Summary

DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute<TScope> disposes each scope through an OnDispose handler it subscribes on TestBuilderContext.Current.Events while its row is fetched. The test was built with a separate test-specific context whose events started empty, so those subscriptions were lost and no scope was ever disposed. This happened in both source-generated and reflection modes.

  • TestBuilderContext.ShareEventsWith (internal) lets the test-specific context use the per-iteration context's events lazily, the same way ShareStateBagWith shares the state bag. Nothing is allocated unless something subscribes.
  • The class row's first fetch (fix(engine): reuse the first class-data fetch for the first test of a class row #7195) now runs against a context of its own. Its events travel with the UnclaimedClassRow to the test that takes it, or that tracks it when it was lent to a temporary instance for an instance method data source. A row handed back with Return (incompatible generic data) keeps its events, and the SkipIfEmpty skipped test takes them.
  • OnDispose is now raised once per test, in TestCoordinator's final cleanup, rather than after each attempt. Retries reuse the row's objects, so disposing a scope after a failed attempt broke the retry. The cleanup also runs for skipped tests, so their scopes are disposed. This matches the documented meaning of OnDispose (raised when the test context is disposed). The test instance is still disposed after every attempt. Behavior change: OnDispose handlers registered by users or hooks used to run once per attempt, before the instance was disposed. They now run once per test, after the instance is disposed. No test or doc in the repository depends on the old timing.
  • Services that a disposable DI scope resolves are now disposed only by that scope. DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute marks them as externally owned (ObjectTracker.MarkExternallyOwned, internal), so the object tracker no longer disposes them a second time when the test ends, and it no longer disposes a root singleton early either. A non-disposable scope cannot dispose what Create returns, so the tracker still disposes those objects. The XML docs on Create state this contract.
  • IAsyncInitializer objects that tracking discovery finds through the properties of such a service, at any depth, are marked externally owned too. The tracker still initializes them but no longer disposes them after the scope has. Values of TUnit-injected data-source properties stay with the tracker.
  • A failed data-row test now takes the events its row's data sources subscribed, so a scope created for a row that fails is still disposed (Failed data-row tests drop builder-context events, so DI scopes of failed rows are never disposed #7326). This covers generic resolution failures, constraint violations, a temporary instance that fails to construct, and SkipIfEmpty generic-inference failures, in the eager and streaming paths.
  • Tests that never reach TestCoordinator still raise OnDispose, once: a test skipped because a dependency failed, a test that the run's cancellation stopped before it started, and a test that circular-dependency detection fails and removes (TestOnDisposeRaiser). Before this change, the session-end sweep disposed their DI services. Those services are externally owned now, so without this they would not be disposed.
  • A dependency injection scope created for a static property subscribes on TestSessionContext.GlobalStaticPropertyContext, which no test owns. StaticPropertyHandler now raises that context's OnDispose once at session end, before it untracks static properties, so those scopes and the services they own are disposed.
  • Cleanup of rows that no test takes is logged, not thrown, so a failing handler no longer drops the method's later rows. A class row is initialized inside the block that releases its cleanup, so a failing discovery initializer still disposes the row's scope. When static property initialization fails, the tests' callbacks run before the session's. Reflection discovery of a generic class's data rows (to infer its type arguments) defers their cleanup to the end of the session that discovered them, because every test of the partition shares those objects. The session's final cleanup raises it, even when no test executes, and so does disposal of a discovery-only session's services; a concurrent session in server mode never raises it. An object counted by another source just before it was marked externally owned is released without being disposed.
  • docs/docs/writing-tests/dependency-injection.md documents when a scope is disposed and who disposes resolved services.
  • The unused streaming path (BuildSingleTestAsync) gets the same treatment with a per-iteration context, so the two copies stay consistent. Its removal is tracked in TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327.

Code that a data source's enumerator runs after a yield still sees the context of the row it just built. UniqueBuilderContextsOnEnumerableDataGeneratorTests pins that contract, and this PR leaves it unchanged.

Tests

New tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7205 and TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7205Tests check that every scope is created once per test and disposed. They cover class-level DI, class-level DI with method rows and [Repeat], class-level DI with an instance method data source (the lent first fetch), method-parameter DI, a [Retry] test whose first attempt fails, a [Skip] test, a SkipIfEmpty test with an empty method source, a row that fails because its temporary instance cannot be constructed (FailedRowScopeTests, an intentional failure), and a non-disposable scope whose Create constructs a disposable service.

