Infer generic method arguments from instance data sources - #7630
Instance method data sources now infer generic test method arguments from their declared rows. Generic classes retain static and instance sources sharing the same concrete instantiation, retry inference after class arguments close, and report failed sources once without hiding successful pairings. Explicit method types retain precedence.
Extracts the instance-source portion of preserved PR #7620. Class-retry regressions use scalar nullable rows to keep this deliverable independent of the sibling tuple-conversion work. Includes generator snapshots and engine regressions for declaration order, constructor-inferred and explicit classes, constraints, and sources already covered by parameter inference.
Validation:
Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip.
22 separately filtered fixture runs across generated and reflection modes: expected totals/outcomes verified, including intentional failures and constraint messages.
Engine test project net10.0 build: passed with no warnings. Engine suite left to CI as instructed.
Only .NET 10 runtime is installed; other target frameworks left to CI.
Improved generic test discovery when instance data sources are combined with inferred or explicit method and class types.
Preserved instance-source rows across different source declaration orders and handled sources that require class types before method types can be inferred.
Improved reporting of generic type-inference and constraint failures, including associating relevant class rows with failures.
Tests
Added regression coverage for generic and non-generic classes, mixed data sources, explicit type arguments, and constraint violations.
The source generator now infers generic method types from instance method data sources, including after generic class types become concrete. Reflection discovery joins instance sources to explicit generic test instantiations. Regression tests cover source combinations, inference, and constraint failures.

Summary
Source collection and instantiation joining src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7222/GenericInstanceSourceTests.cs
The source generator joins instance method data sources with matching generated instantiations. Reflection discovery also includes instance sources when resolving explicit generic test types. Tests cover explicit types, mixed source declaration orders, and source-row collisions.
Closed-class inference and failure reporting src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/InstanceMethodTypeInferenceTests.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7222Tests.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7222/InstanceSourceConstraintViolationTests.cs
Inference substitutes concrete class type arguments into source row and method parameter types, then retries eligible sources. Sources that remain uninferred are reported with source and class-row information. Tests cover inferred types and constraint failures.
TUnit issue 7351 describes missing generic method type inference from instance data source rows in source-generated mode. This change adds instance-source recognition and inference in the source generator.

Explanation
The PR addresses the coding requirements in [#7628]. TestMetadataGenerator.cs retains instance-source rows for inference, applies class type arguments during matching, retries unresolved sources after class inference, joins explicit method types with existing instantiations, and reports uninferred sources through shared failure handling. ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs preserves matching instance rows and declaration order. The added generator and engine regressions cover both declaration orders, explicit and constructor-inferred classes, constraints, source pairing, and failed-source reporting. The reported generator and targeted fixture runs passed.

Review of #7630: infer generic method arguments from instance data sources
I read the generator diff and sampled the snapshot. I did not build or run anything. The approach looks sound. Instance sources now go through the same inference path as [MethodDataSource], explicit [GenerateGenericTest] types keep precedence, and failures are reported once. The tests cover the difficult cases: declaration order, constructor-inferred classes, explicit classes, constraints, and sources already covered by parameter inference.
Maintainability suggestions (not blockers)
The check AttributeClass?.Name is "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" now appears in at least five places, along with the !HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod) guard. Please extract a helper such as IsMethodStyleDataSource(attr), or add one to GenericMethodInferencePolicy. Today a future source type (or a typo) has to be fixed at every site, and a missed site would cause generator drift.
ReportUninferredClassSource is a local function that closes over results, hasExplicitMethodTypes and compilation, and it deduplicates by scanning results with LINQ. It runs once per source per class, so it is not a hot path. Even so, making it a static method that takes the results explicitly would make the ordering assumption ("check after all pairings") easier to see and test.
InferTypesFromMethodDataSource returns null for an instance source with explicit generic test types. That is the same result as "could not infer", so the two cases cannot be told apart. Callers now rely on this to preserve reflection-mode behaviour, which is easy to break. A short comment at the call sites, or a distinct return, would help.
CloseClassType is applied to each parameter type inside the tuple loop. Hoisting it is cheap and avoids repeated substitution in a generator that runs on every compile.
Validation
The PR notes say the engine suite is left to CI. Please confirm the Issue7222Tests engine tests pass in both generated and reflection modes there, since the AGENTS.md rule that the two modes behave identically applies to this change.
Overall the change is correct as far as I can tell and well tested. Items 1 and 2 are worth doing before merge to keep the generator maintainable.
Fixed the blocking explicit-type collision in abc9c89. Explicit instance sources now join an existing class/method entry even when closed-class static inference created it first. Added explicit-class and constructor-inferred-class regressions, generator snapshots, and both-mode Issue7222Tests coverage.
