fix(codex): validate CLI and desktop launcher execution boundaries - #7876
Closes#7860, the remaining execution-boundary follow-up to #7758.
The CLI launcher resolved its final Codex backing command and spawned it directly. A generated ChatGPT app-server launcher verified its target when written but reused that decision on later starts. Both paths now await the existing shared executable trust check at each launch.
Validate the CLI's final resolved backing immediately before spawn, including help/version and passthrough, and use the returned canonical invocation with its Windows interpreter options.
Add the hidden internal codex-exec-target -- <path> helper. It emits one verified path only on success, rejects newline-bearing input/output, and skips root shim auto-repair even for malformed arguments.
Re-enter that helper before every generated app-server exec, including respawns and both filter branches. Missing/failed/empty validation refuses startup with exit 126; no unchecked target fallback remains. A missing recorded binary retains exit 127.
Preserve ordinary non-bundle trust policy, argv, stdin/stderr, shell-exec process identity and real server exit status. Update EN/TR user guidance and the owner contract docs for verification failure and relocated-runtime behavior.
Verified base: f9e7d939d125c810aa3f3d700dcb8b0cb4129a0f. Original publication head 1e496e07338307c426321ac0859f0611571b380a, tree f5dceb6a6e2209a37d4613cb669ffdb323a1a7b1, matched the locally verified index at that time. During publication the maintainer merged #7870; a read-only merge-tree check with newer dev@492c1a15228d3af69e313e1191be3e42dbb15e55 is clean. That is a conflict check, not a combined-tree full-suite result.

Current head: a01ec302625c7b10f03054ecc5a2c1fa837f11b9, based directly on maintainer head 9d96e4533b9692a09f562f25e32394a402fa2fbf. This one-line comment correction addresses r4397376101: argument checks are command-specific. The executable-target parser and restart behavior are unchanged. Bun 1.4.4 transpilation is byte-identical before/after (2,184 bytes; SHA256 76da7421e10bc4939baec6969855593d91b3d9c9a411f6911980f9fb3b54e5f2), and git diff --check passes. No unchanged behavioral suite was rerun for this comment-only change.
Independent source review covered the seven changed runtime files, shared executable trust policy, lexical/canonical and renamed/nested bundle containment, captured canonical handoff, argv/exit-status preservation and added regressions at 9d96e453. No additional blocker was found. The new comment has identical emitted code; this is an independent code-review observation, not explicit maintainer security acceptance or installed-native validation.
Exact prior-head CI 40684775295: 14 successful jobs / 10 policy skips. Current-head CI 40796032802 completed successfully: 14 successful jobs / 10 policy skips, confirmed at 2026-10-29 01:00 UTC. All four Ubuntu test shards and the aggregate passed. The one review thread is resolved; CodeRabbit confirmed the command-specific wording correction. Current-head Catalog 40796032722 succeeded. Native Windows/macOS acceptance and explicit maintainer security acceptance remain unverified. Keep Draft; earlier fixture failures and their unchanged-base comparison below remain historical evidence, not current-head passing tests.

The full repository suite was not run under the documented concurrent-worktree resource exception. Independent source review found no new blocker. Portable injected-verifier and Linux Bash tests establish the call-site behavior, not native macOS codesign/ownership acceptance, a real ChatGPT Desktop restart, or a compiled launcher's native execution. Review follow-up and hosted status
The behavioral head 93eb841e5dc413e39a090442c716eca6f84bdabb completed Cross-platform CI 40637879759 successfully, including all four Ubuntu shards. CodeRabbit's completed review reported no actionable code findings and one docstring-coverage warning (75% against 80%). The warning corresponded to the changed handleInternalCommand dispatcher lacking its own function documentation.
Normal follow-up commit 1e496e07338307c426321ac0859f0611571b380a adds only that contract comment: strict argument checks, command-specific exit codes, and one trusted stdout path after validation. Bun's TypeScript transpiler produced byte-identical JavaScript before and after the comment; the staged diff check passed. No behavioral tests were repeated for this comment-only change. The preceding CI and review are historical evidence for 93eb841; the then-new head's hosted checks and documentation re-review were pending at that earlier update. Current-head results are recorded above.
Native policy skips do not establish macOS/Windows acceptance. Explicit maintainer/security acceptance remains required and the PR remains Draft. The successful preceding hosted run does not erase the recorded local unchanged-base fixture failures.

