Infer generic method types from instance data sources - #7620
Instance method data sources now infer generic test method arguments from their declared row types. Generic classes retain all inferred static and instance sources sharing an instantiation, in either declaration order. Explicit method types remain authoritative, and invalid inferred rows report constraint failures consistently.
Whole reference-tuple rows now infer against a typed first tuple parameter followed by optional or params parameters. Whole-row binding checks the complete open tuple shape, preserving nested tuple rows as separate columns when their concrete elements do not match the first parameter. Shared row normalization preserves open tuples until reflection-mode generic inference closes the type. Both matchers require consistent bindings for repeated type parameters before preserving a whole row; rejected candidates cannot affect spread inference. Single tuple parameters retain supported nested element conversions. Generator snapshots and engine regressions cover both execution modes, tuple binding, mixed sources and constraint violations. Engine assertions match decorated generic test names.
Rebased onto current main, preserving nullable class-source inference and source grouping.
Whole-row binding requires invariant outer tuple compatibility; sole tuple arguments retain numeric/nullable conversions and cross-family inference. Class arguments are substituted before matching each concrete class pairing.
Seven targeted fixtures: 18 passed in each execution mode. Native AOT publish succeeded; all 6 new regressions passed in the published application. Engine integration suite remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Sole tuple reconstruction unwraps open nullable elements against non-nullable source values; invariant whole-row matching with trailing parameters stays unchanged.
Static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple regressions failed inference before the fix and now infer int.
SingleTupleElementConversionTests: all 4 passed in each execution mode; Native AOT publish succeeded and the published fixture passed all 4. Engine integration coverage updated; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Generic test methods can infer type arguments from instance-based data sources, including sources used with generic test classes.
Tuple data rows can bind as whole tuples or spread across parameters, with support for nested tuples, nullable elements, and compatible conversions.
Bug Fixes
Preserved tuple rows and class constructor arguments in applicable data-source scenarios.
Improved reporting when type inference fails or inferred types violate generic constraints.
Sole tuple reconstruction follows implemented generic interfaces, preserving List to IEnumerable element conversions; invariant multi-parameter matching is unchanged.
Static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple regressions failed inference before the fix.
Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions. All 6 element-conversion tests passed in each execution mode. Native AOT publish succeeded and the published fixture passed all 6. Engine integration coverage updated for both modes; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Retain method data sources whose initial open-class inference fails until inference can retry with concrete class arguments. Nullable matching for concrete types is unchanged.
Static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple regressions failed before the fix and now infer int. Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions. Closed-class fixture: all 3 passed in each execution mode. Engine integration coverage updated; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md. The preceding interface fix was AOT-published and its 6-test fixture passed; the generator-only retry follow-up was validated in managed modes.
Match implemented interfaces on all row symbols, including arrays. Static int[] and instance List tuple elements both infer IEnumerable. Array regression failed before the fix.
Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; snapshot output unchanged. All 6 conversion fixture tests passed in each mode. Added explicit parentheses requested by Claude around the closed-class retry condition.
Latest generic-base regression validation:
Sole tuple reconstruction follows generic base classes, retaining candidate binding isolation and invariant multi-parameter matching. Runtime generic resolution and invocation inference follow the same base chain.
Static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple regressions reproduced the failure before the fix.
Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions. Conversion fixture: all 8 passed in each execution mode. Engine integration expectations updated for both modes; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Sole tuple reconstruction accepts supported explicit numeric element conversions, including int to short; multi-parameter whole-row invariance is unchanged.
Static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple regressions failed inference before the fix. Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions. All 10 conversion fixture tests passed in each execution mode.
Engine integration coverage updated for both modes; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md. No runtime reflection or public API changes.
Latest operator and uninferred closed-class validation (2ad30b9):
Sole tuple reconstruction supports user-defined element conversions; failed closed-class inference remains visible per source and concrete class. Constructor-row scoping prevents duplicate failures.
Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshots. All 12 conversion tests passed in source-generated, reflection and published Native AOT execution.
Explicit-class and constructor-row int/string regressions each produce 1 pass and 1 intentional inference failure in all three execution modes. Engine integration coverage updated; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md.
Latest string-parsing and covered-source validation (cfc27c1):
Closed-class source failures are deferred until all pairings are known and suppressed when another successful entry already runs that source.
