Generic row inference and static property initialization could treat unrelated attributes named ArgumentsAttribute or MethodDataSourceAttribute as built-in TUnit sources. Classify these attributes through shared namespace and containing-type checks without allocating display strings in the affected loops.
Preserve inference for derived method sources only when constructors provably forward built-in arguments unchanged, including literal SkipIfEmpty and DeferEnumeration configuration. Unknown mappings, source/row mutations, replaced row providers, calls, and custom or hidden named setters retain the runtime path. Derived instance and static sources preserve explicit generic method types, matching reflection discovery. Both discovery modes retain their rows when another source has already created the explicit instantiation.
Initialize static properties with derived method sources through IDataSourceAttribute, preserving existing supported source families and direct-interface fallback behavior. Add lookalike, forwarding, configured/remapped constructor, replaced-row-provider, named-setter, explicit-type and deferred-row regressions. The separate open-generic runtime fallback bug remains tracked in #7654; metadata snapshots cover class inference and the remapped runtime fixture uses an external source to isolate it.
New deferred-row runtime regression: 2 passed generated, 2 passed reflection. Before the fix both modes ran only one row and failed the expected-count hook; the snapshot now adds only the missing derived source to the explicit string entry.
Existing affected runtime class: 7 passed generated, 7 passed reflection, using separate class-filter runs.
Earlier validation of the remaining changes: full unit suite 931 passed, 3 skipped; static cleanup suite 26 passed; constructor/named-setter boundaries and snapshots reproduce the prior failures.

The source generators now classify built-in argument and method-source attributes using symbol identity and inheritance checks. Method-source inference checks whether constructor arguments can be read. Regression tests cover lookalike attributes, derived sources, generated metadata, and static-property initialization.

Explanation
Issue #7650 asks that built-in data-source classification use qualified identity, so lookalike attributes are ignored. The reviewed head meets this in the paths that the issue names. DataSourceAttributeHelper.IsBuiltIn checks the symbol name, a null ContainingType, and the TUnit.Core namespace under the global namespace. It does not allocate display strings. IsArguments, IsMethodSource, and IsOrInheritsBuiltIn reuse this check. StaticPropertyInitializationGenerator.ToPropertyWithDataSourceModel uses these predicates for ArgumentsAttribute, built-in MethodDataSourceAttribute, method sources, and async generator bases. Fallback and direct IDataSourceAttribute behavior stays unchanged. The PR summary says TestMetadataGenerator now uses the same helpers for argument rows, method-source inference, and class-row handling. The obsolete local classification helper is removed. CanReadMethodSourceArguments keeps derived method-source inference only when the constructor forwards arguments unchanged. Literal SkipIfEmpty and DeferEnumeration writes are allowed. Named custom setters, replaced GetDataRowsAsync implementations, and unproven shapes return to the runtime path. Explicit generic method types are preserved for derived instance and static sources, and ReflectionTestDataCollector now matches this behavior. Regression fixtures and verified snapshots cover lookalike argument and method attributes, remapped and configured constructors, named setters, explicit and implicit row-provider replacements, explicit types, deferred rows, and static properties. The reported net10.0 generator and runtime results support these paths. I verified the code paths by reading the helper and the static-property generator. I did not re-run the tests. The issue's non-coding items (manual validation and CI delegation) do not apply. The separate open-generic runtime fallback bug remains in #7654, which this PR does not need to fix.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files map to the requirements in #7650 and the PR objectives. DataSourceAttributeHelper holds the shared identity, inheritance, and constructor-forwarding predicates. StaticPropertyInitializationGenerator and TestMetadataGenerator call these predicates. ReflectionTestDataCollector extends the existing instance-source generic-inference path to derived MethodDataSourceAttribute types. The PR summary states that this change matches generated discovery for explicit generic types. That is a direct part of the stated objective, not an unrelated Engine change. The generator snapshots, lookalike fixtures, and runtime tests support the classification and forwarding changes. Test-only fixtures such as LookalikeClassMethodSources.cs.txt and DerivedSourceDeferredRowsTests.cs support these requirements. The PR summary reports no public API changes and no runtime reflection implementation changes beyond the discovery alignment. The generic-class runtime fallback is tracked in #7654 and is not included here. Existing AOT and trim warnings are tracked in #7493 and #7452 and are not changed by this PR.

A rabbit checks each source by name, And keeps lookalikes out of the game. Derived rows join when checks succeed, Generated entries follow the lead. Static props take rows they find, While typed tests keep their types aligned.
Looks good. The change replaces simple-name checks (AttributeClass.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute" and similar) with a shared DataSourceAttributeHelper.IsBuiltIn/IsArguments/IsMethodSource. These compare the containing namespace chain and the absence of a containing type, so they allocate no display strings.
