Summary

  • classify existing same-day tags before analyzer, dependency, and build work so issue-triggered cleanup cannot be rejected by a generated release commit
  • select authoritative exact-tag Release evidence across tag-push and guarded workflow-dispatch runs, preferring durable successful publication over stale failures
  • watch active recovery or dispatch the reviewed current release.yml from main; never rerun historical workflow code
  • make dispatch runs self-identifying, document operator behavior, and add executable same-day marker plus duplicate-refusal contracts

Production control after merge

Close #1017 once from the reviewed main SHA. The issue-triggered Auto Release run must recognize immutable v2026.8.15 before analyzer/build work, record the existing successful Release run, leave the blocker closed, and create no second tag or npm version.

Summary by Sourcery

Strengthen auto-release blocker recovery to recognize existing same-day immutable tags, prefer authoritative successful Release runs, and avoid rerunning historical workflows or rebuilding when a published release already exists.

Enhancements:

  • Add preflight detection of immutable same-day release tags to short-circuit analyzer, dependency, and build steps during issue-triggered recovery.
  • Introduce a release-run selection utility to choose the authoritative Release workflow run across tag-push and guarded workflow-dispatch events, favoring durable successes over stale failures.
  • Update auto-release recovery logic to watch active exact-tag runs or dispatch the current main-based Release workflow with explicit tag input, rather than rerunning historical runs, and to treat published tag/sha as immutable.

CI:

  • Adjust Auto Release and Release GitHub workflows to surface self-identifying dispatch runs via run-name, to pass immutable tag and SHA through environment, and to remove rerun-based recovery in favor of current-workflow dispatch and run selection.

Documentation:

  • Document the updated blocker recovery policy, including same-day tag detection, authoritative Release evidence selection, and current-workflow dispatch behavior, and link the new project-management issue for this contract.

Tests:

  • Add unit tests for the release-run selection utility and integration tests that exercise guarded issue recovery, immutable tag recognition, retry markers, and CI workflow contracts for the new behavior.

Summary by cubic

Fixes authoritative selection of immutable Release recovery runs and hardens dispatch evidence to stop stale reruns from reopening blockers. Previously issue-closure retries reran failed tag-push workflows and ran analysis/install/build before classifying existing tags; now we detect same-day tags first, select the exact-tag run across push and reviewed dispatch, and dispatch the current release.yml from main only when evidence is missing or failed.

  • Detects existing tag and SHA before analyzer, dependency install, and build; skips those steps on recovery paths.
  • Adds scripts/release/release-run-selection.mjs to choose the authoritative run: completed success wins; otherwise newest active; otherwise latest terminal. Requires default-branch identity for dispatch candidates, limits archived-log fallback to five successful same-day/default-branch dispatches, and stops at the first exact tag match.
  • release.yml marks dispatch runs via run-name; auto-release no longer uses reruns of historical workflows.
  • Updates docs/RELEASING.md; adds focused unit/integration coverage for run selection, recovery ordering, and duplicate-refusal markers.

Written for commit cf21b55. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Classify same-day blocker recovery before analyzer, dependency, and build work so a generated release commit cannot block its own cleanup path.