  • The _7205 observer also checks that each scope-owned service is disposed exactly once. That check fails without the tracker change (the services were disposed twice) and passes with it, in both modes.

  • New tests fail on main (0 of 2 scopes disposed) and pass with the fix, in source-gen and reflection modes.

  • FailedRowScopeTests fails without the failed-row change (0 of 1 scopes disposed). NonDisposableScopeTests fails without the disposable-scope check (the service is never disposed). Both pass in source-gen and reflection modes.

  • After those two changes: these Engine tests pass in reflection mode: Issue7205Tests (16 tests: 13 passed, 1 intentional failure, 2 skipped), Issue7123Tests, Issue7156Tests, Issue7157Tests, GenericConstraintValidationTests, GenericMethodWithDataSourceTests, RetryTests, SkipTests, FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests, DerivedSkipWithClassDataSourceTests. In source-gen and reflection modes, Bugs._7205, _7157, _7156, _6162, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest and MEDITest pass, and _7123 and _4715 show only their intentional failures. TUnit.UnitTests: 669 total, 0 failed.

  • Passing in both modes: Bugs._7157, Bugs.Issue5267, Bugs._2075, Bugs._6162, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest, MEDITest, UniqueBuilderContextsOnEnumerableDataGeneratorTests, ClassConstructorWithEnumerableTest.

  • TUnit.UnitTests: 668 total, 0 failed.

  • After the OnDispose change: the retry test fails without it (the retry sees a disposed scope). _7205 (14 tests: 12 passed, 2 skipped) and _7157 pass in source-gen and reflection modes, in Release and Debug. These Engine tests pass in source-gen and reflection modes: Issue7205Tests, Issue7157Tests, RetryTests, CustomRetryTests, SkipTests, SkipInHooksTests, SkipTestExceptionTests, DynamicSkipReasonTests, DerivedSkipWithClassDataSourceTests, FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests.

  • TUnit.Engine.Tests in reflection mode, full suite: 572 of 582 passed (566 succeeded, 6 skipped). Nine of the 10 failures took 1–6 minutes under full-suite load and passed when rerun on their own (FailFast, KeyedNotInParallel, filtering, FailTests). The tenth, FSharp.Test, fails locally with an FSharp.Core 11.0.0.0 load error from the local F# build output, which is unrelated to this change. CI covers it.

  • After the nested-ownership change: NestedScopeDependencyTests fails without it (the dependency is disposed twice) and passes with it. Bugs._7205 (17 tests: 14 passed, 1 intentional failure, 2 skipped), _7157, _6162, _4032, Issue5267, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest and MEDITest pass in source-gen and reflection modes. TUnit.UnitTests: 669 total, 0 failed.

  • After the injected-property change: NestedProbeService.Fixture (a TUnit-injected IAsyncInitializer beneath a scope-owned service) was never disposed without it (0 of 1), and is disposed exactly once with it. Bugs._7205 (17 tests: 14 passed, 1 intentional failure, 2 skipped), _7157, _4032, Issue5267, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest and MEDITest pass in source-gen and reflection modes. TUnit.UnitTests: 669 total, 0 failed.

  • AOT mode was not run locally. The change adds no reflection, so CI covers AOT.

  • After the bypass-path change: DependencySkippedScopeTests fails without it (its scope is not disposed) and passes with it. Bugs._7205 (19 tests: 14 passed, 2 intentional failures, 3 skipped), _7157, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest, MEDITest, UniqueBuilderContextsOnEnumerableDataGeneratorTests and DependsOnTests pass in source-gen and reflection modes. TUnit.UnitTests: 2013 total, 0 failed.

  • After the circular-dependency change: CircularDependencyScopeTests fails without it (0 of 2 scopes disposed) and passes with it. Bugs._7205 (21 tests: 14 passed, 4 intentional failures, 3 skipped) passes in source-gen and reflection modes.

  • After the static-property change: new StaticPropertyScopeDisposalTests (TUnit.UnitTests) pin that the session-level raise disposes a static property's scope once and collects handler exceptions. A temporary static [DI] property (not committed) showed the static initializer's scope disposed at session end in source-gen and reflection modes, where nothing disposed it before. TUnit.UnitTests: 2019 total, 0 failed. Bugs._7205 (21 tests: 14 passed, 4 intentional failures, 3 skipped), Bugs._7204 and PropertySetterTests pass in source-gen and reflection modes.

  • After the review fixes in ca412cb: new InitFailingScopeTests fails without the initialization move (0 of 1 scopes disposed) and passes with it. Bugs._7205 (23 tests: 14 passed, 6 intentional failures, 3 skipped) passes in source-gen and reflection modes. _7106, _7157, DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest and MEDITest pass in both modes. _7107, _7118 and _7161 give identical counts in reflection mode before and after. TUnit.UnitTests: 676 total, 0 failed.

  • After the review fixes in 0eff2fe: new DeferredDiscoveryCleanupTests pin that deferred discovery cleanup is raised once, by its own session only. New ExternallyOwnedSingletonTests pin a root singleton shared by a DI scope and a non-owning source in each order; its race case fails without the UntrackObject change. TUnit.UnitTests: 681 total, 0 failed. Bugs._7205 (23 tests: 14 passed, 6 intentional failures, 3 skipped), _7205.FilterExcluded Observer, _7157 and DependencyInjectionScopeIsolationTest pass in source-gen and reflection modes.

Review of #7328

I read the diff and did not run the tests. I found no blocking issues.

What looks good

  • ShareEventsWith mirrors the existing ShareStateBagWith pattern and allocates only when something subscribes. The Events setter clears _eventsSource, so an explicit assignment always wins.
  • The class row's first fetch now runs on its own context, and its events travel with the UnclaimedClassRow. That covers the take, lend, Return and skipped-test paths. Clear() and TakeEvents() leave no stale events behind.
  • FetchFirstClassRowAsync restores contextAccessor.Current in a finally. In CreateInstanceForMethodDataSources, the finally that restores the base context is correct on every return path.
  • The tests assert exact scope counts and disposal for four different shapes, including the lent-instance case. That is the part most likely to regress.

Non-blocking suggestions

  1. TakeOrFetchAsync does builderContext.Events = events, which replaces any events already on that context. Today the context is always fresh, so this is safe. If a later change lets a subscription happen before the take, it would be silently dropped. A merge, or a debug assert that EventsIfCreated is null, would protect that invariant.
  2. The fetch-context construction is now duplicated in FetchFirstClassRowAsync and in the streaming-path iterationContext. A small CreateIterationContext(...) helper would keep the copies from drifting. TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 would remove the streaming copy anyway, so this is optional.
  3. ShareEventsWith copies a source's events if they already exist and otherwise links lazily. If the source later has its Events setter called, the linked context keeps pointing at the old container. Nothing does that today. A comment on the invariant would help.

The follow-ups #7326 and #7327 are reasonable to defer. Overall this is a clean, well-tested fix.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issue was found.

Summary

The PR carries data-source events to their tests and keeps DI scopes alive through retries. The latest changes also release scopes created for temporary instances and reflection discovery.

  • Disposable scopes dispose the services they resolve.
  • Data rows carry their cleanup callbacks to the test that takes them.
  • Disposal callbacks run once when their test or session is done.

Dispositions for the Claude review of fff2749:

  1. TakeOrFetchAsync replacing events. Done in 1630280: a Debug.Assert that the context has no events before the assignment. _7205 and _7157 pass in Debug builds, in both modes.
  2. Duplicated fetch-context construction. Not changed. The streaming copy goes away with TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327, which leaves only one construction site.
  3. ShareEventsWith invariant. Done in 1630280: the doc comment now says the link resolves to the container the source has on first read, and that nothing reassigns a shared source's Events.

The same push also fixes the retry and skipped-test findings from Codex and Greptile: OnDispose is now raised once per test, after its final attempt and on skip paths.

Review of #7328

The fix is sound. Sharing the per-iteration context's events lazily with the test-specific context, and carrying the first class-row fetch's events with UnclaimedClassRow, closes the DI-scope leak in both modes. The tests cover the awkward paths: lent rows, Return, SkipIfEmpty, skip, and retry.

