/providers/routed-config.ts applies it to the routed provider, and vision eligibility applies it to its private copy. A row moved to another URL therefore drops it.
src/vision/eligibility.ts and src/vision/plan.ts fall back to it when no per-model entry lists the id, and so does src/routing/capability.ts, which reads it from the provider only. A per-model entry still wins.
The field is classified in model-ids.ts, model-rename-fields.ts and server/auth-cors.ts, and included in the catalog gather fingerprint (gather-capture.ts). src/oauth/login-cli.ts is no longer changed.
structure/data-planes/images.md documents it next to the Mistral registry note. Only this preset sets it.
src/providers/registry/model-seeds.ts: the routing-mode list and the per-mode window, output and modality maps, in the same style as the Opper seeds.
tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts (new), tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts and tests/vision/vision-text-only-predicate.test.ts.
scripts/test-layout/layout.json and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json. The layout entry is on the existing Opper/Modelflare line because layout.json is at 1,999 lines.
docs-site/.../guides/providers.md: a table row and a setup paragraph. The preset counts are recounted to 106 total and 85 key-based in all 8 guides, all 8 quickstarts and structure/ops/docs-and-release.md.
Evidence
These are the primary sources for a canonical preset, in the order MAINTAINERS.md lists them. All were verified on 2026-10-26.
Chat completions: POST /v1/chat/completions. "Create a chat completion. Use an auto-* virtual model for intelligent routing, or a real model ID for direct pin routing."
Model discovery for liveModels: true: GET /v1/models. "List available models. Returns virtual auto-* models plus all real models that have been benchmarked. Requires authentication."
No key: 401 with {"error":{"message":"Missing or invalid Authorization header","type":"authentication_error","code":"invalid_api_key"}}.
An invalid aism_ key: 401.
A valid router key (sent with X-ASL-Sandbox: true): 200, listing 39 ids (the 15 routing modes the preset seeds, unchanged since 2026-10-23, plus 24 pinnable models).
So the default discovery URL is also a meaningful key check.
Terms of service and the operating legal entity.aistupidlevel.info/terms (last updated 19 October 2026): "These terms are an agreement between you and S.C. STUDIO PLATFORMS S.R.L., Craiova, Dolj County, Romania (“we”), which operates AI Stupid Level at aistupidlevel.info (“ASL”)." On user content, §09 says: "You give us permission to process it only to provide the service to you. We do not use your requests to train models or to build our benchmarks." The privacy policy is public.
Resale or routing authorization for aggregators. ASL does not resell model access. Every request reaches the model vendor on the user's own account, with the user's own key, so there is no ASL-owned upstream account that would need resale rights.
Terms §04, "Smart Router and your provider keys": "The Smart Router calls AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Zhipu) with the provider keys you add. The provider bills you directly for that usage, under your agreement with it. We do not resell model access and do not mark up provider prices."
The same section: "You are responsible for complying with each provider’s terms and usage policies for the requests you send, and for having the rights to the content you send."
provider_key_rejected / no_provider_keys: "Your provider key is missing or was refused — add or update it in Providers".
provider_quota_exceeded: "Your provider account refused for credit or quota".
Named maintenance owner. The AI Stupid Level team, through GitHub @StudioPlatforms, updates the preset when the base URL, authentication or catalog contract changes. Report an integration break in this repository and mention @StudioPlatforms. Report service issues to hello@aistupidlevel.info, the contact address in the terms.
Citable verification date. 2026-10-26, against the sources above. The registry comment on the aistupidlevel entry records the same date and sources, and the routing-mode seed comment records the GET /v1/models check.
Verification
These commands ran on Linux with Bun 1.4.4 (testRunnerBun). The branch is rebased onto dev at 81ce5959 (0 commits behind), and the head is 8c379fd0.
On that exact head:
bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan and bun run structure:check pass.
tests/vision/ tests/routing/ tests/oauth/ plus focused files: 3,232 pass, 2 skip, 0 fail. The focused files are the new test, codex-gather-authority, catalog-vision-sidecar-disabled, modelflare-provider, tokenlab-provider, opper-provider, provider-registry-parity, docs-provider-preset-counts, both test-layout tests, file-size-ratchet, structure-ssot and import-cycle-ratchet.
tests/providers/ tests/cli/ tests/server/ tests/codex-integration/: 25,838 pass, 68 skip, 14 fail. All 14 fail the same way on unmodified dev in this environment:
codex-shim-path-readiness ×5 and codex-shim-overlay-readiness ×2;
cli-resolve-subprocess ×3;
cli-codex-cli-update-boundary, proxy-liveness, subagent-model-force-api and codebuddy-adapter.
I re-ran the last four and cli-resolve-subprocess on dev816e84b1/81ce5959 today; the shim tests were compared on ceef4889.
cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build (Node 24 on PATH): 593 pages built, 84,956 internal links checked.
The full bun run test did not fit its 900-second lane budget on this shared 6-core machine, which is why it ran in domains.
Regression tests for the triage finding, in tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts:
AI Stupid Level text-only contract for pinned models > a pinned live id needs vision preprocessing, also for a row saved before the declaration.
… > an image sent to a pinned model never reaches the router. It posts an input_image to aistupidlevel/claude-sonnet-4-6 through the proxy. The request that reaches the stubbed router carries [image omitted: …] and no image part.
… > a same-named custom destination does not inherit the text-only declaration. This covers a hand-written custom row and a seeded row moved to another URL.
… > registry enrichment never writes the declaration into a saved provider object.
The predicate test is in tests/vision/vision-text-only-predicate.test.ts: provider-wide inputModalities cover unlisted ids while a per-model entry still wins.
These tests fail without the fix:
With inputModalities: ["text"] removed from the preset, the first two fail.
With the predicate fallback removed, the predicate test fails.
With a name-only registry fallback in capability.ts, the custom-destination test fails.
With enrichment copying the field again, or without the runtime fill in vision eligibility, the enrichment test fails.
I ran a live smoke test on 2026-10-26 against head 8c379fd0, without spending anything. ASL's sandbox mode routes for real but returns a mock answer: no provider is called and nothing is billed. Setup:
A fresh throwaway HOME, CODEX_HOME and OPENCODEX_HOME.
ocx provider add aistupidlevel --api-key '${AISTUPIDLEVEL_API_KEY}' --set-default. The saved row has no inputModalities, before and after ocx start, and the key stayed an env reference.
"headers": {"X-ASL-Sandbox": "true"} added to the saved provider.
ocx start --port 18776, run with a PID file and stopped by PID.
Results:
An image sent through Responses to aistupidlevel/claude-sonnet-4-6, aistupidlevel/gpt-6-sol and aistupidlevel/gemini-4-argon was replaced with [image omitted: this model is text-only and the vision sidecar is unavailable …] before the request reached the router, and each request completed.
The same held for a Chat image_url part and an Anthropic image block sent to aistupidlevel/claude-sonnet-4-6.
Sent straight to the router, an image part gets 400 unsupported_content.
The key value appeared in 0 config or log files.
Not run: a turn on a real model with funded provider keys, and a full Codex or Claude Code UI session. The full suite and the cross-platform jobs need a maintainer to start CI for this fork PR.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. This is one new key destination, https://aistupidlevel.info/v1, with no new auth flow. The tests use fake keys and stubbed fetch.
CodeRabbit's two findings from 2026-10-26 are fixed: the seeded-row case in 51622cd6, and enrichment persistence in 8c379fd0. Both threads are resolved.
Review readiness checklist
This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:
Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

