Summary

Generic tuple data sources distinguish a whole first tuple argument from a nested multi-column row before inferring method types. Generated and reflection discovery agree on repeated bindings, nullable/nested elements, tuple-family reconstruction, wrapped rows, and runtime element casts. Interface/base candidates isolate their bindings and preserve strict repeated-binding checks through nested tuple arguments; invalid generic constraints reject a candidate rather than aborting discovery.

Ordinary spread-column and trailing-array inference retain their existing policies. The rule/implementation table in .claude/docs/project-structure.md documents the alignment contract. This extracts tuple behavior from #7620 without its instance-source/class-grouping work. Known analyzer false positives are narrowly suppressed in fixtures and tracked by #7622; matcher maintainability follow-ups are tracked by #7588.

Validation

  • Wrapped rows with explicit method types unwrap outer Func, TestDataRow and inner Func before inference; optional-tail regressions assert all three inferred int methods alongside the three unsupported explicit long cases. Spread array/nullable columns infer only long, preserving ordinary last-column inference.
  • Core generator snapshots: 351 passed, one existing skip; intentional additions reviewed and committed.
  • Shared regression matrix: 112 passed in each discovery mode and Native AOT; six intentional failures cover the three existing unsupported-inference cases and three explicit long tuple instantiations with trailing parameters.
  • Explicit method types now retain inferred whole-tuple instantiations alongside explicit ones, with optional/params/trailing-array regressions and a nested spread-row control. Before the fix, reflection missed three inferred tests.
  • Explicit method types with reference-to-value, reference-to-reference and value-to-reference rows: six tests pass in both discovery modes and Native AOT. Before the fix reflection discovered four, missing two inferred int instantiations.
  • Existing optional/trailing tuple regressions: 55 passed in each discovery mode.
  • Bare type parameters with explicit reference-tuple method types now infer the whole row in reflection, avoiding an extra failing first-element test; before the fix generated discovery ran one passing test and reflection ran two tests with one failure. Cross-family numeric assertions also verify the converted value is 1.
  • Direct value/reference tuple rows with explicit method types: six passing tests in generated discovery, reflection discovery and Native AOT. Before the fix reflection omitted the three inferred int instantiations.
  • Engine integration expectations updated for CI; suite not run locally per AGENTS.md.
  • Native AOT publish, net10.0 build, and diff checks passed.

Walkthrough

Tuple row handling and generic type inference now support additional value- and reference-tuple shapes, conversions, and trailing-parameter cases. Source-generated and reflection discovery apply corresponding inference and reconstruction rules. Added tests cover these cases and document the inference behavior.

Review of PR 7631

Well scoped extraction of the tuple inference from 7620. The generator, reflection resolver and runtime unwrapping follow the same rules, and the regression matrix covers both discovery modes plus AOT.

Issues

  1. Possible NullReferenceException in DataUnwrapper.cs (~line 175). The new branch calls values[0]!.GetType() unguarded. If the first data value is null and the first parameter is an open tuple type, it throws. The old IsInstanceOfType(values[0]) tolerated null. Guard it (treat a null row as no match) and add a regression case with a null first value. The DataSourceHelpers call is safe because IsTuple(item) has already passed.

  2. Matching rules are duplicated across generator MatchesOpenRowType, TupleHelper.MatchesType, and the inference changes in TestGenericTypeResolver and ReflectionTestDataCollector. The generic-base walk is now repeated in the last two; consider one shared TupleHelper helper. The generator cannot share runtime code, so keep the matrix tests as the alignment check.

  3. OpenTupleMatches is an unbounded static ConcurrentDictionary keyed by (Type, Type). It holds Type references for the process lifetime, which may matter for collectible load contexts. Matching is cheap, so consider dropping the cache.

  4. The receivesWholeTuple condition in InferTypesFromMethodDataSourceRowType is hard to read. It mixes && and ||, assigns wholeTupleBindings inside the condition, and uses LINQ Skip(1).All. Extract a local TryMatchWholeTuple(out bindings) so the side effect is explicit.

I did not run the tests and am relying on the results reported in the PR. Item 1 is the one to fix before merge; the rest are maintainability suggestions.

