Summary

  • expose exact, bounded, privacy-safe invalid receipt evidence through the public SDK, pm merge report, health, and validation
  • classify each rejected candidate by source and stable reason while preserving complete counts and truncation receipts
  • detect append-only history references whose pending or reconciled evidence is missing, with item/line coordinates and non-destructive recovery guidance
  • make missing-store classification portable across Windows and POSIX by inspecting the nearest existing ancestor instead of trusting ENOENT versus ENOTDIR spellings
  • govern the new diagnostic in generated SDK, error-catalog, agent-capability, refusal-census, and full contract snapshots

Project context

Closes #1173.
Closes #1174.

Verification

  • 594 test files and 8,244 tests passed
  • exact coverage: 60,700/60,700 statements, 45,900/45,900 branches, 12,629/12,629 functions, 58,439/58,439 lines
  • full pnpm quality:static passed, including zero duplication, 100% source/export/member docstrings, contract snapshots, SDK/package boundaries, refusal closure, token budgets, tracker graph quality, and record integrity
  • temporary Git repository acceptance proved two distinct invalid candidates, privacy-safe record locators, one missing history reference, and executable non-destructive remediation
  • focused linked PM suites passed 39/39 and 10/10

Summary by cubic

Makes merge-receipt evidence diagnostics actionable and portable: health, merge report, and validation now expose bounded, privacy-safe details for each rejected receipt instead of only an opaque count.

  • Exports the new invalid-evidence contract from the public merge SDK.
  • Each rejected candidate reports a stable reason, its source (clone_local, durable, or copy-consistency), a safe receipt_id, or a candidate_name_hash for unsafe names; the detail list caps at 100 rows while invalid_evidence_count stays exact.
  • A single documented predicate decides whether a receipt id is safe to expose, shared by merge-evidence and missing-history diagnostics.
  • Detects append-only history references whose evidence is missing, with item/line coordinates and non-destructive recovery guidance.
  • Fixes Windows vs POSIX classification by inspecting the requested store coordinate and nearest existing ancestor instead of relying on ENOENT vs ENOTDIR.
  • The merge_receipt_evidence_invalid remediation now recommends pm merge report --include-reconciled --json instead of the full health check.
  • Adds the merge_receipt_history_reference_missing error code and regenerates SDK, error-catalog, refusal-census, and contract snapshots.
  • Closes merge_receipt_evidence_invalid is gate-failing, names no records, and differs between a clone and a pristine worktree of the same commit #1173 and Nightly Validation failed: windows-latest / Node 24 #1174.

Written for commit 1dd7305. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Summary by Sourcery

Make merge receipt diagnostics actionable, privacy-safe, bounded, and portable across SDK and CLI surfaces.

New Features:

  • Expose bounded, privacy-safe diagnostics for rejected merge receipt evidence through the SDK, merge reports, health checks, and validation.
  • Detect missing merge receipt references in append-only history and provide record-level coordinates and recovery guidance.

Bug Fixes:

  • Classify missing or inaccessible receipt stores portably across Windows and POSIX by inspecting existing ancestors rather than relying on platform-specific error codes.

Enhancements:

  • Add stable evidence-source and rejection-reason classifications while preserving exact invalid-evidence counts and truncation status.
  • Protect diagnostic output by exposing safe receipt IDs or hashed candidate names without returning malformed contents.

Documentation:

  • Document the new merge receipt evidence and history-reference diagnostics, privacy guarantees, bounded detail, and non-destructive recovery behavior.

Tests:

  • Add integration and unit coverage for invalid evidence classification, privacy-safe truncation, missing history references, copy mismatches, unreadable candidates, and cross-platform traversal behavior.

Chores:

  • Regenerate SDK, error-catalog, refusal-census, capability, and contract snapshots for the new diagnostic contract.

Expose bounded invalid-evidence identities, source provenance, and stable reason codes through the public SDK, merge report, health, and validation surfaces. Detect missing history-referenced receipts without exposing unsafe identifiers or recommending destructive history rewrites. Classify Windows and POSIX traversal failures by the nearest existing ancestor, and prove the contract with real filesystem, integration, token-boundary, and full repository coverage gates.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57e8d

The PR expands merge-receipt diagnostics with bounded, privacy-safe evidence and portable filesystem handling. It is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up for a duplicated identifier-safety rule, a root-user test guard, and restoration of the recorded PM dependency edge to prevent test fragility or metadata drift.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#1173 Make invalid merge-receipt evidence actionable by exposing bounded, privacy-safe receipt identifiers or locators, the evidence source, and a stable reason for each validation failure through the SDK, merge report, health diagnostics, and validation output. ✅
#1173 Prevent or clearly qualify gate-failing merge-receipt verdicts that are caused by clone-local or other untracked state, so health does not misleadingly report an environment-dependent repository failure. ❌ The PR adds source classification and diagnostics for clone-local evidence, but health still derives the gate-failing invalid-evidence count from that local evidence. It does not remove the gate, downgrade or qualify the verdict, or otherwise prevent a pristine worktree and a long-lived clone from producing different gate results.
#1173 Make remediation non-destructive and detect missing merge receipts referenced by append-only history, reporting their item and line coordinates and directing recovery without deleting evidence or rewriting history. ✅
#1174 Fix the Windows-specific failure in nightly validation for Node 24, particularly around merge-receipt store traversal and missing-store classification. ✅
#1174 Ensure receipt evidence diagnostics behave consistently across Windows and POSIX platforms without relying on platform-specific ENOENT versus ENOTDIR error spellings. ✅
#1174 Add regression coverage and diagnostic output sufficient to safely validate the fix before trusting subsequent daily releases. ✅

Sourcery guide feedback: the single negative assessment misreads request 2 in GH-1173. That request explicitly permits a clone-local gate when the finding identifies the source and remediation enumerates the evidence. This PR does both through evidence_source and pm merge report --include-reconciled --json; unrelated runtime/search caches do not feed receipt inspection. The diagrams and remaining assessment are otherwise useful.

Cubic review summary was actionable: both P2 findings are valid and fixed in the working tree, with public barrel regeneration and an exact-path filesystem negative control. The closeout commit will carry both fixes.

Export the invalid-evidence contract from the public merge SDK and inspect the requested receipt-store coordinate before walking to an existing ancestor, preserving portable fail-closed behavior on Windows and POSIX.

Close and release the linked PM defects with structured recurrence evidence, exact coverage and static-gate proof, manual CLI acceptance, and a pm-changelog 2026.9.1 generated changelog.

CodeRabbit exact-head review acknowledged and incorporated in commit 1dd7305:

  • restored pm-dn8rwl --recurs_from--> pm-z1z96w through append-only PM history;
  • centralized the receipt-id cleartext privacy predicate;
  • made the real chmod negative control uid-0-safe without weakening injected filesystem controls.

The out-of-scope warning is declined: pm-changelog 2026.9.1 activation and generated CHANGELOG are explicit delivery requirements and are linked to the PM item. The docstring warning is also declined: the repository-owned static gate proves 100% source/export/member docstring coverage; the bot marked 10/12 touched functions unsupported before calculating 25%. Full local coverage is 8,244/8,244 at exact 100/100/100/100 and quality:static passes.