Concern: OnDispose timing changes for all users

OnDispose used to fire in DisposeTestInstanceCoreAsync: per attempt, and before the instance was disposed. It now fires once, in the outer finally, after every attempt and after instance disposal. That is the right move for DI scopes, since the row's objects are reused across retries. It is a public-behavior change for anyone using Context.Events.OnDispose, though:

  • Retries: user handlers that used to run once per attempt now run once per test.
  • Ordering: handlers used to run before DisposeTestInstance and now run after it.

Neither is mentioned in the PR description. Please call it out, and confirm that no existing test or doc depends on per-attempt or before-instance-dispose ordering.

Smaller points

  • ShareEventsWith captures the link to source._events at first read. This is documented and nothing reassigns a shared source, but it's fragile. A Debug.Assert in the Events setter that fires when the context is a share source would pin the assumption.
  • Debug.Assert(builderContext.EventsIfCreated is null) in TakeOrFetchAsync only guards debug builds. In release, a non-null existing container would be silently replaced and its subscriptions dropped. Merging, or keeping the existing container, would be more defensive.
  • The fetch-context construction in FetchFirstClassRowAsync and in CreateInstanceForMethodDataSources repeats the same property copying. If TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 removes the streaming path this goes away. If not, a small child-context helper on TestBuilderContext would stop the two copies drifting.

Nothing blocking. Please just document the OnDispose semantic change.

Review

The approach is sound. Sharing events lazily, with ShareEventsWith mirroring ShareStateBagWith, avoids allocations and fixes the root cause. Moving OnDispose to once per test in TestCoordinator is also the right call, because retries reuse the row's objects. The tests cover the main cases: class row, method rows, the instance-method temporary instance, retry, skip and SkipIfEmpty. I only read the diff and did not build or run the tests.

Points to check:

  • Shared events across tests. testSpecificContext.ShareEventsWith(contextAccessor.Current) links every test built in one iteration to the same TestContextEvents. If one per-iteration context can produce several tests (for example [Repeat] or multiple expanded rows), each test will raise the same OnDispose handlers. A scope could then be disposed twice or before a sibling test finishes. The Repeat(1) cases in the new tests give some coverage. I'd add a case with Repeat(n>1) on a class-row source to pin the one-scope-per-test contract.
  • Late reassignment of Events. The doc comment says nothing reassigns a shared source. That invariant is only documented, not enforced. A Debug.Assert in the Events setter, or making the setter internal-only, would protect it.
  • FetchFirstClassRowAsync duplicates context construction. It builds a TestBuilderContext the same way as the streaming path (iterationContext). A small CreateFetchContext(base, ...) helper would keep the two copies from drifting. TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 removes the streaming path, so this is minor.
  • OnDispose timing change. Previously OnDispose ran after each attempt. User handlers registered by hooks now fire only after the final attempt. That matches the docs, but it's worth a changelog or release-notes line.

I don't see blocking problems.

Dispositions for the Claude reviews of 1630280 and 59045c9. None of these blocked the merge.

  1. OnDispose timing change. I added it to the PR description. OnDispose is now raised once per test instead of once per attempt, and it now runs after the test instance is disposed. I searched the tests and docs: nothing depends on per-attempt or before-instance-dispose ordering. The docs already describe OnDispose as raised when the test context is disposed. The retry, skip, and FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests Engine suites pass with the change.
  2. Shared events across tests / Repeat(n>1). I didn't add a test, because every test gets its own per-iteration context. Each repeat and each row fetches its own row, so it creates its own scope. ClassRowScopeWithMethodRowsTests and MethodParameterScopeTests already use [Repeat(1)] and assert exact scope counts (4 and 2). A shared scope would show up as fewer scopes than tests. A larger n exercises the same path.
  3. Debug.Assert only guards debug builds / setter assert. Not changed. The context in TakeOrFetchAsync is always fresh, and nothing reassigns a shared source's Events. The assert and the doc comment pin those invariants for anyone who changes them. Merging containers in release builds would hide a bug instead of surfacing one.
  4. Duplicated fetch-context construction. Not changed. As noted earlier, TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 removes the streaming copy.

Also new in 4805990: Codex found that the object tracker disposed scope-owned services a second time. The scope now owns them exclusively (see the resolved thread).

Review of PR 7328

The fix is sound. Events subscribed while a row is fetched now reach the test built from that row, and the lazy ShareEventsWith mirrors ShareStateBagWith without allocating. I reviewed the diff only and did not run any tests.

Concerns

  1. OnDispose timing is a public behaviour change. It used to run after each attempt and now runs once, after the final attempt. Any user or library handler that did per-attempt cleanup now runs later, and only once. The reasoning is valid for data-source scopes, but the change applies to every subscriber. Please note it in the release notes, and consider a test that pins OnDispose firing once across retries.
  2. ObjectTracker.MarkExternallyOwned uses process-global state (a static ConditionalWeakTable plus a flag that never resets). Ownership is really a property of the data source and test, so consider recording it on the test's context or the tracked-object registration. If you keep the global table, document that an object marked once is never tracked by any test, including shared instances.
  3. ShareEventsWith has a subtle contract. A later assignment to source.Events is not seen, yet TakeOrFetchAsync assigns builderContext.Events = events. That is safe today because of the Debug.Assert and a fresh context, but fragile. Use a dedicated internal handover method with a Release-time precondition check.
  4. Context construction is duplicated in FetchFirstClassRowAsync and CreateInstanceForMethodDataSources. A small TestBuilderContext factory helper would keep the copies from drifting, especially while the streaming path lives on until 7327.

Good

  • Both engine modes are covered by the new _7205 tests, including retries and skipped tests.
  • OnDispose now runs on skip and early-failure paths, which matches its documented meaning.

None of this blocks the PR. I would address item 1 before merging and treat items 2 and 4 as follow-ups.

Dispositions for the Claude review of 4805990 (none blocking):

  1. OnDispose timing change. It's already flagged as a behavior change in the PR description, so it goes into the release notes. RetriedScopeTests pins one OnDispose across retries: the scope must still be alive on the retry and be disposed exactly once.
  2. MarkExternallyOwned global state. Kept. Ownership belongs to the object: a service a scope resolved is disposed by that scope, whichever test holds it. A ConditionalWeakTable keyed on that object doesn't keep it alive. Since 2cfbcc2 only objects from a disposable scope are marked (see the Greptile thread), so a non-disposable scope's objects keep tracker disposal.
  3. ShareEventsWith / TakeOrFetchAsync contract. Unchanged, per the earlier disposition: the context is always fresh, and the assert plus the doc comment pin that.
  4. Duplicated fetch-context construction. TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 removes the streaming copy.

Also in 2cfbcc2: failed data-row tests now take their row's events, so a failed row's scope is disposed. This closes #7326.

Review of #7328

I read the diff and the earlier review threads, and I did not run the tests. I found no blocking issues.

What looks good

  • ShareEventsWith mirrors ShareStateBagWith, so it allocates only when something subscribes. It fixes the root cause (subscriptions lost on a separate test-specific context) in one place, so source-generated and reflection modes behave the same.
  • Raising OnDispose once per test in TestCoordinator is the right model, because retries reuse the row's objects. Running it for skipped and early-failed tests closes the leak on those paths.
  • MarkExternallyOwned is applied only when the scope is disposable. That avoids a double dispose without changing behavior for non-disposable scopes.
  • The tests cover lent rows, Return, SkipIfEmpty, retries and a failed row build.

Remaining points (non-blocking)

  1. Behavior change. OnDispose handlers now run once per test, after the instance is disposed, instead of once per attempt before it. The PR description already flags this. Put it in the release notes too, since user hooks that read the instance in OnDispose could be affected.
  2. Exception isolation. RaiseOnDisposeAsync sits before StopHoldingSharedReferences in the cleanup path. Each invocation is wrapped in try/catch, so one handler failing won't skip the later cleanup. If you add more cleanup steps there, keep the same isolation.
  3. Cancellation. If the cleanup runs after cancellation, check that a cancelled token can't stop a scope's disposal. InvokeAsync receives no token here, so this looks fine.

The earlier review dispositions look addressed. This is good to merge once CI is green.

…rows (#7205)

A row whose method data source, class row refetch, or object initialization
throws in the eager builder now hands the events it took (including the class
row's) to the method's failed test, instead of losing them in the outer catch.

Source-generated generic class row partitions evaluate their rows against a
context of their own and defer the cleanup subscribed there to session end, as
reflection discovery does for its inference rows. Before, a dependency
injection scope created during evaluation stayed on the build's base context,
which no test raises.

The session-end deferral moves into TestSessionContext so Core can use it.

Pushed 3336621: two review fixes on bca3622.

Review threads on bca3622

  • Codex P2 (Retain cleanup from source-generated partition evaluation): valid. Fixed and resolved. Partition evaluation now runs against its own context and defers its cleanup to session end, as reflection does.
  • Greptile P1 (Failed rows leave scopes open): valid. Fixed and resolved. When an eager-builder row throws, the method's failed test now takes the events of the row being built.
  • Greptile P1 (Services are disposed twice): no change, with evidence in the thread, which is resolved.

Claude review (comment 6569080513, on bca3622)
1–3 and 5 repeat the previous review. They are dispositioned in comment 6569073877 (and 6568726710), and nothing in this push changes those answers.
4. Cleanup errors only reach the log: they go through TUnitFrameworkLogger.LogErrorAsync, which is shown at the default log level. No change.
6. Coverage, in both modes: retry with a shared scope is RetriedScopeTests, a skipped test is SkippedScopeTests and SkippedIfEmptyScopeTests, and a class row fetch failure is ThrowingCreateScopeTests and InitFailingScopeTests. Discarding a generic method's row is covered at unit level by AsyncEventDetachTests. This push adds MethodRowThrowsScopeTests (a method row that fails after its scope was created) and GenericClassRowPartitionCleanupTests.

CI on bca3622: modularpipeline (ubuntu-latest) failed only in TUnit.Aspire.Tests EveryExit_CancelsAndJoinsPendingWaits(cancellation, True). That is the known flake #7282, and this PR touches no Aspire code. The new head gets a fresh run.

Validation on 3336621 (net10.0, Release):

  • Bugs._7205: 24 tests (14 passed, 7 intentional failures, 3 not executed) in source-generated and reflection modes. With the TestBuilder change reverted, the observer fails (8 failures).
  • Bugs._7210: 19 tests (15 passed, 1 intentional failure, 3 not executed) in both modes.
  • TUnit.UnitTests: GenericClassRowPartitionCleanupTests (fails without the partition change), DeferredDiscoveryCleanupTests, StaticPropertyScopeDisposalTests, ExternallyOwnedSingletonTests and AsyncEventDetachTests all pass.
  • Issue7205Tests counts were updated to 24/14/7/3. That project is not run locally, per AGENTS.md; CI covers it.

Review of #7328 (DI scope disposal via shared builder-context events)

I read the diff and did not run the tests. The fix addresses a real leak (#7205). Tying scope disposal to OnDispose and raising it once per test, rather than once per attempt, is the right model. The lazy ShareEventsWith mirrors the existing ShareStateBagWith. The coverage looks thorough, including the filter-excluded, skipped, cancelled, circular-dependency and static-property-failure paths. I found no clear correctness bug, but I have several design concerns.

1. Handlers receive a null TestContext
TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseDetachedAsync calls invocation.InvokeAsync(sender, null!). OnDispose is typed AsyncEvent<TestContext>, and the event args are non-nullable. The DI attribute ignores them (async (_, _)), so it works today. Any other handler that subscribes on a builder context and reads the TestContext will hit an NRE. The path is reachable for unclaimed class rows, discovery-deferred rows, and the global static-property context.

  • Suggestion: pass a real placeholder context, or use a separate session-scoped event type. If neither is feasible, document the null on ITestEvents.OnDispose. The remarks currently describe only the test-less case for tests that never run.

2. Behavior change to OnDispose timing
Handlers used to run before the instance was disposed, once per attempt. They now run after it, once per test. The PR description discloses this, and it is consistent with the documented meaning. But it is a silent breaking change for user and hook handlers that touch the instance, or that clean up per-retry resources. Consider calling it out in release notes or the migration doc, not only in the ITestEvents remarks. Consider also whether per-attempt cleanup deserves its own event instead of overloading OnDispose.

3. Global, permanent MarkExternallyOwned state
ObjectTracker now keeps a static ConditionalWeakTable plus a volatile flag. The mark is permanent and applies to every source that later supplies the object. The check-then-mark is documented as non-atomic, and the compensating logic is spread across UntrackObject, ShouldSkipTracking, the session-end sweep and ObjectGraphDiscoverer. The ObjectGraphDiscoverer branch (TryAddInjected/TryAddOwned/heldByExternalOwner) is the hardest part to reason about. It also marks nested initializer objects as a side effect of discovery.

  • Suggestion: an ownership model with the scope or data row as the owner would be simpler to verify. For example, the data source returns an owner handle and the tracker skips objects registered under it. That avoids process-wide marks, races and traversal-time mutation. If you keep the table, add a stress test for the race the remarks describe: one root singleton supplied concurrently by an owning and a non-owning source.

4. TestBuilder state-machine complexity
Event ownership now travels through UnclaimedClassRow (take, return, lend, release), unownedRowContext (cleared in a for iterator expression so that continue also clears it), the SnapshotClassRowDisposeCallbacks/DetachAllExcept diffing, and FetchFirstClassRowAsync. The reasoning is documented, but correctness depends on ordering invariants across about 8 continue/return sites, duplicated between the non-streaming and streaming builders. A future edit is likely to leak or double-raise.

  • Suggestion: introduce a small row-cleanup owner object with one Claim() and an idempotent ReleaseAsync(). Pass it with the row, and have the builder try/finally release whatever is unclaimed, instead of the pieces tracking it individually. Giving each row its own events container would also remove the snapshot-and-diff (DetachAllExcept) for discarded generic-method rows.

5. Smaller points

  • TakeOrFetchAsync throws InvalidOperationException if the builder context already has events. That is a good guard, but it would fail the whole method's build. It is unlikely to be reachable.
  • Discovery-deferred callbacks are raised in two places (the coordinator's final cleanup and TUnitServiceProvider.DisposeAsync), relying on TakeDeferredDiscoveryOnDispose for idempotency. That works, but a single owner of session cleanup would be easier to follow.
  • The PR touches 20+ source files for one issue. The ObjectTracker / ObjectGraphDiscoverer changes could have been a separate, independently reviewable PR.

Overall this is a careful, well-tested fix. I'd want items 1 and 2 settled before merge. Items 3 and 4 are maintainability risks that I'd fix now or track as a follow-up issue.

…njected properties (#7205)

The temporary instance that supplies instance method rows injected its
properties against bare events that nothing raised, so a dependency
injection scope created there was never disposed, and the service it owns
is no longer disposed by the object tracker. Its cleanup now runs at
session end, as for rows read during discovery. Reflection generic-type
discovery instances get the same deferral.

Also documents that OnDispose handlers subscribed for data no test owns
receive a null TestContext.

Pushed b1a2ba2: one review fix on 3336621.

Codex P2 on 3336621 (Retain scope cleanup from temporary-instance property injection): valid. Fixed and resolved. The temporary instance that supplies instance method rows injected its properties against events that nothing raised. Its scope's cleanup now moves to the session's deferred cleanup. Reflection generic-type discovery instances had the same pre-existing leak, and they now get the same deferral.

Claude review (comment 6569591414, on 3336621)

  1. Null TestContext for test-less handlers: documented, as the review suggests when a real context is not feasible. No test exists for those handlers, so a placeholder TestContext would be a fake test that handlers could mistake for a real one. ITestEvents.OnDispose now lists every case where no test owns the data (static property, a class row no test takes, discovery inference rows, the method-data-source instance) and says those handlers receive a null TestContext.
  2. OnDispose timing: already settled, as in comments 6565818673, 6568317306 and 6568726710. The PR description lists the behavior change, and the release notes come from it. ITestEvents.OnDispose and docs/docs/migration/testcontext-interface-organization.md describe the new timing. Not adding a per-attempt event: no caller needs one, and it would add public API. No change.
  3. Process-wide ownership mark: the model was dispositioned in comments 6567458611 and 6568726710, and the race is covered by ExternallyOwnedSingletonTests. The per-owner design is tracked as a follow-up in Replace the process-wide externally-owned mark in ObjectTracker with per-owner tracking #7378.
  4. TestBuilder ownership state machine: ReleaseUnclaimedAsync in the class row's finally already turns a missed hand-off into late disposal rather than a leak. The single row-owner refactor is tracked in Give each TestBuilder row one cleanup owner instead of hand-threaded event ownership #7379, after TestBuilder.BuildTestsStreamingAsync is unused and duplicates the row-building loop #7327 removes the duplicate streaming builder.
  5. Smaller points: the TakeOrFetchAsync throw is deliberate (comment 6565818673). The two session-cleanup sites are idempotent through TakeDeferredDiscoveryOnDispose, and the coordinator's site is the one that runs when no test executes. The split of the tracker changes was answered in comment 6568317306 (the pieces depend on each other). No change.