Review dispositions for f5b1371:

  • Claude item 1: the reported null dereference is unreachable. DataUnwrapper.UnwrapWithTypesInternal returns when values.Length != 1 || !DataSourceHelpers.IsTuple(values[0]); IsTuple(null) returns false. Added NullRow_DoesNotMatchOpenTupleWithTrailingParameter using an open tuple and optional trailing parameter to pin this behavior. All 13 DataSourceHelpers tests pass. No additional guard is needed.
  • Claude items 2 and 4: accepted as nonblocking maintainability suggestions, with no refactoring in this correctness fix. Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588 already covers extracting the row-binding traversal and inference policy; the Roslyn/runtime adapters must preserve the distinction between strict whole-row matching and element reconstruction. The matrix remains the alignment check.
  • Claude item 3: retaining the cache for this fix. Its strong Type references are real, but this review does not establish a supported collectible-load-context scenario or a measured benefit from removing discovery caching. Removing it without allocation/performance measurements would conflict with the hot-path guidance in AGENTS.md. No claim of collectible-context safety is made.
  • Greptile's repeated-element conversion finding: fixed in this commit and replied to on the inline thread.

Validation: core generator snapshots 350 passed / 1 skipped; tuple regression matrix 43 passed in each of generated and reflection modes; Native AOT publish succeeded and all 43 cases passed in the published executable; DataSourceHelpers 13 passed. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. Existing restore/analyzer warnings are tracked by #7412 and #7410, and generated hook trim warnings by #7430.

Review of #7631: tuple inference and runtime element conversions

I read the diff but did not build it or run the tests. I did not find a blocking defect.

What looks good

  • The source-generator path (MatchesOpenRowType) and the reflection paths (TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple, TestGenericTypeResolver, ReflectionTestDataCollector) were changed together. That follows the AGENTS.md rule that both discovery modes behave the same.
  • Candidate bindings for the base-class and interface matches are isolated in a copy and merged only on success. This avoids a rejected candidate leaving partial bindings behind.
  • TupleHelper.OpenTupleMatches caches reflection results per (parameter, row) pair, which suits the hot path.
  • The 41-case regression matrix runs in both modes, and the Native AOT publish was checked.

Suggestions

  1. The same matching algorithm now exists in three places. The generator's Roslyn version, TupleHelper.MatchesType and the TestGenericTypeResolver inference each carry their own copy of the rules. These include the "last element wins for repeated direct type parameters" behaviour and the base-class/interface candidate isolation. The comments say "mirrors generator", so the sync is manual. A small shared table-driven test that feeds one set of (parameter, row) cases through both the symbol-based and Type-based matchers would catch drift. The 41-case matrix partly does this already. Please keep it a required test for any future change here.
  2. MatchesOpenRowType takes a compilation parameter that it only passes along recursively. Remove it, or use it.
  3. The "last element wins" binding is inconsistent. Direct type parameters in a tuple overwrite earlier bindings ((T, T) with (int, string) binds T to string). Everywhere else in the same function, a conflicting binding rejects the match. The comment says this is deliberate, to preserve existing behaviour. I would still record it explicitly in a test, and ideally as a follow-up issue, because it silently picks a type that may fail at invocation.
  4. receivesWholeTuple is a long inline boolean. It mixes a LINQ Skip(1).All(...) and a side-effecting assignment (wholeTupleBindings = new ...) inside the condition. Pulling it into a named helper that returns the bindings would be easier to read and would remove the assignment inside the expression. The lambda also allocates on this path, which runs only at generation time, so that is only a readability point.

Overall the change is sound and well covered. The suggestions above are non-blocking.

Fixed Codex's nullable repeated-binding finding in 85d9577. Sole tuple elements now unwrap Nullable<T> and a nullable declared source element before applying last-element inference. Generated discovery, reflection discovery, and reflection invocation agree. Strict whole-row matching for trailing parameters and interface/base candidate consistency remain intact.

Added six shared regression cases covering value/reference tuples, non-nullable/nullable declared second elements, and null source values. All six failed before the fix. Afterward the complete #7629 matrix passes 49/49 in generated mode and 49/49 in reflection mode. Reviewed the new Value<long> / Reference<long> snapshot; generator suite: 350 passed, one existing skip. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md.