The change adds an AI Stupid Level provider preset with routing modes and authenticated live model discovery. It adds provider-wide input modality handling for resolved providers and vision processing. Documentation updates the preset counts and describes the new provider.
Changes: Provider registration and modality handling
Adds provider-wide inputModalities to provider and registry types. Registry modalities are copied into resolved provider configuration when absent, and the field is included in editor data and catalog fingerprints. Capability and vision checks use provider-wide modalities when no per-model entry exists; per-model declarations take precedence. Tests cover modality fallback, pinned models, custom destinations, and image omission for text-only routing.
AI Stupid Level registration and model discovery src/providers/registry/entries-extended.ts, src/providers/registry/model-seeds.ts, tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts, tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Adds the aistupidlevel key-authenticated preset with the OpenAI Chat adapter, live model discovery, and auto-coding default. Seeds 15 routing modes with context and output limits and text-only modalities. Tests cover registration, catalog requests, key validation, and provider behavior.
Provider documentation and preset counts docs-site/src/content/docs/getting-started/quickstart.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/getting-started/quickstart.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/guides/providers.md, structure/ops/docs-and-release.md
Updates the documented built-in preset total from 105 to 106 and the key-based total from 84 to 85. The English provider guide describes AI Stupid Level setup, routing modes, model pinning, live discovery, and text-only image handling.

The title "feat(providers): add AI Stupid Level API-key preset" matches the main change. The changeset adds the AI Stupid Level API-key provider entry (registry entries, routing-mode seeds, and tests), and the PR objectives describe the same preset addition. The title does not cover the provider-wide inputModalities handling or the docs count updates, but the PR objectives state that the preset is the primary goal, so the title is specific and accurate.

