fix(link): restore local routing when a Link Child stops - #7736
Explicitly stopping a Remote Link Child now restores local Native Codex routing, its catalog and resume history, and the managed Grok config, while keeping the saved Home connection. Before this change a stopped Child left Codex pointed at a closed, unauthenticated loopback port. Hub-client connections keep their existing ownership policy: their routing, catalog, history and Grok config are never restored over. After restoration, starting the Child alone does not reapply Codex routing; the guide explains the ocx sync --restart-codex follow-up.
The stop can race with a hub ocx connect. Ownership is therefore decided at each write, not once at the start:
Every restoration write (Codex config/profile/journal, catalog, approved-provider URLs, Grok strip, resume history, backup-manifest deletion and deferred-teardown receipt clearing) runs inside the config mutation lock (C). Inside that lock it re-checks that no hub connection, pending connect or pending disconnect owns the shared state. Hub connect publishes under the same lock, so no connection can commit between the check and the write.
Resume-history restoration (async worker and synchronous exit path) takes the history lock and then C for each complete synchronous attempt. C is never held across an await; no path takes the client lifecycle lock (L) or the Codex write lock (N) inside C.
If a hub owns the state, restoration stops and the stop's receipts are settled. If ownership cannot be proven (busy lock, pending connect), the obligation and receipt are kept and the stop reports a refusal.
The same guard covers the parent ocx stop, the authenticated POST /api/stop teardown, and signal/exit cleanup. A refused API stop releases only its own temporary stop intent; a queued automatic restart keeps its original deadline.
The CLI stop request uses the existing direct-loopback, status-preserving transport. A received HTTP 409 refusal stays a refusal even if its body is truncated or stalls, so the CLI never falls through to a forced kill. The authenticated stop POST never consults HTTP(S)_PROXY/ALL_PROXY.
Head 1b9246c3bd0741a00b97546f30b8f1c101e1705f, Windows, pinned Bun 1.4.4, focused runs with OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1:
New regressions fail without the fix and pass with it:
tests/service/stop-deferred-teardown.test.ts --test-name-pattern R6: 25 pass; with the six stop runtime files reverted to the pre-fix merge, all fail.
tests/service/stop-restore-history-ownership.test.ts + tests/cli/cli-stop-refusal-transport.test.ts: 11 pass; with the eight changed runtime files reverted, 2 pass / 9 fail (the two passing cases are standalone controls). History cases use real state DB, rollout and manifest writes; transport cases use a real loopback server returning truncated and stalled 409 bodies.
Stop/CLI/lifecycle: stop-deferred-teardown, process-control-graceful, cli-dispatch, shutdown-drain, grok-lifecycle, system-restart-admission and both new files: 323 pass, 0 fail.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: pass. File-size ratchet and test-layout guards: 38 pass. No cap raised, no assertion or timeout weakened.
Independent security/correctness review: round 1 on the earlier head found two blocking issues (history writes outside the guard; CLI transport dropping an observed 409); both were fixed in e16c69a. Round 2 on this exact head: PASS, 0 blocking.
Not run locally: full suite, test:changed, live Home/Child end-to-end. Hosted PR CI and a cross-platform lane=all run cover this head.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
When shared restoration succeeds, stopping a Remote Link Child restores native Codex routing, the catalog, and backed-up resume-history metadata, and removes managed Grok settings. Its saved Home connection remains.
Stop operations verify connection ownership before changing shared settings. If ownership is uncertain or changing, the stop is refused and the service stays running; the dashboard returns HTTP 409. Retry after the connection operation finishes.
Stopping a connected hub client preserves its shared configuration.
Documentation
Updated stop guidance: restarting alone does not reapply Child routing. Run ocx sync --restart-codex when enabled for the saved connection; this does not recreate managed Grok settings.

Walkthrough
Stop handling now distinguishes Remote Link Child connections from hub-owned connections. Restoration writes recheck ownership at each boundary. API stops return HTTP 409 when ownership is unproven, while CLI stops settle receipts and preserve refused outcomes. Tests and documentation cover these paths.