Claude's latest nonblocking suggestions:

  • Items 1 and 4: keep this shared matrix as the parity check; traversal/helper extraction remains the maintainability follow-up covered by Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588.
  • Item 2: confirmed that compilation is only forwarded. Retaining the existing signature in this correctness fix; removing it is a nonblocking cleanup alongside that helper refactoring.
  • Item 3: last-element inference is deliberate compatibility behavior. RepeatedConvertibleTupleTests pins it, and the new nullable cases extend coverage. Rejecting differing element types would regress working convertible rows; no inference-policy change is proposed here.

Native AOT publish and the 49-case published executable run succeeded. The initial parallel publish hit the known macOS MSB4166 worker exit; single-worker publishing succeeded, and the reproduction is recorded on #7468. Existing analyzer/restore and generated-hook trim warnings remain tracked by #7410, #7412, and #7430.

Review of #7631 (tuple inference for generic sources)

I read the source diff only. I did not run any tests, and I did not get through the last part of TestGenericTypeResolver.cs or the test files.

The approach is sound. The whole-row vs nested-row distinction is handled, and MatchesOpenTuple fixes the open-generic IsInstanceOfType problem. The Native AOT publish and the 52-case matrix in both discovery modes are good evidence.

1. Possible NRE in DataUnwrapper.cs

firstDataParameterType.ContainsGenericParameters
    && TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple(firstDataParameterType, values[0]!.GetType())

values[0] can be null here, for example a null tuple argument. The ! only silences the compiler, so an open tuple parameter with a null first value would throw during unwrapping. Before this change, IsInstanceOfType(null) just returned false. Please guard it with values[0] is { } first && ... and add a test where the first value is null.

2. The same inference rules now live in four places

The rules are: last-wins binding, nullable lifting, generic-base fallback, and the Tuple/ValueTuple family bridge. They are implemented in MatchesOpenRowType (generator), TupleHelper.MatchesType, ReflectionTestDataCollector.InferGenericTypeMapping and TestGenericTypeResolver.TryInferTypeMapping.

Each copy has its own flags (tupleElement, overwriteBindings, reconstructTupleElements). The comments already say "mirrors X", which shows the drift risk. The shared test matrix helps, but I would move the engine-side rules into one TupleHelper inference routine that both reflection call sites use. The generator has to stay separate because it works on symbols. That leaves two implementations to keep in sync instead of four, and fewer boolean flags threading through recursive calls.

3. Readability of the receivesWholeTuple condition

It mixes && and || without parentheses inside a lambda (parameter.IsOptional || parameter.IsParams || A && B). It also assigns wholeTupleBindings as a side effect inside the condition. Pull it into a small helper such as TryMatchWholeTupleRow(testMethodParams, rowType, out bindings). Then the precedence is explicit and the side effect disappears.

4. Minor

OpenTupleMatches is a static ConcurrentDictionary keyed by (Type, Type). It grows with the number of distinct types, so that is acceptable, but a short comment saying so would help.

Overall I would fix #1 before merging. #2 and #3 are maintainability improvements and could be a follow-up.

Addressed the current review in e15ce9f.

  • Greptile array inference: ordinary array recursion no longer forwards top-level overwrites. All nine InferredGenericParamsArrayTests pass in reflection mode, including Inferred_ArrayElements.
  • Greptile nested interface/base inference: interface candidates retain tuple context while keeping repeated bindings strict. New value/reference (IEnumerable<Base<T>>, int) fixtures infer int in both modes.
  • Codex spread-column parity: cross-family Tuple/ValueTuple inference is restricted to reconstructed whole tuple rows. A new spread-column fixture fails inference before invocation in both modes; existing whole-row reconstruction still passes.
  • Codex candidate isolation: tuple invocation now calls the discovery matcher, sharing candidate validation and commit-on-success bindings. New value/reference two-type-parameter fixtures select IPair<long, string> after rejecting IPair<int, int> in both modes.
  • Claude item 1: added the explicit null guard requested again. The existing NullRow_DoesNotMatchOpenTupleWithTrailingParameter regression passes. The earlier IsTuple guard also remains.
  • Claude item 2: this fix shares tuple inference between reflection discovery and invocation, removing the invoker's duplicate base traversal. Broader row-binding/helper consolidation remains the nonblocking follow-up Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588.
  • Claude item 3: named-helper extraction for the generator condition remains nonblocking follow-up Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588, as previously dispositioned; it does not change this correctness fix.
  • Claude item 4: added the process-lifetime cache cardinality comment.