Bug Fixes
The desktop launcher now verifies the application before every start, including restarts. If verification or a required component is unavailable, startup is refused rather than running an unverified app.
When output filtering is unavailable or fails its self-test, the verified app starts with its output unchanged.
On macOS, Codex launches now verify app-bundle ownership, permissions, signature, and executable containment—including for help, version, and passthrough commands. Failed checks prevent launch; ordinary executables outside app bundles retain their existing behavior.
Documentation
Updated guidance explains these checks and includes ocx chatgpt restore as an option for removing the desktop override.

Walkthrough
The Codex CLI and generated ChatGPT app-server launcher now validate executable targets before launch. The app-server launcher repeats validation on each invocation and checks filesystem trust before publication. Failed validation prevents execution; filter unavailability or a failed filter self-test permits validated execution with untouched stdout.
The Codex launcher validates resolved commands before spawning, including help/version and passthrough paths. On macOS, bundle targets are checked for canonical containment. The hidden codex-exec-target command verifies a path and returns the canonical target. Tests cover validation, refusal, Windows invocation options, and shim auto-restore behavior.
The generated launcher validates the executable before filtered or passthrough execution and checks filesystem trust before publication. Failed validation or an empty target prevents launch with status 126; filter unavailability or a failed filter self-test still allows validated execution with untouched stdout. Tests cover repeated validation, revoked authorization, missing validators, and empty validator output.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(codex): validate CLI and desktop launcher execution boundaries" matches the main change. The changeset adds executable-trust validation before the CLI launches the resolved Codex command and before each generated desktop app-server launch or respawn. It also adds the hidden internal codex-exec-target helper, bundle containment checks, and related docs and tests. The title is specific and single-sentence, and it avoids vague terms. The title is 66 characters and 8 words, which is within normal length for a conventional-commit title.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#7860] is the only active directly linked issue. The implementation meets its coding requirements. In src/cli/codex-launcher.ts, spawnCodex resolves the final command and awaits validatedCodexExecInvocationAsync with verifyAnyAppBundle: true before spawning. The returned invocation preserves canonical paths and Windows options. The path covers help, version, and passthrough launches. In src/chatgpt/app-server-shim/launcher.ts, buildChatgptShimLauncher validates the recorded target before each filtered or passthrough exec, so respawns re-enter validation. Validator failure, unavailable validation, and empty output return 126. A missing recorded binary retains exit 127. src/cli/internal-command.ts supplies the hidden codex-exec-target validator with strict argument and newline checks, and src/cli/codex-shim-autorestore.ts prevents shim repair for that command. src/codex/exec-boundary.ts adds recorded bundle-root and lexical/canonical containment checks, including renamed and nested bundles, while preserving non-bundle passthrough. The added integration tests cover revalidation, refusal, argv and status preservation, Windows invocation options, containment, aliases, and launcher publication safety. Documentation changes record the refusal and relocated-runtime behavior. Native macOS signing and real Desktop respawn acceptance remain unverified, but the source and automated test evidence establish the requested coding behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files remain connected to [#7860]. src/cli/codex-launcher.ts, src/chatgpt/app-server-shim/launcher.ts, src/cli/internal-command.ts, src/cli/codex-shim-autorestore.ts, and src/codex/exec-boundary.ts implement the two required execution boundaries and their fail-closed handoff. The bundle-root and launcher-filesystem checks support safe repeated validation and publication. The new and updated tests, layout registrations, and fixtures verify this behavior. The English, Turkish, Korean, and contract documentation changes describe the implemented launch validation and failure behavior. No unrelated feature, cleanup, or product area is demonstrated by the reviewed diff.