A grep of src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator in the PR head finds no remaining name-only checks for these three attributes.
Generic forms (ArgumentsAttribute<T>, MethodDataSourceAttribute<T>) still match, because Name is the same for generic types. The IsGenericType: false restriction at the own-class method-source site is kept.
The rewritten condition at that site is null-safe. A null AttributeClass makes !IsBuiltIn true, so it short-circuits before the ! dereference.
The switch to if/else if keeps the independent-bucket behaviour, since the IsDataSourceAttribute check after it is still separate.
The stray ;; in the static-property generator is cleaned up.
The lookalike snapshot and runtime fixtures cover both class and method rows and static properties, and the description says they fail without the fix.
Two optional nits:
A small IsMethodSource-style helper for MethodDataSourceAttribute alone would replace the two inline IsBuiltIn(..., "MethodDataSourceAttribute") calls and the string literals.
Hoisting the name strings into constants would prevent typos.
Neither blocks the merge. I did not build or run the tests; the description reports the generator suite and targeted runtime fixtures passing in both modes.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the missing derived-source rows are now preserved.
Summary
The PR distinguishes built-in data sources from unrelated attributes with matching names and keeps custom source behavior when constructor arguments cannot be trusted.
Generic tests use only real source attributes to pick their row types.
Static properties can use derived method-source attributes.
Both Claude and Codex returned positive verdicts for ac62d51; all review surfaces have been checked and no review threads exist. Claude’s optional helper/constant suggestions are dispositioned as non-blocking: the existing shared helper already centralizes identity checking, and the explicit attribute names keep the narrower call sites clear. Keeping the reviewed implementation unchanged. Marking ready to start CI and the ready-for-review Claude run.
The change does what it says. It replaces name-only checks (AttributeClass?.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute" and similar) with a shared DataSourceAttributeHelper.IsBuiltIn, IsArguments and IsMethodSource family. These compare the symbol name, a null ContainingType, and the TUnit.Core namespace chain. That fixes lookalike attributes being treated as built-in sources (#7650). I read the diff but did not build it or run any tests.
Coverage: I grepped src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator for remaining name-only comparisons against these three attribute names and found none.
Allocations: The namespace-chain comparison avoids display-string allocations, as the project guidance asks.
Generic forms: Comparing Name still matches the generic variants of these attributes, which share the simple name. That matches the old behavior.
Tests: Snapshot and runtime fixtures cover the class-level and method-level lookalike cases and the static property generator. The PR reports that the new snapshots fail on the old generators and pass with the fix, and that the reflection path already behaved correctly.
Minor: The GetOwnClassMethodDataSourcesForInstantiation condition is now a double negative with a ! null-forgiving operator: (!IsBuiltIn(...) || attribute.AttributeClass!.IsGenericType). It is correct, because IsBuiltIn returning true implies a non-null class. It would read more clearly as attribute.AttributeClass is { IsGenericType: false } c && IsBuiltIn(c, ...). Optional.
No blocking issues. Good to merge once CI is green.

Both CodeRabbit findings are fixed in this head and their threads are resolved with commit references. Claude optional readability/helper suggestions remain non-blocking: keeping explicit built-in checks and the current null-safe own-class condition. The CodeRabbit docstring coverage advisory does not justify adding public-style API documentation to these internal helpers; existing internal helper conventions are retained.
Validation: generator suite 354 passed, 1 skipped; all three regression snapshots fail against the previous head and pass with this fix. Targeted runtime fixtures pass 4 tests per discovery mode using separate class filters. The distinct custom-source generic-class runtime fallback problem is filed as #7654, with the class-row inference here covered by a dedicated snapshot.
The previously awaited run 42040009324 completed successfully. This PR is back in draft for fresh review of the pushed fixes; no auto-merge is armed.
Overall this is a sound fix. It replaces the bare AttributeClass.Name string checks with namespace and containing-type checks (TUnit.Core, not nested). It does this without allocating display strings, so lookalike ArgumentsAttribute or MethodDataSourceAttribute types no longer get treated as built-ins. A grep of the generator for the remaining raw name literals finds only the two inside the new helper's callers, so I found no missed call sites. I didn't build or run anything. The regression snapshots and runtime fixtures cover the lookalike cases, and the follow-up commit adds derived-source coverage.
