Summary

This promotes the frozen dev candidate 7761e04edbaccb3d88e9edf910b639d271ec661c to main as stable 2.88.0. The promotion head b0d4d18f1c merges in main ancestry with the ours strategy, and its tree is exactly the candidate tree (29a50e71d1). The candidate already sets the version to 2.88.0 in package.json, desktop tauri.conf.json, and Cargo.toml. The dev pre-move is #7263 (dev → 2.89.0), merged before this promotion.

2.88.0 fixes the 2.87.0 startup regression and carries the fixes merged since 2.87.0:

Verification

Main-review disposition. Promotion from dev to main and npm releases are maintainer-controlled (MAINTAINERS.md). The project owner authorized this release, so the promotion merges with owner authority (--admin). The PR targets main deliberately, so an enforce-target wrong_base failure is expected (as in #7094, #7110 and #7249).

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

The carry-attribution window is capped at 80 characters and could cut a reference in half. The #7223 subject "carry ... (#7195, #6767" was read as #676, an unrelated PR, so the hygiene gate demanded a co-author trailer for the wrong person (seen on the 2.87.0 promotion #7249). When no sentence boundary falls inside the window, the window now finishes a number that started before the cap. Sentence and newline bounds, qualified-reference handling, and the exclusion of references that start after the cap are unchanged.
#7230, #7231, #7232, #7233) (#7236)

Carries four vadymhimself follow-ups onto dev:

- #7230: the combo sibling check peeks the round-robin ring without advancing it, while the failed account's cooldown is still recorded.
- #7231: a Codex account move after a 402 is recorded as quota recovery, separate from 429 rate recovery, through persistence, metrics, analytics and Logs labels.
- #7232: the Anthropic server-tool input buffer is capped on the incoming fragment (4,096 code units), so one oversized fragment cannot exceed the bound.
- #7233: refused-then-served usage rows are priced from the served attempt, and client cancels keep an unknown cost. A usage-less refusal never changes a row's pricing classification. A row with a leading refusal summarizes exactly like the same row without it, under dev's existing partial-cost contract.

Co-authored-by: Vadym O <bolein95@gmail.com>
When the Codex startup intent gate is closed (Codex OFF, a sibling, or a hub without local integration), startup now skips the two native-Codex service-manager ownership inspections and native-main preparation. On Windows those inspections run synchronous Task Scheduler/service children before the runtime record is published, and the disabled lifecycle never uses their answers. Enabled startup keeps both ownership decisions, including the fresh second listing that detects a concurrent installer. ACL hardening, live-owner discovery and startup deadlines are unchanged. The claim is limited to removing unnecessary probes; the reported 45-second owner-start timeout is not shown to be resolved.
… lane (carry #7205) (#7251)

Carries vadymhimself #7205, including its newest head 53a3ca2. On the translated Claude lane, an Anthropic server-tool exchange (web search/fetch) from history is replayed only into the assistant turn that produced it. An anchor that occurs exactly once replays. An ambiguous (repeated) anchor drops the exchange, so a later identical turn can no longer take over an earlier exchange. A result is replayed only after its matching call with the same id and type earlier in the turn. A call must carry a plain-object input with a nonblank query or url. Orphan results never synthesize a call. Anything that cannot be proven valid is dropped, which is the pre-#7205 behaviour. The anchor turn's text is preserved byte-for-byte.

successCostUsd passed the aggregate `unreported` status to
estimateRequestCost, so a usage-less 429 before a measured send stayed
unpriced in /api/routing-analytics while /api/usage priced it. It now
reuses computeEntryCost, the same attempt-aware pricing.

📝 Walkthrough

This release adds Anthropic replay and thinking-signature recovery, 128-socket WebSocket reclamation, OpenCode Zen routing updates, loopback startup checks, HTTP 402 account recovery classification, usage-pricing changes, and related documentation and tests.

Changes: Anthropic replay and recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Anthropic replay and recovery
src/adapters/*, src/server/responses/*, src/web-search/*, src/images/loop.ts, src/claude/*
Anthropic server-tool exchanges can be validated, captured, replayed, and filtered. Thinking-signature recovery can retry eligible HTTP and stream refusals with bounded budgets and rejection memos.
Recovery validation
tests/responses/*, tests/adapters/*, tests/claude-integration/*
Tests cover replay ownership, malformed exchanges, recovery fences, selective memos, cancellation, budgets, and media or hosted-search retries.

Runtime and provider behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
WebSocket admission
src/codex/*, src/server/index/websocket-handler.ts, src/server/responses/response-tool-ownership.ts
Responses WebSockets track activity and reclaim the least-recently-used eligible idle connection at 128 active sockets. Tool ownership is preserved across response replacements.
Startup and lifecycle
src/cli/*, src/server/index.ts, src/server/lifecycle.ts
Cross-home discovery checks loopback-family availability. Codex-disabled startup skips ownership inspection. Shared turn leases detach completed controllers without releasing active parent ownership.
Provider routing and translation
src/types/opencode-zen.ts, src/config/opencode-zen-upgrade.ts, src/adapters/google.ts, src/bridge/*
OpenCode Zen routes Claude models to Anthropic Messages and Gemini models to the applicable native Google API. Gemini progress history is reduced before tool calls. Anthropic server blocks replace the former fetch payload in web-search events.