Validation: full net10.0 generator suite passed (350 passed, 1 existing skip). Each new fixture passed 2/2 in generated mode and 2/2 in reflection mode (8 passing executions total). Fixture project build passed. Issue7222Tests itself remains for CI as required by AGENTS.md; I cannot confirm that suite's results before CI runs.
Claude's four nonblocking suggestions are dispositioned as follows: retain the existing source checks and local failure-reporting function in this focused correctness fix (1–2); the explicit-instance null behavior is documented both in InferTypesFromMethodDataSource and now at the joining call path (3); retain the current substitution placement since this PR makes no measured generator performance claim (4). These suggestions do not identify an additional correctness defect and do not block this PR. The ordering comment remains beside the post-pairing failure check.
The new nullable fixture requires a narrow TUnit0001 suppression; that analyzer limitation is recorded on #7573.
Review of #7630 (instance method data source inference)
I read the generator diff (TestMetadataGenerator.cs) and skimmed the tests and snapshot. I did not build the change or run the tests. The scope matches #7628, and the engine regressions and snapshot cover the interesting cases: declaration order, class retry, explicit types, and constraint messages.
Suggestions
Repeated attribute-name matching.Name is "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" now appears in at least four places, and == "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" in several more. A small helper such as IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) (and IsInstanceMethodDataSource) would give one place to update. That matters because the next source kind is easy to add in some branches and miss in others, which would make the two modes diverge silently. The project rules require identical metadata-collection behaviour between source-generator and reflection modes.
JoinDeferredDataSources relies on a comment for its contract. It now unconditionally adds every InstanceMethodDataSource to the existing instantiation, and the comment says it is "called only for explicit method types". If a later caller invokes it on an inferred path, the same row could be added twice, depending on whether AddRow dedupes. Either assert or guard on HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod) inside the helper, or confirm that AddRow is idempotent and say so.
ReportUninferredClassSource is a large closure. It is entangled with results, AddMethodViolation and AreSameAttribute, and it does an ordering-sensitive "any result already runs this source" check after all pairings. That logic is hard to test in isolation. Consider extracting it into a static method that takes results explicitly, so the post-pairing reconciliation reads as its own step.
The nullable Types tuple element carries two meanings. In methodSources, Types == null now means "a MethodDataSource that needs the class types before it can infer". Before, it meant a null-source or IInfersType case. A named record or an explicit NeedsClassTypes flag would be clearer than overloading null.
Mixed use of InferTypesFromMethodDataSource. The early return null for instance sources with explicit types sits in a general-purpose inference helper. Callers cannot tell "not inferable" from "deliberately skipped", and that distinction drives which diagnostics appear. Moving that check to the call sites, or returning a distinct result, would keep the helper's meaning simple.
Positives
The error text is factored into CreateUninferredTypeArgumentFailure and DescribeDataSource, and the duplicated local function is gone.
Failures are reported once and do not hide successful pairings. The test matrix is thorough.
None of the points above look blocking. I would still like CI to confirm the reflection-mode runs for the new Bugs/_7222 fixtures, since the engine tests are not run locally.
Pushed 9675d2d to fix the reflection collision reported by Codex. The factory-tuple fixture reproduces the loss (2 discovered tests before the fix) and passes 4/4 in each discovery mode afterward, covering both declaration orders. The affected generator snapshot test passes after reviewing and accepting only the two new generated entries. The engine test project builds with 0 warnings and errors; the engine suite remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Disposition of Claude's latest nonblocking suggestions:
Retain the current attribute checks in this focused correctness fix, as previously dispositioned; no additional incorrect classification was identified.
Verified that InstantiationData.AddRow checks IsSpecificMethodDataSource, which checks both the primary row and ContainsSameAttribute(AdditionalArgumentsAttributes, attribute). Joining an already scoped method row is idempotent. All three JoinDeferredDataSources call sites are in explicit method-type pairing paths.
Retain the local failure reconciliation function and its post-pairing placement; extracting it would be a separate refactor without a behavior fix.
Retain the nullable tuple representation for this change; the explicit-type instance-source skip is documented at the joining call and inference helper. A named state representation would be broader than the reported collision.
Retain the documented early return: instance sources intentionally use explicit method types. Reflection now preserves those same rows when a static inference collides with explicit types.
Native AOT publish (net10.0, macOS arm64) succeeded, and the published fixture passed 4/4. Existing build/restore warnings are tracked by #7410 and #7412; existing fixture preservation warnings are tracked by #7493 and #7452. No new reflection member access was introduced.
The PR remains draft pending fresh review of this head. All existing review threads are resolved; current-head Claude review and analysis checks are running.
Review of #7630 (instance-source generic inference)
I read the generator and reflection-collector changes and skimmed the snapshot and test additions. I did not build or run anything. I found no blocking correctness bugs.
