Summary

The AI Stupid Level image fixtures bind a real server but used Bun's default five-second test budget. On Windows, startup consumed almost that entire budget, and synchronous teardown could block unfinished ACL work while deleting the temporary homes.

Attempt the existing background-work and ACL-reap cleanup for each fixture tree even if the other removal fails, then restore their environment in finally. Preserve a single failure's original error object and report both causes in an AggregateError when both removals fail. Give the two HTTP image cases the existing SERVER_BUDGET_MS; registry-only test bodies keep their default budget. Give the asynchronous cleanup hook its own 90-second ceiling for both trees. The original image assertions and awaited server shutdown are preserved. This changes one test file and no production policy or timeout.

Verification

Current cleanup-hook follow-up

Current head: 758a760fe97e72322e923d12832f02af7d2f5c89; verified tree: b11b50e76b5321659f10ca0e0d8a0c8641b3f72a.

Inline review 4384222380 correctly identified that the asynchronous afterEach still inherited the default hook timeout. This follow-up changes only its timeout to 3 * SERVER_BUDGET_MS (90 seconds), plus one rationale comment. Two successive background-drain and removal-retry sequences can consume about 60 seconds before filesystem and reap overhead. The shared budgets, test assertions, cleanup error propagation and environment-restoration finally remain unchanged.

  • Linux/Bun 1.4.4, repository preload, no CLI timeout override: bun test tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts passed 16 tests / 128 assertions, and bun test tests/lib/remove-tree-helper.test.ts passed 11 tests / 25 assertions. Total: 27 passed / 0 failed / 153 assertions.
  • bun run typecheck and git diff --check passed. Both test processes and typecheck exited zero, reached output EOF and were reaped with no owned process remaining; source fingerprints stayed unchanged.
  • Independent static review found no additional blocker. The remote tree and blob match the local candidate, and fix(codex): validate macOS app trust at execution boundaries #7758 received this parent file through a normal merge while preserving all 15 child follow-up file hashes.
  • Limitation: the ACL barrier waits for actual process reaping and has no finite internal deadline. The 90-second hook limit reports a failure if it stalls; it does not prove that every stalled child is reaped or that environment restoration finishes before cancellation. No new native Windows contention test or full local suite is claimed.
  • Current-head automatic CI completed successfully on this exact head. The selected fast changed-test lane and gates passed; full Ubuntu shards and native-platform jobs were policy-skipped. Latest target and hygiene checks passed. Earlier-head results below remain historical evidence.

Earlier cleanup-failure follow-up (13e2c00d)

Earlier verified head: 13e2c00da93baecacc93c412330c98dc5df664a1; verified tree: 17ba494294d55ba5876bced8580ab6be821fb605. Only tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts changes in this follow-up.

  • Linux/Bun 1.4.4: bun test ./tests/providers/provider-input-modalities.test.ts ./tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts ./tests/lib/remove-tree-helper.test.ts passed 69 tests / 379 assertions. First-tree, second-tree and both-tree cleanup failures cover attempted removals, retained trees, both environment values and original error identities.
  • Restoring only the old sequential cleanup produced 1 pass / 2 failures in the new regression group. The final candidate was restored and its source hash verified. No timeout or assertion was relaxed.
  • Official typecheck, structure, privacy and whitespace checks passed; the size-ratchet suite passed 9 tests / 85 assertions. The official typecheck covers src, not the entire test tree.
  • The published GitHub tree matches the tested tree. CI for 13e2c00d completed successfully on that earlier head. Policy-skipped native jobs are not native-platform acceptance evidence. The inline cleanup finding is addressed and the current review thread is resolved.
  • This follow-up did not repeat native Windows execution or the full local repository suite. The focused resource exception and historical Windows evidence below remain distinct.