Validation: all 56 successful #7629 cases pass in each discovery mode, with exactly the two intended unsupported inference failures; 9 inferred-array reflection tests and 13 DataSourceHelpers tests pass. Core generator snapshots: 350 passed, 1 existing skip; reviewed appended metadata for int, string, long, and the unsupported spread case. Native AOT publish succeeded; the published executable also passed all 56 supported cases and reported exactly the two intended unsupported inference failures. Engine integration expectations were updated for CI; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. Existing restore/analyzer and unrelated trimming warnings remain tracked by #7412, #7410, and #7430.

Review of #7631

I read the diff but did not build or run it. I did not look at the Engine-side TestGenericTypeResolver changes in detail, and I did not review the 5,400-line snapshot line by line. The behaviour is well specified and the PR description is thorough. My concerns are about maintainability, not correctness.

Main concern: the matching rules now live in three places

The same rules are implemented separately in:

  • the generator MatchesOpenRowType (Roslyn symbols),
  • TupleHelper.MatchesType, the runtime Type version,
  • the tupleElement / overwriteBindings path in TestGenericTypeResolver.TryInferTypeMapping and ReflectionTestDataCollector.InferGenericTypeMapping.

These rules are subtle: later occurrences of a type parameter win only for reconstructed tuple elements; interface and generic-base candidates require consistent bindings; nullable lifting applies only to reconstructed elements; whole rows stay strictly invariant.

The comments say the copies "mirror" each other, but nothing enforces it, and the two boolean switches make drift easy. The shared 52-case matrix run in both modes is the right safety net, so keep it a hard CI gate. Add a short table listing each rule and where it is implemented. If the rules keep growing, consider an explicit TupleBindingMode enum (WholeRow, Reconstructed) instead of two booleans. It documents intent and removes the invalid flag combinations.

Smaller points

  • In the generator tuple loop, the nullable-stripping preamble duplicates the nullable-lifting branch at the top of MatchesOpenRowType. A small shared helper would remove it. The loop also calls MatchesOpenRowType(parameterElements[i], rowElements[i], ...) with the unstripped elements after computing stripped locals. That is probably intentional, but a comment would help.
  • OpenTupleMatches is a process-lifetime static ConcurrentDictionary<(Type, Type), bool>. It is bounded by distinct type pairs, so it is fine in practice. It keeps Type references alive, which matters only if collectible load contexts are ever supported.
  • DataUnwrapper and DataSourceHelpers each carry a hand-written ContainsGenericParameters && MatchesOpenTuple || IsInstanceOfType condition. One helper such as TupleHelper.IsWholeRow(expectedType, item) would keep them consistent, and the mixed &&/|| precedence is easy to misread.
  • The generator receivesWholeTuple is a long inline expression with a side-effecting assignment (wholeTupleBindings = new ...) inside it. A named local function that returns the bindings would be easier to read and test.

Overall the behaviour looks carefully scoped, and AOT and trimming are covered (an AOT publish was run). I would like the duplication risk addressed or documented before merge, but I have no blocking correctness findings.

Review dispositions for f6129d5:

  • Fixed both current Codex parity findings, with replies on their inline threads. Closed interface/base candidate arguments are strict; matching-family spread columns preserve ordinary inference context.
  • Claude duplication concern: added the requested rule/implementation table to .claude/docs/project-structure.md, including the shared fixture and CI alignment gate. Documented why nullable stripping uses locals for direct bindings but original symbols for recursion. The suggested helper/enum refactors remain nonblocking maintainability work already covered by Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588; the cache disposition remains as recorded earlier.

Validation: generator snapshots 350 passed / one existing skip, with the new snapshot reviewed. All 58 successful regression cases pass in each of generated discovery, reflection discovery, and the Native AOT published executable. Each run also reports exactly the three intentional unsupported-inference failures (ordinary generic base, cross-family spread, matching-family spread), all before invocation. Native AOT publish succeeded. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; suite not run locally per AGENTS.md. Existing restore/analyzer/trim warnings remain tracked by #7412, #7410, #7430 and #7622.

