Summary

  • New storage_desktop_upgrade_e2e: one pre-storage desktop workspace holding every legacy per-domain DB and JSON/JSONL file the importers read (approvals, devices, notifications, task sources, the committed tinyflows fixture with cron/flows/drafts/checkpoints, sessions with turn state, tinymcp servers+env+audit, connector prefs and trigger archive, x402 ledger, tinybox jail index, tinyjuice CCR). Run once per driver (memory, sqlite, file, mongodb): every record imports (found == written), a second boot reports AlreadyDone, and the workspace tree is byte-identical afterwards.
  • New tinymcp_storage_smoke_e2e (tinymcp storage: smoke test released 0.18.0 and measure coverage #7737): spawns the real openhuman-core serve twice on one workspace + storage URL with the registry-pinned, digest-verified tinymcp 0.18.0 cdylib; adds a server with an env secret, restarts, lists it. Checks the env value is never returned over RPC nor in clear text on disk, and that the module wrote no legacy mcp_clients/ DB. Hermetic: all other components disabled, nothing fetched.
  • Bug found and fixed by that smoke test: the host refused Capabilities on an object a grant does not hold. The module storage client probes every object when it connects, so tinymcp (no blob prefixes) failed to bind and silently fell back to in-memory storage ("host storage unavailable; directory operations stay in memory"): servers vanished on restart. Capabilities is now answered for any object; every other call on an ungranted object is still refused (unit test pins both).
  • scripts/e2e-core.sh [sqlite|mongodb]: headless core e2e with OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL set (sqlite scratch dir, or a unique db on a loopback TSD_MONGO_URL replica set). storage-mongodb.yml now runs the upgrade e2e and e2e-core.sh mongodb on the replica set; the storage-drivers lane runs the upgrade e2e on sqlite/file. test-rust-e2e.sh runs the smoke (--ignored, serial).

Problem

#7755/#7737 acceptance: nothing yet proved the whole upgrade path together, or that a real released cdylib persists through the storage bus under the real host.

Solution

Tests + CI plus the one-line host grant fix the smoke exposed. No vendor pins or concurrent-session files touched.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + failure/edge: second-boot no-op, secret not exposed, ungranted object still refused)
  • Diff coverage: test-only plus a 1-line change covered by the new unit test
  • Coverage matrix: N/A (test and CI only)
  • No new external network dependencies (module is staged by digest; components disabled; mock-free)
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A (covered by the new e2e tests)

Impact

Host fix: modules whose grant lacks some object (tinymcp, blobs) now bind to host storage instead of silently running in memory. Local checks: new tests pass on memory+sqlite; mongodb cases only run in CI (no replica set locally). pnpm rust:layout fails only on core/observability.rs (3479 > 3477 lines), which this PR does not touch (pre-existing on upstream/main).

Related

Remaining for #7755 (not done here, host constraints):

  • cdylib bus e2e for a >16 MiB blob via tinybus.Stream and a watch signal: the host answers PutStream/GetStream/WatchOpen as unsupported until tinybus#66 (peer-bound stream accept, per-peer signals) lands and the host binds them (Storage: tinybus stream/signal binding, sweep hook and pin cleanup (follow-up to #7655) #7743).
  • Negative tests (other module's collections, other scope, undeclared collection) with a real loaded cdylib: need a probe module or a second granted module; today these are covered with host doubles in storage_host_tests/storage_grants_tests.
  • Mongo e2e runs in CI only.

Validation Run

  • Rust fmt on changed leaf files; clippy on openhuman-cli tests clean for the new files
  • check-feature-forwarding, check-crate-chain, check-submodule-monotonic, self-hosted lanes test
  • modules::storage_ lib tests (99 pass)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Modules can check storage capabilities without a grant for the specific object. Other operations on ungranted objects remain denied.
  • Tests
    • Expanded desktop-upgrade checks across storage drivers, including imported data, repeat imports, and preservation of workspace files.
    • Added TinyMCP storage checks across restarts to verify that server settings persist while secret values remain protected.
    • Added coverage for running storage checks with SQLite and MongoDB.

Add an end-to-end test that exercises the desktop storage upgrade path,
verifying that existing data is migrated correctly when the storage
format changes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds a Cargo test target for the desktop upgrade end-to-end test, which
builds a full pre-storage workspace, imports it on each driver, and
verifies the migration is lossless with legacy files left untouched. It
gets its own binary because it installs a storage backend into the
process-wide slot.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds an end-to-end smoke test that exercises the tinymcp storage path to
catch regressions in the basic read and write flow.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a Cargo test target for the TinyMCP storage smoke end-to-end test, which exercises the released cdylib under the real host by adding a server, restarting the core, and listing it. The target requires the storage-sqlite, modules, and mcp features and is ignored unless a staged module is present.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The Rust E2E runner now executes the tinymcp_storage_smoke_e2e suite with
--ignored and a single test thread, since it exercises the released TinyMCP
cdylib against the real host and storage backend and spawns openhuman-core
twice. The staged module is already on OPENHUMAN_MODULE_PATH from the
preceding setup.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The Rust e2e runner now appends OPENHUMAN_E2E_EXTRA_FEATURES to the product
feature list when set, so callers such as scripts/e2e-core.sh can enable the
storage-mongodb driver that the default product set omits.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add the desktop upgrade e2e test and the headless core e2e script to the
MongoDB storage workflow, and trigger the workflow when those files or the
e2e helper scripts change. This covers the OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL replica-set
path tracked in tinyhumansai#7755.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Register storage_desktop_upgrade_e2e in the storage e2e target list so the
self-hosted lanes plan schedules the new desktop upgrade suite alongside the
other storage end-to-end targets.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…ade fixture