What looks good
Generated and reflection modes are kept in step. The generator now treats InstanceMethodDataSource like MethodDataSource in the bucketing, duplicate-join, and constraint-violation paths. ReflectionTestDataCollector defers instance sources so they join the explicit-method-type instantiation in declaration order.
Extracting CreateUninferredTypeArgumentFailure and DescribeDataSource from local functions into shared helpers removes duplication between the initial and class-retry failure paths.
Retrying inference after class arguments close (CloseClassType / SubstituteTypeParameters) is a sensible way to handle sources like TClass feeding T?. Reporting an uninferred source once per closed class also avoids duplicate failures.
The tests cover the awkward cases: declaration order, constructor-inferred versus explicit class types, constraints, and sources already covered by parameter inference.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod) re-scans MethodAttributes with LINQ and is now called from several places, including inside TryAddInstantiation and InferTypesFromMethodDataSource. Compute it once per test method (as hasExplicitMethodTypes already is in the class-generic branch) and pass or capture it. This is a generator hot path.
The "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" name check now appears in at least five places. A small IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) helper would stop the two names drifting apart the next time a variant is added.
In ReportUninferredClassSource, results.First(...) after AddMethodViolation relies on that call having just created or found the entry. This is correct today, but have AddMethodViolation return the entry so the lookup isn't repeated and can't throw if the logic changes.
The JoinDeferredDataSources comment says it is "called only for explicit method types". An assertion or a parameter would make that invariant checked rather than just documented.
Overall this is solid work, and the snapshot and engine regression coverage is thorough. The CI engine tests are still the real check for reflection-mode parity.
Current-head Claude and Codex reviews are positive for 9675d2d, and both correctness threads are fixed and resolved.
Disposition of Claude's latest nonblocking suggestions: retain the existing explicit-type scans and attribute matching in this focused correctness change; caching or extracting them would be a separate refactor, with no measured performance regression identified. The violation lookup is safe because AddMethodViolation either finds the concrete class's violation entry or adds it before returning. Retain the existing JoinDeferredDataSources contract and call sites, as previously verified and dispositioned. None identifies a remaining correctness defect.
Promoting to ready so CI can validate the engine regressions. Auto-merge must wait for the fresh ready-for-review Claude run to pass and its review to be read.
Review of #7630 (instance-source generic inference)
I read the generator and reflection-collector changes in the diff. I did not build or run any tests.
Overall: the change is coherent. Generated and reflection modes now treat InstanceMethodDataSource the same way. Explicit [GenerateGenericTest] types keep precedence. Failed sources are reported once, and a successful pairing is not hidden by a failed one. The ReportUninferredClassSource check runs after all pairings, so declaration order can't add a false failure. That is the right design.
Concerns, none blocking:
Fragile invariant in JoinDeferredDataSources. The comment says the helper "is called only for explicit method types". The new loop adds every InstanceMethodDataSource to existing with no guard. If a future caller reaches it on an inferred path, those rows would be added twice, because the inferred path already joins them in CollectConcreteInstantiations. Either assert the explicit-types precondition or have AddRow ignore a source it already holds.
Repeated attribute-name checks."MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" and !HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod) now appear in at least five places. HasExplicitGenericTestTypes rescans MethodAttributes on each call. Add a small IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) helper and compute hasExplicitGenericTestTypes once per method. That keeps the two modes from drifting and is cheaper in generator hot paths.
Mixed return contract.InferTypesFromMethodDataSource returns null both for "cannot infer" and for "instance source with explicit types, skip". Callers cannot tell these apart, and uninferredClassSources relies on that. A small result enum or two named methods would make the intent explicit.
Reflection-side coverage. The reflection change is small, with one new case in ReflectionTestDataCollector. The engine regressions in Issue7222Tests cover it, and CI should confirm that both modes give the same outcomes.
Nothing here needs to hold up the merge. Item 1 is worth a quick hardening pass.

Run 41976994960 has completed successfully on 9675d2d, so the earlier workflow wait is cleared. All current CI checks passed, including both Ubuntu and Windows Engine tests and AOT jobs, and the macOS pipeline. Current-head Codex reports completed with no findings; Claude's ready-for-review review explicitly reports no blockers. Both correctness threads are resolved with no later reviewer replies.
Disposition of the ready-for-review suggestions: verified that AddRow already ignores an existing method source through IsSpecificMethodDataSource and ContainsSameAttribute (lines 781–805), and all three JoinDeferredDataSources call sites pair explicit method types. The proposed duplicate protection is already implemented. Retain the existing attribute checks and documented explicit-instance inference skip in this focused correctness fix; caching, helper extraction, and a richer inference result remain optional refactoring, as previously dispositioned. CI now confirms the requested engine coverage.
CodeRabbit's docstring percentage is an advisory tooling threshold, not a repository requirement or an identified documentation defect.
