Summary

  • Update vendor/tinyagents to canonical upstream/main at a55f25a924a673c812c7aa95e562488dd0d0f3b3.
  • Adapt hosted agent definitions to the upstream typed definition vocabulary while preserving tool visibility and delegation policy.
  • Preserve subagent model-hint routing and the lead's selected model.

Problem

The updated TinyAgents definition contract replaces flat name, description, model and tool fields with the portable definition vocabulary. The old adapter does not compile; flattening model hints into exact pins also loses their routing semantics.

Solution

Project display names, capability summaries, typed model preferences, agent tiers, named tool scopes and explicit delegate IDs into the upstream contract. Resolve typed subagent hints against prebuilt hint:<name> routes, preserving exact-pin precedence, lead selection and primary fallback. Update existing adapter assertions and two scripted fixtures to accurately declare their tool and model identity. Regenerate the root lockfile against the updated dependency graph. The separate desktop lockfile correction landed in follow-up #7471 because this PR merged concurrently before that correction was pushed.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path and failure/edge cases).
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80% — coverage was not measured; the requester explicitly authorized local validation and ignoring CI.
  • Coverage matrix updated — N/A: compatibility and behavior preservation, no feature rows added or removed.
  • All affected feature IDs are listed under Related.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced; test models and tools are deterministic fakes.
  • Manual smoke checklist updated — N/A: no release-cut UI surface changes.
  • Linked issue closed — N/A: direct maintenance request without an issue.

Impact

Hosted chat, CLI and embedded agents retain explicit tool scopes and tier-filtered delegation. Typed subagent hints select their configured routes; the root agent keeps the user's selected primary model. No transcript migration or product policy changes.

  • pnpm typecheck — N/A: no TypeScript files changed.
  • Focused tests: 573 TinyAgents tests passed (1 ignored) and 62 session-builder tests passed. Both run with RUST_MIN_STACK=67108864, --locked, and one Cargo job. The typed-hint regression failed before its fix; the tier projection regression failed with Worker instead of Chat before its fix.
  • Rust fmt/check: cargo fmt --all --check; Rust layout, crate-chain and feature-forwarding scripts; scripts/ci-cancel-aware.sh cargo build --locked --manifest-path Cargo.toml -p openhuman-cli --bin openhuman-core --jobs 1 passed.

Bump windows-sys to 0.61.2 across the dependency graph and add toml 0.8.23
alongside its supporting crates. The tinyagents-definition crate gains
anyhow, serde_json, toml, and tracing, and tinyagents now depends on it.

Update the definition registry tests to read projected fields through the
harness accessors, adding a helper that unwraps the materialized named tool
scope and panics on wildcard. The model spec test now checks that projection
preserves inherit, exact, and hint routing instead of comparing the local
mapping helper.

… model scopes

The registry now emits the portable definition's named tool scope and
provider-neutral model spec instead of flattening tools into a string list and
resolving hints to aliases, so wildcard materialization and inherited routing
survive projection. Tests were updated to assert against the new scope and
model types.

The custom agent resolution test now checks the model hint and the
absence of a pin as two distinct assertions, matching the split
accessors on the model config.

Add tests for typed model hints in the turn model resolver, verifying that a
subagent hint resolves to its tier route, that a team lead keeps its selected
primary, that an explicit pin wins over a hint, and that an unconfigured hint
falls back to the primary model.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The turn model resolver now derives a `hint:<name>` route from the request
hint and uses it as a fallback when no explicit model pin is set, so
sub-agents can still reach prebuilt tier routes. The lead's explicit model
selection continues to take precedence over any hint.

Extend the failure-effect test so a shell error of "executable not found"
is asserted to yield the missing_app correction, and move the unsupported

The test profile now specifies a model name so the budget stop turn
tests exercise the same profile shape as production.

