Advertised MCP create/update fields could return success without persisting values, and malformed values could disappear while sibling changes were written. Both actions now use canonical SDK mutation contracts, preserve nested alias precedence and custom project fields, and refuse lossy inputs before item or history writes. Array elements are checked before CSV conversion, and declared boolean fields are checked through action schemas and aliases before coercion. Create also retains imported completion metadata and explicit false values.

SDK object builders now preserve literal names/actions and contextual callback types while rejecting unknown top-level keys. Supported repeatable and value-validation flag metadata is available directly to package authors. Public declarations, generated contracts, docs, and the package-generated changelog are updated together. The runtime-field helper export documents lookup precedence and explicit false/null preservation.

The requested delivery scope also includes GitHub issue intake and independent security, dependency and release checkpoints. Those PM records retain evidence and canonical owners; the executable-help report stays queued and unclaimed.

Validation:

  • Full coverage: 10,982 tests passed, 3 skipped; 100% statements, branches, functions and lines, with zero uncovered counts.
  • Complete local static command, terminal defect evidence, linked PM tests, tracker history validation, and pm-changelog generation/check.
  • Joint registry and OSV advisory gate passes all 568 locked versions with zero findings. Final exact-head static, compatibility, coverage and security gates pass in hosted CI.
  • Packed public SDK on TypeScript 5.9.3 and Node/Bun, including a deliberately weakened declaration control that fails as expected and passes after restoration.
  • Maintained npm/npx/Bun/bunx packed smoke checks.
  • Exact-commit hosted analysis passes: DeepScan has zero new issues and CodeFactor has zero outstanding annotations.
  • Final-source CodSpeed comparison reports no regressions. Its different-runner warning remains visible; the reported speedup is not treated as a proven code improvement.

All three actionable review threads are resolved and their fixes confirmed inline. Additional full-review coverage remains unavailable under free quota and trial limits.

Tracking: pm-gh1538, pm-gh1539, pm-ap7ilf, pm-gllxud, and pm-7qg4jz. All tracker changes were made through the CLI. New intake remains open and unclaimed: executable help in pm-gh1540, and original release-feed receipt retention in pm-z20n3s.

Closes #1538
Closes #1539

Route MCP create and update through canonical SDK mutation option contracts
instead of the partial flat-field allowlist. Preserve explicit nested aliases,
repeatable inputs, custom workspace metadata and false booleanish values.
Reject malformed containers, discarded scalar values, invalid repeatable
entries and non-boolean force values before durable writes. Keep native SDK
mutation admission and advisory unknown-field compatibility intact.

Put create completion fields in the canonical option table and recognize valid
workspace fields through the public SDK field lookup. Verify advertised schemas
against persisted items, imported timestamps and immutable history; compare
item/history bytes after refused mutations.

Use const generic parameters and exact keys across object authoring builders.
Retain contextual callback types and zero-cost identity, expose supported flag
metadata, and validate public packed declarations with TypeScript 5.9.3 and
Node/Bun consumers plus a deliberately degraded declaration control.

Include generated SDK/contracts, documentation, package-owned changelog and
structured PM closure evidence for pm-gh1538, pm-gh1539 and pm-ap7ilf. Record the
new MCP executable-help report under its own open, unclaimed canonical item.

Validation: 10,982 tests passed with three skips; exact coverage is
100/100/100/100. Full static, terminal defect evidence, linked tests, packed
npm/npx/Bun/bunx smoke and generated changelog checks pass.

  • New Features
    • MCP create and update requests support workspace-defined fields, preserve nested-option precedence, and normalize supported values. Create requests also accept completion timestamps and close reasons.
    • SDK authoring helpers preserve literal types, reject unsupported properties, and support repeatable and value-validated flags.
    • Added an SDK helper for reading runtime field option values.
  • Bug Fixes
    • MCP mutations persist supplied metadata consistently, including explicit false values, and reject malformed inputs before task or history changes.
    • Mixed-type mutation arrays are rejected before normalization.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on MCP mutation options and SDK authoring patterns.

The pull request updates MCP create and update option handling, tightens SDK authoring-builder types, and adds related tests, documentation, public-surface declarations, and project records.

Changes: MCP mutation handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mutation contracts and normalization
src/sdk/cli-contracts/*, src/sdk/runtime-input.ts, tests/fixtures/contracts/full.json, tests/integration/sdk/mcp-mutation-contract.integration.spec.ts, tests/unit/sdk/tool-option-contracts.spec.ts, tests/unit/scripts/release/command-grammar-gate.spec.ts, docs/MCP_OPTION_CONFORMANCE.md, CHANGELOG.md, sdk/public-surface.json, .agents/pm/issues/pm-ap7ilf.toon, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gh1538.toon, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gllxud.toon, .agents/pm/issues/pm-7qg4jz.toon, .agents/pm/history/pm-ap7ilf.jsonl, .agents/pm/history/pm-gh1538.jsonl, .agents/pm/history/pm-gllxud.jsonl, .agents/pm/history/pm-7qg4jz.jsonl
Create and update use contract-based normalization, with nested options taking precedence. Invalid inputs are rejected before execution. Create options add closeReason and completedAt. Integration tests cover persisted values and refusals without task or history changes.
Runtime fields and MCP option recognition
src/mcp/server.ts, src/sdk/runtime-primitives.ts, tests/integration/sdk/mcp-mutation-contract.integration.spec.ts, docs/MCP_OPTION_CONFORMANCE.md
MCP option checks recognize registered workspace fields for create and update. The SDK exports a runtime-field value helper. Tests cover field persistence and atomic refusal.