Select exact-tag success across push and guarded dispatch runs, watch active recovery, and dispatch the reviewed current Release workflow instead of rerunning historical code. Add executable marker, run-selection, workflow, documentation, and full PM evidence coverage.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Release recovery can currently trust a successful exact-tag run created from a non-default branch, which may cause the system to treat a release as published or watch the wrong run and skip needed recovery. The fallback log scan can also consume substantial job time when many candidates exist, so these issues should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Add a same-day immutable release tag detector and gate subsequent analyzer/build steps on its absence for issue-triggered auto-release runs.
  • Insert a Detect immutable same-day retry target step in auto-release.yml that computes today_version, finds an existing vYYYY.M.D tag, and exposes existing_tag/existing_sha via GITHUB_OUTPUT.
  • Wrap the analyzer provenance, pnpm setup, Node setup, cache restore, dependency install, and build steps with if: steps.retry_target.outputs.existing_tag == '' so they are skipped when a same-day tag already exists.
  • Extend the auto release pipeline environment to include EXISTING_RELEASE_TAG, EXISTING_RELEASE_SHA, and DEFAULT_BRANCH for downstream retry logic.
.github/workflows/auto-release.yml
tests/integration/release-automation-contract.spec.ts
tests/integration/ci-workflow-contract.spec.ts
Replace naive rerun logic with authoritative Release run selection across push and dispatch events, preferring durable success and using current workflow dispatch when needed.
  • Remove previous logic that looked up a single push-based Release run by branch and reran it; instead, fetch up to 100 Release runs and select the authoritative one via a dedicated selector script.
  • Implement release-run-selection.mjs to normalize workflow run metadata, match exact-tag candidates (push by branch/SHA or dispatch by run-name/explicit ids), and choose between successful, active, and latest terminal runs with a machine-readable JSON receipt.
  • In the auto-release retry script, use release-run-selection.mjs first on all runs, optionally enrich with dispatch evidence by scanning logs for RELEASE_TAG, then act based on the selector result: treat completed success as recovered, wait on active runs, or dispatch the reviewed current release.yml from DEFAULT_BRANCH and watch the new run.
  • Ensure published_tag/published_sha in GITHUB_OUTPUT are derived from the immutable EXISTING_RELEASE_TAG/EXISTING_RELEASE_SHA rather than recomputing from git.
.github/workflows/auto-release.yml
scripts/release/release-run-selection.mjs
tests/unit/scripts/release/release-run-selection.spec.ts
tests/integration/ci-workflow-contract.spec.ts
Strengthen issue-triggered retry contracts with explicit same-day markers, duplicate-refusal behavior, and tests that prove recovery semantics end-to-end.
  • Extend integration tests to simulate issue-triggered auto-release runs with a fake gh CLI, exercising the new recovery path for an existing successful same-day tag and verifying that only one retry marker is recorded per day.
  • Verify that a second same-day blocker closure is treated as a no-op retry (retry_already_attempted) that does not query run list or mutate releases, and that the correct outputs and logs are produced.
  • Update CI workflow contract tests to assert presence of new steps, environment variables, script fragments, and absence of legacy rerun and push-only run list usages.
tests/integration/release-automation-contract.spec.ts
tests/integration/ci-workflow-contract.spec.ts
Document the updated release policy and workflow behavior, including authoritative blocker recovery and dispatch identification.
  • Update RELEASING.md to describe how blocker closure now bypasses preparation when a same-day tag exists, selects immutable release evidence across push and guarded dispatch runs, and treats completed success as authoritative over stale failures.
  • Clarify that recovery may either watch an active exact-tag run or dispatch the reviewed current release.yml from main with the tag input, never rerunning historical workflow code, and that same-day duplicate retry attempts are refused.
  • Link the new pm-db8onn project-management artifact as the tracker for authoritative blocker-recovery run selection.
docs/RELEASING.md
.agents/pm/issues/pm-db8onn.toon
.agents/pm/history/pm-db8onn.jsonl
Make the Release workflow self-identifying for dispatch runs by encoding the tag in the run name.
  • Add a run-name to release.yml that resolves to Release for workflow_dispatch events and Release <ref_name> otherwise, enabling the selector to recognize self-identifying dispatch runs.
  • Update CI workflow contract tests to assert the presence of the new run-name line in the workflow YAML contract.
  • Ensure release-run-selection.mjs considers displayTitle "Release " as valid identity evidence for workflow_dispatch runs.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#1017 Update the Auto Release workflow so that issue-triggered recovery first detects any existing same-day release tag, skips analyzer/dependency/build stages when such a tag exists, and records the immutable published tag/SHA without creating a second tag or npm version. ✅
#1017 Implement authoritative selection of the exact-tag Release workflow run across both tag-push and workflow-dispatch events, preferring any completed successful publication over stale failures and using current-workflow dispatch from the default branch when only failed or missing evidence is available. ✅
#1017 Document and test the new blocker-recovery behavior and contracts (same-day retry marker, immutable tag detection, run selection, and guarded dispatch), ensuring the Auto Release blocked issue remains closed when a successful immutable release already exists. ✅

@unbraind Full review completed for 7adc669765eeb37de8fe7b12388c9f224c310922.