Maintainer update: I pushed two commits on top of 1e496e073 as a fast-forward (your commits are unchanged). Head is now 2143ac2ff.
Independent security reviews found that renamed app bundles bypassed the new per-launch validation. Desktop discovery accepts any bundle whose identifier is com.openai.codex, but the execution boundary recognised bundles only by name (ChatGPT.app, Codex.app or a conventional-root alias). A discovered ChatGPT Beta.app therefore skipped the ownership, permission, link, signature and Team ID checks. The reviewer reproduced this for both launch paths: with a refusing verifier, ChatGPT.app ran one trust check and was refused, while ChatGPT Beta.app ran none and launched.
31c1e0f86: the generated app-server launcher embeds the discovered bundle root and passes it to a strict --bundle-root helper. On every invocation the helper verifies canonical containment plus the shared bundle trust, whatever the bundle is called. An empty or missing root fails closed. Launcher publication checks the ownership and POSIX replacement permissions of the launcher and its ancestors. No sidecar file is trusted.
2143ac2ff: ocx codex now checks bundle membership from the executable's canonical location, so a renamed bundle, a symlink into one, and a recorded shim backing path are all validated. Executables outside any app bundle (for example an npm-installed codex) behave as before.
Evidence (pinned Bun 1.4.4; native macOS signing not available on this host):
Desktop launcher regression: 1 pass / 8 fail before 31c1e0f86 (a revoked renamed bundle exited 0, expected 1), all pass after. CLI regression: 1 pass / 6 fail on 31c1e0f86, 7 pass on 2143ac2ff.
typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan, git diff --check and the docs build (593 pages) pass.
The security review of 31c1e0f86 confirmed for the launcher that an empty root fails closed, that Git Bash quoting holds for spaces, quotes, $, backticks and newlines (newline paths are refused), and that the verify-then-exec window is not widened.
Not run: local test:changed (it reached the existing 900 s limit on this shared host), native macOS signature and real Desktop respawn, and the full suite.
A fresh independent security review of this head is starting.
Maintainer update: two more commits pushed as a fast-forward on top of 2143ac2ff. Head is now 9d96e4533.
A third security review of 2143ac2ff found that bundle classification used only the executable's canonical (symlink-resolved) path. A path inside a bundle, for example ChatGPT Beta.app/Contents/Resources/codex, that is a symlink to a file outside any bundle was classified as a plain executable, so the bundle validation was not applied. With a verifier that refuses everything, ChatGPT.app was refused, while that symlinked member of ChatGPT Beta.app launched without a validation call.
a0dc31dd6 classifies a launch by both the path as given and its canonical target. If the given path is inside a .app, the launch is a bundle launch, and the canonical target must stay inside that bundle's canonical root. Otherwise the launch is refused through the existing containment refusal.
9d96e4533 adds cases for nested-root escapes, valid aliases that stay inside the bundle, and an alias replaced during verification, each for a direct path and for a recorded shim backing path.
Evidence (pinned Bun 1.4.4):
Containment cases: 20 fail / 5 pass on 2143ac2ff, 33 pass on 9d96e4533.
typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan, git diff --check, the docs build and a Git Bash launcher smoke test pass.
The three Desktop tests that timed out once during review ("a launch refused over a dropped chatgptDesktop block names the failing field", "status shows a plain off for a valid, absent or unreadable block", "launch still requires opt-in and an app-server binary") pass on dev, on 1e496e073, on 2143ac2ff and on this head. That timeout has not been reproduced.
Not run: local test:changed (it reached the existing 900 s limit on this shared host), native macOS signing and real Desktop respawn, and the full suite.
A fresh independent security review of this head is starting.
Exact-head follow-up: a01ec30 completed Cross-platform CI 40796032802 successfully (14 success / 10 policy skips, all four Ubuntu shards and aggregate passed). Catalog 40796032722 also succeeded. The sole review thread r4397376101 is resolved and CodeRabbit confirmed the wording correction.
The one-line change emits byte-identical JavaScript; independent source review found no additional blocker. CI success, that source review, and explicit maintainer/native acceptance remain separate. Windows/macOS policy skips are not native execution evidence. The description now marks older-head validation as historical; Draft and the remaining acceptance requirements are unchanged.
Pre-spawn verification now resolves the executable, so a target that vanished after selection surfaced as a raw ENOENT instead of the install hint the spawn path prints.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Directories named *.app without Contents/ make ordinary executables refuse to launch.
The enclosingApp regex at Line 132 matches any path segment that ends in .app. It does not require /Contents/. When verifyAnyAppBundle is true, any ordinary codex that lives under such a directory is classified as a bundle member.
Example: ~/dev/example.app/node_modules/.bin/codex. Directories named like the .app TLD are common for web projects.
For that path, bundle becomes ~/dev/example.app. The check at Line 141 then requires the binary to be under <bundle>/Contents/. It never is, so the code throws CodexExecTrustError("the app-bundle exec target is outside bundle Contents"). spawnCodex returns 1.
This contradicts the stated behavior that "ordinary non-bundle executables retain their behavior". The previous macCodexAppBundleFor only matched ChatGPT/Codex names, so this is new.
A real bundle member always has .app/Contents/ in its path. The generated launcher already uses /^(.*?\.app)\/Contents\//i for this reason. Apply the same rule here.

