Summary

  • Use the existing surrogate-safe prefix helper for single-result query and answer truncation, so a UTF-16 boundary cannot split an emoji or another surrogate pair.
  • Cover plain and structured output, a pair that straddles the limit, and a pair that ends exactly at the limit with and without truncation. The English and Korean sidecar guides state the guarantee as surrogate-pair preservation; sequences joined by a zero-width joiner can still be cut between their parts.

Verification

Windows, Bun 1.4.4; head 157d1de79b7ce117adca07a4c0643c4668817309, rebased on dev 42549ba1b00a7fe792f0c1d87771845ca538c472 after dev gained a test-layout roster entry that conflicted; only the roster line in the first commit changed.

  • bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/web-search/fix-search-unicode-clamp.test.ts tests/web-search/format-result.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000: 54 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check 42549ba1b00a7fe792f0c1d87771845ca538c472...HEAD: passed.

CodeRabbit review follow-up: narrowed the documented guarantee in both locales, added the exact-limit truncation case, and documented clamp.

The full suite was not run. The documentation build was not rerun after the prose edits. Focused subsystem and repository guards were run serially on the shared Windows host; full-suite and cross-platform coverage remain for CI.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
  • I pushed my PR to the latest dev commit.
  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Long web-search queries and answers no longer truncate between the two halves of a UTF-16 surrogate pair. Existing length limits and truncation indicators are unchanged; multi-character sequences such as ZWJ emoji may still be split.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the sidecar guides and search documentation to clarify the truncation behavior.

Walkthrough

Web-search query and answer truncation now uses surrogate-safe prefixes. Existing limits and truncation markers remain unchanged. Tests cover plain and structured results, including emoji at truncation boundaries. English and Korean guides and search documentation describe the behavior.

Changes: Web-search Unicode truncation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Safe prefixes and behavior coverage
src/web-search/format-result.ts, tests/web-search/fix-search-unicode-clamp.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout-adapters.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, structure/data-planes/search.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/sidecars.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/ko/guides/sidecars.md
clamp and safeQuery use safePrefix to avoid ending a truncated prefix inside a surrogate pair. Tests check plain and structured results, truncation markers, and emoji at the limits. Documentation describes the behavior and notes that joined emoji sequences may still be split.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(search): preserve Unicode when truncating single results" matches the main change. The PR makes single-result query and answer truncation in src/web-search/format-result.ts use the existing surrogate-safe prefix helper, so surrogate pairs are not split. The title is concise, specific, and follows a conventional commit style. It does not mention the documentation update or the new tests, which is acceptable because it is not the primary change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

- Line 287: Update the search-query and answer truncation description in the
sidecars documentation to promise only surrogate-pair preservation, not complete
Unicode character or multi-code-point emoji preservation. Make the corresponding
change in both the English and Korean sidecars guides so their behavior
descriptions stay in sync.

Review comments at @tests/web-search/fix-search-unicode-clamp.test.ts:
- Around line 15-16: Add a truncation-boundary test alongside the existing
exact-limit test for formatWebSearchResult: append a suffix after each emoji to
force truncation, then assert the answer retains the complete emoji pair at the
limit and includes the truncation marker, and the query retains its complete
pair before its truncation marker.

Carried into dev by #7821 (squash merge 504417f), which lands this change together with the other small fixes from this series. The carrier credits the original author with a Co-authored-by trailer. Closing as carried. Thank you for the fix!