Both findings reproduced inference failures before the fixes. Full net10.0 generator suite: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions.
Conversion fixture: 14 passed in each execution mode. Constructor-inferred and explicit generic class parameter-inference fixtures: 1 passed each in both modes.
Native AOT publish succeeded; all 16 targeted tests passed in the published application. Engine integration expectations updated for both modes; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked open issue #7351 requires three coding outcomes. (1) Source-generated mode infers generic method type arguments from the declared row type of an [InstanceMethodDataSource]. (2) A generic test class must not drop such a source silently. (3) Constraint failures must match reflection mode. The reviewed head addresses each outcome. In TestMetadataGenerator.cs, the name checks now include InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute at the constraint-failure entry, the method data source bucket, and the inaccessible-row and uninferred-argument diagnostics. Method sources without explicit method types join matching instantiations. Inference is retried after concrete class arguments are substituted, and a source that stays uninferable on a closed class reports a row failure (ReportUninferredClassSource). Fixtures and generator tests cover the struct-constraint diagnostic (InstanceMethodTypeInferenceTests), non-generic and generic classes, mixed sources, and constraint-violating rows in both modes (Issue7222Tests, GenericInstanceSourceTests, InstanceSourceConstraintViolationTests). This review did not run the tests. The reported generator results and the code paths support the verdict. Engine integration execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md, so that part rests on code inspection.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The inspected changes connect to row-type inference and row binding that #7351 requires. TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple (src/TUnit.Core/Helpers/TupleHelper.cs) matches the complete open tuple shape with consistent repeated bindings and invariant outer tuples. It mirrors the generator's row matching. TestGenericTypeResolver.TryInferTypeMapping (src/TUnit.Engine/Services/TestGenericTypeResolver.cs) applies the same inference to reflection mode. It infers tuple elements across tuple families, skips closed tuple elements, and searches generic base classes. DataUnwrapper and DataSourceHelpers route whole tuple rows to the first tuple parameter, so the inferred test receives the intended arguments. The PR also adds support for element conversions (nullable, numeric, enum, string parsing, user-defined operators) in sole-tuple reconstruction. These conversions belong to the same binding path, and the fixtures test them in both modes. Reviewers may still judge the breadth of this conversion matrix as larger than the issue example. The PR does not implement the separately tracked work in #7622, #7623, #7624, #7493, #7430, #7410, or #7412. No change was found that is unrelated to #7351.

A rabbit checks each row in flight, Then binds the types both broad and right. Class arguments close the trail, Whole tuples keep their shape without fail. The tests hop through each case tonight.
Reviewed the generator change and the new snapshot/engine tests.
Summary: The fix is small and targeted. InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute is now treated like MethodDataSourceAttribute in three places: bucketing, row-type inference, and constraint-violation reporting. Generic classes therefore no longer silently lose these tests. The snapshot shows the expected output: a valid row yields Valid<string>, and a struct-violating row yields a GenericConstraintViolationDataSource.
Observations (non-blocking):
The attribute-name string checks ("MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute") are now repeated in at least three places. A small helper such as IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) would keep them from drifting the next time a variant is added. The same helper could be used in the switch at ~L1233.
The [GenerateGenericTest] early-return in InferTypesFromMethodDataSource uses IsOrInherits("global::TUnit.Core.GenerateGenericTestAttribute") and scans MethodAttributes on each call. This is cheap and the comment explains the reflection-mode parity well. If this path gets hotter, hoist the check out of the per-attribute call.
The tests cover valid and violating rows on generic and non-generic classes, so I see no missing scenario. The Engine test is left to CI, as the repo guidelines say.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.
Summary
Generic methods now infer types from instance data sources and preserve sources sharing the same concrete types.
Instance data source rows can now choose generic test method types.

Reviewed all review surfaces for 451178d: Claude and Codex both report no blocking findings; Greptile reports no actionable issues and there are no inline threads. Claude’s helper suggestion is optional refactoring: the three checks serve distinct collection/error paths and all now include the instance attribute. The per-attribute explicit-type check is small; no measured performance problem warrants caching it here. Both observations are dispositioned without a code change.
Marking ready for CI and the ready-for-review Claude run. Auto-merge remains unarmed until that review completes and its findings are read.