// Verify the outer canonical app for nested layouts, but retain lexical containment.
const enclosing = deps.verifyAnyAppBundle && binary !== null ? enclosingApp(binary) : undefined;
Add a regression test to tests/codex-integration/exec-cli-renamed-app-bundle.test.ts. It must launch an ordinary /opt/example.app/node_modules/.bin/codex and expect exit 0 with no trust check.
Re-run the existing containment tests after the change. Every escape case in them keeps /Contents/ in the lexical path, so they should still refuse. Update the docs wording "inside any .app bundle" to name the X.app/Contents/ layout.

Review. Two fresh independent reviews ran on a01ec30 (correctness, plus a dedicated security review), followed by a fresh pre-merge review on f2a1421: PASS.
Correctness: when the selected CLI disappeared before verification, ocx codex printed a raw ENOENT instead of the install hint. Fixed in f2a1421, with a regression that fails without the fix.
Correctness/security, rebutted: verification failures print local executable/bundle paths to stderr. This is the same local detail the existing spawn-error path already prints (spawn <path> ENOENT, Failed to launch codex: <message>). It contains no request, credential or account data. The pre-merge reviewer accepted the rebuttal.
Security, known limitation: the shared bundle-trust policy does not inspect macOS extended ACLs. The limitation predates this PR and is documented in structure/clients/chatgpt-desktop.md ("These checks do not attest ACL or mount-policy restrictions"). This PR applies the existing policy at two more launch boundaries that previously had no check, and weakens nothing. Extended-ACL inspection remains separate follow-up work.
Union. The branch was 67+ commits behind and touched test-layout registrations (layout-clients.json, test-layout-expected.json), so 603636f merges dev with no conflicts. The first CI run on f2a1421 failed one unrelated case: remote-workspace-server.test.ts hit EADDRINUSE on a randomly chosen port. That file is untouched here, and it passed 9/9 locally at the head. The merge head then ran fresh CI. On devd389699c merged with this head: typecheck, layout/tooling/ratchet 38 pass, structure:check pass.
Verification. Windows x64 (Bun 1.4.4) at the fix head: the 8 exec-boundary and launcher files passed 125 pass / 12 platform skips / 0 fail. At the merge head: typecheck, layout/ratchet/launcher tests 90 pass / 6 skip / 0 fail.
Exact-head CI. Cross-platform run 41049620503 on 603636f completed success, including all four Ubuntu test shards, gates, docs site build, structure gate and the ci aggregate.
Not run: native macOS codesign/ACL behavior and an installed Desktop respawn. The macOS jobs are policy-skipped on PRs.

