refactor(saas): serve users as profiles (users/<id>) instead of user agents - #7221
Conversation
Rename the profiles module and its files to user_agents to better reflect that these types describe user agent configuration. No behaviour changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce the core profile types used to describe and validate profiles. This gives the profiles module a shared vocabulary for representing profile data. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce shared profile types in the core crate so profile handling can rely on a single set of structures. Tests cover the new type behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
…t, and ops Adds unit tests across the profiles module covering background execution, credential handling, host resolution, layout, and operations. These lock in current behaviour for the profile subsystem and guard against regressions. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a schema for describing profile layout configuration so profile structure can be validated and shared across the core. Tests cover the new schema's parsing and validation behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a schema module for loading persisted user state and describing profile layout, so configuration can be read from and written to disk in a structured way. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
…dule Moved the logic that resolves the configuration directory out of the loader and into a dedicated module so it can be reused and tested in isolation. Behaviour is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds test coverage for loading configuration profiles, checking that profile-based loading behaves consistently with the base schema loader. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce layout profile types so profile definitions can describe their on-disk layout in a structured way. This gives downstream code a shared representation instead of ad-hoc parsing. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reorganize the profile layout code to make the module's structure clearer. No behaviour is changed. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Host profile tool invocations now go through the gateway instead of calling the host directly, so profile-scoped routing and policy checks apply consistently. Tests were updated to cover the new path. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Dropped helper code from the tool profile module that was no longer referenced anywhere. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds tests exercising how profile tools are resolved, covering the selection and filtering behaviour so regressions in profile tool handling are caught. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a profiles subsystem covering credentials, host and surface handling, background operations, schemas and tooling. This provides the core scaffolding needed to manage user profiles across the application. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce typed schemas for profile configuration so profile data can be validated and deserialized consistently across the core crate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The profiles module was no longer referenced anywhere in the crate, so it has been dropped to keep the codebase free of dead code. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Delete the background, credentials, gateway, host, and ops modules from the profiles crate. These files were no longer referenced anywhere and their removal reduces dead code in the crate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The host profile module was no longer referenced anywhere in the codebase, so it has been deleted to reduce dead code. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Rename the `user_agents` module to `profiles` and update every reference across the core, embed, and RPC crates, including the `profiles.*` RPC namespace and the operator-plane docs. The old name implied a per-user agent, but the module actually provisions and inspects the profile that serves each user, so the new name matches what the code does. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The gateway scope handling and its module docs now refer to profiles rather than agents, matching the naming used elsewhere in the codebase. No behaviour changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
…ribe. Please provide the actual Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test now expects the restored block to be present rather than absent, matching the runtime behaviour it verifies. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Document the runtime module's responsibilities and structure so the crate's core components are easier to navigate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Added README files describing the runtime and profiles modules so their responsibilities and structure are easier to discover. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Update the SaaS mode end-to-end tests to use the renamed profile provisioning RPCs and the profiles module, and assert that user ids outside the raw charset are hashed while raw ids are used verbatim. The per-user workspace directory is now users/ rather than agents/. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Renamed the local variable holding the per-user directory to profile_dir so the test reflects the profile-based layout rather than the old agent terminology. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The user-sandbox check derived the profile name from agent_dir instead of profile_dir, so the ProfileId validation could inspect the wrong path component. It now reads the name from profile_dir, matching the directory whose parent was just compared against the users directory. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Preserve the established user_agents RPC namespace
This changes the documented RPC namespace from user_agents.* to profiles.*. Existing callers and controller routing still use the established namespace, so clients following this README will call methods that are not registered. Keep the user_agents.* namespace, or document and implement an explicit compatibility alias/migration.

Preserve the established agent_id wire fields
The documented request and response field is changed from the established agent_id to profile_id. Existing RPC callers serialize and read agent_id, so following this contract breaks provisioning, status, credential, and deprovisioning calls even if the underlying implementation is only being renamed. Retain agent_id on the wire or provide a compatibility layer.

Exclude reserved IDs from the raw profile-ID rule
The rule says every ID matching the raw regex is used unchanged, but local, operator, and values such as h-abc match that regex while the next sentence says they are reserved. This leaves the mapping for concrete inputs like local contradictory; state that reserved IDs are excluded from raw passthrough and therefore hashed.

Do not log raw gateway-derived profile identifiers
Recovery runs on the first open and logs the profile ID. With ProfileIdMode::Raw, a gateway user ID that fits the raw charset is used unchanged, so this is a direct disclosure of gateway-derived user input in logs. Keep the recovery count but omit the identifier or use a content-free correlation field.

Keep raw profile identifiers out of host audit logs
Although this module's Outcome log is content-free, host.provision logs profile={id} on both the already-provisioned and newly-provisioned paths. In raw mode, that identifier can be the gateway-derived user ID, contradicting this module's guarantee that it is never logged and exposing it in operator logs. The corresponding host.deprovision call has the same issue; make the host logging content-free or use a sanitized/stable identifier.
Additional security observation
Keep raw profile identifiers out of provisioning logs
[RULE] sensitive-logging
This newly reachable provisioning path delegates to ProfileHost::provision, which logs profile={id}. In raw ID mode that value can be the gateway user identifier, so provisioning causes sensitive gateway-derived identifiers to enter operator logs despite this module's content-free log messages. Change the host logging path to omit the identifier or otherwise use a content-free correlation value.