SDK authoring builders

Layer / File(s) Summary
Builder contracts and public declarations
src/sdk/define.ts, sdk/public-surface.json, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gh1539.toon, .agents/pm/history/pm-gh1539.jsonl
Object-definition builders use const type parameters and exact-definition constraints. Flag authoring adds repeatable and value_validation. The public-surface snapshot records the updated signatures.
Builder type tests and SDK guidance
tests/types/authoring-builders.test-d.ts, docs/SDK.md
Type tests cover literal preservation, callback typing, and rejection of unknown properties. The SDK guide describes builder contracts and runtime-field helpers.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR aligns MCP create/update execution with canonical SDK mutation contracts to ensure advertised fields persist correctly and invalid inputs fail atomically, while strengthening SDK authoring builders with exact-key validation and literal/contextual typing; public contracts, documentation, generated artifacts, tests, and tracker records are updated accordingly.

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#1538 Ensure pm_update does not silently succeed without applying mutation fields supplied at the top level of arguments: honor those fields, or reject them with an actionable error. ✅
#1539 Reject unknown top-level keys in fresh object literals passed to defineCommand, including misspelled metadata such as descripton and read_ouput. ✅
#1539 Preserve narrow literal types for command properties such as name and action when using defineCommand. ✅

Codecov Report

✅ All modified and coverable lines are covered by tests.
✅ All tests successful. No failed tests found.

📢 Thoughts on this report? Let us know!

A mixed tags array could become a CSV string before mutation preflight checked
its types. A request containing tags=[valid,4] and a sibling title therefore
persisted both fields instead of refusing the malformed value.

Check merged create/update CSV-array inputs before conversion, preserving
explicit nested alias precedence and legacy read normalization. Keep valid
string and empty arrays, including a valid nested replacement for an invalid
flat value. Reject non-string entries before any item or history write.

Extend the public request-to-persistence regressions for flat and nested create
and update failures, byte-identical refusal snapshots, empty arrays and nested
replacement. Update conformance docs and include the structured closure and
package-generated changelog for pm-gllxud in the existing grouped delivery.

Validation: both new regressions fail before the guard and pass afterward.
All nine linked tests and the full 10,982-test suite pass; exact coverage is
100/100/100/100 with no uncovered counts. The public stdio control preserves the
original item after refusal. Local static retries refuse registry transport
failure; mandatory hosted static, security and coverage checks remain required
before merge.

Comment thread src/sdk/runtime-input.ts Resolved
Boolean readers could discard malformed values such as clearComments=42 while
a sibling title was persisted. Validate all canonical action boolean parameters
and registered aliases against the SDK schemas before normalization, including
force and top-level receipt controls. Keep legitimate true/false values,
polymorphic regression metadata and project fields with names used by other
actions, rather than applying unrelated global parameter types to custom data.

Extend the public create/update regressions with atomic malformed-flag refusals,
real true/false effects, aliases, receipt controls and a custom offline field.
Record structured closure evidence for pm-7qg4jz and regenerate the changelog
through the latest pm-changelog package. Retain release/performance observations
in their canonical records and queue release receipt diagnostics separately.

Validation: the pre-fix controls fail and the corrected public stdio probe
refuses without changing the item. All linked tests and packed npm/npx/Bun/bunx
smoke pass. The complete static command passes after registry feed recovery,
and joint registry/OSV evidence covers all 568 locked versions with no findings.
All 10,982 tests pass with three skips; exact coverage is 100/100/100/100 over
70,263 statements, 54,026 branches, 14,479 functions and 66,578 lines. Terminal
defect evidence and the package-generated changelog check pass.

Comment thread src/sdk/runtime-primitives.ts Resolved
Document lookup order across the configured option target, camelized field
key, CLI flag and aliases. State own-property and defined-value semantics,
including preservation of explicit false/null and the undefined fallback.
No runtime behavior or public signatures change.

Reuse pm-ap7ilf for the final review correction, retaining earlier closure
history and recording the new source/documentation link and sandboxed test
run. Build, 33 focused integration/contract tests, docstring/export checks,
the public-surface snapshot and documentation links pass. Regenerate the
changelog through the latest pm-changelog package.

Retain the repeated CodSpeed report and the independently dispatched,
immutable-main control under pm-bj7rq0. Release that broader investigation
open without changing benchmark fixtures, performance budgets or provider
acknowledgements; final-head hosted admission remains required.
