Summary

  • Bumps tinystoragedrivers to v0.6.0 (storage bus contract + tinystoragedrivers-client reference server) through tinyagents#420 (merged first; this PR moves vendor/tinyagents to its merge commit).
  • Adds modules::storage_host, which serves ai.tinyhumans.tinystorage.Storage (Documents, Streams, Blobs, Secrets at /ai/tinyhumans/tinystorage/<Object>) to loaded modules from the installed StorageBackend.
  • Adds modules::storage_grants: the per-module grant (collections with their schema, stream/blob/secret-name prefixes, read-only or writable) enforced on every call.
  • Forwards a storage-s3 feature (core, embed, tinyhumans, rpc, cli, tui) and lists it in the compiled-feature report and generated docs.
  • Adds a [patch] for the tinybus git source so the new storage wire crate does not compile a second tinybus into the graph (root and app manifests; lockfiles regenerated).

Part of #7522. Part of #7636 (this is the first host slice; what remains is listed below).

Problem

Loaded cdylib modules cannot reach the host's storage; they keep their own files or call narrow per-module callbacks. #7522 makes tinystoragedrivers the single storage owner and gives modules the same ports over TinyBus, which needs a host that decides who may touch what.

Solution

  • Caller. The module is the broker-authenticated sender (CallContext::authenticated_sender via call_with_context), mapped to a registry module id by asking the broker who owns each module's bus name. No sender, or a peer that is not a registry module, is refused.
  • Scope never comes from the request. The wire types reject unknown fields, so a forged scope/database/grant is a decode failure. The host derives module:<id>@<base> from the module id and storage::scope_from (fail-closed in SaaS with no profile). For a profile it is <profile>~module:<id>, which sits under the profile's session-key prefix, so the profile's lease fence already covers module writes (a hashed fallback would have escaped the fence, so a profile scope that is too long is an error instead).
  • Grants. storage_grants::authorize reads the target of every selector (batch ops and checks included) and refuses another collection, a stream/blob/secret name outside the granted prefixes, a write on a read-only grant, DropCollection, a changed EnsureCollection, and listings that would enumerate beyond the grant (Collections replies are trimmed). Unknown selectors and missing targets fail closed. Secrets is a confidential route; the host also refuses a private admission.
  • Schema is host-only. ensure_collection runs from the grant's declared CollectionSpecs when a module is bound to a scope; a module repeating the declared spec is answered without touching the backend.
  • Fencing is host-side. Writes consult the process fence registry before they reach the backend (stale lease surfaces as fenced); the backend is the fenced one from storage::open, so the check also holds underneath.
  • Audit. One openhuman::storage_host line per call: module, scope, object, op, target (collection or granted prefix), outcome. No payload by construction (the record has no field for one; a test asserts a payload marker never appears).
  • No module declares a grant yet (storage_grants::declared is empty, with a test), so no module has storage until its build declares some. Undeclared means refused.
  • WatchOpen/WatchClose and Blobs.PutStream/GetStream answer unsupported rather than being half-served: they need a per-module bus stream and signal route.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case): 35 new tests in modules::storage_grants / modules::storage_host. Negative cases: another module's collection, another scope (profile), same collection name in two modules, forged scope field, undeclared module, unknown peer, no sender, read-only grant, reserved/invalid grants, schema change, listing trim, stream/blob/secret prefix escape, stale lease (fenced) and a real in-process broker run showing the bus hands the host the authenticated sender.
  • Diff coverage >= 80%: not measured locally (core coverage run is too slow here); the new files are covered by the tests above.
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, no feature row changes (host plumbing with no declared consumer yet).
  • All affected feature IDs listed: N/A.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced.
  • Manual smoke checklist updated: N/A, no release-cut surface changes.
  • Linked issue closed via Closes #NNN: N/A, this PR is a slice of Storage 2/8: openhuman host — storage_host bus server, scope-from-caller, grants, default sqlite URL, legacy import, drop classic mode #7636 (see below).

Impact

  • Desktop/CLI: no behavior change; the new bus object is served but no module declares a grant, so every module call is refused (no-grant-declared) and the audit line says so.
  • Dependency graph: adds tinystoragedrivers-bus and tinystoragedrivers-client behind the modules feature; one tinybus remains in the graph.
  • storage-s3 is off in both the contributor and product sets.
  • Stale-lease writes from a module report the content-free fenced category through the host's pre-check. The backend's own refusal (the OpenHuman FenceError wrapper) still maps to backend inside tinystoragedrivers' server, because the server cannot see OpenHuman's fence type.

Remaining on #7636 (not in this PR)

  1. Default desktop storage URL sqlite:<workspace>/storage and the one-time read-only import of legacy per-domain DBs and JSON/JSONL (storage::import, fixture-based lossless test). Today the default still installs no process backend; small stores import their old tables inside their own .db, and sessions/cron/flows/graph checkpoints keep their files. Moving the default needs the session store and the large relational stores adopted first.
  2. Retire classic mode (StorageMode::Classic, OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL=classic, and the SaaS-without-URL fallback). Approvals, devices, notifications and task-source stores still carry the legacy-table code path that their tests select with classic.
  3. Remove direct rusqlite from openhuman-core (still used by config/workspace/state.rs, cron/policy.rs, the four small stores' legacy readers and storage/local.rs) and from openhuman-cli (dev-dependency for tests/storage_default_import_e2e.rs, a read-only reader). These become the allowlisted readers once item 1's importer owns them.
  4. Module-side transport: the TinyBus proxy StorageTransport and module-side registration (tsd#35 remaining), blob streaming (PutStream/GetStream, >16 MiB) and watch signals (WatchChanged projected to per-module bus signals). The object path root /ai/tinyhumans/tinystorage is chosen here; it should move into the tinystoragedrivers-bus constants.
  5. A real module declaring a grant (tinychannels Storage 6/8: tinychannels — storage contract replaces host persistence callbacks; durable WhatsApp sessions #7640, tinymcp Storage 5/8: tinymcp — registry/cache/index/audit on documents+streams, env/OAuth on Secrets, drop rusqlite #7639, ...), and the modules.toml operator override for grants (declarations are compiled in today).
  6. vendor/tinyjuice/vendor/tinyagents still pins the older tinyagents/tsd copy (only the vendor/tinyagents copy is built; the root [patch] points into it).

Pre-existing failures seen while validating (also on upstream/main)

  • cargo check --tests -p openhuman-cli --features <product set> fails to compile tests/mcp_stdio_integration.rs (openhuman_core::mcp::config_servers does not exist) and mcp_registry_multi_server/raw-coverage channel tests (email_channel, telegram configured out).
  • cargo clippy -p openhuman --tests reports duplicate_mod for tools/ops_tests*.rs.

Extend the storage host and grant tests to pin down behaviour that was
previously only implied: the host's declared schema is enforced through a

The bus-level storage host tests moved out of storage_host_tests.rs into a

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2f265

This change adds grant-controlled storage access for loadable modules. No module declares a grant yet, so every call is denied by default. One bounded issue remains: a single key-load failure can leave module secrets disabled until restart. This is safe to merge with a follow-up fix before any module receives a secrets grant.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2f265

The new storage interface is confined to the existing private module bus, and no production module currently has a storage grant. The inspected host rejects missing identities and undeclared access. No introduced vulnerability was established, but caller ownership guarantees and downstream storage enforcement remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — No production module currently has authority to reach scoped storage through this interface. If grants are later added, the mediation path bounds access by module-derived scope and declared resources. Compromise of a native module itself remains host-process compromise under the existing trust model, not merely access to its granted collection.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Production module identity is inferred from current ownership of registry well-known bus names. Missing sender context and unmatched senders are denied. This avoids stale ownership caching, but name ownership is not independently proven to attest an admitted module: broker name-acquisition policy is unavailable, and the integration test substitutes a fixed sender directory.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Host write admission rejects stale or unverified leases, and fencing-capable backend operations can close the admission-to-write race. The existing wrapper falls back to host-check-only writes when atomic driver fencing is unavailable or unsupported. That fallback predates this PR and has no demonstrated increase in module exposure while grants remain empty.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before enabling production grants, establish that registry-name ownership is restricted to admitted modules, or bind storage identity directly to loader-attested connections. Verify confidentiality enforcement and downstream request decoding at the same activation boundary.
  • proposed — For future grants requiring strict authority-loss containment, make supported atomic-fencing behavior an explicit backend requirement rather than relying on host-check-only fallback. Establish recovery semantics for interrupted schema binding before enabling those grants.

A key-provider failure previously logged a warning and bound the grant without secrets, silently degrading modules that requested secret prefixes. The bind now fails with a backend error so the retryable condition surfaces instead of caching a server that lacks secrets.

The test environment can now simulate an unavailable key provider, and a new
test asserts that a failure while binding secrets is not cached so a later
call succeeds once the provider recovers.

Add a test that walks every selector exposed by the storage driver contract and asserts the exact set the write fence classifies as mutating. A rename or addition in the contract now fails this test, so authorization cannot drift from the exposed interface unnoticed.

The test now builds its error through StorageError::unavailable and the
retry closure takes the rig and payload as parameters so the future can be
awaited without borrowing the captured set.

The test now stores the caller identity in a local variable so the
borrowed reference outlives the async block, avoiding a temporary that
would be dropped too early.

The key provider retry test built its Set call inline through a closure, which obscured the two attempts it makes. A shared set_secret helper now performs the call so the test reads as a failure followed by a retry.

P2 Badge Delegate conditional writes through the fenced adapters

When a granted module uses AtomicBatchChecked or AppendBatchIfOffset, the host forwards the request to a StorageServer built from the installed backend; storage::open always returns FencedBackend, but FencedDocuments only overrides atomic_batch and FencedStreams only overrides append_batch (storage/fenced_backend.rs:213-346). The inner driver's atomic check/offset implementation is therefore never reached, so the trait fallback is unsupported or loses the conditional-write guarantee under concurrent callers; add fenced overrides for both methods before exposing them on the bus.

P2 Badge Preserve S3 presigning through the fence wrapper

When storage-s3 is enabled, storage::open wraps the S3 backend in FencedBackend, but BlobStore for FencedBlobs ends at list (storage/fenced_backend.rs:362-386) and does not delegate presign_get or presign_put. The new bus selectors consequently hit the default unsupported path instead of the S3 implementation even though the feature and selectors are enabled; forward both methods with the intended PUT fence policy and exercise the enabled gate.

P2 Badge Audit the granted stream prefix instead of the full name

When a module embeds a thread, user, or other sensitive identifier in a stream name, this passes the complete caller-supplied value into AuditRecord.target, which LogAudit emits at info level; the blob and secret branches instead record only the matched grant prefix. Capture the prefix returned by StorageGrant::prefixed and audit that so the storage audit cannot retain arbitrary request identifiers.