Suggestions, none blocking:
Inconsistent derived-type handling.IsMethodSource and the class-fallback check now use IsOrInheritsBuiltIn, so derived method sources are recognised. Other sites still use exact IsBuiltIn(..., "MethodDataSourceAttribute"):
StaticPropertyInitializationGenerator
GetOwnClassMethodDataSourcesForInstantiation
Deliberate or not, a derived source can behave differently in different code paths. Please add a short comment at each exact-match site saying why it is exact, or make them consistent.
Collapse the repeated pairs.IsOrInheritsBuiltIn(x, "MethodDataSourceAttribute") … IsOrInheritsBuiltIn(x, "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute") appears inline in TestMetadataGenerator. If InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute derives from MethodDataSourceAttribute, IsMethodSource already covers both. Named helpers such as IsInstanceMethodSource and IsStaticMethodSource would remove the string literals from the generator and make the instance versus static intent explicit.
Take a symbol, not a string. Longer term, resolving the well-known symbols once per compilation (compilation.GetTypeByMetadataName) and comparing with SymbolEqualityComparer would be more robust than matching name strings. It would also be cheaper in these hot loops. It is not needed for this PR.
Fixed both new findings in 48d413c. All current review threads are dispositioned. Generator suite: 354 passed, 1 skipped; targeted fixture: 6 passed per discovery mode. Previous run 42040009324 completed successfully; keeping this new head in draft for fresh reviews.
I read DataSourceAttributeHelper.cs in full. I did not read the rest of the diff (the generator call sites and the .verified.txt snapshots), so the notes below cover only the helper. I did not build or run anything.
What's good
Matching on namespace and containing type, instead of simple names, fixes the lookalike ArgumentsAttribute and MethodDataSourceAttribute bug. It does so without allocating display strings in the row-classification loops.
IsOrInheritsBuiltIn keeps derived method sources working through the inference and static-property paths. The PR description says a dedicated snapshot covers the int and string instantiations.
CanReadMethodSourceArguments is conservative. It trusts a custom constructor's arguments only when it forwards its own parameters unchanged to the built-in base constructor. Anything else falls back to the runtime IDataSourceAttribute path.
The new fixtures exercise generated and reflection modes, as AGENTS.md requires.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Name-based match.IsBuiltIn still matches on Name plus a three-level namespace walk. The more robust approach is to resolve the types once with compilation.GetTypeByMetadataName (for example TUnit.Core.ArgumentsAttribute and TUnit.Core.ArgumentsAttribute1) and compare with SymbolEqualityComparer. That also rules out a same-named type in another assembly that declares namespace TUnit.Core. The current check would accept such a type. You may prefer the namespace check here because it needs no Compilation` plumbing in the hot loops. If so, a short comment noting the limitation would help.
CanReadMethodSourceArguments syntax scan. It reads constructor syntax and requires an identifier-for-identifier forward. That is safe, but it only handles direct subclasses (BaseType), non-generic types, and a single declaration. A multi-level hierarchy silently takes the runtime fallback. This is correct but slower, so a comment saying so would help.
IsDataSourceAttribute fallback. It keeps a GloballyQualified() allocation path for unusual nested or generic interface symbols. That path is nearly dead, so consider dropping it or marking it as legacy.
Fixed the class-inference constructor-mapping finding in f67f4c6; its thread is resolved with evidence. Full generator suite: 354 passed, 1 skipped; regression snapshot reproduces the incorrect int class without the guard. The new class regression passes generated, reflection, and published Native AOT runs (one test each). The earlier awaited run 42040009324 completed successfully.
Claude's latest non-blocking suggestions are dispositioned: retain the existing namespace-component matcher to keep this scoped identity fix free of compilation plumbing; the constructor guard already documents that unknown mappings use the runtime path (including indirect hierarchies), and preserve the legacy interface display-name fallback to avoid expanding behavior changes here. Symbol-identity redesign and dropping that legacy fallback are optional follow-ups, not required for this correctness fix. Keeping this head in draft for fresh review.
The PR replaces name-only matching (AttributeClass?.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute") with a namespace-aware DataSourceAttributeHelper.IsBuiltIn, IsArguments, IsMethodSource and IsOrInheritsBuiltIn. This fixes the look-alike attribute misclassification, and the comparison allocates no display strings. It also adds snapshot and runtime regression tests. I found no blocking issues.
What looks good
The change is applied consistently across all the Name == sites in TestMetadataGenerator and StaticPropertyInitializationGenerator. The switch-to-if rewrite keeps the existing behavior.
Static property initialization now goes through IsDataSourceAttribute (IDataSourceAttribute). Derived and custom sources are no longer limited to two hard-coded base classes.
CanReadMethodSourceArguments errs on the safe side. When it can't prove that a derived constructor forwards its arguments unchanged, it falls back to the runtime IDataSourceAttribute path.