Review of #7631 (tuple inference)

I read the diff but did not build or run anything. The approach is sound. Telling a whole first tuple argument apart from a nested multi-column row fixes #7629. The generator and runtime now use the same matching rules, and the tests cover both discovery modes and AOT. Candidate bindings are copied and only merged back on success, which is the right way to isolate rejected interface and base candidates.

Concerns, roughly in order of importance:

  1. The same rules are written three times.

    • They live in the generator's MatchesOpenRowType, the runtime's TryInferTypeMapping, and the tupleElement branch of ReflectionTestDataCollector.InferGenericTypeMapping.
    • The nullable-stripping and last-binding-wins loop is copied almost verbatim into each of them.
    • The alignment table in project-structure.md is useful, but it is a manual contract. Parity is only enforced by the Issue7629Tests matrix.
    • Please pull the tuple-element step (strip nullable, bind or recurse) into one helper per side. The generator can't share runtime code, so the runtime side should at least have a single helper used by both TestGenericTypeResolver and ReflectionTestDataCollector.
    • Also consider turning the boolean flags into one options struct or enum, e.g. InferenceMode.{Strict, TupleReconstruction}. reconstructTupleElements, overwriteBindings and tupleElement are overlapping flags, and they have an implicit invariant: in the runtime resolver, overwriteBindings is always passed equal to tupleElement. That is hard to follow.
  2. Operator precedence in conditions.

    • Both DataSourceHelpers and DataUnwrapper now mix && and || without parentheses (e.g. ContainsGenericParameters && MatchesOpenTuple(...) || IsInstanceOfType(...)).
    • It evaluates correctly, but it is easy to break on the next edit. Please add parentheses, or extract a IsWholeTupleArgument(expectedType, item) helper. The two call sites would then share it, since both already duplicate this check.
  3. receivesWholeTuple is hard to read.

    • This is the large inline boolean in InferTypesFromMethodDataSourceRowType. It also assigns wholeTupleBindings as a side effect inside the expression.
    • Move it into a named local function that returns the bindings, e.g. TryMatchWholeTuple(..., out bindings). Side effects inside a condition chain are fragile.
  4. The TupleHelper.OpenTupleMatches cache keeps Type references for the life of the process.

    • That is fine for normal use. With collectible assembly load contexts it pins types.
    • The matcher is cheap, and results are only needed at discovery or binding time. Consider dropping the cache, or using ConditionalWeakTable. If you keep the cache, please add a measurement showing it pays for itself, per the repo's perf guidance.
  5. Smaller points.

    • MatchesType allocates a new Dictionary per cache miss, which is acceptable.
    • Closed tuple elements are silently skipped during inference when tupleElement is set. A mismatch then surfaces later as an invocation-time conversion error rather than an inference error. The test matrix covers this, but the failure mode is worth a sentence in the docs.

None of these are blockers. Item 1 (the duplication) is the one I'd address, or at least track in an issue, so the three copies don't drift apart.

Review dispositions for 1f89b13:

  • Greptile valid-interface-conversion finding: fixed. Candidate inference now binds open arguments, substitutes the completed parameter type, and validates the constructed conversion. Closed arguments no longer have to be individually identical. Value/reference tuple regressions cover covariance and contravariance in both discovery modes.
  • Codex invariant-base-candidate finding: fixed. Reflection validates the completed constructed candidate before committing bindings, matching the generator. The reported IBox<Derived> candidate is rejected and the compatible IBox<Base<long, object>> candidate supplies T = long. Value/reference regressions failed before the fix and now pass. Reflection tuple interface candidates reuse the generic candidate matcher.
  • Claude item 1: the runtime candidate path now shares its validation instead of walking interface arguments separately. The broader tuple-element helper/options refactoring remains nonblocking follow-up Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588; the shared matrix and architecture alignment table remain the parity contract.
  • Claude items 2 and 3: accepted as nonblocking readability suggestions covered by the existing named-binding-traversal follow-up Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588. The current conditions evaluate as intended; this correctness change preserves their behavior.
  • Claude item 4: the cache is unchanged. No cache performance change or collectible-context support claim is made here; retaining the earlier nonblocking disposition avoids changing discovery caching without measurements.
  • Claude item 5: documented that closed reconstructed elements can fail conversion at invocation even when inference succeeds; per-candidate dictionary allocation remains unchanged.