The change is small and targeted. InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute now goes through the same row-type inference and constraint-violation paths that MethodDataSourceAttribute already used. The snapshot shows both a valid instantiation (Valid<string>) and a constraint violation (StructOnly) coming out as expected. The [GenerateGenericTest] early return follows reflection-mode behaviour, and its comment explains why.
I only read the generator diff and the start of the snapshot. I didn't build or run anything. CI has to cover the engine tests and both execution modes.
Suggestions, none of them blocking:
Attribute-name matching is now repeated in four places. The checks Name is "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" and the case labels are spread across TestMetadataGenerator.cs. A small helper such as IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) would keep these in sync. The next variant (or a missed spot) would then be a one-line change. A missed spot already shows up as silently dropped generic tests, which is the bug this PR fixes.
The GenerateGenericTest bail-out uses a LINQ Any with a lambda inside generator code. This runs per test method, so it allocates a closure on every call. Checking the attribute only after confirming the source is an instance source (as the code already does) is fine. A plain foreach would still avoid the closure, in line with the repo's allocation guidance.
Compare attribute classes by full name rather than the short Name. The short-name comparison also matches an unrelated user type called MethodDataSourceAttribute. That's pre-existing and consistent with the surrounding code, so I'd handle it in a separate cleanup.
Overall this is a good fix with solid regression coverage.

Keep duplicate instance-source rows on generic classes.
This PR adds [InstanceMethodDataSource] to the generic method-source path. If two instance sources on a generic class both infer string, the class row creates one instantiation and the second source is treated as a duplicate. The duplicate path does not add that source because joinsDuplicateMethodSources is false for generic classes and the source is not an [Arguments] row. The second source's rows can therefore be missing in source-generated mode, while reflection collects both sources without method-level [GenerateGenericTest].
Update the generic-class duplicate path so that each [InstanceMethodDataSource] is added to the existing instantiation.

Support reference tuples in generic method-data-source inference.
The new instance-source path calls InferTypesFromMethodDataSourceRowType, but that helper recognizes only compiler tuples. For IEnumerable<Tuple<int, string>> with Test<T>(T first, string second), it can infer T as Tuple<int, string> instead of int. This produces an incorrect closed method and row shape. The same limitation already exists for [MethodDataSource]; this PR exposes it for [InstanceMethodDataSource].
The factory does not spread this exact row into int and string. Because the misinferred first parameter is Tuple<int, string>, its matching tuple binding preserves the row as one item.
Use GetTupleElementTypes for both row and single-parameter checks so reference tuples follow the same inference rules as compiler tuples.

Duplicate instance sources now join the existing generic class/method instantiation when method types are inferred; explicit GenerateGenericTest behavior is preserved. The regression adds a second string source and verifies its additional row.
Reference tuple rows use the shared tuple-element helper for inference, retaining single-tuple parameter binding. Regression coverage includes spreading Tuple<int, string> and preserving Tuple<T, string>.
The engine assertion selects every Failed result and checks its message, including missing-message failures.
Validation: full net10.0 core generator suite 343 passed, 1 skipped; reviewed and updated the affected snapshot. Targeted application runs in both source-generated and reflection modes each produced 5 passes and exactly 2 intentional struct-constraint failures, with matching messages. Engine integration suite remains for CI per repository instructions. Existing build warnings remain tracked by #7410 and #7412.
Claude's optional suggestions are dispositioned: consolidating short-name checks and moving to qualified names are broader cleanup, consistent with the surrounding implementation; the Any predicate captures no locals, so it does not allocate a closure on each call. No measured allocation regression warrants refactoring here.
Run 41952510053 completed successfully, removing the earlier wait. The new head now needs fresh automated review and CI; auto-merge remains unarmed.
The change is a small, focused extension of the existing MethodDataSource inference paths to InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute. I found no blocking issues.
What I checked
The generator now treats InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute like MethodDataSourceAttribute in bucketing, row-type inference, inaccessible-type failures and the constraint-violation message.
It joins the existing class/method pair the same way [Arguments] rows do.
The explicit [GenerateGenericTest] carve-out keeps reflection-mode semantics. That includes the tuple-conversion case, which is why InferTypesFromMethodDataSource returns null for it.
GetTupleElementTypes replaces the IsTupleType checks, so Tuple<,> rows are spread across parameters. The ReferenceTuple and PreservedTuple fixtures cover this.