Needs fixes before this can land: apply the stated text-only contract to live pinned IDs too, and add a pinned-model image regression. #7623 masks only routing modes; an unlisted ID is not classified as text-only by src/vision/eligibility.ts:140, allowing direct image forwarding under the PR’s stated upstream contract. Also obtain executable CI and admission clearance.
Still needed on dev: yes. The registry proceeds directly from Modelflare to Xiaomi (src/providers/registry/entries-extended.ts:1285); the proposed seed block is absent (src/providers/registry/model-seeds.ts:1168).
Exact-head CI at triage time: 68982c3 — policy checks and CodeRabbit pass; executable ci.yml is ACTION_REQUIRED, run 39947077300. No failing/pending test check names surfaced. lane=all on exact head: n.a.
Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.

What changed: a provider-wide inputModalities declaration, the modality counterpart of contextWindow and supportsVerbosity, in the registry and provider config. The registry seeds it. Enrichment and routedProviderConfig backfill it, for the preset destination only.
Where it applies:isModelVisionSidecarConsumer in src/vision/eligibility.ts, requiresVisionPreprocessing, and the routing capability evidence fall back to it when no per-model entry lists the id. A per-model entry still wins. The preset declares ["text"].
Regression tests, in tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts:
an image sent to a pinned model never reaches the router posts an input_image to aistupidlevel/claude-sonnet-4-6. The stubbed router receives [image omitted: …].
a pinned live id needs vision preprocessing, also for a row saved before the declaration.
Both fail without the declaration.
Refreshed onto dev: the branch is rebased onto the current dev (bd5c2ea9), and the new head is a19cbf8c.
CI and admission: approving the executable CI run and the admission decision are with the maintainers.
The hygiene check flags two one-line changes on auth surfaces. Both come from the provider-wide inputModalities field the triage asked for:
src/server/auth-cors.ts classifies the field as editor in PROVIDER_CONFIG_FIELD_POLICY, the same as modelInputModalities. The table's satisfies Record<keyof OcxProviderConfig, …> check requires an entry for every config field.
src/oauth/login-cli.ts copies the field into the provider config that a key login creates, next to the existing modelInputModalities copy.
No authentication logic changes. @lidge-jun, once you've reviewed them, could you apply maintainer-sponsored?
Release decision (v2.93.0 dev-merge, maintainer triage lane): DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE. The PR stays open; this is not a rejection.
Adding a canonical provider preset is a credential-destination change. MAINTAINERS.md requires the primary-source evidence (documented OpenAI-compatible endpoints including authenticated GET /v1/models for liveModels, terms of service and operating entity, a named maintenance owner, a citable verification date) and, because the branch touches src/oauth/login-cli.ts and src/server/auth-cors.ts, maintainer sponsorship and a security review (unsponsored_surface). Thank you for the explanation of the two one-line auth-surface changes; it makes sense, and the sponsorship review is where it will be checked. That review cannot be done properly inside the 2.93.0 cut, and the branch is also a draft (readiness 0/4) 61 commits behind dev.
Not required for 2.93.0. After the release, please refresh onto dev, complete readiness, and put the evidence list in the description. If the evidence is incomplete, an inert src/providers/free-directory.ts reference row is the documented alternative.
Maintainer sponsorship (v2.93.0 release-prep lane L-D2): the repository owner has classified this PR as release-blocking and granted admin sponsorship for its restricted surface (src/oauth/login-cli.ts, src/server/auth-cors.ts; plus the new canonical provider destination, whose primary-source evidence the sponsoring maintainer verifies). I'm applying maintainer-sponsored as the sponsoring maintainer. Sponsorship does not replace the security review MAINTAINERS.md requires: an independent security review of the refreshed head runs before merge, and the merge record will note its result.

Adds AI Stupid Level's Smart Router as an ordinary API-key preset:
openai-chat at https://aistupidlevel.info/v1, live discovery from the
key-gated GET /v1/models (which also validates the key), and the 15
routing modes seeded with auto-coding as the default. Each routing mode
declares a 262,144-token window, 64,000 output tokens and text-only
input, limits that hold for any model the router picks. Every inbound
stays on Chat: the router's /v1/messages is a passthrough to Anthropic
without routing.
Preset counts are recounted to 106 total and 85 key-based in all 8
guides, all 8 quickstarts and structure/ops/docs-and-release.md.

…s included
The preset declared text-only input for its 15 routing modes only. A
pinned id from live discovery, such as claude-sonnet-4-6, had no
modality evidence, so an attached image was forwarded to the router,
which answers 400 unsupported_content.
Add a provider-wide inputModalities declaration, the modality
counterpart of contextWindow and supportsVerbosity. The registry seeds
it, and enrichProviderFromRegistry and routedProviderConfig backfill it
for rows saved earlier. isModelVisionSidecarConsumer,
requiresVisionPreprocessing, modelAcceptsImageInput and the routing
capability evidence fall back to it when no per-model entry lists the
id; a per-model entry still wins. The AI Stupid Level preset declares
["text"].
Regression tests: a pinned live id needs vision preprocessing, also for
a row saved before the declaration, and an image sent to
aistupidlevel/claude-sonnet-4-6 through the proxy never reaches the
router.

