Summary

Rebuilt on upstream/dev (7a42860) now that the base PRs #7194 and #7201 have landed via #7225. This PR now contains only the replay change, in four commits: 608e5b8 (replay), 9738e72 (CodeRabbit fixes: thinking-block anchors, anthropic_blocks shape guard), 3f66646 (every replayed run goes through appendPreface, so it keeps the signed source order) and ee3d972 (anchors keyed by occurrence). The streamed-input buffer cap is split out to #7232.

Problem. After #7194/#7201, Anthropic's server-side web_search / web_fetch reach the Claude client on the translated lane, but the client could not replay them:

  • the relayed server_tool_use carried the bridge's ws_<uuid> item id, not Anthropic's srvtoolu_… id;
  • search hits were rebuilt from url/title, so encrypted_content and page_age were lost;
  • assistantMessageToItems drops replayed server_tool_use / *_tool_result blocks (no Responses slot), so the next api.anthropic.com turn lost the exchange entirely.

Change (follow-up-turn replay only):

  1. Relay verbatim. src/adapters/anthropic.ts (parseStream) attaches the raw server_tool_use (with its streamed input) and the result block as it arrived to web_search_call_end (anthropic: { use, result }, src/types/request.ts). The bridge (sse.ts, response-json.ts) and the direct encoder (adapter-events.ts, messages.ts) put them on the web_search_call item as anthropic_blocks, and webSearchPairFromItem (src/claude/outbound.ts) returns them unchanged for all three client paths. This replaces fix(claude): relay Anthropic's server-side web_fetch results to the Claude client #7201's fetch-only fetch_result: the search and fetch branches in the adapter collapse into one, and a fetch still becomes an open_page action. fix(claude): relay Anthropic's server-side web_fetch results to the Claude client #7201's tests are unchanged and pass.
  2. Capture without touching src/claude/inbound.ts (open PR fix(claude): keep the caller's 1h cache TTL on the translated lane #7176 edits it). replayedAnthropicServerBlocks in src/claude/inbound-content-options.ts, a pure function next to declaredAnthropicServerTools, collects each run of server blocks in the raw request's assistant messages, keyed by the next client-visible block (call:<tool_use id>, text:<text>, thinking:<signature> or redacted:<data>) plus that anchor's occurrence index in the conversation, as <anchor>#<n>. All of these anchors survive the Responses translation verbatim, and an identical text that recurs in history keeps its own run. A run is kept only when every server_tool_use has a srvtoolu_ id and its result, and every search hit carries encrypted_content. Anything else stays dropped, as today (fix(claude): carry typed web_search/web_fetch to an Anthropic target on the translated lane #7194's "pair without encrypted_content never reaches Anthropic" test still holds). The caller's cache_control on these blocks is dropped, as for the declared tools.
  3. Out-of-body carrier, the same plumbing fix(claude): carry typed web_search/web_fetch to an Anthropic target on the translated lane #7194 uses for anthropicServerTools: claude-messages.ts → core-options.ts → request-prepare.ts (only for inboundWire: "anthropic") → parsed._anthropicServerReplay, deleted on routed compaction in response-effects.ts.
  4. Re-insertion. messagesToAnthropicFormat splices each run back into the assistant message ahead of its anchor, only when usesNativeAnthropicEndpoint(provider). The adapter counts each anchor's occurrences the same way and looks up <anchor>#<n>. Every replayed run goes through appendPreface, so server blocks keep the signed source order: after preceding text and before the tool_use group, matching Anthropic's order. The lookup is stateless across builds, so a failover rebuild gets the same result.

Unchanged. GPT legs and third-party Anthropic-compatible targets never read _anthropicServerReplay, so their bodies are unchanged. Sidecar-produced searches carry no anthropic_blocks and render as before.