The tests cover valid and constraint-violating rows on generic and non-generic classes. The snapshot is new and there are engine tests for both modes.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
GenerateGenericTestAttribute is now checked with testMethod.MethodAttributes.Any(... IsOrInherits ...) in two places. One is a lambda that allocates and the other is static. Extract a single helper such as HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod) so the two sites cannot drift apart. Both are on the generator's discovery path, so computing it once per method would also help.
The attribute name strings ("MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute") now appear in four or more places. A shared IsMethodDataSourceLike(AttributeData) helper would make the next addition, such as another source type, a one-line change instead of a hunt.
The generator and engine paths must behave identically, per AGENTS.md. The engine tests cover both modes, which is good. The reflection-mode behaviour you matched is only exercised through CI, so please confirm the Issue7222Tests cases pass in both modes there.
Fixed the single-generic-parameter reference-tuple regression in 6600441. A reference tuple now infers the whole row for an open single parameter, preserving the previous behavior and deduplicating against explicit GenerateGenericTest types. Multi-parameter reference-tuple spreading and typed tuple parameters remain covered by the existing fixture.
The regression snapshot reproduced the erroneous extra WholeRow before the fix and now contains only WholeRow<Tuple<int, string>>. Full net10.0 generator suite: 343 passed, 1 existing skip. Targeted WholeReferenceTupleSourceTests application runs: exactly 1 pass in source-generated mode and 1 pass with --reflection. Added engine integration coverage for both modes; that suite remains for CI per AGENTS.md. Its current in-flight results cannot validate this new head yet.
The new fixture exposed a separate analyzer false positive, tracked as #7622 and narrowly suppressed in the fixture. Initial parallel application build hit MSB4166 child-node exits without retained diagnostics; a serialized build completed successfully. Existing package/build warnings remain tracked in #7410/#7412.
Claude's non-blocking helper suggestions remain optional cleanup: the predicates capture no locals (no per-call closure), and matching surrounding attribute handling keeps this correction focused. Both execution modes were checked directly as requested. Run 41952510053 succeeded; the old blocker no longer holds. This new head requires fresh automated review and CI; auto-merge remains unarmed.
Review: Infer generic method types from instance data sources
I read the generator changes in TestMetadataGenerator.cs and skimmed the snapshot. I did not run the tests. Overall the change looks sound. It extends the existing MethodDataSource inference paths to InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute, and it keeps the explicit [GenerateGenericTest] behaviour that reflection mode has. Snapshots and engine regression tests are included.
Suggestions, none of them blocking:
Duplicated GenerateGenericTest check. The same lambda, MethodAttributes.Any(a => a.AttributeClass?.IsOrInherits("global::TUnit.Core.GenerateGenericTestAttribute") is true), now appears in both TryAddInstantiation and InferTypesFromMethodDataSource. Move it into one helper, for example HasExplicitGenericTestTypes(testMethod). Then the two places that must agree on reflection-mode parity cannot drift apart. The InferTypesFromMethodDataSource copy also uses a capturing lambda. That is minor, but it is in a generator hot path, so a static lambda or a plain loop would be better.
Attribute names matched as strings. There are now more Name is "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" checks. A small IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) helper would remove the repetition. It would also make sure the next place that needs both names does not forget one, as the bucket switch and the failure reporting could have.
receivesWholeTuple is subtle. It mixes three conditions: reference tuples, value tuples, and a lone type-parameter that receives a non-value-tuple row. A short table of cases in the comment, or one snapshot case per branch, would help the next reader. The snapshot already covers ReferenceTuple and PreservedTuple, so this is mainly about documenting the intent.
Source-generated vs reflection mode. The PR description says both modes were run for the fixtures, which is good. Please confirm CI's engine tests exercise the constraint-violation fixture in both modes, since AGENTS.md requires identical behaviour there.
Fixed both outstanding blocking findings in 79ee20a:
Class-level GenerateGenericTest now retains both instance sources when they infer the same method types; the specificAttr pairing path joins them just like the class-row path.
A bare generic parameter infers the first tuple element without explicit method types. Whole reference-tuple inference remains for the explicit GenerateGenericTest case, preserving the prior regression fix.