The compatibility follow-up is in e0e8b8a9562c889705ee7e67f5eb2929057dbe7c, preserving the maintainer changes through 1a9c286d. Its focused Windows Bun 1.4.4 run passed 191 tests / 1,105 assertions, plus the source gates.
The maintainer subsequently reported an additional R5 ownership race in the release decision. The existing passing tests do not cover that remaining restoration boundary. I have recorded the finding and the instruction to continue after v2.93.0 with a fresh dev merge and another review round. The PR remains draft; no further implementation or CI dispatch has been started.
Maintainer decision for v2.93.0 release prep: DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE.
Semantics: accepted. Restoring native Codex routing, its catalog and the managed Grok config on an explicit Remote Link Child stop is the intended direction. On dev today, a stopped Child leaves Codex pointed at a closed, unauthenticated loopback port. The documented trade-off is also accepted: ocx sync --restart-codex reapplies routing, but the Grok block is not recreated. Hub-client preservation from #7564 is unchanged.
Why this is not landing for v2.93.0: five independent security/correctness rounds (gpt-6.1-sol, high reasoning) each found a new HIGH-severity concurrency issue in the stop path. The last round still has one open:

R5
e0e8b8a9
Open (HIGH): with acceptNotOwnedTeardown, a Link stop that has created a receipt and becomes hub-connected during orphan discovery refuses the hub's truthful not-owned. After the process exits, the parent uses its entry-time restoration decision, restores native Codex, strips Grok and clears the receipt, overwriting the new hub connection. The same happens without a receipt when the hub commits after the POST snapshot. With the unmodified fixture, dev/1a9c286d make 0/0/0 native/Grok/receipt calls and e0e8b8a9 makes 1/1/1.
Open
Suggested repair for R5 from the review: revalidate connection ownership at the final parent restoration boundary, under the same exclusion that ocx connect/ocx disconnect use. Explicitly settle receipts superseded by hub ownership while keeping restoration for older Link runtimes. Cover transitions before the POST and during the request, with receipt creation both succeeding and failing.
The maintainer commits on this branch (40feba33, 827d2d8f, fe075b89, 1a9c286d, plus their regression tests in tests/service/stop-deferred-teardown.test.ts and tests/fixtures/parent-stop-runner.ts) should be kept when this resumes. Evidence on the reviewed heads: 206–270 focused tests passed with 0 failures on Bun 1.4.4, and typecheck, structure, privacy and skill-surface checks passed. No exact-head cross-platform lane=all run completed before this decision. Superseded dispatches were cancelled.
Please continue after the release on a fresh merge of dev (merge, not rebase), and request a new review round once R5 is addressed.
… restore boundary
Resolve structure/runtime.md against lidge-jun#7754 (direct local stop transport). Fix the round-5 HIGH: a late not-owned refusal let the parent restore over a hub connection committed while the stop was in flight. restoreBoundaryOwnership re-reads persisted connection state under the client lifecycle lock (released before restoration takes N, per N -> L -> C); a hub owner skips restoration and settles this run and recovered receipts, a busy or failing lock keeps the obligation and fails the stop. Regressions cover hub commits during orphan discovery and during the POST, with and without a receipt, plus the busy-lock case.
Release-prep update for the coordinator-approved final fix round: still DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE (the round did not converge).
In this round, maintainer commit fcb8c97e merged origin/devb8ba848c without a rebase. It added restoreBoundaryOwnership, which re-reads connection ownership under the client lifecycle lock (L) at the parent restore boundary. When a hub owns the state, the stop skips restoration and settles the receipts. When the lock is busy, it keeps the obligation. The new regressions cover hub commits during orphan discovery and while the POST is in flight, each with and without a receipt, plus the busy-lock case. Four of the five fail without the change; the fifth is a control that passes either way. All five pass with it. On Bun 1.4.4 the focused stop suites pass 519 tests with 0 failures, and exact-head PR CI is green (32/32 checks, including Cross-platform CI run 40331105955).
Blocking finding from independent review round 6 (gpt-6.1-sol, high): the inspection does not protect the writes. src/cli/stop-restore.ts:167 releases L after reading ownership, and src/cli/index.ts:1433 then restores without rechecking ownership at those writes. A hub connection committed between the two still gets its routing restored away, its Grok config stripped and the receipt cleared, while the stop reports success. A scratch case using the repository fixture reproduces this with and without a receipt; restoration is mocked there, so the reproduction proves the parent's decisions, not damage to real external files. The R5 transitions before and during the POST are fixed, old-runtime Link restoration still works, and settling recovered nonces looks safe on inspection.
Suggested repair: move the ownership and pending-connect validation inside the protected mutation boundaries. Either acquire N, then L, then C around restoration, or validate inside the synchronous N/C commits, which exclude connection publication through C, and protect the catalog and Grok checks after any await. Do not take L inside an existing N/C callback. Add regressions for a transition after the inspection and for waiting on a concurrent writer. The lane=all run on this head was cancelled together with this decision.
Please continue from fcb8c97e after the release (merge dev, no rebase), then request a fresh review.
Reopened to preserve the unresolved post-release work and review history. This remains Draft / DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE; reopening does not indicate that the remaining R6 ownership race is fixed or that this is ready to merge.
#7805 explicitly lists the Child-stop routing issue as a known issue and says the native-restore fix #7736 is deferred. Its main merge occurred at 05:46:19 UTC, followed by this PR closing without merge at 05:46:21 UTC. The fix #7736 phrase appears to have triggered GitHub's closing-keyword behavior despite the surrounding deferral text; this is the likely explanation, not a confirmed account of maintainer intent.
The actual #7805 merge, 88aaa754566d119b6b8fc898f8fb47602387d82e, still preserves routing for a connected Link Child. It does not contain this PR's restoration implementation. The remaining R6 issue concerns this unmerged implementation, not a claim that it was shipped in main.
The existing maintainer disposition still applies: preserve fcb8c97e, resume after the release with a normal dev merge and fresh review. No code, base branch, Ready status, merge setting, or release hold was changed. For future release text, a non-closing reference such as “the deferred native-restore work in PR #7736” would avoid this ambiguity.