The host definition registry now carries the definition's validated agent tier through to the resolved output so the model resolver can route workloads by tier. The scope doc comment was also tightened to state the invariant it actually enforces.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The TinyAgents host adapter now projects typed agent definitions, model specifications, and named tool scopes. The turn model resolver can use typed hints for sub-agent routes. Tests were updated for the typed contract and routing behavior.

Changes

TinyAgents integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typed definition projection
vendor/tinyagents, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/host/definition_registry.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/host/definition_registry_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/session_host/builder/builder_tests_session_definition_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/host/bundle_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/budget_stop_turn_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/middleware_failure_effect_tests.rs
The host adapter projects display_name, when_to_use, typed agent tiers, agent IDs, model variants, and named tool scopes. Wildcard scopes are materialized from registered tools, with denylist filtering and fail-closed behavior when the catalogue is unavailable. Tests now use the typed definition API; model-profile and failure-effect expectations were also updated.
Typed model hint routing
crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/turn_models.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/tinyagents/turn_models_tests.rs
Sub-agent route selection uses an explicit model pin first, then a nonempty typed hint. The lead keeps its selected model, and unavailable routes fall back to the primary.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 50d25

Existing access restrictions appear preserved in the inspected code. Downstream permission enforcement could not be fully verified, leaving limited but material uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The security-relevant exposure is the invocation's registered tool catalogue and declared delegation surface, including effectful tools made eligible through discovery. The inspected resolver selects existing routes rather than constructing new destinations. The unavailable runtime consumer prevents confirmation that this remains the effective downstream authority ceiling.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Registration admits only members of a supplied allowlist, with Some(empty) admitting nothing; None remains explicitly unrestricted. Subagent registration independently strips spawn/delegate tools. The host security gate rejects nested calls and unknown tools, applies channel policy, and continues through applicable command and autonomy checks after channel approval. These host controls predate this PR; their presence alone does not prove downstream invocation of them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The host constructs a fresh definition adapter and security gate for each invocation from that invocation's shared tool instances. Registered, deferred and synthesized delegation-name snapshots are populated before the capability bundle is returned; projection itself does not mutate those snapshots. This supports host-side isolation across repeated and concurrent invocations, but downstream grant cleanup and cancellation behavior remain outside verified coverage.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — With the pinned dependency source available, verify that named scopes and tier-filtered delegate IDs constrain discovery and execution, agree with the host allowlist, and do not carry discovery authority across failed, cancelled or concurrent invocations.

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: This revision moves the OpenHuman host's definition projection onto the crate-native `tinyagents_definition` vocabulary (typed `ToolScope`, `ModelSpec`, `AgentTier`, `display_name()`), and adds a `model_hint` branch to `TurnModelResolver` so typed hints reach tier routes for sub-agents while the lead keeps its selected primary. The accompanying tests were updated in step with the new types and add real assertions for typed hints, pin precedence, and lead-over-hint; the rewritten `model_for` is covered by `projected_model_preserves_inherit_exact_and_hint_routing`. The earlier finding about the lead's selected primary being overridden no longer applies — the diff keeps the lead on `self.lead` unconditionally, including for a hint resolved to a built route, and `lead_keeps_selected_primary_over_typed_hint` pins that in reverse. I found no defect worth blocking on; I did not verify the crate-side `resolve_tool_scope`/`ModelSpec` accessors beyond what the repository context showed. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `b7d22e687243`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adapts the host agent-definition projection to upstream TinyAgents' typed definition vocabulary (display_name, when_to_use, agent_tier, typed ModelSpec, ToolScope, SubagentEntry) and teaches TurnModelResolver to treat a typed model hint as `hint:<name>` while still letting the lead's selected primary win and an exact pin take precedence. The earlier concern about the lead honouring a definition pin over the user's selection was already fixed before this revision — the new `lead_keeps_selected_primary_over_typed_hint` test covers exactly that path and the resolver returns `self.lead` for team leads — so it is dropped rather than re-raised. I found no defect that would fail for a concrete reachable input; the adapter and resolver changes look sound. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `b7d22e687243`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