Review follow-up on the provider-wide inputModalities declaration:
- Declare inputModalities on DerivedKeyLoginProvider, and copy it in
providerConfigFromKeyLoginProvider, so a dashboard key login saves it
like a CLI provider add does.
- Drop the name-only registry fallback from the routing capability
evidence. It applied the preset's ["text"] to a same-named custom
destination; the routed provider already carries the declaration,
backfilled for the preset destination only.
Regression test: a same-named custom destination keeps its own modality
evidence and needs no vision preprocessing.

…id Level preset
The contract (router docs, terms, key-gated GET /v1/models) was checked
again on 2026-10-26: the 15 routing modes are unchanged. The pool of
pinnable models has changed since 2026-10-23 (Kimi K2.7 Code is no longer
listed), so the limits comment now calls 262,144 a conservative window
rather than the current pool minimum.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: a row seeded from the AI Stupid Level preset kept
inputModalities: ["text"] after its baseUrl was pointed elsewhere, so a
custom image-capable endpoint would have had its images stripped.
The declaration is now registry-only, like other destination-bound
registry defaults: it is no longer seeded into saved config (CLI add or
key login), and enrichProviderFromRegistry and routedProviderConfig fill
it only while the provider points at the preset destination. This also
drops the src/oauth/login-cli.ts change.
The custom-destination test now covers a seeded row moved to another
URL as well as a hand-written custom row.

src/oauth/login-cli.ts is no longer touched.
Readiness: three of the four boxes are ticked. The findings box waits for those two CodeRabbit threads to close. CodeRabbit does not review drafts, so closing them needs a CodeRabbit re-review or a maintainer.
The head is otherwise ready for the security review.
Reject malformed provider-wide modalities at schema and management boundaries, repair tolerant loads to text, and preserve exact model declaration precedence. Cover destination-bound runtime backfill without persisting registry defaults; derive the active key-login test roster from the registry.

Maintainer integration decision (dev only): squash-merged as 9e48f78 at exact head b5776b8 on the repository owner's instruction.
Evidence at that head: Cross-platform CI run 40398871152 (gates, structure gate, test 1/4-4/4, docker smoke, api usage, storage policy, npm-global, docs build, ci) passed; hygiene 40398865977, enforce-target 40398866025 and Catalog async contracts 40398871061 passed. Restricted-surface sponsorship was granted by the maintainer for this release. Windows/macOS jobs are skipped on PR CI by policy; the v2.93.0 release-candidate run covers them.

Summary
This PR comes from the AI Stupid Level team, which operates the service it adds. It was prepared with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) for the AI Stupid Level team.
Add AI Stupid Level's Smart Router as an ordinary API-key provider. It appears in
ocx init, inocx provider add aistupidlevel, in the dashboard's Add provider picker and in API-key login. The preset reusesopenai-chatathttps://aistupidlevel.info/v1; it adds no sponsor status, ranking preference, OAuth flow, adapter or wire pin. It follows the shape of Modelflare (#7037) and TokenLab (#6221).The service forwards each request with the user's own provider key: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Kimi or GLM, saved on their AI Stupid Level account. The provider bills the user directly, and AI Stupid Level adds no markup. A request names either a routing mode, which picks the model from AI Stupid Level's benchmark results, or a real model id, which pins that model. The
X-AISM-Modelresponse header names the model that answered.GET /v1/models, so the default discovery URL also validates the key. No key or an invalid key gets 401; a valid key gets 200.auto-codingas the default. Discovery adds the 24 real model ids a request can pin, such asaistupidlevel/claude-opus-5-5.kimi-k3.1-prois not in this repo's metadata.400 unsupported_content. The preset declaresinputModalities: ["text"]for the whole provider, so a pinned id from live discovery (for exampleclaude-sonnet-4-6) is text-only too; the routing modes keep their per-model["text"]. An image therefore goes through the vision sidecar, or is stripped when no sidecar is available.POST /v1/messages, but its docs say "There is no routing on this path: the request goes to Anthropic, with your Anthropic key, for the Claude model it names". So this PR does not route Anthropic traffic there. A sandbox request to that endpoint returned400 "No active Anthropic API key found", so it cannot be checked without spending.preserveCustomDestinationleaves an older same-named custom provider on its own URL.Files:
