fix(generic): class [Arguments] row that infers no type argument lets method rows infer it - #7337
A generic test class can have a class-level [Arguments] row whose values go only to constructor parameters that don't use a class type parameter, for example [Arguments(42)] on C<T>(int number). That row now supplies no class type argument, and both modes treat it the same way:
Such rows no longer count as supplying class type arguments, so an [Arguments(null)] method row still infers object.
Such rows join every method-row-inferred instantiation as its class rows, which replaces the NoClassRowForMethodRowMessage throw.
Constraint-violation reporting is unchanged.
Reflection (ReflectionTestDataCollector): adds SplitTypeFreeClassRows/ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments, which mirror the generator.
Such rows are taken out of class-row type grouping.
When nothing else supplies class type arguments, they let [Arguments(null)] infer object.
They become the class data sources of the instantiations that method rows infer, beside the rows of any other class data source (allClassRows), and those instantiations also run the method sources that infer no type, as in the generator.
AddTypeFreeClassRowsToGroups puts them ahead of the sources of every class-row group that no class [Arguments] row inferred, so a class [MethodDataSource] that infers the same type no longer replaces them.
Tests:
TestProject Bugs/_7209, covering a row that infers no type argument, a row that does infer T (control), a type-free row beside a class [MethodDataSource] (TypeFreeClassRowBesideOtherSource), and a method [MethodDataSource] that infers no type (TypeFreeClassRowWithUninferredMethodSource). Without the reflection fix, reflection ran 1 test for each of the last two, not 2.
TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests (net10.0): 215 of 217 passed and 1 was skipped. The one failure was the new Tests7209 snapshot, which I reviewed and committed as .verified.txt.
TUnit.Engine.Tests (net10.0), filters Issue71*, Issue72*, Generic*: 0 failed. The source-generated and reflection modes passed. The AOT and single-file modes are skipped locally and only run in CI.
TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), after the review fixes: 0 failed in source-generated mode (6419 total) and 0 failed in reflection mode (6416 total).
After the review fixes, TUnit.Engine.Tests (net10.0) filters Issue7209Tests, Issue71*, Issue72*, and Generic* had 0 failures, and the Tests7209 snapshot was updated for the two new classes.
After the rebase onto fix(sourcegen): split untyped class data source rows by the generic class type they infer #7339, in 9d27913: the generator's class-row helpers (ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments and the class-row type inference) pick the constructor with the new GetClassRowConstructor, the first public instance constructor by DeclaredAccessibility, which matches reflection's GetConstructors(). Before this change the generator skipped a C# primary constructor (TypeFreeClassRowPrimaryConstructorBesideTypedConstructor ran only C<int> in source-generated mode). In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), source-generated mode had 6453 passed and 0 failed, and reflection mode had 6450 passed and 0 failed. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests: 216 passed, 1 skipped, after reviewing the Tests7209 snapshot.
After the Codex P1 fix in 3328846: when only type-free class rows are present, reflection now infers the class instantiation from a typed source on a generic method whose type arguments cover the class and method type parameters ([ClassDataSource<int, long>] Run<U>(T, U) gives C<int>.Run<long>, as in the source generator). Before, reflection ran 0 tests for TypeFreeClassRowWithCombinedTypedSource. In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), each mode had 6499 succeeded and 0 failed of 6521. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests: 217 passed, 1 skipped, after reviewing the additive Tests7209 snapshot change. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally (AGENTS.md); Issue7209Tests gains the new class and runs in CI. Follow-up: Generic class rows: test edge cases of the 'row supplies no class type argument' rule in both modes #7387.
Corrected generic test type inference when class-level argument rows provide constructor values but don’t determine the class type. Method data rows can now infer types and run with the appropriate constructor arguments, including cases involving null values and multiple data sources.
Improved consistency in constructor selection and handling of generic constraints when discovering these tests.
After the Codex and Greptile fixes in 65bf56f: reflection now infers class type arguments from a typed method data source beside a type-free class row (TypeFreeClassRowWithTypedMethodSource), and its method-row constraint check uses discovery's type mapping, so a T[] row that breaks the constraints fails instead of disappearing (TypeFreeClassRowArrayConstraintViolation). Before these fixes, reflection ran 0 tests for the first class and 1 for the second, against 1 and 2 in source-generated mode. In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), source-generated mode passed 6418 and failed 0, and reflection mode passed 6415 and failed 0. Both new classes give the same results in both modes. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests (net10.0): 216 passed, 1 skipped, 0 failed. I reviewed the Tests7209 snapshot update, which only adds the two new classes. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally; CI covers it.
After the Codex fixes in eb21921: beside only type-free class rows, typed and method data sources in reflection now infer instantiations without being scoped to them, as in the generator. TypeFreeClassRowWithInferringRowAndTypedSource runs 3 tests in both modes (reflection ran 2 before), and TypeFreeClassRowWithTwoInferringMethodSources runs 4 in both modes (reflection ran 2 before). In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), source-generated mode passed 6427 and failed 0, and reflection mode passed 6424 and failed 0. I reviewed the Tests7209 snapshot update, which only adds the two new classes.
In both modes, a class row binds to the constructor marked [TestConstructor] when there is one (GetClassRowConstructor). TypeFreeClassRowTestConstructorTakesTypeParameter now infers C<int>; both modes inferred C<object> before.
Reflection lets typed and method data sources infer instantiations beside a type-free class row even when [GenerateGenericTest] lists other types. TypeFreeClassRowWithGenerateGenericTestAndTypedSource and ...AndMethodSource run 2 tests in both modes; reflection ran only C<long> for the typed source before.
In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), 6497 passed, 22 skipped and 0 failed in each mode. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests (net10.0): 216 passed and 1 skipped; the only failure was the Tests7209 snapshot, whose update only adds the three new classes and which I reviewed. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally; CI covers it.
After the Codex fix in 6ec926b: beside a type-free class row, reflection lets a typed data source infer the class type arguments even when no method parameter uses them, as the generator's InferTypesFromDataSourceAttribute does. TypeFreeClassRowWithTypedSourceAndNonGenericParameter ([ClassDataSource<int>] Run(int value)) runs 1 test in both modes; reflection ran 0 before. This commit also brings the Tests7209 snapshot up to date. In TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass] (net10.0), each mode ran 6520 tests with 0 failed. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests (net10.0): 216 passed, 1 skipped. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally; CI covers it.

Walkthrough
Source generation and reflection discovery now distinguish class argument rows that supply constructor values from rows that infer class type arguments. Method rows and typed sources can infer class types when class rows do not. Regression tests cover generated metadata and execution in both test modes.

Summary
Class row classification and constructor selection src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs
Both discovery paths identify class argument rows that bind only to constructor parameters without class type parameters. Constructor selection for class-row inference follows the same preference: a public [TestConstructor], then a public instance constructor, then an instance constructor.
Instantiation inference and row pairing src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations.cs
Reflection discovery infers class types from method rows and typed sources, associates inferred instantiations with applicable sources, and pairs eligible type-free class rows with instantiations. Constraint reporting accounts for whether class type arguments were supplied.
Regression coverage across test modes tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7209/ClassRowInfersNoTypeArgumentTests.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/Bugs/7209/Tests7209.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/Tests7209.Test.verified.txt, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7209Tests.cs
Tests cover method-row and source inference, constructor selection, empty sources, generated generic tests, and constraint violations. Engine tests assert test counts and outcomes in both modes. The generated-source snapshot records the corresponding test metadata.
The previously reported disappearing constraint-violation row is addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The active direct issue is #7209. The generator and reflection collector now treat class rows that bind only to non-generic constructor parameters as type-free. Method rows and data sources can infer T, including object for null values, while the class row supplies constructor values. The added dual-mode fixtures and Issue7209Tests cover these cases, including typed sources, method sources, constraints, and constructor selection. The supplied validation reports zero failures in the relevant modes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to #7209. Production changes implement generic class-row inference and row pairing in source-generated and reflection discovery. The added fixtures, engine tests, and generator snapshot test this behavior. Issue #7361 is closed and provides context only; its related constructor-alignment changes do not establish unrelated scope. No unrelated production feature is identified in the supplied change summary.

A rabbit checks each class row twice, To see which values name a type. Method rows help infer the class, While constructor values stay in place. Tests follow each generated path, Then hop through reflection’s aftermath.
I read the diff and did not build it or run the tests. I found no blocking issues. Both modes now agree: a class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters that don't use a class type parameter supplies no class type argument. Method rows infer T, and those instances are built from the class row.
Points to consider (non-blocking):
Duplicated rule across two projects.ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments exists once in TestMetadataGenerator (Roslyn symbols) and once in ReflectionTestDataCollector (reflection). They can't be shared directly, but they can drift apart. A small paired test that exercises edge cases in both modes would catch that. Useful cases are a row with more values than constructor parameters, a mix of type-free and type-supplying rows, and ArgumentsAttribute<T>.
Constructor choice differs. The generator prefers a constructor with a public syntax declaration and falls back to the first one. The reflection side uses GetConstructors()[0], whose order isn't guaranteed. With several public constructors the two modes could disagree. Selecting the constructor deterministically on the reflection side, for example by parameter count, would match the generator better.
Mixed rows. When type-free rows sit beside type-supplying class rows, the type-free rows are only attached to instantiations that the method rows infer. The allClassRows condition in reflection (typeFreeClassRows == null && ...) is subtle. A brief comment or a test for the mixed case would make the intended behavior explicit.
The added tests cover both modes, and the verified snapshots show C<int> and C<object> each getting ArgumentsAttribute(42) as the class row. That matches the PR description.
The PR lets method data infer generic class types when class-level [Arguments] rows supply only constructor values.
Generic test rows can infer the class type beside constructor-only class rows.

I read the diff but did not build the PR or run its tests. I found no blocking issues. The fix is coherent: a class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without a class type parameter no longer counts as supplying class type arguments. In both modes it instead supplies the constructor arguments for every instantiation the method rows infer. Before the change, source-generated mode threw and reflection mode over-inferred T. The [Arguments(null)] → object behaviour from #7141 is preserved.
Nits and non-blocking suggestions:
Constructor selection differs between the modes. The generator prefers a constructor declared public in syntax, then falls back to the first constructor. Reflection takes the first of GetConstructors(). With several public constructors, the two could disagree on whether a row is 'type-free'. A shared test with an overloaded constructor would pin this down, and so would a comment saying which constructor is intended.
The 'mirrored logic' is duplicated by hand. The generator and reflection each carry a hand-written copy of ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments, and the two are linked only by comments. The tests cover only the single-constructor case, so the engine-parity tests would be the safety net if the copies drift. Extending those tests, for example with a mixed type-free and type-bearing row, would make that net stronger.
nullArgumentsArrayInfersObject in the generator is a long inline LINQ expression. Extracting it into a named helper would make it easier to read and keep in sync with the reflection-side nullValuesArrayInfersObject argument.
The new bug test, the engine tests in both modes, and the snapshot are appropriate. Please make sure no .received.txt files are committed.
Dispositions for the non-blocking points in the Claude reviews, as of be8eba5:
Parity coverage for the duplicated rule and the mixed rows. Done. Two new TestProject classes are covered by Issue7209Tests rows in both modes: a type-free row beside a class [MethodDataSource], and a method source that infers no type. These cases exposed the two reflection gaps that Codex and Greptile reported. Both are fixed in this head, and AddTypeFreeClassRowsToGroups and the comment at the split document the mixed-row rule.
Constructor choice (GetConstructors()[0] vs. the generator's first public constructor). No change. GetConstructors() returns only public constructors, in metadata (declaration) order on the runtimes TUnit supports. The generator picks the first constructor declared public, so both choose the same constructor. The rule is also the existing one that class-row type inference already uses in both modes, so this PR doesn't change it.
Extracting nullArgumentsArrayInfersObject's inline LINQ. No change. It's a style nit, and the expression sits beside classTypeArgumentsSupplied, which it mirrors.
I read the diff for the source generator and reflection changes. I didn't build the PR or run any tests.
What it does: a class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters that don't use a class type parameter (for example [Arguments(42)] on C<T>(int number)) no longer counts as supplying class type arguments. The method rows infer T instead, and the type-free row only supplies the constructor arguments. Both modes now apply the same rule. That fixes the divergence in the description: the generator threw, and reflection produced three tests.
Positives
The generator and reflection logic are explicitly mirrored and cross-referenced in comments, which is what the AGENTS.md dual-mode rule asks for.
There is a snapshot test plus a content assertion that <object> and <int> are both emitted.
Existing behaviour is untouched when there are no type-free rows. SplitTypeFreeClassRows returns null and allocates nothing in that case.
Suggestions and concerns
Constructor selection differs between the two implementations. The generator prefers a public constructor declared in syntax and falls back to the first constructor. Reflection takes GetConstructors()[0], which is the first public instance constructor, and its order is not guaranteed. A class with several constructors could be classified differently in each mode. Please share one rule, for example 'the constructor the engine actually binds', and add a test with two constructors.
The classification is duplicated across two code paths.nullArgumentsArrayInfersObject in the generator is a separate attribute scan from the existing classTypeArgumentsSupplied. Computing both from one pass over the class attributes would keep them from drifting apart.
Mixed rows are untested. The cases I'd want covered are a type-free row beside a type-bearing row ([Arguments(42)] plus [Arguments(1, 2)] where the second binds T), a type-free row beside a [MethodDataSource] class source, and a row that binds only some values to T. AddTypeFreeClassRowsToGroups and the RowCount adjustment look correct, but the tests don't exercise them.
Partially bound rows.boundCount = Math.Min(valueCount, parameters.Length) ignores extra values and any parameters left unbound. A row that supplies fewer values than the constructor has parameters is treated as type-free even if a later, unbound parameter uses T. This is probably fine, because that row would fail anyway, but a comment saying so would help.
Reflection AOT.genericTypeDefinition.GetConstructors() on a generic type definition in the discovery path needs the same trimming annotations as the surrounding reflection calls. The reflection path is annotated already, so I expect this is fine. Please confirm it with an AOT publish run if you haven't.
Overall the design is sound and this is a reasonable fix. I'd address #1 before merging and add the mixed-row tests from #3.
No earlier review comments from humans needed addressing. The only existing comment is CodeRabbit's note that it skipped the draft PR.
Dispositions for the Claude review of be8eba5 (comment 6562565650). That run started at the push, before the earlier dispositions were posted, so it didn't see them.
Constructor selection. No change, for the reason given earlier. Both helpers pick the first public constructor. The generator picks the first declared public constructor, and reflection uses GetConstructors(), which returns only public constructors in declaration order. They diverge only for a class whose declared constructors are all non-public, and such a class can't be instantiated as a test in either mode. This rule already exists on main and drives class-row type inference in both modes (ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:824, TestMetadataGenerator.cs:6828). Moving both modes to a different rule would be a separate change.
One pass for nullArgumentsArrayInfersObject. No change. This is a style point, and it was dispositioned earlier.
Mixed rows.
Type-free row beside a class [MethodDataSource]: covered by TypeFreeClassRowBesideOtherSource.
Type-free row beside a type-bearing class row: I checked it locally with [Arguments(42)] [Arguments(43, "s")] on C<T>(int number, T? value = default).
On main, the modes disagree. The source generator runs 1 test (C<string>, number=43). Reflection runs 2 tests and wrongly infers C<int> from the type-free row.
With this PR, reflection groups the rows as the source generator does: 1 test on C<string>, with the type-free row not added because that group already has a class [Arguments] row.
Partially bound rows. No change. A row with fewer values than constructor parameters binds only the leading parameters. If a later parameter that uses T has no value, that row can't build the instance in either mode, unless the parameter is optional, in which case its default carries no type. Both helpers use the same Math.Min rule.
AOT. No change. GetConstructors() on the generic type definition is the same call that the existing class-row inference at ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:824 makes on main, within the same annotated reflection-only discovery path. The AOT and source-generated modes don't run this code.
The change looks correct and well scoped. The generator (ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments) and reflection (SplitTypeFreeClassRows) mirror each other. The [Arguments(null)] case is handled in both: reflection's Values is [null], so it has no NRE risk. The new source-generator snapshot and the bug-test project cover both modes.
Non-blocking observations:
Constructor selection can diverge between modes. The generator prefers the first constructor with a public modifier in syntax, and falls back to the first constructor. Reflection uses GetConstructors()[0], which is public-only and in metadata order. For classes with several constructors, the two modes could classify a row differently. Both could share one rule, such as 'the constructor the data row binds to by arity', or at least a comment and a test with overloaded constructors.
The rule is duplicated. The classification, the grouping and the null-inference flag each exist as two parallel implementations. This is required by the repo's dual-mode constraint, but a combined test with overloaded constructors and mixed type-free and type-bearing class rows would help keep them in sync.
Partial binding. When valueCount is greater than the constructor's parameter count, only boundCount parameters are checked. This is fine, but a short comment would help.
Nothing blocks merging. Please confirm CI is green, including the engine tests that I did not run here.
I read the source generator and reflection changes and found nothing that blocks a merge. I did not build the PR or run any tests.
What looks right
The two modes agree on the rule. A class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without class type parameters supplies no class type argument. The method rows infer T, and the type-free rows become the class rows of each inferred instantiation.
In reflection mode, SplitTypeFreeClassRows allocates only when it finds a type-free row, and AddTypeFreeClassRowsToGroups uses record with, so groups are not mutated in place.
The generator test checks both <object> and <int> instantiations. The Engine test covers both modes.
Minor points, none blocking
Constructor selection can differ. The generator picks the first public declared constructor and otherwise the first one. Reflection uses GetConstructors()[0], which returns public instance constructors in declaration order. A class with several constructors, or only a non-public one, could classify a row differently in each mode. I'd expect a shared helper or a comment to settle this. A test with two constructors would confirm it.
params constructors.boundCount = Min(valueCount, params.Length) ignores whether the trailing parameter is a params T[]. A type-parameter array would be caught by ContainsClassTypeParameter/ContainsGenericParameters, so this is probably fine, but a short test would show it.
Duplicated logic. The same classification now lives in two places, each with a "mirrors X" comment. That is acceptable given the AOT split. Any future change has to touch both, so a test that runs the same attribute shapes through both modes would guard against drift.
Overall this is a solid, well-documented fix with good coverage.
40-55: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Add an assertion that distinguishes the 42 and 43 class-row instances.
The mixed fixture accepts either constructor value, so a run where both instances use 42 can pass. The engine test checks only counts and outcomes, so that run can also pass the engine test. Add a check that fails when the 43 instance does not run.

Review of #7337: class rows that supply no type argument
I reviewed the diff only. I did not build the PR or run any tests.
The design is sound. A class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without a class type parameter now supplies no class type argument. The method rows infer T, and the class row supplies the constructor arguments. The generator (ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments) and reflection (SplitTypeFreeClassRows) mirror each other, as the project's dual-mode rule requires. The new Tests7209 snapshot test and the Bugs/_7209 test cover both modes.
Concerns
The two modes pick the constructor differently.
The generator prefers a public constructor with a declaration in source, then falls back to the first constructor.
Reflection uses GetConstructors() is [var constructor, ..], which takes whatever GetConstructors() returns first. That order is not guaranteed to match declaration order.
A generic class with several public constructors could classify a row differently in each mode. Please add a test with two constructors, one using T and one not.
Reflection could also look for the constructor that the class row's data actually binds to, rather than the first one.
Primary-constructor detection is fragile. The generator's sr.GetSyntax() is ConstructorDeclarationSyntax check does not match a C# primary constructor, which is a ParameterList on the type declaration. So the fallback Constructors.FirstOrDefault() is probably what runs there. A comment or a primary-constructor test case would help.
Complexity.
The same rule is split across three places in reflection: SplitTypeFreeClassRows, AddTypeFreeClassRowsToGroups and the new classTypeArgumentsSupplied parameter threaded through AddMethodRowViolations.
Consider one small ClassRowAnalysis record, computed once in DiscoverGenericTests, holding TypeFreeRows, RemainingSources and TypeArgumentsSupplied. Then the call sites would stop re-deriving classDataSources.Length > 0 || generateGenericTestAttributes.Length > 0.
The same expression is currently written twice in different forms.
Mapping code is duplicated. The reflection-side InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodDataSource and MapClassGenericParameters re-implement the generator's ProcessTypeForGenerics. That is easy to let drift apart, so a shared test matrix that runs in both modes would help. Also, GetMethod with DeclaredOnly on a trimmed type needs a DynamicallyAccessedMembers annotation, or an UnconditionalSuppressMessage justification that states the trimming risk. The current justification is only "requires dynamic access", and the project requires Native AOT and trimming compatibility.
Allocations in discovery.SplitTypeFreeClassRows and allClassRowSources build new arrays and lists per generic class. That is acceptable at discovery time, but [.. typeFreeClassRows, .. allClassRows] is a further copy for each method.
Bottom line
I found no correctness bug that I could confirm from the diff. Concern 1 is the most worth fixing, because it is an observable difference between the two modes. I did not check whether the earlier Codex, CodeRabbit and Greptile threads were addressed; please make sure each has a disposition before merge, as the repo guide requires.
Dispositions for the reviews of be8eba5. Fixes are in 1f5c30c.
Codex (thread): reflection found no test for a type-free class row beside a method fed only by [MethodDataSource]. Fixed, see the thread.
CodeRabbit inline: a constraint-violating method row disappeared beside a type-free class row. Fixed in both modes, see the threads. The untyped class data source generalization is filed as #7358.
CodeRabbit nitpicks
Tell the 42 and 43 instances apart. No change, since this is a nitpick and doesn't block. Each instance is a separate test, so asserting that both values were observed needs state shared across tests. The test count (2 tests, both passing) and the per-instance assertion stay as they are.
Distinct names for the method-source rows. Done. Issue7209Tests now also checks how many distinct test names each class produces.
Constructor selection. Unchanged, as dispositioned earlier.
params constructors. No change. A params T[] parameter contains the class type parameter, so the row is not type-free in either mode (ContainsClassTypeParameter / ContainsGenericParameters). A params int[] row binds no type parameter either way.
Duplicated logic. This is inherent to the dual-mode split. The _7209 fixtures run through both modes in Issue7209Tests.
Validation (net10.0)
_7209 fixtures: 10 tests in each mode, 9 passed plus 1 expected constraint failure. On the previous head it was 9 in source-gen and 8 in reflection.
_7106, _7107, _7118, _7141, _7161 fixtures: the same counts in both modes as before.
TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests: 215 passed. The Tests7209 snapshot was updated to add the two new fixtures.
TUnit.Engine builds for all TFMs with no IL or AD warnings.
TUnit.Engine.Tests is compiled only and left to CI, per AGENTS.md.
…type-free class row even when no method parameter uses them (#7209)
The source generator's InferTypesFromDataSourceAttribute infers C<int> from ClassDataSource<int> whatever the method's parameters are, but reflection skipped methods whose parameters do not use the class's type parameters before reaching typed-source inference, so [Arguments(42)] on C<T>(int number) with [ClassDataSource<int>] Run(int value) ran no test in reflection mode. Also updates the Tests7209 snapshot, which 3e48ddd left without its new class.
Dispositions for the reviews of 3e48ddd. The fix is in 6ec926b.
Codex (thread), P1, typed source beside a method whose parameters do not use T: fixed. Reflection now lets a typed data source infer the class type arguments for such a method, as the generator does. The new TypeFreeClassRowWithTypedSourceAndNonGenericParameter class runs 1 test in both modes; reflection ran 0 before the fix. That commit also updates the Tests7209 snapshot, which 3e48ddd left without TypeFreeClassRowWithInvalidGenerateGenericTestAndTypedSource. The diff only adds the two classes and shifts line numbers.
Collapse the flags into a record. Not done in this PR. It is a readability refactor of logic that is now pinned by tests in both modes. Doing it here would add another review round to a PR that is still converging, and it changes no behaviour.
Parity matrix.Issue7209Tests.Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer already is that table. It runs every _7209 class in both the source-generated and reflection modes and asserts the same test count and distinct test names for each. It covers [GenerateGenericTest] plus a type-free row, [MethodDataSource] plus [Arguments], typed sources, and run-time class sources that yield no rows (TypeFreeClassRowBesideEmptySourceWithInferringMethodSource). This round adds one more row to it.
Surplus values and params T[]. The bound prefix is Math.Min(valueCount, parameters.Length), so with a params T[] constructor the params parameter is always in the prefix. It contains T, so the row counts as supplying type arguments. Surplus values beyond a non-params constructor's parameters cannot bind in either mode, so the row fails at construction whatever is inferred. Ignoring those values changes no outcome.
Non-public fallback. The generator's ?? InstanceConstructors.FirstOrDefault() applies only when the class has no public instance constructor. Such a test class cannot be constructed in either mode: the generated new C<T>(...) does not compile against a non-public constructor, and reflection finds none. So which constructor the generator picks there decides no instantiation that runs.
Validation on 6ec926b (net10.0). TUnit.TestProject/**[EngineTest=Pass]: 6520 total and 0 failed in each mode. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests: 216 passed and 1 skipped after I reviewed the Tests7209 snapshot. TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally; CI covers it.
I read the diff but did not build it or run the tests.
Overall: The behaviour is coherent. A class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without a class type parameter no longer counts as supplying class type arguments. The source-generated and reflection modes now follow the same rule. Both pick the row's constructor with GetClassRowConstructor, which replaces the earlier divergent lookups. Moving InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodRow into reflection discovery also removes the duplicated inference in ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations. The earlier review points appear to have been dispositioned.
Non-blocking concerns
Reflection-side complexity.DiscoverGenericTestsAsync now threads many interdependent flags and counts: typeFreeClassRows, classTypeArgumentsSupplied, methodSourcesInferClassTypeArguments, typeFreeRowsInferNone, and violation-count deltas. Together they make the "who supplies class type arguments" decision hard to follow. A small immutable record such as ClassTypeArgumentSupply, computed once and passed down, would be easier to reason about and to keep in step with the generator. The ClassViolationCount delta comparison is especially fragile, because it relies on call ordering.
Duplicated rule across two projects.ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments exists in both the generator and the engine, mirrored by hand. That is unavoidable given the constraints, but the parity tests carry the whole burden of keeping them aligned. Keep those Issue7209Tests rows covering the mixed-row and [TestConstructor] cases.
AOT/trimming. Confirm that the new GetConstructors() calls in the engine carry the same DynamicallyAccessedMembers/UnconditionalSuppressMessage annotations as the code they replace.
Hot path.SplitTypeFreeClassRows and GetClassRowConstructor run per generic type definition. That is fine now, but cache the constructor lookup if the call count grows.
No blocking issues found. Rely on CI for the generator snapshot tests and the Engine tests.
Dispositions for the Claude review of 6ec926b (comment). It found no blocking issues. None of its points needs a change in this PR:
Reflection-side complexity: a maintainability suggestion, not a defect. Folding the flags into a ClassTypeArgumentSupply record would rework code that ten review rounds have already checked. It is not worth reopening that at this point. Left as is.
Rule duplicated across the generator and the engine: expected, since the two modes collect metadata separately (see AGENTS.md). Issue7209Tests and Tests7209 cover the mixed-row and [TestConstructor] cases in both modes.
AOT/trimming:GetClassRowConstructor calls GetConstructors() inside ReflectionTestDataCollector. That class's [UnconditionalSuppressMessage("Trimming", "IL2070", ...)] covers this call, the same as the existing reflection-mode lookups. Reflection mode is not used under AOT.
Hot path: the lookup runs once for each generic type definition during discovery, which is not a per-test cost. I'll add a cache if profiling shows this lookup costs time.
I read the source-generator and reflection changes and did not build or run the tests.
What looks good
The generator and reflection paths use the same rule: a class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without class type parameters supplies no class type argument.
GetClassRowConstructor now matches reflection's constructor choice, so a [TestConstructor] constructor and a public constructor in declaration order are picked the same way in both modes. This replaces the generator's earlier syntax-based ConstructorDeclarationSyntax lookup, which could not see a primary constructor.
Replacing ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations.InferClassTypeArguments with ReflectionTestDataCollector.InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodRow removes a second copy of the type mapping. Violation reporting and discovery can no longer drift apart.
ClassViolationCount is a small way to tell [GenerateGenericTest] violations from class-row violations.
Concerns
The reflection path is hard to follow.DiscoverGenericTestsAsync now threads typeFreeClassRows, allClassRows, classDataSourceCount, classRowGroups, methodSourceInstantiations, generateGenericTestViolationCount and a multi-clause methodSourcesInferClassTypeArguments expression. The last one depends on classRowGroups.Count == 0 and on a violation-count comparison.
A small ClassTypeArgumentSources record would be easier to follow and to test than these locals. It would hold "which sources supplied class type arguments" (GenerateGenericTest, class Arguments rows, run-time sources that produced groups, violations) and expose one MethodRowsInferTypes property.
The generator computes classTypeArgumentsSupplied as a single boolean. Matching that shape in reflection mode would make the two paths easier to compare, which AGENTS.md requires.
Edge cases in ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments. It judges only the bound prefix of parameters (Math.Min(valueCount, parameters.Length)). Please confirm tests cover these cases, and that both modes agree on each:
a row with fewer values than parameters, where the later parameters use T or have default values;
a params constructor parameter;
a generic ArgumentsAttribute<T> row;
a mixed set of type-free and type-bearing rows on the same class.
Name check.attributeClass.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute" matches by simple name, so a user-defined attribute with that name would be treated as the built-in one. Compare the containing namespace as well, or use the existing IsOrInherits helper.
Allocations in the generator.typeFreeClassRows ?? [] inside the loop over rowInstantiations is cheap, but classArgumentsAttributes is re-scanned on every call. Hoisting the ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments results into a small cache per class would avoid repeating the work.
Snapshot tests. Please confirm the generator snapshot (.verified.txt) changes are intentional and that the tests/TUnit.PublicAPI snapshots are unaffected.
I found no correctness bug that I could confirm from reading the diff. The behaviour change (C<int>.Run(1) and C<object>.Run(null), 2 tests in both modes) is sensible. My main request is to simplify the reflection-side bookkeeping, and to confirm the edge cases in item 2 have tests.
…neric method beside type-free class rows (#7209)
A typed data source whose type arguments cover the class and method type
parameters (ClassDataSource<int, long> on Run<U>(T, U)) lost its only
discovery path once the type-free class row was split out, so reflection
ran no test while source-gen ran C<int>.Run<long>. Infer the class
instantiation from the source's leading type arguments, as the generator's
combined branch of InferTypesFromDataSourceAttribute does.
Dispositions for the Claude review of 6ec926b posted after the PR was marked ready (comment). It reported no confirmed bug. The Codex P1 from the same head is fixed in 3328846 (see its thread).
Edge cases of ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments: both modes apply the same rule. Each checks only the bound prefix, Math.Min(valueCount, parameters.Length), picks the constructor with GetClassRowConstructor, and counts ArgumentsAttribute<T> as one value. The cases you listed (fewer values than parameters, params, Arguments<T>, mixed type-free and type-bearing rows) have no tests yet. I filed Generic class rows: test edge cases of the 'row supplies no class type argument' rule in both modes #7387 to add them in both modes rather than grow this PR further.
Generator allocations: the scan runs once per generic class at compile time and is not on a runtime path. Left as is.
Snapshots: the Tests7209 changes are intentional. 3328846 adds only the new TypeFreeClassRowWithCombinedTypedSource class. This PR changes no public API: ReflectionTestDataCollector and the generator helpers are internal.
I read the diff and the earlier review threads. I did not build the PR or run its tests.
What looks right
Both modes use the same rule: a class-level [Arguments] row whose values bind only to constructor parameters without a class type parameter supplies no class type argument. This follows the AGENTS.md dual-mode constraint. Method rows infer T (C<int>, C<object> for [Arguments(null)]), and each instance is built from the class row.
GetClassRowConstructor now picks the same constructor in the generator and in reflection. That fixes a real mismatch, since the old generator code relied on syntax references.
ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations now reuses InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodRow instead of its own copy. This removes a duplicate of the inference logic. ClassViolationCount and classTypeArgumentsSupplied make the cases explicit.
The test coverage is good: the _7209 TestProject classes, Issue7209Tests in both modes, and the Tests7209 snapshot. The earlier Codex and Claude findings have dispositions and fixes in later commits.
Design concern (non-blocking) DiscoverGenericTestsAsync now has several interacting flags: typeFreeClassRows, allClassRows, methodSourcesInferClassTypeArguments, classTypeArgumentsSupplied and generateGenericTestViolationCount. They are hard to reason about and easy to break in the next change. Consider a small ClassTypeArgumentSources record that is computed once and answers "who supplies class type arguments?". The generator and reflection could then share its definition, with one parity test table. This would be a follow-up and not a reason to hold the PR. The rule is currently duplicated in two places and kept in sync only by comments and tests.
I'm closing this PR without merging under the issue-pr-loop rework budget. It has had 20 automated review rounds, and the latest review, Codex on 3328846, still has a blocking finding. Each fix in reflection mode has exposed another data-source combination.
Open blocking finding
Codex P1 (thread): when combined typed sources have different method type arguments, reflection deduplicates them by class types alone, so C<int>.Run<short> is lost.
Files that kept changing:ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs (DiscoverGenericTestsAsync), ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations.cs, _7209/ClassRowInfersNoTypeArgumentTests.cs, and the Tests7209 snapshot. There were no merge conflicts.
The branch issue-7209-generic-class-row-no-type-arg stays, and each sub-issue lists the commits it can reuse. #7361 is already closed. #7371 and #7387 remain the follow-ups.

Declared method types are lost
The new branch keeps the class types but discards the declared method types. For [Arguments(42)] on C<T>(int number), a [ClassDataSource<int, long>] on Run<U>(T value, long other) should run C<int>.Run<long>. Instead, reflection leaves the method open and tries to infer U from its values. Since no parameter uses U, the test fails during discovery.
Preserve the trailing method types and close the method before building its metadata.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
A second source disappears
Different method types collapse into one entry when their class types match. Beside [Arguments(42)] on C<T>(int number), give Run<U>(T value, U other) both [ClassDataSource<int, long>] and [ClassDataSource<int, double>]. Both calls here pass only [int] to AddSourceInstantiation, which keeps the first source index. The builder then selects only that source, so reflection silently omits the second test.
Keep both method combinations and their sources when grouping these entries.

Summary
A generic test class can have a class-level
[Arguments]row whose values go only to constructor parameters that don't use a class type parameter, for example[Arguments(42)]onC<T>(int number). That row now supplies no class type argument, and both modes treat it the same way:T, just as they do without a class row:C<int>for[Arguments(1)], andC<object>for[Arguments(null)](Untyped [Arguments(null)] method row on a generic class silently produces no test #7141).number = 42).Before (on

Summary by CodeRabbit
After the Codex and Greptile fixes in 65bf56f: reflection now infers class type arguments from a typed method data source beside a type-free class row (
TypeFreeClassRowWithTypedMethodSource), and its method-row constraint check uses discovery's type mapping, so aT[]row that breaks the constraints fails instead of disappearing (TypeFreeClassRowArrayConstraintViolation).