Original fixture correction

  • Pure dev at 9e48f782 reproduced 53 pass / 2 fail on Windows/Bun 1.4.4 with bun test ./tests/providers/provider-input-modalities.test.ts ./tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts. Failures included teardown EBUSY and a subsequent ledger-home ownership conflict.
  • A bounded phase observation showed the image cases completing request, shutdown and cleanup around 7.4 seconds, beyond the default test budget. The temporary trace was removed.
  • The final candidate passed the same command and file order: 55 pass / 0 fail, 333 assertions. The image cases completed in 6.23 / 6.12 seconds; they did not stretch to the new 30-second boundary. No EBUSY, ownership-conflict, dangling-process or background-outlived warning was observed.
  • The official bun run typecheck, structure, nine size-ratchet checks, scoped privacy and whitespace checks passed. Typecheck covers src; no test-wide static typecheck is claimed. Bun compiled and executed the changed test.
  • Source/index hashes, native exit/EOF, environment restoration and owned-process cleanup were checked. No installed runtime or global configuration was changed.
  • Historical Cross-platform CI run 40418511601 passed at 8d2e0363d7db50de18af606e219e13b62b9e7bf6. Path-gated skipped jobs are not native-platform validation. This is the parent of fix(codex): validate macOS app trust at execution boundaries #7758 in GitHub stack #7780.

A full local repository run was disproportionate to this one-file fixture correction under the shared-worktree storage constraints. The focused command covers the changed cleanup and both actual HTTP cases; broader coverage remains with CI. The exact internal startup cost and the causal chain behind the secondary ownership conflict are not claimed as proven.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes are not needed for this test-only change.
  • Security-sensitive product behavior is unchanged; the scoped privacy check passed.
  • Current-head required CI passed.
  • Maintainer review is complete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved test cleanup by waiting for background tasks to finish before removing test data, including when cleanup encounters failures.
    • Cleanup now attempts to remove both test data trees, reports one or multiple failures, and restores the test environment even when removal fails.
    • Added coverage for cleanup failures, confirming removal attempts, error reporting, environment restoration, and retention of data when removal is unsuccessful.
    • Standardized the timeout used by the real-server test.

Walkthrough

The AI Stupid Level provider test now removes fixture trees after background work, restores environment and fixture state during teardown, and uses SERVER_BUDGET_MS for test timeouts.

Changes: Provider test teardown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Async fixture cleanup
tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts
The test uses drain-aware removal for both fixture trees and restores environment variables in finally. Cleanup preserves a single removal error or aggregates multiple errors. Tests check removal failures, environment restoration, and tree state. The real-server test uses SERVER_BUDGET_MS as its timeout.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "test(providers): fix ASL server fixture cleanup and budgets" matches the main change. The PR changes tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts to make fixture cleanup attempt both removals even when one fails, restore environment variables in finally, aggregate errors, and apply SERVER_BUDGET_MS to the two HTTP image cases. "ASL" is a short form of AI Stupid Level, which is the subject of the test file, so it is a reasonable abbreviation. The title does not cover the new async cleanup timeout or the new failure-combination test, but it does not need to list every detail.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files.

Always attempt both temporary tree removals, restore the fixture environment,
and preserve the original single error or both causes when cleanup fails.
Cover first, second and combined cleanup failures without changing product
behavior or the existing HTTP test budget.

Maintainer dev integration (L5 lane), per MAINTAINERS.md.

Decision: squash-merge at exact head 061174762b8eb2630ddbf1a0d381011e131dc652. That head is 758a760f plus a normal origin/dev merge; the earlier base predated the 2.94.0 version line.

  • Independent review (round 1, 758a760f): PASS, 0 blocking. Cleanup ordering, AggregateError semantics, environment restore and server shutdown were all verified; layout and size are compliant. The origin/dev merge did not touch this PR's file.
  • Budget rule (tests/helpers/test-budget.ts): the two SERVER_BUDGET_MS cases bind a real server (an intrinsic wait), and their ablation still fails. With requiresVisionPreprocessing forced to false at 06117476, both cases fail (0 pass / 2 fail: image_url is forwarded); unchanged, they pass (2 / 0).
  • PR CI at the exact head: Cross-platform CI 40510753367 success; target, hygiene and labeler checks success.
  • lane=all 40521459806 at the exact head: all 27 jobs succeeded (macOS, Ubuntu shards, all nine Windows shards, desktop, docker, storage and API checks). The aggregate ci roll-up job was still waiting for a runner during a repository-wide Actions backlog (142 queued runs) when this was merged.
  • Current with dev e25be531: the newer dev commits do not touch tests/providers/aistupidlevel-provider.test.ts, the shared test helpers it uses, or package.json.
  • fix(codex): validate macOS app trust at execution boundaries #7758 is stacked on this branch and is owned by another lane, which has been notified.

Related: #7515 was closed separately; its fix landed in #7528.