Summary
Closes #7860, the remaining execution-boundary follow-up to #7758.
The CLI launcher resolved its final Codex backing command and spawned it directly. A generated ChatGPT app-server launcher verified its target when written but reused that decision on later starts. Both paths now await the existing shared executable trust check at each launch.
internal codex-exec-target -- <path>helper. It emits one verified path only on success, rejects newline-bearing input/output, and skips root shim auto-repair even for malformed arguments.Verified base:

During publication the maintainer merged #7870; a read-only merge-tree check with newerdev@492c1a15228d3af69e313e1191be3e42dbb15e55is clean. That is a conflict check, not a combined-tree full-suite result.Verification
Current follow-up — 2026-10-29
Current head:
a01ec302625c7b10f03054ecc5a2c1fa837f11b9, based directly on maintainer head9d96e4533b9692a09f562f25e32394a402fa2fbf. This one-line comment correction addresses r4397376101: argument checks are command-specific. The executable-target parser and restart behavior are unchanged. Bun 1.4.4 transpilation is byte-identical before/after (2,184 bytes; SHA25676da7421e10bc4939baec6969855593d91b3d9c9a411f6911980f9fb3b54e5f2), andgit diff --checkpasses. No unchanged behavioral suite was rerun for this comment-only change.Independent source review covered the seven changed runtime files, shared executable trust policy, lexical/canonical and renamed/nested bundle containment, captured canonical handoff, argv/exit-status preservation and added regressions at
9d96e453. No additional blocker was found. The new comment has identical emitted code; this is an independent code-review observation, not explicit maintainer security acceptance or installed-native validation.Exact prior-head CI 40684775295: 14 successful jobs / 10 policy skips. Current-head CI 40796032802 completed successfully: 14 successful jobs / 10 policy skips, confirmed at 2026-10-29 01:00 UTC. All four Ubuntu test shards and the aggregate passed. The one review thread is resolved; CodeRabbit confirmed the command-specific wording correction. Current-head Catalog 40796032722 succeeded. Native Windows/macOS acceptance and explicit maintainer security acceptance remain unverified. Keep Draft; earlier fixture failures and their unchanged-base comparison below remain historical evidence, not current-head passing tests.
Historical original-publication validation
Pinned Bun 1.4.4, repository preload and isolated fixtures.
The remaining 21 changed-impact failures are environment-specific credential fixtures: this host's existing
/etc/codex/config.tomland/etc/codex/requirements.tomltrigger the existing additional-layer refusal on both the unchanged base and candidate. Those files were neither read nor modified; no product guard was weakened. The changed-impact run is not all green. An earlier run also had 19 loopback HTTP failures from inherited outbound-proxy variables; removing those variables resolved them in the final run.Actual focused command (with the pinned Bun on PATH):
Untouched-base comparison in a separate checkout of

Independent source review found no new blocker. Portable injected-verifier and Linux Bash tests establish the call-site behavior, not native macOS codesign/ownership acceptance, a real ChatGPT Desktop restart, or a compiled launcher's native execution. The existing shared abort/reap contract is reused; no new process-level cancellation acceptance is claimed. No live app, vendor account or provider was operated.
Review follow-up and hosted status
The behavioral head
93eb841e5dc413e39a090442c716eca6f84bdabbcompleted Cross-platform CI 40637879759 successfully, including all four Ubuntu shards. CodeRabbit's completed review reported no actionable code findings and one docstring-coverage warning (75% against 80%). The warning corresponded to the changedhandleInternalCommanddispatcher lacking its own function documentation.Normal follow-up commit
1e496e07338307c426321ac0859f0611571b380aadds only that contract comment: strict argument checks, command-specific exit codes, and one trusted stdout path after validation. Bun's TypeScript transpiler produced byte-identical JavaScript before and after the comment; the staged diff check passed. No behavioral tests were repeated for this comment-only change. The preceding CI and review are historical evidence for93eb841; the then-new head's hosted checks and documentation re-review were pending at that earlier update. Current-head results are recorded above.Native policy skips do not establish macOS/Windows acceptance. Explicit maintainer/security acceptance remains required and the PR remains Draft. The successful preceding hosted run does not erase the recorded local unchanged-base fixture failures.