Found one issue:

  • High — Require the default-branch source for self-identifying dispatch evidence.
scripts/release/release-run-selection.mjs Line 103 accepts any workflow_dispatch run whose displayTitle is Release <tag>. It does not require headBranch === DEFAULT_BRANCH. The initial search in .github/workflows/auto-release.yml Line 201 includes runs from all branches. Therefore, a dispatch from another branch can be selected as a successful release or an active run, even though the recovery contract requires the reviewed current workflow from main. Require the configured default branch for dispatch candidates, and add a test that rejects a matching-title dispatch with a non-default headBranch.

The review also confirmed these requested behaviors:

  • Same-day tag detection occurs before analyzer, dependency installation, and build work.
  • Successful exact-tag evidence has precedence over stale failures.
  • The recovery path does not use gh run rerun.
  • New recovery dispatches use gh workflow run release.yml --ref "${DEFAULT_BRANCH}".
  • Changed shell blocks use fail-closed set -euo pipefail handling where required.
  • git diff --check completed without whitespace errors.

I did not execute repository programs or tests because the review sandbox does not permit it.

Learning: In pull request `#366` of unbraind/pm-cli, the Auto Release preflight was updated so push-mode non-dry-run releases validate the same effective token path used by the release script and fail fast when RELEASE_PAT is absent or RELEASE_PUSH_TOKEN trims to empty; tests/integration/ci-workflow-contract.spec.ts asserts this trimmed RELEASE_PUSH_TOKEN guard.

Comment thread .github/workflows/auto-release.yml Resolved
Require default-branch identity for every workflow-dispatch candidate and bound legacy archived-log inspection to five successful same-day runs, stopping at the first exact tag match.

Extend selector and workflow contracts with hostile-branch controls and record the accepted review feedback plus full verification evidence in pm-db8onn.

Please re-review exact head cf21b5568. The accepted findings are fixed: dispatch candidates must be on the explicit default branch, and legacy archived-log evidence is same-day/default-branch, capped at five, and first-match terminating.

@unbraind Full re-review completed for cf21b55687e8f31be0cc189e02661ab0007682da.

I found no new issues.

The accepted finding is fixed:

  • workflow_dispatch candidates require headBranch === DEFAULT_BRANCH.
  • The rule applies to title-based candidates and dispatchRunIds archived-log candidates.
  • Archived-log candidates require current-day creation, completed success, and the default branch.
  • Archived-log inspection evaluates at most five candidates.
  • The loop stops after the first matching RELEASE_TAG log.
  • Unit coverage rejects matching dispatch candidates from feature/unreviewed.

I also confirmed the requested recovery behavior:

  • Same-day tag detection occurs before analyzer, dependency, and build work.
  • Successful exact-tag evidence has priority over stale failures.
  • Recovery dispatches release.yml from DEFAULT_BRANCH.
  • The workflow does not use gh run rerun.
  • Relevant shell blocks use fail-closed handling.
  • git diff --check passed.

I used the prior review context to verify the repaired default-branch invariant. I did not run repository code or tests because the sandbox prohibits repository execution.

Learning: For immutable release recovery in `scripts/release/release-run-selection.mjs`, every `workflow_dispatch` candidate must have `head_branch` equal to the configured default branch. This requirement applies to both `display_title` matches and archived-log-proved `dispatchRunIds` matches.

Exact-head review closeout for cf21b5568:

  • CodeRabbit second-round artifact #5301729438 completed a full diff inspection and reported no new issues. Its trailing fair-usage notice is recorded as a platform limit, not substituted for test evidence.
  • CodeRabbit review #4943530943 produced two actionable findings; both are fixed, acknowledged on their inline threads, confirmed addressed by CodeRabbit, and both threads are resolved.
  • Sourcery review #4943511398 remained weekly-rate-limited; no actionable finding was emitted.
  • Codecov, CodSpeed, DeepScan, CodeFactor, Hound, CodeQL, Semgrep, Trivy, TruffleHog, actionlint, ShellCheck, PSScriptAnalyzer, and all repository CI gates are terminal green on the exact head.
  • Greptile did not emit an artifact or check despite explicit review requests; that absence is recorded as unavailable, not approval.

Fresh inventory: zero unresolved review threads and zero new actionable findings.