Accounting and support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Account recovery and usage
src/oauth/*, src/usage/*, src/routing/analytics.ts, src/server/responses/core-codex-account.ts
HTTP 402 account moves use oauth-account-402 and quota-exhausted. Usage pricing distinguishes measured attempts and HTTP 499 cancellations.
Documentation and release metadata
package.json, desktop/src-tauri/*, docs-site/*, structure/*
Versions change to 2.88.0. Documentation describes the new routing, recovery, WebSocket, startup, usage, and integration behavior.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b0d4d

The release adds Anthropic thinking-signature recovery, but very long Claude sessions may keep failing with signature-binding errors instead of recovering. Smaller issues can misreport budget refusals as retryable errors and can attach replayed search blocks to the wrong turn. Address the recovery fallback before releasing.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not create anchors from absent identifiers. "thinking:undefined" can attach a server-tool run to an unrelated turn.

The anchor key uses String(block.signature), String(block.id), String(block.text) and String(block.data). A client thinking block without a signature therefore produces the anchor thinking:undefined. On the consumer side, messagesToAnthropicFormat in src/adapters/anthropic.ts Line 811 calls replayed(\thinking:${t.signature}`)for everyOcxThinkingContent. The same thinking:undefined` key matches any thinking part with no signature, such as reasoning summaries, raw reasoning from another provider path, or proxy-built history.

The uniqueness check on Line 152 counts only raw client blocks. Suppose one unsigned thinking block in the Claude history follows a valid server_tool_use + web_search_tool_result run. Then the first unsigned OcxThinkingContent in the translated context receives that run, even if it belongs to a different assistant turn. The request then carries a srvtoolu_ exchange in the wrong place. Anthropic can reject it, or it corrupts the conversation order. The protection relies on the anchor naming exactly one owner, and that does not hold here.

Only create an anchor when the identifying field is a non-empty string.

Update anchor creation in the block-processing logic to create keys only when
the identifying field is a non-empty string. Apply this to tool_use IDs, text,
thinking signatures, and redacted-thinking data; leave the anchor undefined when
the field is absent or invalid so unrelated content cannot share an “undefined”
anchor.

Keep the 429 identity when the continuation's signature-recovery refetch throws SendBudgetExhaustedError.

The retry callback at Line 736-739 calls fetchContinuation("opaque-blob-rejection") inside the wrap generator. If the shared budget refuses that send, the SendBudgetExhaustedError comes out of yield* and reaches the outer catch at Line 741. That catch only maps ResponseBodyInactivityError and abort. Every other error becomes Provider continuation parse failed: request send budget exhausted ..., with no status, errorType or code.

The PR added this mapping in continuationFailureEvent (Line 165-168). Its status is 429 with rate_limit_error, request_send_budget_exhausted and retryable: false. The main delivery path keeps that identity, and the test a local send-budget refusal retains 429 identity after refetch aborts its upstream signal checks it. On the empty-completion retry path, the client gets a status-less error instead. The bridge then classifies it from message text, and Codex can treat it as a retryable 5xx. That retry amplification is what the budget exists to stop. AdmissionModelDeniedError loses its identity the same way.

Update the error handling around the signature-recovery callback in
adapterExchange.thinkingSignatureRecovery.wrap so SendBudgetExhaustedError and
AdmissionModelDeniedError from fetchContinuation retain their structured
continuation failure identity via continuationFailureEvent instead of becoming a
status-less parse error; preserve the existing handling for other errors.

Fall back to the blanket policy when an opaque set was serialized but could not be collected.

prepare refuses recovery when a real response has no fingerprint set (Line 47: if (response && !rejectedPayloads?.size) return false;). However, rejectedAnthropicPayloads(response) also returns undefined when the request did serialize opaque history and capture gave up:

  • In src/adapters/anthropic-rejection-memo.ts Line 39, capture returns at 257 distinct digests.
  • In the same file at Line 26, Line 28, Line 30 and Line 33, capture returns on a malformed message, a malformed block, or a malformed value.
  • In the same file at Line 47, capture swallows a TranslatorBudgetExceededError. Its own comment says "An uncollectable set keeps the legacy blanket policy."

In these cases the code does not use a blanket policy. It skips recovery. A long Claude session with more than 256 signed thinking or redacted blocks therefore gets the binding 400 on every turn and has no recovery. Because the signatures stay in history, the next request fails the same way. These are the sessions most likely to cross a conversation binding, for example after compaction or a client restart.

The guard has to tell "this send carried no opaque state" apart from "this send carried opaque state that we could not enumerate". One way:

  • In captureAnthropicRejectionPayloads, record a request-level sentinel such as "uncollectable" when the loop ends early after it has seen at least one opaque block. Bind that sentinel to the response.
  • In prepare, return false only when the response is bound with "no opaque blocks". On the sentinel, leave rejectedPayloads as undefined so the code takes the existing prepareOpaqueBlobRecovery blanket branch at Line 58-61.

Add a regression test that sends 257 distinct signatures, receives a binding-rejection 400, and expects one stripped resend.

Update captureAnthropicRejectionPayloads and prepare so a real response with no
opaque state remains distinguishable from one whose opaque payloads could not be
collected; preserve the latter as an uncollectable result and let prepare use
the existing blanket branch in prepareOpaqueBlobRecovery. Add a regression test
for 257 distinct signatures that verifies a binding-rejection response triggers
one stripped resend.

Require the Responses rate-limit metric to exist.

If the metrics snapshot omits the recovery="rate_limit" series, Line 367 passes because ?? true accepts the missing result. The test then cannot detect that telemetry regression. Require a Responses-protocol series with value zero, and scope the quota assertion on Line 366 to the same protocol.

Update the recovery metric assertions in the test so both the quota and
rate-limit series are scoped to protocol="responses". Remove the fallback that
accepts a missing rate-limit series, requiring the Responses rate-limit metric
to exist and end with value zero.