Validation on b1a2ba2 (net10.0, Release):

  • Bugs._7205: 25 tests (15 passed, 7 intentional failures, 3 not executed) in source-generated and reflection modes. The new TemporaryInstancePropertyScopeTests passes in both. Session-end disposal is not observable from inside the session, so the new DeferredDiscoveryCleanupTests case covers the move of the callbacks.
  • TUnit.UnitTests DeferredDiscoveryCleanupTests: 3 of 3 pass.
  • Issue7205Tests counts were updated to 25/15/7/3. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally (repository rule); CI covers it.

Review of #7328 (DI scope disposal, #7205)

I read the PR description, the file list, TestOnDisposeRaiser, the TestCoordinator change, and the AbstractExecutableTest and AsyncEvent additions. I did not trace every file in the diff line by line. I didn't build the PR or run any tests. The findings below come from reading the code only.

What looks good

  • The root cause is right: events subscribed on TestBuilderContext.Current were lost because the test-specific context started with empty events. ShareEventsWith mirrors the existing ShareStateBagWith and is lazy, so it adds no allocation unless something subscribes.
  • Raising OnDispose once per test fixes the retry case, where a scope used to be disposed between attempts. TryClaimOnDispose, an Interlocked.Exchange, makes the raise idempotent across the coordinator and the scheduler skip and cancel paths.
  • Skipped, cancelled, filtered-out and failed-to-build tests, and static-property scopes, are now disposed. TestOnDisposeRaiser handles those cases in one place.
  • MarkExternallyOwned stops the object tracker from disposing the scope's services a second time.
  • Test coverage is broad: unit tests for AsyncEvent detach, partition cleanup, externally owned singletons and static property scopes, plus an Engine integration test.

Concerns and suggestions

  1. Behavior change for existing OnDispose users. Handlers used to run once per attempt, before the instance was disposed. They now run once per test, after the instance is disposed. That is the documented meaning and it is called out in the PR description. Still, it is observable. Please add a release-note or migration entry, not only the ITestEvents doc line, so hook authors who release per-attempt resources in OnDispose are warned.
  2. Several overlapping ownership paths. Disposal now runs through the per-test raise, the session-level RaiseForSessionAsync, the deferred DeferToSessionEnd and RaiseDeferredForSessionAsync, RaiseDetachedAsync, and UnclaimedClassRow events handoff. Each is justified, but the invariant is hard to see: every subscribed OnDispose is raised exactly once by exactly one owner. A short ownership table in TestOnDisposeRaiser would help. It would list who owns the events at each stage (class-row fetch, test, deferred session, global static) and which method raises them. It would also help future maintainers avoid a double or missed dispose.
  3. Sender and argument inconsistency. The per-test raise calls handlers with (test.Context, test.Context). The detached and session raises pass null! as the event argument. Handlers that dereference the TestContext argument will throw an NRE on the session path, and the exception is swallowed into a log or exception list. This is documented in the XML docs. Consider documenting it on OnDispose itself, or guarding it in DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute's handler.
  4. Per-test raise cost. RaiseOnceAsync checks InternalEventsIfCreated?.OnDispose first and only then claims, so the common no-handler path stays cheap. That is good for the hot path. The TryClaimOnDispose int field adds 4 bytes per test, which is acceptable.
  5. Both discovery modes. AGENTS.md requires identical behavior in the source-generated and reflection modes. The PR touches ReflectionInstanceFactory, ReflectionTestDataCollector and TestBuilder. Please confirm that the Issue7205 tests run in both modes in CI. The description says both are covered.

No blocking issues found from this reading. I'd approve once CI is green and the behavior change has a visible release note.

Closing without merging: this PR is over the rework budget. It has had 20 automated review rounds, and the latest review (Codex on b1a2ba27d2) still has a blocking finding. The branch issue-7205-di-scope-dispose is kept for reuse.

Open blocking finding

Files reworked most often: src/TUnit.Engine/Building/TestBuilder.cs (the class-row events and lending plumbing) and TestOnDisposeRaiser.cs. There were no merge conflicts. The churn came from review rounds that each found another path where events could be lost or double-raised.

Split (native sub-issues of #7205):

Follow-ups filed from this PR remain open: #7327, #7338, #7356, #7373, #7375, #7376.