The desktop upgrade end-to-end fixture seeded a task source with an empty
filter and a bare inbox target, which no longer matches the shapes the
migration expects. The seed now uses a provider-scoped filter and a quoted
target so the upgrade path is exercised against realistic stored data.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The desktop upgrade end-to-end test now seeds a classic-layout session
workspace, writing a transcript, an in-flight turn snapshot and a
sessions.db row, so the upgrade path is exercised against real session
data rather than only flows, cron and checkpoints.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a debug print of the workspace file listing before the second
process starts, to make it easier to see what state the storage
directory is in when the restart assertion fails.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The smoke test now writes the core process stderr to a per-port log file
and prints matching storage, mcp, and module lines, making failures
easier to diagnose. A scratch copy of the storage directory is also
taken for post-mortem inspection.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
A module's storage client probes every object's capabilities when it connects and refuses to bind if any probe is refused, so a grant lacking one object left the whole module without storage. Capabilities requests are now answered regardless of the grant, while every other call on an ungranted object is still denied.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The smoke test now disables every component except the one under test so the
others are not fetched from the release host, since the test never reaches the
network. Debug log dumping and scratchpad copying were removed as they were
leftover diagnostics.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The component-disabling environment variables were moved from the top of the
file into the command builder so they actually apply to the spawned core, and
the list was extended to cover every component rather than only the first five.
This keeps the test from reaching the network for modules it does not exercise.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Collapse the `try_start` signature onto one line and drop a stray blank line in the desktop upgrade test. The duplicated comment above the module env vars in the smoke test was removed as well.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The e2e-core script now stages the released TinyMCP module and runs the
tinymcp_storage_smoke_e2e target directly instead of delegating to the
generic suite runner, so the smoke test exercises the real host against
the selected storage backend. The test itself honours an inherited
OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL and only asserts on the local sqlite file when it
created that backend itself.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The test now checks the Capabilities action on Blobs specifically and adds an assertion that other actions on that object are still denied, making the intent of the case explicit rather than looping over several objects.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformat the multi-line assertion in the storage grants test to satisfy rustfmt line width limits. No behaviour change.

Require all host import reports.

The loop validates each returned report, but the explicit assertion requires only four domains. A missing flows, cron, or sessions report can therefore go undetected. The flow importer is omitted when flows is disabled. Add the three domains and make flows required for this whole-workspace test.

CI currently enables flows through the default/product feature sets, but the test target does not declare that requirement.

Exercise module imports after a real restart.

The second pass verifies only host importers. It does not call the module importers or recheck module documents, streams, blobs, or secrets.

import_once records completed imports in process-wide state. A second call in the same process can therefore skip the importer without testing durable persistence. The module unit tests cover lower-level repeat imports with MemoryStorage, but they do not cover the public module import flow across a fresh process and durable backend.

For durable drivers, run the module importers in a fresh process against the same workspace and backend, then assert that module data remains unchanged.

Check inherited backends for plaintext.

When OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL selects MongoDB or a file outside tmp, the assertion scans only files(tmp.path()). It can therefore pass without checking the configured backend. This is a coverage gap in the smoke test, not evidence that production stores plaintext.

Limit the scan to the local SQLite case and add a backend-specific at-rest check for inherited MongoDB and external-file backends. The RPC assertions only check disclosure over RPC.

The e2e-core script now requires TSD_MONGO_URL to use the mongodb:// scheme and checks the parsed host rather than a string prefix, so hosts like mongodb://localhost.example.com no longer pass as loopback. The MongoDB storage workflow also triggers on the tinymcp storage smoke test.

The loopback check previously inspected only the first host of a
comma-separated seed list, so a remote secondary seed could slip past it.
Each host is now stripped of userinfo, port and query and checked
individually, rejecting the URL unless all of them are local.

The two new e2e suites assert real content (record counts, digests of the legacy tree, the secret never appearing in plaintext) rather than proxies. The one concrete defect is in `scripts/test-rust-e2e.sh`: the new `tinymcp_storage_smoke_e2e` branch was inserted twice verbatim, so the first `continue` makes the second block dead code.