The before-fix regression failed on InstanceElement; its generated explicit-class entry contained Rows but no MoreRows factory. The reviewed updated snapshot contains both factories and int instantiations for instance and static tuple sources. Validation: full net10.0 generator suite 343 passed, 1 existing skip; application build succeeded; explicit-class source fixture 2 passed in each mode, inferred tuple fixture 2 passed in each mode, preserved whole-reference-tuple fixture 1 passed in each mode. Engine integration coverage exercises both modes in CI; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. Existing build/package warnings remain tracked in #7410/#7412.
Claude's repeated explicit-type predicate suggestion is implemented with one static-predicate helper. The tuple comment now explains typed parameters, ordinary bare parameters, and explicit method types. Attribute-name consolidation remains optional cleanup consistent with the surrounding code. Constraint-violation coverage already runs through the parameterized Issue7222Tests in both CI modes.
Run 41952510053 succeeded, so the earlier blocker no longer holds. Both outstanding threads are dispositioned and resolved. This ready PR now requires fresh automated reviews and CI for the pushed head; auto-merge remains unarmed.
Instance method data sources now infer generic method type arguments the same way [MethodDataSource] does, and the [GenerateGenericTest] carve-out matches reflection mode. I found no blocking issues.
The change reuses the existing MethodDataSource inference, join and constraint-violation paths. It adds InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute to each name check instead of forking the logic.
HasExplicitGenericTestTypes replaces the inline GenerateGenericTest check, so the conditions are no longer duplicated.
Tuple handling now goes through GetTupleElementTypes, which already exists and mirrors reflection mode. Reference tuples (System.Tuple) are covered as well as value tuples.
Snapshot and regression coverage covers valid rows and constraint-violating rows on generic and non-generic classes.
Suggestion (non-blocking): the string comparisons on AttributeClass?.Name for MethodDataSourceAttribute and InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute now appear in at least five places in TestMetadataGenerator.cs. A small helper such as IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) would keep the next addition from missing a site. It would also remove the duplicated InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute && !HasExplicitGenericTestTypes condition in the join logic.
I didn't run the tests. I only read the diff, and engine tests are left to CI as the repository instructions say.
Fixed both outstanding findings in cfc27c1, with commit-linked replies and resolved threads. The earlier blocker is gone: run 41952510053 completed successfully. Feedback was handled while checks ran.
Claude's current-head suggestions are non-blocking. The direct matcher parity-table follow-up is now explicitly tracked on #7386, including these tuple reconstruction cases. Existing shared fixtures and engine expectations run both modes. The attribute caching/helper and matcher split suggestions remain cleanup follow-ups rather than blockers for this correctness fix; no measured generator performance regression was reported. ReportUninferredClassSource's First remains protected by AddMethodViolation, which adds or finds the matching concrete-class failure entry before it is read. Expanded concrete params inference remains tracked by #7624.
GitHub's head matches the pushed commit. Fresh review and CI are running; auto-merge remains unarmed until their findings are dispositioned.
Review of #7620 (instance method data source generic inference). I read the source-generator part of the diff and skimmed the Engine and Core changes. I did not build or run the tests.
Concerns:
The compile-time open-type matcher (MatchesOpenRowType in TestMetadataGenerator.cs, about 100 lines) duplicates the runtime TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple and CastHelper rules. Its comments say it matches runtime behaviour, but nothing enforces that, so the two modes can silently diverge. Suggest a parity test that runs the same row and parameter shapes through both matchers. Also consider splitting the strict whole-row matcher from the permissive sole-tuple reconstruction matcher instead of using one function with a boolean flag.
The check 'MethodDataSourceAttribute or InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute' now appears in at least five places. A small IsMethodDataSource helper would stop the next addition from missing one. HasExplicitGenericTestTypes is a good step in that direction.
CollectConcreteInstantiations keeps growing: uninferredClassSources, the ReportUninferredClassSource local function and the nullable methodSources types add state to an already nested method, and the retry relies on ordering assumptions. Extracting the class-closed retry into a named step with its own tests would be easier to maintain.
reconstructTupleElements accepts any parsable-from-string target, but CastHelper is the real authority. A test with a string element feeding a nullable or parsable target in both modes would confirm parity.
Positives: snapshot tests, unit tests, AOT publish and both execution modes are covered. Known gaps are tracked in #7622, #7623 and #7624. The explicit-types path is kept compatible with reflection mode.
No blocking bugs found in the portion I read. The risk is long-term maintainability, so I would like at least the parity test from item 1 before merge.

Pushed 53402c5 addressing the integral-to-enum inference finding; replied with the commit and resolved its thread. Run 41952510053 succeeded, so the earlier wait no longer applies.