Revalidate ownership after each lock wait.
stopRestoreWriteGuard.run() reacquires C for each callback, but it caches the first "restore" decision. In performStopTeardown, the initial check runs before the asynchronous native restore. If restoration then waits for the config-file lock, a hub connection can publish during that wait. The later guarded write reacquires C but does not inspect ownership again, so it can overwrite the new connection's Codex or catalog state. The subsequent Grok callback has the same stale boundary.
This contradicts the ownership and non-interleaving claims in structure/runtime.md:338-339 and structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md:519-520.
Suggested guard fix
- if (boundary === "restore") boundary = inspectStopRestoreOwnership();+ if (boundary !== "restore") throw new StopRestoreOwnershipError(boundary);+ boundary = inspectStopRestoreOwnership();
if (boundary !== "restore") throw new StopRestoreOwnershipError(boundary);
Keep the existing real-writer R6 tests and make the api-file-hub and related cases pass with this per-callback revalidation.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding "Revalidate ownership after each lock wait" (review 5674695455, structure/runtime.md:338-339): I checked this against head deb40c2d3 and it does not hold, so no change is planned.
stopRestoreWriteGuard().run() (src/client/restore-ownership.ts) acquires C (withConfigMutationLockSync) for every callback and, inside that lock, runs if (boundary === "restore") boundary = inspectStopRestoreOwnership(); before the write. While the cached value is "restore" it therefore re-inspects ownership on every call, including after any wait for the config lock. The cached value is only reused once it has become "hub-owned" or "unproven", and in that case the guard throws without writing, which is the intended latch. The suggested diff is behaviorally equivalent to the current code.
Real-writer coverage for exactly this sequence already exists in tests/service/stop-deferred-teardown.test.ts: "R6 real restore revalidates after waiting on writer (native-hub | file-hub | native-pending)" and "R6 follow-up real writes (api-native-hub | api-file-hub | api-native-pending | late-catalog-hub | late-history-hub) preserve new ownership" all pass on this head and fail when the guard is reverted.

@lidge-jun You are correct. I withdraw “Revalidate ownership after each lock wait” from review 5674695455. No code change is needed for this finding.
I inspected head deb40c2d3bec896e9f536e42a62a7347f73b06c0:
In src/client/restore-ownership.ts, Line 32 acquires C for each run() call. Line 34 then re-inspects ownership while the boundary is "restore". This check runs after lock acquisition, including after a lock wait.
At Line 35, a cached "hub-owned" or "unproven" boundary throws before write() at Line 36. The guard retains refusal, not permission to write.
In tests/service/stop-deferred-teardown.test.ts, Line 369 and Line 404 define the cited real-writer regression groups. Their assertions check unchanged persisted state and zero Grok cleanup calls.
structure/runtime.md, Line 338 already documents revalidation under C at each restoration write.
My finding incorrectly treated "restore" as cached write permission. The current guard does not do that.
I verified the source and test definitions. I did not rerun the tests. This withdrawal applies only to this finding; it does not establish overall merge readiness.

Summary
Explicitly stopping a Remote Link Child now restores local Native Codex routing, its catalog and resume history, and the managed Grok config, while keeping the saved Home connection. Before this change a stopped Child left Codex pointed at a closed, unauthenticated loopback port. Hub-client connections keep their existing ownership policy: their routing, catalog, history and Grok config are never restored over.