Out of scope (follow-ups, each needs a maintainer call):

  • Citations on text. citations_delta (web_search_result_location with encrypted_index) is not relayed, so the replayed text has no citations. Anthropic accepts that, but it is not byte-faithful. It needs a new relay path (~40-60 lines).
  • Deferred search resume. fix(claude): carry typed web_search/web_fetch to an Anthropic target on the translated lane #7194 opens the cell at the result, so a server_tool_use deferred beside a client tool_use never reaches the client and cannot be resumed. Fixing this reverses that decision and needs a "pending server call" item shape.
  • pause_turn resume. pause_turn is relayed as max_tokens, and messagesToAnthropicFormat appends a (continue) user turn after an assistant tail, which is not the documented resume shape.
  • Translator budget. encrypted_content is KB-scale per hit. The carried runs are not charged to budget.chargeRetained.

Verification

  • Red/green: the replay cases in tests/claude-integration/claude-translated-server-tools.test.ts were written before the src/ change and failed without it.
    • web_search before text. Turn 1 is a mocked Anthropic SSE with server_tool_use + web_search_tool_result (encrypted_content, page_age) + text. The client's turn-1 blocks, rebuilt from its SSE, are replayed as the turn-2 assistant message. The turn-2 api.anthropic.com wire messages[1].content is [server_tool_use srvtoolu_1 {query}, the verbatim result block, text]. The bodies for a third-party Anthropic-compatible target and for a GPT leg contain no srvtoolu_1 and keep the text.
    • web_fetch before a client tool_use. The wire content is [server_tool_use srvtoolu_f web_fetch {url}, verbatim web_fetch_tool_result, tool_use].
    • Thinking-block anchors, the anthropic_blocks shape guard, signed source order and a repeated identical text that keeps its own run (occurrence-indexed anchors) are each covered.
  • On ee3d972: bun x tsc --noEmit clean; bun run structure:check passed; claude-translated-server-tools, test-layout and file-size-ratchet tests: 27 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun run test:changed (Bun 1.4.3): 42582 pass, 7 fail. The 7 failures are the laptop-only cases that also fail on a clean upstream/dev: connected-client runtime probe scope (1), resolveCodexRuntime missing-version selection (1), real PATH Bun validation (2) and the Node launcher PATH fallback (3). None of them touch these files.
  • Docs: structure/providers-and-adapters.md (anthropic adapter row), structure/clients/claude-desktop.md (inbound-content-options) and the English docs-site Claude Code guide (tools mapping row).
  • Not run: full bun run test, and any live Anthropic request. The ^srvtoolu_ id check and the encrypted_content requirement on replay come from the docs and have not been verified live.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

📝 Walkthrough

The change preserves Anthropic server-tool use/result blocks through Responses translation and replays eligible pairs from Claude history on later requests to api.anthropic.com. Search and fetch results use a shared event path. Tests and documentation cover replay behavior and routing.

Changes: Anthropic server-tool replay

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect replay metadata
src/types/request.ts, src/types.ts, src/claude/inbound-content-options.ts, src/server/claude-messages.ts, src/server/responses/*
Claude history parsing collects complete server-tool use/result runs and keys them to following tool, text, thinking, or redacted-thinking blocks. Request handling passes the replay map into parsed request state for Anthropic-inbound requests. Routed compaction removes that state.
Replay blocks and process results
src/adapters/anthropic.ts
The adapter matches replay blocks by anchor occurrence and sends them only to api.anthropic.com. It parses server-tool inputs as objects and emits search and fetch results with their original Anthropic blocks.
Carry blocks through Responses translation
src/protocols/encoders/*, src/bridge/*, src/claude/outbound.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-translated-server-tools.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/claude-code.md, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md
The event, bridge, and encoder paths carry Anthropic blocks as anthropic_blocks on web_search_call items. The outbound path reuses valid blocks and rebuilds pairs when stored blocks are malformed. Integration tests cover replay targets, original IDs and positions, ordering, and fallback. Documentation describes replay scope; the Claude Desktop guide also records output-cap preservation and cache-retention selection rules.