Keep profile identifiers out of logs
The host logs the profile identifier, and the same pattern remains in the open, eviction, listing, and workspace-recovery logs. In raw profile-ID mode this value can be derived directly from a gateway user ID, so these messages disclose user identifiers to operators and log aggregators. Remove profile={id} from all host log messages and use content-free correlation fields instead.
Additional critique observation
Do not log profile identifiers
[RULE] sensitive-logging
This logs the profile ID on a normal provisioning path. In raw profile_ids mode, ProfileId can be the gateway user ID itself, so this can put user identifiers into operator logs; even hashed mode exposes a stable tenant identifier. Remove the interpolated ID from this and the corresponding open, eviction, listing, deprovisioning, and recovery log messages, or replace it with a content-free correlation value.
Additional tests observation
Do not log gateway-derived profile identifiers
[RULE] log-profile-identifier
ops.rs was cleaned to keep logs content-free, but host.rs still interpolates the profile id into its log lines (provisioned profile={id}, opened profile={id}, evicted idle profile={id}, skipping profile={id}, the recover_workspace messages, and the deprovision line). Under raw mode a qualifying profile id is the gateway user id, so these lines leak user identifiers to logs. The profiles README now asserts log lines never carry the profile id; host.rs contradicts that claim. Use content-free messages with a correlation field instead.
Additional e2e observation
Keep profile identifiers out of host log lines
[RULE] log-sensitive-identifier
Under raw mode the profile id is the gateway user id itself, so these log lines write user identifiers to logs: provisioned profile={id} here, plus deprovisioned profile={id} (archived), opened profile={id}, evicted idle profile={id}, evicted least recently used profile={id} in host.rs and profile={id} ... in background.rs and recover_workspace. The ops.rs log lines were made content-free; these were not. Log a correlation field or content-free message instead.

Validate the active user id before joining it into the profile path
user_id comes from active_user.toml and is joined as a path segment with no validation; a hand-edited or corrupt file containing .. or a separator escapes the users directory. The SaaS side now guarantees single-segment ids via ProfileId::parse, but the desktop resolver does not. Reuse that validation (or the raw-form check) before building the layout, and fail resolution on an invalid id.

Cover the hashed profile_ids mode end to end
The hashed mode is exercised only by config parsing in saas_tests.rs; the e2e suite provisions every user through raw-mode semantics (ProfileIdMode::Raw at each call site) and only incidentally hashes alice@example.com because it does not fit the raw charset. A gateway request under an operator configured with profile_ids = "hashed" — the mode whose purpose is keeping user ids out of paths and responses — has no coverage. Add an e2e deployment with the hashed mode and assert no user identifier appears in paths, listings or provisioning responses.

Handle profile ID mode changes without silently remapping users
Flipping profile_ids between raw and hashed (or changing a user id's qualification) maps every affected user onto a different profile directory: their config, credential and workspace appear to vanish and fresh profiles are provisioned from nothing. The README now documents the hazard but nothing detects it. At minimum, log a warning at boot, or refuse to boot when existing <root>/users/ entries were produced under a different recorded mode.

Drive the hashed profile_ids mode end to end
Every e2e expectation constructs its id with ProfileIdMode::Raw, and no e2e deployment sets profile_ids = "hashed" in the operator config. The hashed mode — the one operators who must not leak user ids into paths and storage would run — is never driven through the running system: a test would boot the deployment with profile_ids = "hashed" in operator.toml, provision a user, and assert the response and the users/ directory use the h-<hex> form and never contain the user id. Until then the hashed path ships verified only by unit tests.

Retain the open slot when credential cleanup fails
The slot is removed before credentials::clear runs. If credential cleanup fails, this function returns an error, but the profile is no longer marked open despite the comment saying cleanup can be retried. A concurrent or subsequent open(id) can therefore reopen the profile while its old credential remains in the keyring, and another deprovision attempt no longer sees the prior in-use state. Only remove the slot after credential cleanup and archiving succeed, or restore it on every failure path.

Preserve the established user_agents RPC namespace
This change renames the host facade from user_agents to profiles. Existing hosts and RPC wiring that import openhuman_embed::host_internals::user_agents will no longer compile or will lose the established namespace, even though the underlying gateway API is only being reorganized. Preserve the old module as a compatibility facade (or update every caller in the same change).
Additional critique observation
Preserve the established user_agents facade
[RULE] api-compatibility
This removes openhuman_embed::__host::user_agents and replaces it with __host::profiles. The checked tree has no remaining references, but the module is explicitly a host-internals facade for the dependent crates, and vendor consumers were not available to verify; any un-migrated consumer now fails to compile. Keep user_agents as a compatibility alias (or retain the old module while adding profiles) until all consumers are migrated.

Keep raw profile identifiers out of host logs
id can be derived from an untrusted gateway user ID in raw profile-ID mode. Logging it in host operations leaks user-controlled identifiers and contradicts the profile-ID contract that hashed mode keeps user identifiers out of logs and namespaces. Use a content-free event message (or a stable correlation value) without interpolating id; apply the same treatment to the other profile-id log statements in this file.

Keep raw profile identifiers out of deprovisioning logs
This log line emits the profile identifier after deprovisioning. In raw mode that identifier can contain a gateway-derived user identifier, so the host leaks untrusted identity data to operator logs. Remove the interpolated identifier or replace it with a content-free audit event.

Keep raw profile identifiers out of host log lines
The ops and gateway log lines were made content-free, but host.rs still interpolates the profile id into provisioned profile={id}, opened profile={id}, evicted idle profile={id} and the list/recovery warnings. Under raw profile_ids mode the profile id is the gateway user id itself, so these lines log a user identifier. Use a content-free message as the ops layer now does.

Drive the hashed profile_ids mode end to end
profile_ids = "hashed" is covered only by config parsing (SaasConfig::load yields ProfileIdMode::Hashed). No test provisions a user and checks that the resulting on-disk directory, gateway resolution or provisioning response use the h-<hash> form, and no test shows the same user resolving to the same hashed profile on a second request. If gateway.rs stopped passing host.saas().profile_ids (or for_user ignored the mode), every existing test would still pass.

Cover the deprovision refusal when credential clearing fails
This new guard — refuse to archive when the keyring credential cannot be cleared, so a re-provisioned profile cannot inherit the old secret — is a stated invariant with no test in the diff: no test makes credentials::clear fail and asserts deprovision errors and leaves the directory in place. A regression that reverts to the old warn-and-continue behaviour would silently reintroduce credential inheritance across re-provisioning.

Drive the hashed profile_ids mode end to end
profile_ids = "hashed" is an operator-facing configuration knob: it changes how every gateway user id becomes a profile id and therefore which on-disk profile serves a request. The e2e suite exercises only the default Raw mode — its hashed id comes from a non-conforming user id, not from the setting. A test would have to boot the SaaS deployment with profile_ids = "hashed" in the operator config, provision a user, and verify the request is served from the h-<hash> profile directory. As shipped, a broken hashed path is caught only by unit-level TOML parsing.

Handle profile ID mode changes without silently remapping users
Switching profile_ids between raw and hashed remaps every gateway user onto a different profile directory, orphaning their workspace, threads, memory and credential. The only mitigation is a doc sentence. The metadata file already carries layout_version; a written profile id mode (or a check comparing stored hashed ids against the configured mode) would let the boot refuse or warn instead of silently re-tenenting users. If silent remap is accepted as intended behaviour, record that decision — as written it is an operator-visible data-partition change with no guard.

When profile_ids is omitted (the default raw mode) and a gateway user ID matches the raw charset, id is the user's stable identifier, so this info log writes that identifier to production logs; the same interpolation remains in the already-provisioned, open/evict/recovery, and background log paths. Remove or redact the ID at all of these sites (or log a separate one-way correlation value), since opting into hashed mode should not be required to keep user identifiers out of logs.

Main now carries tinyhumansai#7221, tinyhumansai#7230 and tinyhumansai#7227 with their review changes; its versions of the shared code win (max_agents_open alias, content-free outcomes, deprovision keeps the profile when credential cleanup fails, lease fixes, tenant key escaping). This PR's additions are applied on top: - profiles/host.rs: credential cleanup on deprovision runs under the profile's records context; on failure the profile is kept (main) and the lease this call holds is released so a retry can take it. - profiles/ops.rs: async host calls and profile-scoped credential install/clear, with main's content-free messages; release and the operator-dir refusal made content-free too. - profiles/gateway.rs: held-elsewhere log is content-free; from_open_error drops its now-unused id argument. - flows: trigger.rs takes main's owner::config_for_scope; the profile-as-tenant check moves into owner.rs. - storage/agents.rs: main's default_context fallback (SaaS is already excluded by the surrounding guards). - saas_gateway.rs/tests: keep this PR's split decide (Admitted/Refused) plus the 409 profile_held response, which supersedes main's typed refusal. - embed host_internals: re-export profiles::host::host and the gateway HeldBy/PROFILE_HELD/PROFILE_OWNER_HEADER items for rpc. - Baselines: saas-ambient tightened (10 fixed sites); storage-bypass entry moved from user_agents/host.rs to profiles/registry.rs. What
This is the first step in moving SaaS from "a user is one agent" to "a user is one profile". A profile uses the same
users/<id>/encapsulation the desktop app already has. It is a rename plus a shared layout, so behaviour stays the same apart from where files live and the RPC names.user_agents/is nowprofiles/.AgentHostbecomesProfileHost,UserAgentStatebecomesProfile,UserAgentIdbecomesProfileId, andagent_configbecomesprofile_config.user_agents.*toprofiles.*(provision,deprovision,list,status,set_credential,clear_credential). In params and results,agent_idbecomesprofile_id.ProfileIdMode):^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9_-]{0,63}$, so the desktop's 24-hex backend user ids pass through unchanged.