Disposition of Claude's latest conversation review (6649945712):
Parity coverage: SingleTupleElementConversionTests is the same shared source and parameter-shape matrix in both discovery modes, asserting inferred types and converted values. It now includes static value-tuple and instance reference-tuple enum rows. Issue7222Tests runs the same fixture with the same expected 16 passing tests for each TestMode. Local execution also passed all 16 in each mode. This checks matcher parity through discovery and invocation rather than exposing either private matcher.
String/nullable parsing: StringElement and StringReferenceElement in that matrix cover string-to-int and string-to-nullable-decimal; both passed in each mode.
Splitting strict/reconstruction matching, a method-source attribute helper, and extracting class-closed retry are optional maintainability suggestions. Keeping those refactors out of this correctness fix avoids changing the now-covered binding and source-pairing paths. The existing retry regressions and generator snapshots retain coverage.
Validation: generator suite 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed and committed only intentional .verified.txt changes. Both discovery modes passed the 16-case conversion matrix. Engine integration execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md. Native AOT publishing succeeded and the published conversion fixture passed all 16 tests. Existing application preservation warnings remain tracked by #7493/#7430. No new reflection paths or public API changes.
Current head awaits fresh CI and reviewer verdicts; auto-merge is not armed while those verdicts are missing.
Review of #7620 (instance method data source generic inference)
I read the generator and helper changes. I did not run the tests, and the engine suite is left to CI as AGENTS.md says. I found no blocking correctness bug. The tests cover a lot: both execution modes, snapshots, constraint violations, and an AOT publish.
What looks good
InstanceMethodDataSource is now handled consistently in the join, uninferred-failure and violation-explanation paths. Explicit [GenerateGenericTest] types still win, via the new HasExplicitGenericTestTypes helper, which replaces the duplicated inline check.
CreateUninferredTypeArgumentFailure and DescribeDataSource are extracted instead of copied.
Every behaviour change has a regression fixture and a unit test.
Design concerns (non-blocking)
Two matchers must stay in step.MatchesOpenRowType in TestMetadataGenerator.cs (Roslyn symbols) and TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple / DataSourceHelpers (runtime reflection) each carry rules for nullable lifting, string parsing, enum-from-integral conversion, base-class and interface matching, and invariance of multi-parameter rows. The code comments say they mirror each other, but the only guard is the paired tests. A shared table-driven test that feeds the same row/parameter shapes through both matchers would catch drift. Without it, source-generated and reflection mode can silently diverge, which AGENTS.md says must not happen.
MatchesOpenRowType is hard to follow. It is about 120 lines and runs seven rule groups in sequence, with a reconstructTupleElements flag that changes the semantics of most of them. Splitting it into MatchesWholeRow (identity/invariant only) and MatchesReconstructedElement (conversions allowed) would remove most of the flag checks. Each half would then be easier to compare against its runtime counterpart.
CreateUninferredTypeArgumentFailure and CloseOverClass retries. The uninferredClassSources deferral plus the results.Any(...)/results.First(...) lookups in ReportUninferredClassSource depend on result order and on ConcreteClassName uniqueness. A small named record for 'deferred class source' and a helper such as TryGetViolationEntry(concreteClassName) would make the invariants explicit. results.First throws if the entry is ever missing.
Repeated attribute-name checks.is "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" now appears in at least four places. An IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) helper next to HasExplicitGenericTestTypes would keep the next addition from missing one.
Performance.testMethodParams.Skip(1).All(...) and the per-call Select(...).ToArray() allocate during generation. The cost is small and this is compile time, so I would not change it, but the dictionary copies in the base-class/interface candidate loops are worth keeping in mind if inference gets slow on large projects.
Out of scope but already tracked: the params expansion (#7624) and the analyzer false positives (#7622).
Overall this is a solid, well-tested change. I'd merge once CI, including the engine suite, is green. The matcher-parity test in point 1 is the follow-up I'd most want.
Fixed in 3e16914. Sole-tuple reconstruction now retains CastHelper-supported IConvertible conversions to built-in targets, including nullable targets; multi-parameter whole-row matching stays invariant. Static value-tuple bool-to-int and instance reference-tuple int-to-nullable-bool regressions reproduced the inference failure before the fix.