Live check against the real Anthropic API (OAuth pool account, combo/waterfall → claude-opus-5-5, web-search sidecar disabled so the typed tool reaches Anthropic), dev + #7194 + #7201 + this PR: turn 1 returned server_tool_use (srvtoolu_… id) + web_search_tool_result with encrypted_content + text; the client replayed that assistant turn verbatim in turn 2 and Anthropic answered 200 end_turn, citing the sources from the replayed results. So the srvtoolu id / encrypted_content round trip is accepted on the translated lane.

Thanks for catching the anchor ambiguity in #7225. Fixed in 1aef925: the extractor and the adapter now both count each anchor's occurrences across the conversation and match on <anchor>#<n>, so an identical earlier text can no longer take a later turn's run. Regression test an identical earlier text does not take a later turn's exchange fails on the previous head (the exchange landed in the first assistant message) and passes now; the server-tools file is 16/16 and typecheck is clean.

… lane

The Claude client never held a replayable copy of an Anthropic server-side
search or fetch: the relayed server_tool_use carried the bridge's ws_ id,
search hits lost encrypted_content and page_age, and the inbound translation
dropped the replayed blocks, so the next api.anthropic.com turn lost them.

- adapter attaches the raw server_tool_use + result block to
web_search_call_end; bridge, direct encoder and Claude outbound relay them
  verbatim as anthropic_blocks (replaces fetch_result)
- replayedAnthropicServerBlocks collects complete srvtoolu_ pairs from the
raw request, keyed by the following tool_use id or text, and carries them
  out of body like anthropicServerTools
- messagesToAnthropicFormat re-inserts them in place for api.anthropic.com
only; GPT legs and third-party endpoints are unchanged

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
…opic_blocks

- A server-tool run followed by a thinking or redacted_thinking block was
dropped. Key it by the thinking signature / redacted data, which survive
translation, so the adapter re-inserts it ahead of that block and the
  original order holds.
- webSearchPairFromItem trusted anthropic_blocks' shape; a malformed value
threw (missing use) or produced an "undefined" id. Fall back to the
rebuilt pair unless use/result carry string id/name/type.

lidge-jun#7143 replays signed assistant turns from originalOrder, so replayed pairs
must go through appendPreface like every other preface block.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
A replayed run was keyed on its anchor text/id across the whole
conversation and consumed at the first match, so an identical earlier
assistant text took a later turn's exchange. Both sides now count each
anchor's occurrences and match on <anchor>#<n>.

fetch_result; without this branch a translated continuation reusing it
turned the fetch into an empty-query web_search pair.

Thanks for the occurrence-indexed anchor fix. #7194 and #7201 (this PR's parents) landed on dev in 300e426 via #7225; this one was held out of that bundle because the earlier anchor could relocate server-tool exchanges into an earlier assistant turn. With your fix it is queued for a re-review and carry on top of current dev in the next round.

Occurrence indexes still misassigned runs when an earlier assistant turn
used string content: capture skipped it, translation kept it, and replay
shifted every later run of that text by one. Capture now counts every
assistant anchor, string content included, and drops any run whose anchor
repeats; the adapter uses each remaining unique anchor once. A repeated
anchor degrades to the pre-replay behaviour (dropped), never a wrong owner.

Thanks for the counterexample in #7236 (earlier string-content turn + repeated anchors). Fixed in 53a3ca2 by removing the guess instead of refining it. Capture now counts every assistant anchor, string content included, and drops any run whose anchor repeats anywhere in the history. The adapter uses each remaining (unique) anchor once. A repeated anchor therefore degrades to the pre-replay behaviour (exchange dropped), never to a wrong owner; tool_use ids and thinking signatures are unique in practice, so most runs still replay.

Regression a repeated anchor drops its run instead of guessing an owner builds your shape: an earlier content: "Bun shipped." turn, then thinking / search / Bun shipped. / search / Bun shipped. / signed thinking / search / two Read calls. It asserts the earlier turn gets nothing, the text-anchored runs are dropped, and only the run anchored on the unique call toolu_a replays, in signed order. It fails on the previous head f6e0f74 and passes now. Server-tools, ratchet and structure tests are 77/77; tsc and structure:check are clean.