Validation: generator snapshots 350 passed / one existing skip, with all new generated calls and metadata reviewed. The shared matrix has 64 passing cases in each discovery mode and Native AOT, plus exactly the three intentional unsupported-inference failures before invocation. Native AOT publish and the netstandard2.0 Engine build succeeded. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; suite not run locally per AGENTS.md. The known macOS MSB4166 worker-exit issue (#7468) affected one parallel build; an explicit dotnet build ... -m:1 succeeded, followed by the filtered --no-build runs. Existing restore/analyzer/trim warnings remain tracked by #7412, #7410, #7430 and #7622.

Fixed in 313e9a4. Reflection explicit-method-type inference now preserves a whole reference-tuple row for a sole bare type parameter, matching the generator and deduplicating against the explicit tuple instantiation. Before the fix the new regression ran one passing test in generated mode but two tests (one failing WholeRow) in reflection. Both modes now run only the whole-tuple instantiation. Added the CI integration count and reviewed/committed its generator snapshot. The cross-family conversion assertion now also checks the numeric value is 1.

Validation: complete shared #7629 matrix has 106 passes with exactly the same six intentional failures in generated discovery, reflection discovery and Native AOT. Generator snapshots: 351 passed, one existing skip. Native AOT publish, net10.0 build and git diff --check passed. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; the suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. Existing restore/analyzer/trim warnings retain their tracking issues (#7622, #7410, #7412, #7430).

Run 41991984116 succeeded, so its earlier blocker is gone. Latest Claude nonblocking suggestions retain their existing dispositions: matcher/helper/parity-test and cache-lifetime work remain under #7588; suppressions stay local to fixtures under #7622. Broad docstring churn and history rewriting to separate old snapshots do not improve this correctness fix. Fresh automatic reviews and CI are required for the pushed head; auto-merge remains unarmed.

Review of #7631 (tuple inference for generic data sources)

I did not build the PR or run its tests. I looked at the change set and the review history, and I found no new blocking defect.

Prior feedback. The earlier findings now have dispositions: the DataUnwrapper null case (unreachable, because IsTuple(null) is false), nullable repeated bindings, interface/base candidate isolation, nested singletons, runtime-cast fallback and explicit method types. Nothing I could see is left open.

What looks good

  • The whole-first-tuple vs nested-spread-row distinction is applied the same way in the generator, TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple and TestGenericTypeResolver. This is the AGENTS.md requirement for metadata collection.
  • The alignment table in .claude/docs/project-structure.md records the contract, so future changes have something to check against.
  • The regression matrix covers generated, reflection and AOT modes, and the author states which failures are intentional.

Maintainability (non-blocking)

  • The matching rules now live in three places: MatchesOpenRowType in the generator, TupleHelper, and the resolver. Parity is held up by tests and the table. A single declarative rule description exercised by one shared test corpus would catch drift sooner than patching each copy as reviewers spot gaps. Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588 already tracks this, so I'd keep it there.
  • The reflection matcher is hot-path discovery code. A before/after discovery benchmark on a large generic data-source suite would confirm the added recursion and caching don't cost anything noticeable.

Good to merge once CI is green.

Infer generic types from direct tuple rows.

MethodDataSource accepts direct tuple rows, and generated discovery can infer T = int from (T, string). The reflection guard rejects the row before tuple matching because its item is not a Func row. With [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(long))], reflection retains the explicit long instantiation but misses the inferred int instantiation. Accept a direct tuple row as well as a Func-wrapped tuple.

Run 41991984116 succeeded; the earlier blocker no longer holds. The previous head had green CI and positive current-head Claude/Codex verdicts, but CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding in review 5782441359 identified another concrete parity defect.

Fixed in c18b6c0: reflection explicit-method-type inference now accepts direct tuple rows as well as Func-wrapped rows. Direct value, reference and cross-family tuple regressions ran six passing tests in generated discovery before the fix but only three in reflection, which omitted the inferred int methods. Both modes now discover all six. The generator already handles these rows, so its implementation needs no change; reviewed and committed the six new generated instantiations in the verified snapshot.