Validation: full net10.0 generator suite 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed snapshot additions. The shared 18-case conversion matrix passed in source-generated, reflection and published Native AOT execution. Engine integration expectations cover both modes; execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md. Existing application preservation warnings remain tracked by #7493/#7430.
The earlier blocker is gone: run 41952510053 completed successfully. Feedback was handled while checks ran. Claude's current-head nonblocking suggestions retain the prior disposition: the shared conversion matrix exercises both discovery modes, while direct matcher-table coverage is tracked on #7386; broader refactors remain follow-ups. GitHub's head matches the pushed commit. Fresh CI and reviewer verdicts are pending; auto-merge remains unarmed. Known macOS MSB4166 occurred in the targeted test build and is recorded on #7468; explicit serial build and subsequent managed executions passed.
Review of #7620 (diff read, tests not run). No blocking correctness bugs found. Instance method sources now feed generic inference, explicit GenerateGenericTest types stay authoritative, and open tuple rows are matched by full shape. Coverage is good: snapshots, unit tests, both modes, AOT publish. Non-blocking design concerns: (1) MatchesOpenRowType in the generator hand-mirrors CastHelper conversion rules (string parsing, IConvertible, enum, numeric, nullable, generic base). Nothing enforces parity with reflection mode, so add a parity test running one row/parameter matrix through both matchers, and split the method into small named predicates. (2) The generic-base-class walk is written three times (ReflectionTestDataCollector, TestGenericTypeResolver, generator). Share one runtime helper; the resolver copy isolates bindings in a candidate dictionary and copies on success, while the collector copy recurses without that isolation. (3) TupleHelper.OpenTupleMatches is a static unbounded ConcurrentDictionary keyed on (Type, Type). The key space is small, but document that or drop the cache, and note the guide asks for before/after measurements on hot paths. (4) The check "MethodDataSourceAttribute" or "InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute" repeats at about five sites in TestMetadataGenerator.cs; an IsMethodDataSource(AttributeData) helper would stop a future site missing one. Minor: comment why results.First(...) in ReportUninferredClassSource is safe. Overall solid and well tested; I would merge and file a follow-up for the parity test and shared helpers.

The earlier wait is resolved: run 41952510053 completed successfully. The current head has a valid new blocking finding: sole-tuple inference rejects a closed object-to-int element even though the binder supports unboxing (Codex thread PRRT_kwDOLJDcx86z7hdW). Verified against MatchesOpenRowType: its conversion predicate excludes unboxing.
This PR has reached 20 automated review rounds and still has a blocking finding. Per the issue-pr-loop rework budget, it is superseded by two native sub-issues of #7351:
No current conflicting files: GitHub previously reported the head mergeable; main has since merged #7625 in the tuple/optional-array area. The historically shared insertion points to reconcile are TestMetadataGenerator.cs, GenericInstanceSourceTests.cs, Issue7222Tests.cs and generator snapshots. #7629 must preserve #7625 rather than restore obsolete test deletions.
Claude review 6650151530 is explicitly nonblocking: direct matcher parity is assigned to #7629 (also tracked in #7386); shared runtime base-walk helpers, matcher decomposition, attribute helper and cache documentation/measurement remain maintainability follow-ups in #7386. The guarded results.First lookup has the existing disposition: AddMethodViolation creates or locates the concrete-class failure entry before it is read. No speculative performance change is included.
Closing without merging and preserving branch issue-7351-instance-inference at 3e16914 for extraction. #7351 remains open until both deliverables land. No further CI wait or on-hold label is needed on this superseded PR.

Instance method data sources now infer generic test method arguments from their declared row types. Generic classes retain all inferred static and instance sources sharing an instantiation, in either declaration order. Explicit method types remain authoritative, and invalid inferred rows report constraint failures consistently.
Whole reference-tuple rows now infer against a typed first tuple parameter followed by optional or params parameters. Whole-row binding checks the complete open tuple shape, preserving nested tuple rows as separate columns when their concrete elements do not match the first parameter. Shared row normalization preserves open tuples until reflection-mode generic inference closes the type. Both matchers require consistent bindings for repeated type parameters before preserving a whole row; rejected candidates cannot affect spread inference. Single tuple parameters retain supported nested element conversions. Generator snapshots and engine regressions cover both execution modes, tuple binding, mixed sources and constraint violations. Engine assertions match decorated generic test names.
