What

Moves two of the remaining path-bound artifact writers onto the tinystoragedrivers BlobStore port. The in-memory driver is the default for library users.

  • artifacts::ArtifactOffload stores worker-result artifacts on a BlobStore (ArtifactOffload::new(blobs, agent, task), ::in_memory). Pointers carry the blob key (outputs/<name>); read and blobs fetch an artifact back. Redaction, the host path policy and the abstract-from-stored-body rule are unchanged. resolve_artifact_key replaces resolve_artifact_path: fail-closed on .., absolute and drive-prefixed names, control characters.
  • media::MediaOutput stores generated images and clips on a blob store (with_blobs, in-memory default) under generated-media/, keeps the no-replace guarantee, and reports the key as path. Local reference inputs still resolve against the workspace.
  • Deleted: the tokio::fs/rustix write paths, symlink-escape checks (nothing to follow on a key), with_render_root, relative_to_root, OffloadedArtifact::absolute_path, OffloadError::{Io,SymlinkEscape} (new Storage), and the rustix dependency. Breaking API, listed in the CHANGELOG.
  • Tests: the file-based tests are ported to the memory store, plus new ones for read-back, namespace separation, key hardening, a host-supplied store with content type, storage errors, and media no-replace and key validation.

Checks

cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets [--all-features] -- -D warnings and cargo test --workspace --all-features pass locally.

Deferred (CHANGELOG "Not yet moved")

  • artifacts::tool_results::ToolResultArtifactStore: its pointers are file paths the host file_read opens and pruning uses mtimes (blobs have none). Needs a host read-tool and age design first.
  • JSONL transcript writer/reader/FileTranscriptLocator (about 12k lines in session::transcript, path-pervasive for adoption, spend and view). Needs its own slice.
  • OpenHuman host adapters: the host must expose the blob store through its read tool (or materialise artifacts) when it re-pins; the artifact-offload prompt text in contract.rs is host-owned.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Generated images, videos, and oversized artifacts are stored in blob storage and referenced by artifact keys. Hosts can read artifacts through the provided storage interface.
    • Generated media can use host-provided storage, with content types preserved.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Artifact names that attempt path traversal or use invalid path formats are rejected. Attempts to overwrite existing media artifacts return an error.
    • Storage failures are reported consistently.
  • Documentation
    • Updated storage guidance, including requirements for reading artifacts and the components that remain file-backed.

Moved the artifact path helpers and type definitions into separate
modules to keep the artifacts code organised as it grows. No behaviour
changes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a new artifacts module with types and operations for managing
harness artifacts. This provides the foundation for storing and
retrieving artifacts produced during agent runs.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce an image tool that lets agents load image files and inspect their
metadata, giving them a way to work with image inputs. Supporting types were
added to represent the loaded image data.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds harness tool implementations for image and video media handling.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The rustix crate with the fs feature was no longer referenced by the harness, so the dependency entry was removed to keep the manifest lean.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Rework the artifact tests around the in-memory store and key-based
resolution, replacing the filesystem-root fixtures. Adds coverage for
namespace separation, read refusals, host-supplied blob stores, and
storage errors, and drops the now-unused rustix dependency from the
harness lockfile.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The blank-name rejection test now exercises a dotted double-slash name instead of a plain double slash, and the offload soft-failure test builds its offload with a path policy that marks every key under outputs as host-internal, so the refusal comes from policy rather than an unrelated cause.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The artifacts module documentation now reflects that oversized worker
results are stored as blobs on a tinystoragedrivers BlobStore rather than
written to the filesystem, so pointers carry a blob key instead of a path
and the symlink-escape caveats no longer apply.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Correct the doc comments to match the current API and log output, renaming the resolve_artifact_path reference to resolve_artifact_key and updating the write log line to describe storing on the blob store.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The changelog now records that ArtifactOffload and MediaOutput write to a
tinystoragedrivers BlobStore instead of the filesystem, with pointers carrying
blob keys and the old path-based APIs removed. The artifacts README was updated
to match the new public surface, and the not-yet-moved list now points at the
remaining path-bound transcript and tool-result stores.

📝 Walkthrough

Artifact offload and generated media now store content in blob stores and use artifact keys instead of filesystem paths. The artifact APIs, media output handling, tests, and documentation reflect this change.

Changes: Blob-Backed Outputs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Artifact key resolution and offload
crates/tinyagents-harness/src/artifacts/*, crates/tinyagents-harness/Cargo.toml, CHANGELOG.md
Artifact offload resolves validated keys, stores redacted Markdown in a BlobStore, and reads content by key. Tests now check blob contents, key validation, namespaces, and storage errors. Documentation describes the updated APIs and remaining file-backed components.
Generated media persistence and delivery
crates/tinyagents-harness/src/media/*
MediaOutput stores generated media in a blob store with content types. Image and video tools return artifact keys. Tests cover stored artifacts, host-provided storage, existing-key rejection, and invalid names.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 026dd

The change is mergeable with a documentation correction: hosts following the README may look for artifact files that no longer exist.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 026dd

The storage migration weakens the guarantee that generated media cannot replace an existing result: concurrent writers sharing storage can both succeed for the same key. Private defaults and process-local naming reduce exposure, but shared-storage isolation and recovery behavior remain dependent on host integration.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Generated-media persistence no longer atomically preserves first-writer ownership. Two same-key writers can both observe absence and then successfully perform replacement writes, leaving an earlier successful reference pointing at the later writer's bytes. The base rejected the second creation atomically. Ordinary same-process calls are protected by a shared counter, but separate processes sharing a blob scope can generate matching timestamp/counter/index keys. This is an output-integrity and failure-containment regression; deliberate cross-tenant exploitation is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller of ArtifactOffload::read can request any policy-permitted artifact key within the supplied blob handle, not only names containing that instance's agent and task identifiers. Exposure therefore follows host-selected scope and read-tool authority. Private default stores limit sharing; no cross-tenant host route or broader infrastructure authority is established by the inspected evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported integrity failure requires concurrent writers sharing a scope and producing the same media key: both absence checks succeed, both replacement writes succeed, and the last bytes become authoritative for both references. Timestamp-plus-process-local-counter naming reduces accidental collisions but does not establish uniqueness across processes. An attacker-controlled overwrite path through the public generation tools is not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The library expects scoped storage handles rather than deriving storage authority from agent/task identity. Read validation enforces artifact namespaces and host policy, not per-agent ownership. Optional write-time redaction and verbatim storage without a redactor predate this PR; read returns stored bytes without an additional redaction step.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Awaiting persistence before reporting a key contains ordinary storage failures, but it does not establish exclusive ownership or cancellation-safe recovery. Artifact replacement semantics already existed in the filesystem implementation; the newly weakened exclusive-creation guarantee applies specifically to generated media.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve media ownership with an atomic create-only storage operation or an equivalent backend reservation protocol. Globally unique names can reduce collision probability but should not substitute for an advertised no-replace guarantee.
  • proposed — Make host scope ownership and authorized parent/worker read routing explicit during adoption. Preserve the former workspace isolation deliberately rather than treating a valid key or embedded agent name as authorization.

Update the remaining filesystem wording in the README.

The "Why this exists" section still says that the convention writes an oversized result "to disk under the agent's artifact root". It also says that the result is recoverable "with an ordinary file read". After this change, the artifact is a blob key that the host reads with ArtifactOffload::read. The table still uses the word "Directory". Line 57 still describes types.rs as "std + thiserror only", but OffloadError::Storage now depends on tinystoragedrivers_core::StorageError. The new text in the "Operational constraints" section contradicts these lines.
