Summary

  • Local stop requests always connect directly to the loopback runtime and ignore HTTP(S)/ALL proxy environment variables.
  • Select the existing direct local transport in the shared stop helper, retaining explicit fetchFn injection and existing stop/refusal behavior. An observed HTTP 409 remains a refusal if its explanatory body cannot be read.
  • Add real-listener regressions for plain/deferred stop requests and incomplete refusal responses, plus source checks covering standalone CLI stop, service cleanup, and uninstall. Update the runtime contract and both test-layout registrations.

Verification

Windows; repository-pinned .\node_modules\bun\bin\bun.exe v1.4.4. All test commands use $env:OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE = '1'.

  • Regression first on bada676a64193dff6147a08ebda2796d6bb08a11: bun.exe test tests/service/stop-direct-fetch.test.ts — 3 passed, 2 failed in the two proxy-environment routing cases. After the initial change: 5 passed, 0 failed.
  • Refusal compatibility regression first: bun.exe test tests/service/stop-direct-fetch.test.ts -t 'retains stop semantics' — 1 passed, 2 failed before the status-preserving adapter; all three pass afterwards.
  • bun.exe test tests/service/stop-direct-fetch.test.ts tests/lib/process-control-graceful.test.ts tests/server/local-management-direct-transport.test.ts — 60 passed, 0 failed; 192 assertions.
  • bun.exe test tests/service/stop-deferred-teardown.test.ts tests/service/service-stop-verification.test.ts tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts tests/cli/cli-management-auth.test.ts tests/cli/cli-stop-json.test.ts tests/cli/uninstall.test.ts tests/providers/xai/grok-lifecycle.test.ts — 280 passed, 0 failed; 1,601 assertions.
  • bun.exe test tests/lib/process-control.test.ts tests/update/update-stop-first.test.ts — 27 passed, 1 existing platform skip, 0 failed; 226 assertions.
  • bun.exe test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 38 passed, 0 failed; 664 assertions. File-size caps were not increased.
  • bun.exe run typecheck, bun.exe run structure:check, bun.exe run privacy:scan — passed.
  • Expanded verification on the final code: bun.exe test @testFiles — 675 passed, 1 existing platform skip, 2 failed, 1 error; 5,250 assertions across 20 files. $testFiles consists of the three tests/service/*stop*.test.ts files; tests/lib/process-control-graceful.test.ts, tests/providers/xai/grok-lifecycle.test.ts, tests/server/local-management-direct-transport.test.ts, tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts; and these tests/cli/ files: cli-capabilities, cli-effort, cli-headless-parity, cli-help, cli-dispatch, cli-management-auth, cli-start-journal-order, cli-restart-health, cli-stop-json, cli-update-restart, restore-completes-shared-teardown, uninstall, sibling-home-client-sync (each ending in .test.ts). Both failures reproduced independently on clean bada676a64193dff6147a08ebda2796d6bb08a11: cli-help.test.ts:378 (ocx1 history recovery exits 1) and sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts:432 (custom-home startup times out at 30 seconds, followed by a child-exit assertion). These are outside this change's stop transport scope.
  • Independent final source review: PASS, zero blockers; the prior 409-body compatibility finding was addressed and covered by the TCP regressions above. This is separate from runtime and CI evidence.
  • NOT RUN: full suite, import-graph test:changed, hosted CI, macOS/Linux validation. The requested validation is deliberately limited to focused Windows checks; remaining platform and full-suite coverage is left to CI.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Local runtime stop requests now connect directly to the target, even when proxy settings are configured.
    • A stop refusal is still reported when the server responds with HTTP 409 but the response body is incomplete or stalls.
    • Other HTTP errors continue to be handled separately, and configured fetch overrides remain supported.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified local runtime stop behavior; the documented teardown and GUI stop flows are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Local runtime stop requests now use a proxy-independent direct transport by default. The response parser reports HTTP status before body completion, allowing an observed 409 refusal to remain detectable when the body is truncated or times out. Tests cover proxy behavior and response handling.

Changes: Local Stop Transport

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose parsed response status
src/server/direct-local-http.ts
The direct local HTTP transport reports the parsed response status before continuing response framing.
Use direct transport for stop requests
src/lib/process-control.ts, tests/service/stop-direct-fetch.test.ts, structure/runtime.md, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Stop requests use the direct transport by default, unless an injected fetchFn is provided. If body reading fails after an HTTP 409, the request wrapper returns a 409 response; errors after other statuses are rethrown. Tests cover truncated or stalled response bodies, proxy handling, and stop callers.

If a runtime accepts a stop request but its response body stalls or truncates, the runtime can be force-killed before it finishes draining and shared-config teardown. The fix is a one-line change. Resolve it before merge.

Keep an accepted stop out of the forced-stop fallback when its 200 body fails.

If the runtime accepts the stop with HTTP 200 and then stalls or truncates the body, directLocalHttpFetch rejects after it has reported status 200. stopRequestFetch rethrows that error because only 409 is handled. The rejection then reaches the catch around fetchFn in stopProxyGracefullyDetailed, which returns false. stopProxy then calls killProxy without waiting for the accepted stop to drain or exit. The runtime may still be draining and shared-config teardown may not run.

Return a bodyless 200 for this post-status failure, as the code already does for 409. The existing success path then handles it. res.json() rejects on the empty body, and .catch(() => null) converts that to null. The result is teardown-unconfirmed, which waits for exit and skips killProxy. If the process does not exit within the drain deadline, the existing path still falls back to killProxy.

Maintainer dev integration record (release 2.93 dev-merge loop). Release-captain decision for a change that touches transport of the local management credential header, under the admin decision authority delegated for this release; it rests on the independent review below and is not an approving review.

  • Exact head: 77eb64a.
  • Required CI on the exact head: PR CI run 40308771050 (ci, gates, test 1/4–4/4: success), enforce-target 40308771102: success, hygiene 40308771143: success.
  • Cross-platform CI lane=all on this head, run 40308814984 — windows 1/9–9/9, macos, test shards and gates: success.
  • Independent review (separate agent, credential-handling scope): PASS, zero blocking. All production stop callers (standalone CLI stop, service cleanup, uninstall) use the direct transport; mutation checks show both new proxy-environment regressions fail when the global fetch default is restored, and both 409 body-failure tests fail without status observation. Remaining non-helper senders are the dashboard's browser fetch and an acceptance harness.
  • Maintainer recheck on the head merged onto current origin/dev 8a3be77: stop/process-control/direct-transport/deferred-teardown tests plus layout, ratchet and core-lab boundary 227 pass / 1 skip / 0 fail; typecheck exit 0; structure:check pass.
  • Non-blocking follow-up: qualify the 409 note in structure/runtime.md as applying to the default wrapper (the connected-client override keeps its existing behavior).

… restore boundary

Resolve structure/runtime.md against lidge-jun#7754 (direct local stop transport). Fix the round-5 HIGH: a late not-owned refusal let the parent restore over a hub connection committed while the stop was in flight. restoreBoundaryOwnership re-reads persisted connection state under the client lifecycle lock (released before restoration takes N, per N -> L -> C); a hub owner skips restoration and settles this run and recovered receipts, a busy or failing lock keeps the obligation and fails the stop. Regressions cover hub commits during orphan discovery and during the POST, with and without a receipt, plus the busy-lock case.