The tests cover all three scenarios: metadata, static properties and derived class sources.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Syntax-based forwarding check.CanReadMethodSourceArguments inspects constructor syntax (PrimaryConstructorBaseTypeSyntax and : base(x, y)). It is conservative, but it is also the most fragile part of the PR. Cases it doesn't handle are named arguments, reordered parameters, or constructors in referenced assemblies. These all take the fallback path, which is correct but untested. Add one snapshot with a reordering or remapping derived constructor to pin that behavior.
Repeated chain walks.IsMethodSource walks the base-type chain twice, once per name. IsOrInheritsBuiltIn could take a params string[] or a predicate, or a single GetBuiltInKind(symbol) helper could return an enum (Arguments, MethodSource, InstanceMethodSource, None). That would also remove the repeated string-literal names and make later additions harder to get wrong.
Lookalike gating.IsBuiltIn verifies the TUnit.Core namespace but not the assembly. That is enough for the stated bug. A user type declared in a TUnit.Core namespace of their own would still match, but that case is unrealistic.
The fallback condition near line 1463 is a double negative (!IsArguments && (!InheritsMDS || InheritsInstanceMDS)). Pulling it into a named helper such as IsStaticMethodSourceOrArguments would make the intent clearer.
The follow-up in #7654 for the open-generic runtime fallback is properly separated and documented. Overall this is a solid, well-tested fix.
The earlier blocker, run 42040009324, completed successfully. Rebased onto b9d47de to resolve the new conflicts with #7647. Reviewed the range-diff: retained main's class-row and tuple fixes and this PR's namespace-component classification and derived-source constructor guards. ArgumentsAttribute variants are sealed, so exact built-in matching preserves the qualified checks introduced by #7647.
Validation on the rebased head: full net10.0 generator suite 355 passed, 1 skipped, with no snapshot changes; targeted runtime classes 8 passed generated and 8 passed reflection (separate filters). Runtime build succeeded. No reflection implementation or public API changes; engine tests remain delegated to CI.
All existing inline findings have dispositions. Claude's latest optional remapping-test suggestion is already covered by the remapped constructor method and generic-class snapshots; helper consolidation remains optional and the existing namespace matcher meets the scoped fix. #7654 is a separately tracked runtime fallback bug, not a prerequisite for this PR. Keeping the new head in draft for fresh Claude and Codex verdicts.
Review: PR 7651 (classify built-in data-source attributes by symbol identity)
I read the new DataSourceAttributeHelper. I did not read the generator call-site changes or the new snapshots, and I did not run any tests. The helper looks correct.
What looks good
IsBuiltIn matches on name, a null ContainingType, and the TUnit.Core namespace chain. This fixes the lookalike ArgumentsAttribute and MethodDataSourceAttribute bug and allocates no display strings.
IsOrInheritsBuiltIn keeps derived method sources working, including generic forms of the attribute.
CanReadMethodSourceArguments only reads a custom constructor's arguments when it forwards them unchanged to the built-in constructor. Anything else falls back to the runtime IDataSourceAttribute path. This is a conservative choice.
Syntax-based forwarding check.CanReadMethodSourceArguments pattern-matches syntax: primary constructors, and a base(...) initializer with an empty body. It rejects ones with named arguments, reordered arguments or expression bodies, so a data source that forwards unchanged in an unsupported shape falls back to runtime and still works. It also returns false when the constructor has no DeclaringSyntaxReferences, such as one from a referenced assembly, so a derived method source from a referenced assembly always takes the runtime path. That is safe but worth a comment, and a test for derived sources from a referenced assembly would pin it down. A semantic check could replace the syntax matching. Use SemanticModel.GetOperation on the initializer, or compare the base constructor's parameter symbols, if you want fewer syntax edge cases.
Duplicated identity check. The TUnit.Core namespace-chain pattern is written out twice, in IsBuiltIn and in IsDataSourceAttribute. A small IsInTUnitCore(INamespaceSymbol?) helper would remove the duplication and keep the two checks in sync.
Redundant interface fallback. In IsDataSourceAttribute, the GloballyQualified() fallback allocates on every non-matching interface named IDataSourceAttribute. A user type with that name would hit it in the loops this PR is meant to keep allocation-free. Once Arity == 0, a null ContainingType and the namespace match, the fallback can only succeed for an interface that already matched above, so it is likely dead code. Removing it would keep the allocation-free goal.
Optional simplification. Each IsMethodSource call walks the base chain twice, once per attribute name. A single loop that checks both names would walk it once. This is minor.
Overall this is a solid targeted fix and I have no blocking concerns. CI, including the engine tests, still needs to pass.