Validation: full shared #7629 matrix runs 112 passes and the same six intentional failures in generated discovery, reflection discovery and the Native AOT executable. Generator snapshots: 351 passed, one existing skip. Native AOT publish, net10.0 build and git diff --check passed. Engine integration expectations assert six direct-row tests; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. The default snapshot build hit the existing macOS MSB4166 issue; single-worker build and direct invocation succeeded, with evidence added to #7468. Existing analyzer/restore/trim warnings retain their tracking issues (#7622, #7410, #7412, #7430).

Reviewed all review and conversation surfaces, including resolved-thread replies. Earlier findings remain dispositioned. Claude's nonblocking shared matcher/parity corpus and discovery-benchmark suggestions are recorded on #7588. CodeRabbit's generic docstring coverage suggestion does not establish a correctness defect or a required repository check; broad docstring churn remains outside this fix.

The pushed head needs fresh automatic reviews and CI before merge; auto-merge remains unarmed. This PR is already ready, so Codex will review automatically without a manual tag.

Review of #7631 (tuple method-type inference)

I read the generator change (MatchesOpenRowType, receivesWholeTuple), the DataSourceHelpers/TestDataRowUnwrapper changes, and the alignment table in project-structure.md, plus the long review history. I did not build the PR or run its tests, and I did not read the reflection resolver or snapshots line by line. I found no new blocking defect.

What looks good

  • The whole-row vs nested-row distinction is now explicit. The generator and runtime paths follow one rule set, and the docs table records it.
  • Candidate bindings for interface/base matches are isolated in copies and only merged on success. This avoids order-dependent leakage between candidates.
  • The shared regression fixtures run in reflection and AOT modes, and the earlier review findings each have a recorded disposition.

Maintainability concern (non-blocking, already tracked in #7588)
MatchesOpenRowType takes two interacting booleans (reconstructTupleElements, overwriteBindings). Their combinations act as four implicit modes, and the code comments say "overwriteBindings marks structural element inference, not candidate validation". That is hard to maintain, and the generator and TryInferTypeMapping must be kept in step by hand. I'd replace the booleans with a small enum MatchMode { WholeRow, StructuralElement, CandidateValidation }. Pulling the receivesWholeTuple predicate into a named helper would also help, since it currently inlines a long boolean with side-effecting assignment (wholeTupleBindings = new ... inside the condition). Assigning in a condition is easy to break when someone reorders the && chain.

Minor

  • The long receivesWholeTuple expression relies on short-circuit evaluation to initialise wholeTupleBindings. It is safe today, because the later wholeTupleBindings is { Count: > 0 } check tolerates null, but it is fragile.

Overall this is well scoped and well tested. I'm fine with the follow-up refactor landing under #7588.

Major · Resolve the source overload before inferring its row… · ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:2945-2950

src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:2945-2950
Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Resolve the source overload before inferring its row type.

InferTypesFromMethodDataSource still uses Type.EmptyTypes, so it reads Rows() even when Arguments selects Rows(int) at execution. For direct tuple rows, this can add an incorrect Test<int> instantiation when the executed row requires Test<long>. Generated discovery already resolves the overload by Arguments and infers only long.

Use the same Arguments-aware overload resolution as MethodDataSourceAttribute.ResolveDataSourceMethod before reading the method return type. The lookup predates this PR, but direct tuple inference makes the mismatch reachable.

Fixed in 2a1cc37. Reflection explicit-method-type inference now unwraps one outer Func, one TestDataRow and its supported inner Func before checking the tuple payload. Ordinary spread-column inference now recurses through matching-rank arrays and nullable value parameters, retaining the generator's later-column overwrite policy. Added direct/inner/outer wrapped optional-tail regressions and array/nullable spread regressions; generator behavior already matches these rules, so its implementation needs no change. Reviewed and committed the eight added generated instantiations and metadata in the verified snapshot.

Validation: net10.0 build passed; generator snapshot suite has 351 passes and one existing skip. Full shared #7629 matrix has 117 passes and the same nine intentional failures in generated discovery, reflection discovery and the Native AOT executable; three newly asserted failures are explicit long instantiations of wrapped int tuple rows with optional tails, alongside the six existing unsupported cases. Native AOT publish and git diff --check passed. Engine integration expectations were updated for CI; that suite was not run locally per AGENTS.md. Added the nullable spread-column TUnit0001 false positive to #7622 and suppressed it narrowly; existing restore/analyzer/trim warnings retain their tracking issues (#7410, #7412, #7430).

Run 41991984116 succeeded, so the earlier blocker is cleared. Reviewed reviews, conversation comments and inline threads, including later replies on resolved threads. The two current blocking findings are fixed here; earlier dispositions stand. Claude's nonblocking matcher refactor remains tracked under #7588, and CodeRabbit's broad docstring suggestion does not identify a required repository check or a correctness defect. Fresh automatic review and CI are required on this new head; auto-merge remains unarmed. This ready PR receives automatic Codex review without a manual tag.

Review of #7631 (tuple inference alignment)

I read the generator (MatchesOpenRowType), TupleHelper.MatchesOpenTuple, and the reflection changes in ReflectionTestDataCollector. I did not read TestGenericTypeResolver or DataUnwrapper in full. I did not run any tests. The skill-based review failed, so this is a manual pass.

What looks good

  • The whole-tuple vs spread-row rule is applied the same way in both discovery modes.
  • The rule/implementation table in project-structure.md states the alignment contract.
  • Coverage is broad: a shared regression matrix in both modes and AOT, plus a generator snapshot.

Concerns

  1. Two parallel matchers can drift. The generator's MatchesOpenRowType (symbol based), TupleHelper.MatchesType and TestGenericTypeResolver.TryInferTypeMapping (reflection) have to behave identically. The only thing keeping them aligned is a comment saying so. MatchesOpenRowType takes three boolean-like modes (reconstructTupleElements, overwriteBindings, and validateCandidate, which is derived from the first two). That is hard to reason about. I'd suggest an explicit enum such as WholeRow, ReconstructedElement or CandidateValidation. A shared table-driven test that feeds the same type pairs to both matchers would also catch drift. The PR already points to Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588 for this, so I'd prioritise it.
  2. Unbounded static cache. TupleHelper.OpenTupleMatches is a process-lifetime ConcurrentDictionary keyed on (Type, Type). That is fine for a normal test run. It does keep types alive for the lifetime of the process, which matters if collectible assemblies are involved. Since this is a hot path, I'd confirm that is acceptable.
  3. Permissive fallback. return reconstructTupleElements && overwriteBindings makes unmatched open elements succeed, so a mismatch is deferred to a runtime cast. The docs state this is intentional. Surfacing the failure at discovery would be friendlier. At minimum, check that the runtime error message names the test and the element.
  4. Size. The PR adds about 13.7k lines, mostly the verified snapshot (about 12k) and the test project. The logic review is manageable, but the snapshot is hard to review. A narrower snapshot input would make future diffs easier to read.
  5. Per-candidate allocations. MatchesOpenRowType allocates a new dictionary per interface and base candidate and calls Cast/Select. This is generator-time only, so it is acceptable. Reflection-side TryInferTypeMapping runs at discovery on a hot path, so it is worth benchmarking with many generic tuple tests.

Verdict: The logic looks coherent and well tested, with no blocking correctness bug found in the parts I read. My main request is to reduce the risk of drift between the matchers (point 1), by using an enum for the modes and by adding a parity test.

Run 41991984116 completed successfully; that earlier blocker no longer holds. This PR has now reached 20 automated review rounds, and the current head still has two blocking parity findings. The issue-pr-loop rework budget requires splitting instead of pushing another repair to this PR.

Replacement deliverables are native siblings under #7351:

The overlapping files are TestMetadataGenerator.cs, ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, DataUnwrapper.cs and TestDataRowUnwrapper.cs; their selected inference/reconstruction paths are owned separately in the replacement issues. There is no repeated-conflict pattern (one force-push); the review-round limit is the reason for this split. Focused fixtures and regenerated snapshots must accompany each extraction rather than copying the combined snapshot.

Closing this PR without merging and keeping branch issue-7629-tuple-parity at 2a1cc3753c847cfc3393accc5b8adae517e75895 as the reusable source. #7629 is superseded by the two sibling issues. No fixes were pushed in this unit; pending CI cannot establish merge eligibility while these findings remain. Earlier review dispositions remain recorded in this PR; nonblocking matcher maintenance stays under #7588. No human decision or external dependency is needed: later units can implement the two focused issues independently from fresh main.
